T61 wobbly hinges/lid

Hi, I have a T61 that is under warrenty but it has really wobbly hinges. The lid has about an inch of play on it which makes it useless when it is on my lap. I have done some research and found out that this is a common problem with the T61 and that people have had it repaired under warrenty. I phoned up Lenovo and the advisor said it was not covered under warrenty as that problem should not have happened and therefore must be caused by the user.
Does anyone have an advice regarding this issue?

Call again and say that you want to appeal the decision. I don't know about repair options in UK. In the US, I would take it to a Lenovo Dealer who was authorized to do warranty repair. With things like this, you are better off showing it to a human being. Also, the dealer gets paid for the work if he does the repair. He gets nothing if he declines.

  • T61 Opening/Closing Lid Changes Display on Windows 7

    Hello!
I have T61 laptop running Win 7 which I have installed the Latest BIOS (version 2.27) & Display Drivers (Nvidia) and the external LCD-monitor to the analog VGA-port. I make to FN+F7 "projector only" for view to the external LCD-monitor. But when i close and re-open the lid the automatically changes on the laptop display ("computer only" to FN+F7 menu). It's not handy very.
    I found this topic
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/T61-Opening-Closing-Lid-Changes-Display-...
but when my laptop running Win XP i have not this problem.
    I found
"Fixed an issue where the external display might have blank screen after closing the lid "When I close the lid: Do nothing" was selected in Power Options on Windows Vista."
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-68451
but i have BIOS 2.27 and don't help.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Try the Vista driver:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67231
After the download, you might have to go into C>Drivers>Win>Display and run the setup file from there.
    Good luck.

  • T61 Loose Hinge - Does the warranty cover this issue?

Hello, I bought the T61 in 2008 with 3 year warranty in USA. My T61 is showing the loose hinge problem which has been encountered by many other forum users. Right now I'm in Chennai, India and the Lenovo warranty center in Alwarpet, Chennai says the hinge problem is not covered under warranty. Could any one from Lenovo confirm this for me. Thank you, Thaniks

Yes lead_org, it snapped and half piece stayed in its place inside the bezel.  I didnot know that the piece was disconnected so I tried to open and it close once , which caused the bezel plastic where is covers the hinge to open up.
At that stage I closed the lid and opened up a case to ship the box. I did take pictures before shipping the laptop , the laptop was never dropped, there were no body cracks or any other damages other than the broken hinge and lcd bezel plastic bending where the broken piece is in contact.
Only the right hinge is broken, the left one is intact.
Preventive maintenance was the first time I heard for electonic items from any hardware vendors.

  • Wobbly display lid macbook pro

hello sorry if this question is a repeat, but i haven't found a discussion specified to this
i noticed my macbook pro screen is very wobbly. Everytime i type, the lid shakes back and forth.
heres a link to show you what i am talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DQI0ukUfMs
i went to the genius bar twice. the first they said they tightened the hinges, but i didn't really see any difference
the second time another guy told me that there was nothing they could do cause the hinges don't work in that direction. they said that it's normal for it to wobble because of the cases add weight...
so i am wondering i paid $300 for applecare, can apple not fix this problem even under the applecare warranty?
also with the ghost marks from the logo screen that you can see in a black screen, has anyone gotten that covered under their warranty?

The ghost circle and line in the center of the screen is caused by excessive pressure on the back of the display when the machine is closed. In other words, it's user-inflicted, not a manufacturing defect, and so not covered.

  • T61 / Tolerance of lid

The lid of my T61 has about 1 inch tolerance when moving before I can feel a resistance and actually are changing the angle of the lid. This gives it a cheap impression.
I am wondering if other owners share the same issue.

  • Canoscan LiDE 210 won't work on my macbook pro

Can't get my scanner to work on my macbood pro, OSX 10.8.4.  I've downloaded the driver for the scanner and the MP Navigator EX 5.02.  MPNav won't even open.  LIsts only a few Canon products supported.  EXTREMELY frustrating.

I should have clarified I was referenceing the software as Canoscan LiDE 5.0.1.4 for Mac OS X. It appears to be the most current version.
The scanner is a Canon model CanoScan LiDE 600F. After posting, I found and installed the current scanner driver. Same results with a subsequent scan attempts. The preview displays the full picture, but finished horz. image is clipped at the top and shows part of the sprocket holes at the bottom of the frame.
But after teasing the piece of film into the most extream position against the bottom edge of the holder with a toothpick I was able to trial and error some full frame images with minimal clipping. I suspect it is a software problem. Probably some focusing or alignment algorythm
The film adapter is a 13"X4" device that lays on the larger glass, a cable plugs into a port labled FAU and the device engages two magnetic latches to exactly position the film adapter. The adapter itself has a hinged lid and seems to be disigned for a 35 mm strip of film, not an idividual cut frame. The larger scanner lid is double hindged, so it can close over the film adapter when its mounted on scanner bed.

