It's a very common problem, Lenovo replaces them under warranty, but otherwise you'd need to buy and replace the hinges. They aren't expensive (about $15usd), but they aren't fun to install. When you install, be very careful when dissembling the Lid assembly, the bezel is glued on with double sided tape and also has clips, it's very easy to break the clips, and the screen is extremely easy to crack too. The right hinge is much easier then the left. Many people find that replacing only one does the job of making it feel tight again.

  • Is my screen broken or hinges?

    Hello,
This is my early 2011 unibody macbook pro. It has had a loose screen (falls down when I open it more than about 90 degrees) and also wobbled up and down from the left side. Today it somewhat broke. Can someone please let me know what the problem is. By that I mean does it require a new screen or new hinges etc. Thanks.

Thanks for helping. Its a 13 inch. I think it broke like 2 years ago when i threw it open on the bed. But it came off today. Before this it was all loose. Can you please check the link I posted to see if that is the right thing I require. Thank you. Screen is not damaged.

My laptop screen wobbles a bit and I was wondering if it would get repaired if I take it to an apple store.

You should take the computer to the Apple store to have it fixed.
If the computer is in warranty, they fix it free.

  • How to replace G4 ibook screen assembly and hinges

My son dropped his iBook when it was open. The fall torqued the hinges so that the wires are showing, there's a quarter inch gap at the back, and the screen assembly has come away from the bottom of the screen. However, the LCD screen itself seems to be fine. I recently purchased on ebay a complete screen assembly with hinges that contains a dead LCD screen, and was wondering whether putting the undamaged screen in this used assembly and reconnecting it to the ibook is something I can do at home. If not, any idea what a repair shop would charge? Thanks!

There may be an appropriate DIY guide to removing and replacing displays
and other parts in the iBook online; keeping in mind if there is an AppleCare
plan in effect, unauthorized repairs on non-covered repairs will likely void
the remainder of the warranty on the rest of the computer.
That said, places like this online have some guides which may help a user
look into a computer no longer under any warranty. http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/
Companies who specialize in repairing Apple portables
and whose staff technicians are factory trained, can
restore function to an Apple computer and often w/o
interfering with any residual warranty on the rest of it.
There are several, but I have experience with wegenermedia
dot com in South Carolina, since they fixed an iBook of mine.
Others are out there, and can be contacted directly by email.
Wegenermedia has their own parts inventory; they would
be able to help you get the computer together again.

Could anyone suggest where I might be able to find a replacement housing for the screen and new hinges?
I foolishly tried taking it apart before and the whole thing just split and will not go back together.

Try ebay or www.DiscountedLaptopparts.com. I've had very good luck with replacement parts for my machine. HP ENVY DV7-7230us notebook PC

  • T61 screen flickered for a while, now no backlight

    Hi all,
My T61 widescreen started flickering a couple of weeks back, then a few minutes after startup, the backlight went out. I went to restart, but it still came up dark. A light tap on the side of the cover though brought the backlight back up, but it went out again in few minutes, Also hinging the cover up and down caused the light to flicker on briefly, but not permanently. Tapping and hinging no longer have any effect. I can easily see the desltop with a flashlight and it all looks just as it should.
There hasn't been any "pink screen," which I read here is the symptom for a bad backlight.
Thinking it might be mechanical, a loose connection, (which is what the manul says to check first,) I removed the front monitor bezel and back cover, checked the main connection in the computer, but hesitated to dig into the monitor side further, because of all those "do not touch" stickers.
Any speculation about what's happening? Do bad inverters cause flickering?
I'm considering a new outboard monitor, something larger, because I use the machine for graphics and 1440 x 900 is really kinda small.
Is it any kind of big hassle to connect my T61 to a second monitor? Any constraints on size or other specs ?
    Solved!

