T61 sudden shut down after I replaced the fan

I was getting a fan error (that was preventing the unit from booting), so I ordered a replacement.
On installing it last night, everything seemed fine. Unit ran fine for 20m then Bam! sudden shutdown.
This morning, same thing, both witht the battery installed and with it out.
I have to suspect the fan, but I presume the unit wouldn't even boot if the fan was not working.
any suggestions for diagnosing the issue?
many thanks
Peter

Difficult to say...
Theory says system shutdowns automatically to avoid permanent damage, but if you tried to run it several times...
Anyway a new CPU won't cost you much. Try again once the thermal paste is reapllied.
I hope you're using the HMM and following the steps described there. Don't forget to tell us the machine type number (see my post above)
Good luck!

  • G4 HiRes Powerbook shuts down after having closed the lid

I own a less then 6 months old 15" 1.67 GHz HiRes Alu Powerbook. Every now and, after having closed the lid, I have observed that when I reopen the pb it has shut down. The battery is still fully charged, so it can't be the case that the pb has not gone to sleep and it has thus discharged the battery. I also think it has happend with both the power adapter connected and disconnected.
In the past I deleted power managment pref files (can't remember the details) as advised by Apple in their tech papers, which resolved sleeping problems (not mine though :-))
    All tips appreciated.
    Thanks, Robert

Occasionally with mine, it only appears to have shut down.
I close the lid, and there is no pulsing light. the light is off as though its shutdown.
then if I open the lid, hit a key or two, wait, then close it again, and wait, the pulsing light will appear and if I then open it, it will wake from sleep.
Weird, but you might give it a go. This seems to happen often when running video-related applications, but I have no real data here and do not know what causes it. After I discovered this problem, I use it now to prevent having to lose my work and restart.

  • WinDVD 10 SD suddenly shuts down after inserting a dvd!

    Hi there,
During the last days I configured the w530 of my gilrfriend (OS is Windows 7).
After installing the newest updates (Both, from Lenovo and Microsoft) everything seems to be fine, except that WinDVD doesn't work anymore! When I insert a DVD the program shuts down. I tried to disable the Firewall (comodo) and to deactivate Spybot, with no results. Also a clean re-installation with the setup.exe contained in SWTOOLS didn't work.
Is this a known issue? Has anyone an idea how to fix it?

  • IPhone 5s shuts down after being in the cold for a while

I have an iPhone 5s.  I go outside jogging at noon and listen to the radio on the phone app.  Since it is cold outside, it has happened several times that after about 20 minutes I come back into the building and take out and check my phone it shuts down by itself.  If I try to restart, it will tell me the battery is low and need recharge.  I will have to wait for a couple of minutes before I could restart.  First couple of times, the battery was low, close to 10%.  Today it happened again.  When I restarted eventually, it showed over 60% battery life left.  Has anyone else had similar issues?  The warrenty just expired.  What is my option?

  • Shut Down after CPU replacing

Hello, sorry for my bad english, I have a Lenovo b590 laptop essentials that work very well but I did upgrade to Intel Core I5 3210m. Initially with Pentium 2020m. The upgrade was done professionally, all goes well, is recognized by the BIOS, enter windows ... etc ... Works great but after 30 minutes fix closes without any error message, I'm desperate I did update the bios, I reinstalled windows and nothing. I'm desperate ... please help me. (( ((((( The Temp are OK 45C (

    hi Reichtofer,
Your friend is probably right. In this pdf info sheet, the B590 supports the following CPU:
    HM77 based models − Intel® Core™ i3
    HM77 based models − Intel® Core™ i5
    HM70 based models − Intel® Pentium®
    HM70 based models − Intel® Celeron®
    HM70 CPU/Chipset Compatibility list
    HM77 CPU/Chipset Compatibility list
It looks like you really need to change the motherboard to an HM77 chipset for the CPU to work properly.
Also, although the HM77 chipset does support both the Intel Pentium Dual-Core Mobile 2020M, Intel Core i5-3210M and other various CPU on the list above, looking at page 85 of the hardware maintenance manual, it seems like the BIOS is "restricted" to only use the following CPU:
    - Link to picture
In this case, there's no official way on how to remove the restriction as this is by design and you may need to do as what your friend suggested.

  • Powerbook g4 shut down after turning on for the first time every day

in recent 2 weeks, my g4 suddenly shut down after turning on 5min to several hours the 1st time everyday. after turning on 2nd time, a note show on the screen that "your computer clock is set to a date before March 24th, 2001, this may cause some applicaiton to behavior erratically" and recommed to reset the date and time. but the time is correct when i check the date&time. the battery is not out of power at that time. anyone has the same problem?

I'm not really familiar with System Optimizer, but I guess it is somewhat like Onyx or Cocktail, a system utility. You must be cleaning your caches too deeply. When you launch a document after this, an alert message appears. This relates to Security Update 2004-06-07 which was issued before 10.4 was released. So it existed in Panther, too. I would say if your utility gives you any control of what is cleaned in your caches, be choosy about it. See Dr. Smoke's FAQ here:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
If I might quote one passage:"However, after performing a System-level cache cleaning, you may again see these alerts for previously-approved applications as a System-level cache cleaning may remove the
    com.apple.LaunchServices*.csstore
files in your Computer > Mac OS X > Library > Caches folder. These files save, among other things, information indicating the applications you have previously approved for launch. Some cache-cleaning utilities retain these files to preserve your list of approved applications, while others remove them as they are saved in a System-related cache folder."
However, it would be best if you read the entire FAQ.

