T61, T60 - BSOD for Intel WiFi cards, Middleton BIOS, & Win 8.1 & 10

This is an "all-in-one" post. Recently, my trusty T61p started getting Blue Screens of Death (BSOD) with the following message:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQAL in sysnetwlv64.sys This has been frequently reported as a complication of Windows 8.1 (only) when installing the Intel drivers for the 3945 and 4965 WiFi cards.  Both Intel and Microsoft state that these cards, plus the 5200 are no longer supported, but the 6200, 6300, etc. are. Suggested remedies are:
1. For the T61's, reflash with the Middleton BIOS (2.29 plus mods - no white list, SATA 2 works).  Then install a more recent WiFi card that has supported drivers for Win 8.1.
2. Change cards in both the T60 and T61s to the IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad 11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter 42T0825 (this is an Atheros AR5008 5418 AR5BXB72). In recent posts I have seen about Win 10, the old Intel drivers that used to work for Win 8.0 (but didn't in 8.1) appear to work in Win 10.  (However, since it is still before July 29, I can only assume this is in preview versions, not RTM).  If anyone has actually in installed the Win 10 RTM and had no problems, this whole thing may be a "non-issue".  Is there any experience with this? If I follow the remedies suggested above:
1. Using the replace the card approach with the Middleton BIOS, what is a good card to get?  The other benefit of the Middleton BIOS is to allow the harddrives in the T-61's as SATA 2 instead of the dumbed-down SATA 1 as in the stock 2.29, 2.30 BIOS
2. If I follow the replace with the Atheros cards, I assume the best approach is to see if there are 3 antennas in the T60 (the T61's already have them).  If not, I understand that I can add the 3rd antenna with FRU 42R9909. For specific machine configurations, see the specs at the bottom (they're all "FrankenPads"). Many thanks for looking and your comments... --------------------------------------T-61p -- 15.4" WXSGA+, Win 8.1 64-bit, BIOS 2.30, CPU-T9500 2.6 GHz (Penryn), RAM 8GB DDR2-667 (2x4GB), HD 500GB (7200RPM, SATA 2, WD5000BPKT-00PK4T0), NVIDIA Quadro F570FM (1680x1050 - 9.18.13.2702), DVD-RAM, WiFi Intel 4965 (13.3.0.137), Ethernet Intel 82566MM (9.13.41.3), Ricoh Media Cardbus (6.3.9600.16384), Biometric CPU (1.6.1.341), Conexant Modem (7.62.0.0), Broadcom Bluetooth (12.0.0.8047) T-61 -- 14.1" WXGA+, Win 8.1 64-bit, BIOS 2.30, CPU-T7800 2.6 GHz (Merom), RAM 8GB DDR2-667 (2x4GB), HD 320GB (7200RPM, SATA 3, WD3200BEKX-22B7W4T0), NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M (1440x900 - 9.18.13.2702), DVD-RAM, WiFi Intel 4965 (13.3.0.137), Ethernet Intel 82566MM (9.13.41.3), Biometric CPU (1.6.1.341), Conexant Modem (7.62.0.0), Broadcom Bluetooth (12.0.0.8047) T-60 -- 14.1" XGA, Win 8.1 32-bit, BIOS 2.27, TPM 1.2, CPU-T7600 2.3 GHz (Merom), RAM 3GB usable DDR2-667 (2x2GB), HD 320GB (7200RPM, SATA 2, WD3200BEKT-00PVM4T0), Intel Graphics 945 Express (1024x768 - 8.15.10.2697), DVD-RAM, WiFi Intel 3945ABG (13.3.0.137), Ethernet Intel PRO/1000PL (9.15.11.0), Biometric CPU (1.6.1.341), Conexant Modem (7.62.0.0), Broadcom Bluetooth (12.0.0.8047)

I'd say go with Middleton BIOS either way (SATA II). In which case, get a newfangled 802.11ac card while you're at it.

I need to replace my current single band wifi card and have tried the alternatives listed in the user manual.  On boot BIOS returns "incompatible wifi device system halted"
I have tried 3 different Broadcom cards and an Intel card with the same results.  ALL of the ones I have tried are supposed to work (as per user manual)
    What will work

  • HP 15 TouchSmart Notebook PC upgrade for stock wifi card

I would like to know what wifi card I can buy to replace the stock card in my Notebook:
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3110M CPU @ 2.40GHz
    BIOS version F.17
    Windows 8.1 64 bit
    TIA

In my experience, most laptops don't support being able to replace these kind of components with 3rd party options. If the wifi card has failed, you would have to purchase one with the same part number or risk your motherboard/bios not recognizing the card. It is more than just a driver issue. Many manufacturers will write support for only a few (sometimes, only one or two) cards into the bios. There may be a way if you are comfortble modding your bios, but that is beyond my ability to talk you through.