Thanks, TuuS, sorry if my message was ambiguous,
The higher prices I was referring to are the ones I've seen for external monitors at the 16:10 resolution, not for replacement screens for my T61. Those external monitors, 1920x1200, not refurbished, do seem to start at higher prices than other resolutions.
That said, I know so little about it that I don't know whether I need to stick with that ratio if I attach an external monitor.
I couldn't agree more about liking the T61, and mine's been great, purchased used for $200, a couple of years ago, and used daily without a hitch since.
The only difficulty I have with the T61 is processing power, which is higher than I expected when I got the machine, but for what I want to do, a hyper-threading quad core, i7 somthing-or-other, is really called for.
Of course, I'd rather not be computer-less for the time it's going to take to afford that i7, and $80 makes sense in the interim. Can you suggest a source for a refurbished screen in the price range you mention?

  • Just purchased T61 on eBay - has hinge issue

I just bought a T61 on eBay. It is nice in every way except that it has the loose hinge problem. There is about 1" of play, or looseness, at the top of the screen. There is no mfr warranty on the unit, but the seller gives a 30 day warranty. I like the unit, but I don't want it to be a money pit. I bought this unit because I heard that they were built like a bank vault, and I figured that if any used notebook was worth buying, it would be this one. Now, I'm having second thoughts.
I'm wondering how long before the hinge problem makes the thing unusable? It's not really a problem now but would be if it gets worse.
I ordered memory for the unit and was planning to upgrade to Win 7 64bit, but, after reading here about the hinge problem,
I'm not sure if that is wise.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Depending on one's priorities and budget, they could go one generation back to T60/p, or ahead to T400/500 and W500 which are all far more depndable machines than nVidia-based T61/p units.
There's a zillion of threads on this forum, Bill Morrow's thinkpad forum and all over the Internet on nVidia chips failure...do some research before making your next move.
The issue at hand is fixable only by motherboard swap, regardless of what anyone will tell you...there is *no* fix for the original batch of GPU chips.
    Good luck.
    Cheers,
    George

  • Yoga 2 Pro display/screen wobble in laptop or stand mode

Been looking around but can't find anyone mentioning the screen/display wobble when using the yoga 2 pro in laptop or stand mode.  That baffles me.  I tried normal touching on the screen on the Yoga 2 Pro at Best Buy in laptop and stand modes and the display bounces back and forth horribly.  I can't believe this wouldn't be a deal breaker for many people unless most people just aren't using the touch screen (in those modes) that much.  And if they aren't, what's the point of having the touch screen (other than tablet mode).  Windows 8 is meant to be used with a touch screen in ANY mode.
So, can anyone comment on their experiences with a wobbling/bouncing screen/display?

Hmmm.  Wonder if you've actually used the Yoga 2 Pro.  Or maybe you're trying a little too hard to defend your expensive purchase.  Either way, calm down, buddy.  This system seems nice, just not for me with that wobble when *BARELY* touching the screen.  The Surface Pro 2 solves the issue with a backstand.  The Samsung Ativ series doesn't seem to have this issue.  And, yes, both of those are comparable systems.
I actually searched a little longer and DID find others complaining about it on the Yoga 2 Pro.  It may not be a dealbreaker for you, but it is for some.  Its irrelevant if it "comes with the territory...for this form factor" if it distracts *enough* from its usefulness (and thats putting it nicely).

  • T61 Screen is blurry

Hi, I have T61. The screen is blurry. First I saw the error "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered."  in VISTA. I have completely removed vista and install the XP still my screen is blurry. Some times while booting I am not able to see anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How can i find nvidia GPU? thanks
If you post your machine type/model (i.e.: 7661-xxx, info is on the bottom of your machine) you can determine if in fact you have a model with nVidia or Intel graphics. When you say you can hardly see the screen when booting: I have this to as I have specified dynamic brightness control in Power Manager. If you turn bright. control off next time you boot the screen will come display at the last brightness level you specified whil in Windows I think.....
Back to the original problem: fuzzyness. It sounds like once XP was installed the hardware specific display driver (either nVidia or Intel) was not installed and you may be in XP's VGA mode.