  • My MacBook suddenly shut down and won't turn back on - how do I get it to turn back on?

My MacBook suddenly shut down after freezing up and I cannot get it to turn back on again.  I tried the suggestions in the manual and none of them worked to turn it back on. Is there something I am not doing correctly?  The little green light on the charger connector is green but not as bright as normal, it was charged by over 70% before it shut down, so I do not think it is a battery problem.  Is there anything I can do to turn it back on?  Thank you for any help given, I really appreciate it.

If it won't bong, then try an SMC reset.

  • Dual 2.3 GHz G5 suddenly shutting down

We have a Dual 2.3 GHz G5 (production week 10/29/05, Power PPC 970 v.3.0, with 2.5 GHz RAM), running OS 10.4.8. This machine has started to suddenly shut down - like someone pulled the plug with no warning.
After turning itself off like that, we need to wait around 20 minutes before it'll start up again and keep running. Once it has shut itself off, we cannot get to the logon screen without it shutting off suddenly again. After letting it cool down for 20 minutes, it'll run again. So it seems to be heat related in some way.
I've run Temperature Monitor and iStat, and everything looks OK. Of course TechTool Deluxe didn't find anything (does it ever?).
The machine will run for 2-3 hours under load just fine, but will suddenly click and shut off at some point - even when not under a load.
I've checked the System logs and Console logs and can see nothing, except once the system log reported "ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122"
The other times there was no log entry, like it shut down too fast for the log to be written.
Is the power supply going bad? Is there a temperature sensor which is too sensitive?
We'd appreciate any help or suggestions.

o maybe there is something RAM related, but I can't
imagine that RAM would shut the machine completely
    off. Can it?
I believe the problem is thermal related. You may have a processor acting up. Try running Hardware Monitor once, and see what your internal temps are running.

  • Macbook shutting down after 10 seconds of inactivity

    Hi,
My daughters macbook will not power up unless you run your finger over the trackpad, it just shuts down if you are not doing this. This also happens during normal use if left for more than 10 seconds. It puts the the shut down message and powers down the macbook. Any ideas?

Are you still having problems? or is it fixed?
I have just been through a big problem similar to this but mine was shutting down after 40mins.
The reason I said "big" was that I have had the problem when doing large downloads and then having to restart them again only to have it happen again. I had spoken to AppleCare and for more than a year the issue was not resolved.
I was told to take my computer the local 'MacDoctors' and they said they thought it was the Hard Drive and replaced it and then charged me to transfer my data. The data transfer was mucked up (if you don't know what Mucked Up means replace the 'M' with a 'F' and you'll get it) causing more trouble.
It didn't fix the problem but it did mean I couldn't go for a Macca's for a month (kidding - I still went to Maccas but didn't order fries).
Anyway, finally, in desperation and much frustration I thought I would give the Apple Care guys another go and got an 'escalation' guy that really took charge of the problem. He didn't know what to do to fix it but was talking about it to one of his fellow super techosleuths and his friend asked has he looked at the 'Security and Privacy' option in the System Preferences?
Inside that option is an 'Advance' option (OSX 10.7.5) and once opened has a tick box which asks when you want your computer to shut down. Sure enough it was ticked for 40mins - it is now unticked.
I have mentioned this to Applecare people and the MacDoctors and NONE of them had any idea that this tick box was in that section of the system.
Computer shutting down?..... check it out.

  • Mac won't shut down after 10.6.8 update - a possible fix

I noticed that after updating my MacBook Pro to 10.6.8 (using the latest 1.1 combo update) that often times when attempting to shut-down after using Safari the computer would just hang or, I'd get a message that said something like, "OSX didn't log you out because Safari did not quit...".
After putting the system into SAFE BOOT mode and trying to launch Safari I was getting tons of errors about Flash Player plug-in 10.6 crashing.
After downloading the latest Flash player plug-in from Adobe the hang-on-shutdown behavior seems to have stopped.
FYI for those who haven't found a fix.

Hi, I've just come accross the same problem... did you manage to get a resolution??
    Cheers, Chris.

Just a quick update with a couple more details before I go to work:
I left my phone plugged into the wall charger all night long but the Apple logo is still blinking on and off. However, when unplugged from the charger, the screen goes blank and the unit does not respond to pressing/holding the buttons at all. Likewise, flipping the mute switch does not cause the phone to vibrate as it normally would, which made me wonder if power was being disrupted somewhere else in the unit before the battery. I just finished disassembling the unit down to the battery, looked for any loose connections etc., and did spot a suspicious looking spot on top of the #5 ribbon connector that I had not taken notice of before in my first disassembly. I'll take a picture of it and post a link for your consideration later on today when I have a spare moment, although I fear the worst.

  • Hello my ps 2014 can not open it shuts down after 10-15 seconds. the old version run fine

    Hello
my ps 2014 can not open it shuts down after 10-15 seconds. the old version run fine

There are several things you can do I understand.
    1) Check the battery condition using a program like the widget iStatPro (free). If the battery health is less than 80% then Apple have a free replacement program for this.
    2) Switch the machine off and disconnect the power supply. Remove the battery and leave out for several minutes - to allow complete discharge of all electronic components, I think. Then re-instal the battery, etc and restart. I'm not 100% clear on all steps in this procedure but it provides a reset which sometimes resolves problems at least temporarily.
    3) Disconnect all peripherals and see how it works. One of these might be calling for more power than it should.
