T61: Very slow transfer/copy (write) speeds, disk goes offline, for 1TB HGST (in 2nd HD caddy)

I put in a small 250GB Samsung SSD in my aging T61 (T7300 2GHz, 4GB RAM). Results while mixed are better than my existing 1TB HGST drive. I also decided to move my 1TB drive to the 2nd HD caddy (in place of the DVDRW).
However, I noticed that the transfer (write) speed is extremely poor. Shortly thereafter during transfers, it aborts, and the 2nd HDD goes offline (and is not even visible in Windows Explorer). Checking Device Manager does not reveal any lack of or missing drivers. I did however run Samsung's Magician software (with reliable settings, instead of high performance settings). I wonder if that made any changes to cause this.
I am wondering if it would make more sense to boot off of SSD in the 2nd HD caddy instead of the primary bay, have not tried this option?
Any additional configuration help/ideas/tips will be gratefully appreciated!

Your SSD will be able to read/write at speeds upto SATA1 specs allow (1.5 Gb/s). This can be increased to upto 3.0Gb/s if you install the "middleton" bios which is a lenovo bios that was modified by a 3rd party, however transfers to your ultrabay will be reduced to PATA speeds so even though you have an SATA drive, your max transfer speed will be limited by the interface. This usually isn't a problem because most users keep the data that requires fast access on the primary drive like your OS, installed programs and swap files and use the second drive just for storage.
This should explain the speed issues, but not why your drive is cutting out. If you're using a generic adapter that could be the cause. I've seen some that have poorly fitted connectors and when it comes to generic parts it's difficult to tell the good ones from the bad and the genuine adapters are difficult to find. The only easy way I can think of to confirm this theory would be to substitute a known good part which would be a problem if you don't have one handy.

You're welcome, j. If not enough free space availabe is the issue, now is a good time to upgrade to a much larger HD, as prices have never been better. Clear, illustrated directions are available at ifixit.com, macsales.com, powerbookmedic.com, youtube and others. Macsales, amazon and newegg have a nice selection of HDs, while the latter two also have lots of user reviews.
Given that your MBP is 4-5 years old, and the average life-span of a HD is 3-5 years . . . .
Given that you have a 17" MBP, you can install any capacity HD currently available, just make sure it's 2.5", SATA, and 12.5mm high or less (there's at least one Seagate monster out there that's 14-15mm high). All other things being equal, a 5400RPM HD is going to use less battery power, run cooler, quieter, and with less vibration, and, of course, run a bit slower than a 7200. An SSD is also a possibility (a very expensive one), but you're not going to see anywhere near the speed bump as newer machines due to the SATA 1 (1.5Gbps) SATA/HD bus bottelneck.

  • Mac Pro RAID 5 disk goes offline frequently in a random way. What can be causing this odd behavior?

    Hi dudes,
I installed recently two Mac Pro RAID cards inside their corresponding Mac Pro systems. Four 2 TB Hitachi SATA disks are contained inside each system, and configured as RAID 5. Yes, the operating system is installed on this RAID 5 volume in order to get the highest performance of the array, taking advantage of the RAID 5 protection (Autodesk Smoke runs in each system; this application works only with uncompressed video in real time). I already had tested both systems keeping separated the boot disk just for the operating system, and making the RAID 5 volume just with three 2 TB disks, but the performance was slow on both systems.
The performance is now very good, but unfortunately, in both systems happens that sometimes one of the disks goes offline with no apparent reason. The RAID Utility immediately reports the failure and it is mandatory to declare as spare the disk that went offline. Then the rebuild process begins, but in the meantime, the performance goes down in a noticeable way. Sometimes it is even worse, because the disk disappears completely. Then, it is mandatory to turn off the system, and boot it up again, in order to see in the RAID Utility the missing disk, which needs to be declared as spare in order to be reintegrated into the RAID 5 volume in a slow rebuilding process.
Some important remarks: this very new Mac Pro systems do not have the iPass cable (at least apparently; I already disassembled completely one of these systems). This cable is mentioned in one Mac RAID card manual that I found over the internet. The diagrams do not match exactly with the Mac Pro nor the Mac Pro RAID board. I did not find a proper iPass connector in any of the Mac Pro RAID cards (?!). So, my guess is that currently the communication between the system and its Mac Pro RAID card is just by means of the internal bus. I think that if the iPass connection were mandatory, the RAID Utility would report it with a noticeable error message. Please advise.
I think that these Mac Pro RAID cards need a firmware upgrade, in order to be able to work fine with big SATA drives. Again, please advise.
    Thanks in advance from Mexico.
    Sincerely,
    Martin Ponce de Leon