  • Satellite C50: Has anyone ugraded Atheros to Intel WiFi card?

Has anyone actually replaced the Atheros wifi card with the Intel centrino one?
If so can you recommend one with 2.4/5mps.
Does the C50 have two internal antennae?
I take it the card in under the keyboard?

    Hi
Hmm I guess even if keyboard removal isnt very difficult for people with disassembling experiences, you would lose the warranty.
Therefore I would think twice performing such procedure.
But I guess you will need to disassemble the whole notebook (removal of bottom cover would be necessary) in order to get access the WLan card.
In my opinion this is more tricky as an simple keyboard removal.
If I would be you, I would ask some authorized service engineer for WLan card replacement.

  • Problem with islsm drivers for my wifi card

Hello! I'm using stable version of Arch Linux with newest beyound kernel (2.6.19 AFAIR) and trying to compile islsm drivers for my wifi pci card.
I've downloaded source like it is showed in http://prism54.org/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=1557 and cut headers like it is showed in: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … +directory
(i used 'sed -i /linux.config.h/d *' because i didn't compile kernel by self and make searches config file).
Unfortunately after make load i get:

Could anybody help me with this problem, any advice is welcome.
    Thank you.
    EDIT
Ok, there was no problem:) It's enough to copy *.ko files /lib/modules/KERNEL/misc and load them by modprobe.
This thread can be deletad, thank you.

Hi: Unfortunately, the support pages are not working for most of the newer HP PC's. It has been that way for about a day now. Since I am not employed by nor do I represent HP, I am not sure when they will have the pages working again. Check back again some other time. With the Independence Day holiday weekend in the USA, I would not expect this to be taken care of immediately.

  • T400 Intel WiFi Card 5100 drops connection.

Hello. We are receiving T400 laptops.  These laptops do not hold a wireless connection for any length of time.  They also have a hard time connecting at boot up.  Item that have been tried...
    01) Removed and re-installed Drivers.
    02) Removed and reinstalled Access Connections. (Leap Authorization is used)
    03) Removed and replaced the Wireless Card. FRU 43Y6943.
We are using Windows Xp with SP 2.  The laptop runs fine and we have no complaints with the exception of the wireless.  I might mention that we had the same issue with T61 Models.  To resolve this issue, we removed the B/G/N card and installed B/G cards.  We do not utilize "N" Band, so we do not need this capability.  I was looking for a way to do the same to the T400 Laptops, but I am unable to find a compatible B/G card to use.  The BIOS generates the 1082 error if we attempt to use a card that is not approved for the model.  Any assistance would be appreciated...
    Thanks. Bob...

Your right about it not listing T400 for this driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-52527 but trust me we have T400's and switched to this driver because with the latest driver for what ever reason would bluescreen when you press ctrl+alt+del and click change password.  It's weird but trust me I had troubleshooted everything and was at a lost until I found anothe blog that this guy mentioned and tested it out and guess what it worked.  Uninstall the wireless from device manager and run the setup.exe and delete previous installation and reboot.  It's that simple.  It will install the wireless card that came with the T400 without you having to swap the cards.

  • MOVED: once again...bsod...video card needs bios up-date?

This topic has been moved to VGA products.

    Quote
i don't think ANYONE, from what i can see, by reading in the MSI forums, has any idea. one gentleman sent his big bang xpower MB back THREE times only to have it give the same error over and over again. so you see, i think MSI tech or INTEL tech NEED to come up with an answer AND a solution.
Several thoughts on the BSOD's. It still can be memory related in the respect the CPU IMC is being a PITA. Since it natively only supports 1066 plus the fact it has to deal with 12GB, it just might not like it. To compensate, the memory is probably going to have to be manually tweaked in the bios. I have gotten 12GB RAM to work on this board with a 3X4GB kit, so the board itself is capable. If you haven't done so yet, get a detailed ticket open with MSI Tech Support. If the engineers can't duplicate the problem, or aren't told about it directly, it is going to be difficult for a magical fix to emerge. As for the individual & his three boards, it's possible they are doing something wrong over & over again. The PCI-E lane assignments on this board are rather selective, so a lot depends on how the VGA's & add-in cards are placed in the available slots. I can only say I have built three of these boards, & apart from a glitch with a PCI-E1 circuit on one of them, they have performed very well. No RAID, no SSD, no 12GB RAM (other than just for testing), no SLI (other than for testing).
Here's my recommendation, #1 is get a ticket in with MSI, I know it's time consuming, but suggest to barebones it adding an element at a time until the problem source can be isolated. Maybe try with just the OS on the platter HDD? There again, it could just be a matter of tweaking the RAM, disabling Spread Spectrum, making sure XMP is disabled, etc.
Added: Wouldn't completely rule out the PSU not performing up to expected standards either. Although not mandatory, do you have JPWR3 & JPWR4 powered as well?