  • Broken hinges on a old Satellite P20

My widescreen P20 has broken hinges and I hear this is a common problem :( I took it to be fixed and they said it's not just the hinges but the inside of the lid too so it is unfixable. I need to find one for spares, at the moment I'm unable to touch the lid let alone close it!
I'm hoping if I buy the outside casing of a laptop, or just the lid, I can have my inside put into it. Does anyone know where I can get one? I have checked ebay and looked on this site but no luck so far.

    Hi
I dont think its a common problem
This problem is that the internal displays of notebooks got bigger and the notebook size smaller.
The notebook has small hinges within the screen so all the force is applied on a very small area causing the plastic cover cracks.
I have to say that this issue is not brand specific.
By the way all parts; hinges, lid, covers can be ordered from the Toshiba service partner in your country

  • My mid-2009 MacBook Pro's hard drive is near death. I want to install a new SSD and work from scratch. Please help.

Recently, my mid-2009 MacBook Pro has been crashing when I close the screen ("it's having a problem recognizing when the screen is closed/open and deciding what to do, error overload etc.").  It wasn't an SMC issue so I took it to an Apple Store, ran some tests, and decided my hard-drive is failing.
Not wanting to spend an insane amount of money on some "official apple hard-drive," I want to install a new 256GB SSD instead.  Hoping to squeeze as much life out of this computer as possible (in January I upgraded from 4 GB RAM to 8 GB), I would like to try and start from scratch, i.e. back-up important folders, music, photos etc. and only take that to the new hard-drive.  If someone could explain all the steps I need to take to safely complete this task (or point me in the direction of a guide) I'd appreciate it.
    Potentially Important info:
         Model:                mid-2009 13'' MacBook Pro
Processor:          2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
         Memory:             4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
         Software:            OS X 10.8.4
    Some additional questions I have...
Should I be concerned with making a fully bootable back-up (not sure what that is called) as well?  If so, what program should I use to create it?
How much more life should I try and push out of this computer?  I'm an engineering student and really only use it for web-surfing, music, and
word-processing.  The batter was replaced in March, the RAM was upgraded to 8 GB in January.  When the battery was swapped, the trackpad went           nuts so that's new too.  Only other issues are a slightly loose audio jack and the left side of the screen being slightly wobbly (hinge is worn I'm told).

Well there is no "official Apple HD / SSD" in any regard, no worries there.
If as you say youre only using same for surfing and word processing, why the need for a SSD? You would not notice any speed diff. in use on either of those,....in boot times yes, but in word or surfing, not.
You can push it likely a few more years, for mere surfing and word processing,...many many years.   Up TO the point that any major fixes become unrealistic relative to getting a new(ER) machine.
Concerned with a boot clone?  yes and no.  Its an ideal immediate recovery, since you cannot boot from Time Machine, ....in case of HD crash, recovery takes seconds from boot, or 20 mins or so from removing old and installing a clone. All the prosumers and pros have at least one updated clone of their prime machines.
You can do a "fresh install" if you choose, however if your current drive is FINE, why not merely clone it and save yourself some headache?...., but that is your prerogative of course.    Ideally 2 drives, one to backup your data (you need that regardless of installing a new drive for sake of a backup/archive,...ideally 2 actually, not merely one).
You could clone internal to NEW SSD/HD , ...then offload unnecessary files to an external to free up space and clutter and run off the clone, and this would only take a couple hours......the clone itself takes approx. 40+ mins.
    CLONE Apps :
Superduper does not clone the recovery partition, but that is NOT necessary if you keep the original HD as a “backup clone”. Most don’t bother with the recovery partition in a clone, however that is your prerogative.

  • [SOLVED] Archlinux crashed - how to find out why?

    Hi,
just few minutes ago my archlinux crashed.
It freezed for something like 5 seconds and then restarted. It's first time in my life I see linux crashes so badly.
Are there any logs I could check to find the reason why my machine crashed? It's a fresh install because I repartitioned my HDD and installed arch two days ago. Hardware wasn't changed and previous installation was running fine for more than a year. OK, there were some minor issues but it never crashed this way.
What is different in my current installation is I'm using nouveau driver for my graphics card instead of proprietary nvidia driver.
    Running applications I remember:
    -firefox
    -thunderbird
    -rhythmbox
-rtorrent (NEW thing, I wans't using it before. But I also doubt it had any influence on what happend)

If it is that bug, the fix is in 3.17.3 which is in [core] now.
My experience is crashes like that are usually hardware instability.  Last time it happened to me it was because my RAM.  I had to underclock it to make it stable.  If the kernel update doesn't help you, you could try running a stress test like Prime95.
    http://www.mersenne.org/download/
If your hardware is unstable it will usually crash after only 5-10 minutes.  If you can run it for multiple hours that can help rule out hardware.

  • Macbook Pro 13" screen loose

So I was just wondering if there is a simple way to fix the loose wobbly hinge without having to bring it in to Apple. I don't believe I have insurance or apple care. If there isn't a way to fix it by myself, anyone know how much it would cost to get it fixed?

Well, it all depends on what year/model your MacBook Pro is.  I have a mid 2010 Macbook pro and this guide is extremely useful.
    Goodluck!