    Hi Grant,
Thank you for your prompt response. The manual is a PDF document issued by Apple and it seems OK, but no updated to the latest Mac Pro system and Mac Pro RAID. I do not find the link where I found this manual. The systems belong to one of our customers. As far as I remember, in the printed manual included with the boards, it is not mentioned anything about the iPass cable, just about the battery cable. Do you know where can I get a PDF manual of the latest Mac Pro RAID card and the latest Mac Pro system? This client is far from our offices. So, I would prefer a PDF copy of this manual.
The drives that have gone offline, once they are back, are reported in a good status in the RAID Utility. Besides that, I have tested them in another system in our facilites, and all of them work fine. So, my guess is that the high capacity drives are not yet supported by the Mac Pro RAID card, or it requires a firmware update.
They do need to have in the same volume OS and video storage because three disks do no provide a good performance (they need also RAID 5), but four disks work fine... excepting when one disk is missing. Please advise. Thank you.
    Best Regards,
    Martin

  • Skype Desktop - very slow transfer speeds

Hi. Ever since 6.x was released, it became almost impossible to send files. What changed, and what can I do to fix this issue?
Please do not redirect me to that same "catch-all" thread for this issue. I am well aware that others have had this problem. Yes, I have the "Send anon usage/performance info" setting enabled.
I am getting speeds ~1-3KB/sec for every transfer, no matter the person or group
    Info:
    Windows 8.1 x64
    Skype Desktop v7.4.0.102
    Core2Quad 2.8ghz / 8GB RAM / Geforce 550 GTX Ti
    75/75Mbit ISP connection
As you can see, I have MORE than enough resources to send files at my highest connection speeds (10.1MB/sec). I have tried setting static ports for skype and allowing them through my router, tried different combinations of Skype connection settings, turning off my OS firewall, and even tried setting my machine in the DMZ. Nothing has increased Skype's ability to send files quickly. So, what is going on?
EDIT :: Just uploaded my DXDiag results in ZIP archive

Did you get a reply to this?  I have been having similar issues with extremely slow file transfers.  It seems independant of who I am sending the files to.  Also I notice when I am sending a  file not only does it go slowly it slows downmy whole internet (so it seems to be using a whole lot more bandwidth than just the data of the actual file I am sending).  I have the latest skype and IE and never had issues previously.

I have a strange problem. USB 2.0 is very slow, if I copy from T61 to usb stick or usb hdd  my copy speed is 13-15MByte /s under Windows XP I hade 28 29 MByte/s
If I download a file or copy big files to my usb HDD I only reach a speed of 15MByte / s
    what can be the reason?
    Do I need Bios upgrade?
    Solved!

    Hello,
I believe the upgrade assistance for Windows 8 will notify you of incompatible applications during the upgrade process.
You could also download Lenovo's ThinkVantage System Update application and run it afterwards, just to see if it does detect any drivers or ThinkVantage software updates (as unlikely as that sounds for this generation of computer).

I am trying to transfer 80 gb to my Time Capsule (Ethernet) but transfer is very slow (100 kb/s). How can I fix it?

Plug the TC into the Computer by ethernet and make sure the computer shows the link is running at gigabit.. if not replace the cable.
Turn off wireless.. there should be only one data path.. ethernet.
Turn IPv6 to link local only in the computer network setup for ethernet.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration
It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Very slow wirelesss when using iPhone 4S' personal hotspot for a MacBook Pro (MBP)...

    Hello.
Last night, I was helping a client with his old iPhone 4S' personal hotspot as shown in http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4517 web page. It uses Verizon Wireless 3G for his 4 GB data cellular connection. We got the wireless (WPA2) connection to work fine, but it was very slow like crappy dial-up modem speeds. Is this normal? iPhone's iOS v8.1.2's top screen says 1X (is this a speed number?) and left of MBP. Updated Mac OS X 10.8.5's top screen shows an infinite(?) symbol instead of that wifi arc symbol.
    Thank you in advance.

yes, 1x is a speed indicator, and it is very slow. Even with 3g speeds, hotspot will be pretty slow, but still ok for simple surfing and emails and such, streaming not so much. For hotspot, you really kinda want to have at least 4g, preferably LTE.
About that 1x speed, you may want to see if you get that everywhere or just in that location. Ideally, in a good coverage area, you should not be getting such slow speeds. Might have something to do with the building you are in though. If you get the same outdoors, and your coverage area is good, you may want to call in and have someone troubleshoot your signal.

  • Why does ASM drop a disk (LUN) after it goes offline for a period ?

    Grid version: 11.2
By default, ASM drops a LUN 3.6 hours after it goes/taken offline. This can be delayed using DISK_REPAIR_TIME. But , why does oracle do this on the first place ? Can't we wait till storage team fixes the issue ?