  • T61 blank lcd...video card or bios mem?

New to the community, and have looked around a bit but haven't quite found a post with my exact problem. I believe the issue is either my nvidia graphics card or my RAM. Or something else completely.
Recently was playing an rpg (not a big one like WoW; a small BFG download), when the screen suddenly began flashing and appeared to have horizontal lines and box capsules. Powered down, but flashing would always begin again after the Windows screen. A few times I was alerted that I had a problem with the nv4_disp but before I could read the entire screen with this message it would shut down by itself. Powered on in Safe Mode with Networking, and did some research. Went to nvidia site. Many people had this same problem, supposedly related to overtasking the BIOS memory timing. A lenovo-sanctioned beta fix was offered (I am always very very suspicious, but this was legit though beta), so I downloaded and installed.
When it restarted, I no longer saw the Windows splash screen or anything. Blank black lcd though it is clearly on, and the fans are working and the indicator lights for battery/plugin are working. Went to my netbook to troubleshoot this new problem; I determined if it was the monitor itself (it wasn't), and tried a complete power down and restart. There is no beep code on startup, but there is a single beep upon powering down. If I am right that the T61 7662 has an AMIBios(?), then this single beep means there is a memory refresh timer error (the beep did sound a bit different from the shut down standard beep, but who knows). I may have to buy new RAM. I also tried clearing the CMOS manually by reseating the CMOS battery. Did not work, though I was hopeful.
My warranty is expired, but I've heard in all kinds of forums that these problems are acknowledged by nvidia or lenovo and might be covered. Not sure. I have XP and 2G RAM currently. Don't really know where to go from here, and I am a student so I don't want to pay lenovo to talk to me if it will waste time (I once did troubleshooting with them over the phone for 4 hours, in which I was told to talk to COMCAST and then Netgear, when I knew it was a lenovo problem, and finally got sent back to lenovo who then was like, 'oh yeah, just check this box here. sorry.' I was under warranty then, but I know we've all been there...the endless troubleshooting!)
Please help! Thank you for your expertise.
EDIT: Possibly related to this issue:garbled display/lenovo accountability failure/replacing motherboards due to gpu
and I have experienced overheating issues (the fan was replaced last year), faulty dvd-rom (had to be replaced when I first got my unit), and others. I don't think I will ever buy lenovo again, given my experiences and that replacing the motherboard seems to not work.

from what you are describing it sounds like an issue with the nvidia gpu.

  • Faster WIFI Card for Toshiba L455D Laptop

Looking for a wifi card to replace the ATL8187SE card in my L455D.  My reason for wanting to do this is because the 8187 max. download speed is aroung 20 Mbps and I need a card that can double this speed so I can take advantage of my 50 Mbps provided by my internet provider.
    Thanks

Not sure what the issue is that's resulting in a change for you. However, the MBP's wireless reception has always been comparatively poor relative to many other laptops. It's not a Mac issue per se, it's the aluminum casing, which blocks the wireless signal whereas polycarbonate does not. MacBooks (non-Pro) get significantly better reception than MBPs with the same wireless card.
Nevertheless, to answer your question, here's an ExpressCard 802.11n adapter and a cheaper USB 802.11n adapter that will work with your MBP.
    Hope this helps...

  • TX2500 (and other TX's??) with BROADCOM 4321 WiFi cards, Win7

Maybe I'm the only one here with this problem, although given HP's history, I doubt that very much. So I have a TX2510z, and even though I customized the heck out of this thing,  for some silly reason, I didn't buy the Intel WiFi card. (My Bad, never again!!). I have had almost continual problems with the WiFi connecting to Enterprise class wireless access points. (Such as Cisco, Sonicwall, and a couple others.) I've NEVER had a problem with residential class AP's (Linksys blue boxes, D-Link, Belkin, Etc.) I've replaced the WiFI card like three times now (thank Greyskull I DID buy the extended warranty and ADR package!!!!) I spent more hours talking to a "Service Case Manager" than I did to my wife for a while there. I finally had had enough, and in a fit of loathing, upgraded to Win 7 (enterprise 64), hoping that a more advanced OS would have better drivers. It kinda did, for a while. Almost all features of the WiFi card were working until yesterday. All of a sudden I lost all of my associations, and had to re-connect to them with the wizard. Oddly, one of the Ciscos I had been using, I couldnt add manually now. I had to use the wizard. WHen I came home to my Belkin, which had been flawless to this point wasn't even visible to the TX now. ALL of my other devices were interacting with the Belkin appropriately. I even attempted to manually add with a fixed IP addy, but it was like it wasn't there. It was exactly how the TX had been acting under Vista. Randomly ignoring AP's. I was about an inch from throwing the whole thing out into the snow. I happened to find a link which appears to have solved my problems (at least for now). :::
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=uk&prodTypeId=32...
And here is the forum thread I found it in. :::
    Microsoft Support Forum
As I  said, so far its working. I will find out how it manages the Ciscos tomorrow at work. If anyone has been having the WiFi issue with their TX series and Broadcom WiFi, please post something so I at least know I'm not alone/ crazy. I hope this post can help if you are haveing these issues.