  • Screen wobbles and unsatisfactory rendering after last update

After the last automatic update (which upgraded QT to 7.2 and a couple of other things), the screen rendering has deteriorated markedly.
Moving the mouse around causes the screen to wobble by a pixel or two vertically and horizontally and the rendering of fonts (in Firefox particularly, but also system profiler and other apps) to look bad. The wobble is independent of any application and affects the dock as well as the whole screen.
Is there anything that can be done to fix this?

You have accidentally turned on screen zoom. Turn it off (System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing > Zoom > Off).

  • T61 Screen issues

I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue.
I have a T61 8891-CTO. Two days ago when I woke the computer from sleep mode, the screen never came on. I restarted thinking it was having a problem and the screen lights up for a minute but displays nothing before going black.
I have it plugged into an external monitor using the VGA port and it works fine. I've tried to display on both monitors and it will not display on the laptop display at all. When I look at the display settings, it lists the laptop display as secondary and (default monitor) on NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M.
We also tried to shine a flashlight on the screen to see if it is just really dim, but there is nothing being displayed on the laptop display. I bought this computer direct from Lenovo in Nov 2007.

    SBB 14.1 SXGA+ TFT
I would appreciate any help you can give me. The diagnostic place would have to keep my computer for 3 days to be able to tell me what's wrong. I don't mind spending the money, but I don't really want to be without my computer for that long.
    Thanks.

I am curious how they tested the motherboard. You haave a 4:3 machine (not-wide-screen) with nVIDIA graphics. To me, the grapgics unit seems likely. The shop would need to disassemble and plug a different LCD assembly onto the board. At least, that is what I would do.

  • T61 screen goes black

Hello, when I turn on my T61 the thinkpad logo comes on, then the screen goes black. Then after I eithe rput it to sleep, or close the lid and open it, the screen comes on for like 3 seconds, then goes out again. Anyone know what the problem is?

What is the 7 digit model number of your T61 and does it have nVidia or Intel graphics.
Also what is the date code that follows the serial number, it's usually a 4 digit representing YY/MM

  • T61 screen is dead

I have a 8892  14" T61 with 1400 resolution. It worked perfectly till yesterday. The screen is filled with vertical lines but nothing else. When I attach an external display to the VGA the external display works fine. Any idea what can be the problem? Thank you very much!

    Hi cnhwanggz,
The Hardware Maintenance Manual (avail from Support downloads) has troubleshooting flowcharts. Because your external video still works fine, your GPU is probably fine. The problem is almost certainly either the cable that connects your T61's system board to its LCD, or the LCD itself.
First thing to try is to unplug then re-plug the LCD cable where it connects to the system board. The HMM shows you how, and you can watch videos at:
    http://www.lenovoservicetraining.com/ion/
If that doesn't work, you can try unplugging then re-plugging the LCD cable where it connects to the LCD. Getting to it is not nearly so easy, though. You can do it yourself if you're handy and patient, but might prefer not to risk damaging the screen bezel, etc. on your way in.
If re-plugging both ends of the LCD cable doesn't fix the problem, you're looking at replacing the cable (~$35) and/or the LCD itself (~$130). (Prices are only approximate, and are for parts only.) Start with the cable because it's cheaper. The HMM has part numbers, you must get an exact match for both the cable and screen, because there are multiple incompatible versions of each.
If you'd rather not tackle the troubleshooting and repair yourself, I'd recommend contacting an authorized Lenovo service provider. You can find one in your area starting from:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-44986&sitestyle=Lenovo
    Good luck,

  • T61 screen off then on again

I suspect this is an easy fix, but I can't figure it out...
On my T61, the screen will turn off (I'm guessing for screensaver, which is set to "None" in Display Properties) and then turn right back on again. I looked for a conflict between Power Options (Windows Control Panel) and ThinkVantage Power Manager, but Power Manager seems all greyed out and with no active Power Scheme. Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

Is it possible from the attached picture determine if this flickering is caused by the LCD or graphics card?

    Flickering or a split image?
If you're getting double "ThinkPad" logos on the boot screen, it's most likely the GPU.