    Hi GarryB,
as long as a disk is set to offline, you don't have full mirroring. (Since the blocks on the disk are not remirrored as long as the disks is offline).
Now let a disk in another FG fail too... You might loose data.
Hence choosing the disk repair timer correctly is not that easy. On exadata the time is increased to 48 hours.
And since 3,6 is only the default (diskgroup parameter) you can always change it yourself (given the precautions above).

i own HP G6-2005AX, i got it with TOSHIBA HARD DISK,Model - (MK5076GSX) my problem is that while transferrig data from C drive to any other drive, the speed is very vety low (6-9 MB/S).is there a problem in my laptop? i have bought it on 22 0ct 2012, i still have 1 year accidental warranty, can i get it replaced?,can i get hard disk of some other company?(same capacity)
i can post scrrenshot if required.

    Hi,
If you weren't using USB, then were you were transferring data between partitions or to a multimedia flash drive?
Have you mistaken a partition (primary or logical partition) for a physical drive?
Your notebook has four partitions, unless you have changed the original factory partitioning scheme. C: D: System and HP_Tools.
The following image shows how my loaner  Envy17-3002ea is organized. It is a bit different as it has two physical 750 GB hard disks. Everything as showng inside Disk 0 is a partition.
What software did you use to determine the transfer speed?
Which CPU is installed in your notebook?

  • Very slow transfer speeds with external hard drives through Firewire and US

    Hi All,
My external drives transfer very slowly on my MacPro. I've been searching for answers and have turned up very little. Apple support suggested I post my issue here. Just to make a note, I measured my disk speeds with both AJA System Test and copying files between drives and reading the Disk Activity in Activity Monitor.
I have 3 external drives, all MyBook Premium or Professional, 1x 500GB, 1x 1TB and 2x 1TB in RAID 0. I had them on Firewire 400 and the RAID 0 2TB one on Firewire 800. My transfers on FW were all around 24MB/sec on all drives (much less than what I should be getting with FW400). I then read somewhere that the FW bus on the MacPro uses the slowest speed connected for all FW connections. So I unplugged everything but the FW800 Raid 0 drive and my transfer rate jumped to 40-60MB/sec. This is much better, but still about half or so of what I expect it should be producing from an external RAID 0 setup.
To keep my FW800 backup drive faster, I've plugged the other two into USB2.0. The transfer speeds on both drives are now hideous, around 10-15MB/sec. This is so slow, but I'm not sure what to try to fix my speeds.
The HD's in the external drives are all 7200rpm, and all should be transferring at a higher rate. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Ideally I'd like to get everything transferring at rates they should be transferring at, but I'll settle with my current FW800 speed of 40-60MB/sec if I can get my other two drives transferring at a non-snail pace.
Is this a common issue? I can't believe I'm the only one plugging multiple external hard drives into their Mac Pro. I hope someone has a fix or solution for this. I'm all ears!
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Kappy, thanks for the information.
So I rejigged my setup a tad. My RAID 0 is still FW800, the second drive is back on FW400 on the back port, and the third is USB 2.0 on the back as well.
It's interesting to note that I saw the FW800 taking a bandwidth hit if the FW400 drives was being read/written to. For example, if I was averaging 50-60MB/sec on the FW800 drives and copy something large to the FW400 drive, each drive averages out to about 30/MB second, roughly half the FW800 speed I was getting. The USB while the slowest didn't cause any slowness on the FW drives.
Here are my Xbench results. These results are from each drive being benchmarked individually with no other drives being tested at the same time.

  • Very slow transfer speeds with Airport Extreme and MacBook

I have been using a new Airport Extreme without problem at my home for the past six weeks. The speed and range was excellent with both my MacBook Pro and the MacBook which I purchased a few weeks ago. I came out to Greece with both laptops and a new AP Extreme box for my home network here. After set up I noticed that internet access was lethargic on the MacBook and file transfer between the two computers was extremely slow. The problem seems to be with the new MacBook (although it was working well in London). I've done some speed tests and the internet download speed is only 48 kpbs! I also notice that the range is very poor--in the room next to the router I am down to five bars. If I connect to the AP Extreme with cable I get the full 1Mbps I would normally expect here in Athens (ADSL nominal 2Mbps). The MacBook Pro has no problems with wireless access speeds or range, so I am assuming this has to be a problem with the AP extreme card in the MacBook. Is there anything I have overlooked? Perhaps something to do with setting up the new AP Extreme here in Athens?

By process of elimination I realised that the only cause of the sudden slowness must be software that I had installed recently. The only software I had added was a wifi utility to detect available networks--open or protected. Unlikely as it sounds, quitting the utility (which I had set to load on startup) made a dramatic improvement in performance.