I'd say go with Middleton BIOS either way (SATA II). In which case, get a newfangled 802.11ac card while you're at it.

  • X201 Access Connections doesn't recognize WiFi card

    Hi
A week or so ago I ran Lenovo System Update, which prompted me to update the drivers for my WiFi card (Intel 6200-AGN). After the update Access Connections can no longer recognize the card. Windows still connects automatically to wireless networks through the built-in software, but Access Connections not working is really bothering me.
I've tried rolling back the wireless drivers (my current version is now 14.3.0.6, dated 10/27 2011), but with no luck. As far as I can see, there have been no updates to Access Connections for quite a while (it's hard to tell due to system update itself recently being updated), but is it worth a try uninstalling it and reinstalling an older version? My current version is 5.97, oddly the version listed on the support page for the x201-3626 is 5.62, but all my Lenovo software comes from Lenovo System Update.
Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It's a new version AC related issue. Uninstall it and install previous version 5.93, manually.

  • Wifi card not recognized after reboot.

I've got a Lenovo X140e and an Intel wifi card. (Intel Corporation Wireless-N 7260) that I installed myself, since the support for the Broadcom card it came with was spotty.
If I reboot my laptop, the card won't show up with either iwconfig or even lspci. If I do a cold reboot (power down entirely and start back up), it will show up just fine.
    What gives?
    Relevant lspci output:
01:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 4b)
            Subsystem: Intel Corporation Wireless-N 7260
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 38
            Memory at f1300000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K]
            Capabilities: <access denied>
            Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
            Kernel modules: iwlwifi

When the card is recognized, rfkill lists it as unblocked; when it's not recognized, it doesn't show up at all.
I've got i3 installed; for connection management I've been sort of trying different things - netctl never works but wifi-menu has been pretty reliable. I haven't installed any special power management stuff at all - I'm not really sure how to find out what was auto-installed?

  • Windows 7 Driver for Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG

    Hi,
I've upgraded my MotionComputing LE1600 Tablet from Vista Business to Windows 7. A relatively seemless process and a more efficient OS. However, I need the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG driver for my WiFi card or maybe even a generic one? Anyway have a suggestions?
    Thanks,
    j

I have a DELL Lattitude D830 with the Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN. I upgraded from Vista Business 32bit and all of the netwrok connections (wired and wireless) went out. The wireless told me I had an invalid IP configuration and that I could connect locally, but not internet. Looked like a DHCP issue - couldn't get a valid IP configuration, coudn't specify static IP information.
I tried *everything* to get the network to work. Luckily, I stumbled across this post. If you aren't familiar with it (I wasn't), in order to install in Vista Compatibility mode, right-click on the .msi and choose "Troubleshoot Compatibility", then choose Vista from the list of OSs. I DID get the latest drivers, both from Dell and Intel (The one that I installed was from Dell, haven't tried the Intel version which is slightly newer under this process). You may have to get the newest version to get it working - not sure.

  • Device failed to start - Code 10 - Intel Wireless Card on NB550D

    Hi everyone,
    It's just a normal Toshiba NB550D netbook
The only thing that I change is the Wireless Card inside it: the original is a common Atheros half mini card. Recently I have the urge to use internet in 5 ghz (frequency).
Thus, I decide to replace the old one with the *half mini card Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN*
It doesn't turn out so well. The driver is not recognised or more precisely the windows tries to install the driver but FAIL is reported. Device manager tool shows an "!" next to the network card and when I go the its properties at general tab: "*The device failed to start - Code 10*"
I tried many ways to uninstall the driver and reinstall again ; also tried to download drivers from toshiba website for intel network card.
Nothing works so far and yeah I just don't know what to do now.
The possibility that the intel card is broken or malfunctioned is eliminated because I checked that with another laptop already and it just worked like a charm.
Please help me solve this problem. I really need to use dual band (2.4 and 5 ghz) internet.
    Appreciate any help!!

    >The possibility that the intel card is broken or malfunctioned is eliminated because I checked that with another laptop already and it just worked like a charm
    Regarding the error code 10:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943104/en-us
+The Code 10 error pertains mainly to hardware and device driver issues or to compatibility issues between hardware drivers and additional software that is installed in Windows.+
I dont think its Wlan card issue it could be a compatibility problem between the BIOS and the WLan card.
Not all devices are supported by BIOS.
But at the other hand the WLan card appears already in device manager and therefore I think there should not be a BIOS compatibility issue.
Did you check if chipset would handle the Wlan card properly?