  • P50-BST2N01 Radius Screen Issue

A few days ago I noticed a few horizontal lines scroll accross the screen when I'd open it, but as soon as I removed my hand or started working, they'd go away.  Today, I removed Norton AV and loaded Trend and also noticed a couple of windows updates, that I installed.  I rebooted the computer and all seemed ok.  In fact I worked off and on over the next few hours with no issues.  Then about 2hrs ago I opened the screen and it began flickering wide lines of bright colors (almost rainbow colors) then I moved the computer and the bright colors went away and white horizontal lines (resembled a snowy TV screen almost) appeared.  I've since noticed that if I hold it in various positions, including with my hand supporting the screen causes it to switch from snowy lines to colored lines, etc.
I've called tech support and found them not very helpful.  They did create a case number and told me to send pics to an email, which I did.  I'm told 48hrs to review then they'll get back to me if they determine I didn't cause the issue by dropping or applying too much pressure to the screen.  To be honest, this upsets me, because 1st how can they determine that by pictures and 2nd, It's never been dropped and absolutely no marks on this thing anywhere and if I can't open or close and carry it around, what's the purpose of being a laptop with a hinged lid?
I've also noticed a few times, the screen seems to blank out totally.  I'm currently in process of system restore to earlier today just to rule out the AV change as well as the win updates. As of right now the computer just booted down from the restore and it doens't appear to be coming back online.  I've hit the power button several times now and the keyboard lights up, but no screen!
Any suggestions or ideas?  I was told by the sales rep I could return within about 30days if not satisfied and I'm right in that window, but of course I can't talk with them or a manager....

  • Scanner Ops and Recommendations

I checked first "Printing and Faxing" and didn't see anything like my query, so this might not be the best area. But here goes...
I've never ownded a scanner and was wondering ....
What happens when one scans a document? What comes up on the desktop? What app opens? Do I need a certain app? I don't have Adobe or anything (that I know of).
What happens when one scans a photo? I imagine iPhoto opens ..?...
I would also greatly appreciate any suggestions on scanners. My needs would be elementary.
FYI, I searched Discussions for 'scanners' and saw several post s about non-compatibility after upgrading to 10.4 etc and I'm savy enough to search manufacturers' Web sites for drivers, etc.
    Thanks for any ideas!

    G4 500   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   700mhz upgrade; 768MB; Geforce FX5200; Acard 6280; NEC 3540A

I've used both Epson and HP scanners, and hands down, the Epson wins. It's not the hardware, but the software - you need to make sure that the scanner manufacturer gives more than just lipservice to supporting the Mac OS. My beef with HP is that they don't update the drivers as the Mac OS is updated. I needed a sheetfeeding scanner, and HP seemed to be the best choice, but the driver software was written for 10.1 and not updated until well after 10.3.7 was released. Regardless, the original driver software was highly unstable - crashing if you pressed the OK button too soon after you loaded the scanner. The updated software was equally unstable, and moreover, redefined the term "bloatware" - you couldn't just load the scanner and press a button - you needed to go through all sorts of wizards and choices via a moronware desktop program. The TWAIN drivers catastropically crashed in Photoshop, required a hard restart. As far as the sheetfeed results - if I scanned as a low-res PDF - each page was 500 mb in size, and couldn't be reduced or rescaled. I suppose, if I ever installed Paralells or Bootcamp, I might do better with the PC version of the software.
But anyway - you really weren't looking for a diatribe against HP, now were you?
If your scanning needs are modest and/or casual - don't pay more than $200 for a scanner, and USB 2.0 is fine. I currently use an Epson 4490 Photo Perfection Series. It has a hinged lid to accomodate books, and the software is very easy to use. You can either work from the TWAIN plugin in Photoshop or use the Epson Scan utility and set it to save in the folder of your choice.
    Hope this helps,
    Lita

It's a very common problem, Lenovo replaces them under warranty, but otherwise you'd need to buy and replace the hinges. They aren't expensive (about $15usd), but they aren't fun to install. When you install, be very careful when dissembling the Lid assembly, the bezel is glued on with double sided tape and also has clips, it's very easy to break the clips, and the screen is extremely easy to crack too. The right hinge is much easier then the left. Many people find that replacing only one does the job of making it feel tight again.

  • T61 Hinge failure

The right hinge on my 2 year old T61 split in 2 pieces. The metal just failed/cracked. I didn't drop it
or  force it. In fact I was slowly closing the lid  when I noticed it was moving oddly in the wrong direction.
This should not be a warranty issue. It is a failure of  the metal/ this laptop should have been recalled.
The lack of quality in th actual metal they are using in China seems to be the problem. My old t41 from IBM
has the same hinge only it still works from 6 years ago.
I Google this problem with hinge issues on this T61 and it is a well documented recurring failure with these
notebooks. I called Lenova, they were not helpful.  All I wanted was to talk to a Person who could point out
the part#s needed to repair this.

    lenovasuks, welcome to the forum,
sorry to hear about yout hinge, that's not good news
After having looked up the part number for the correct hinges for your system, posted by zoltanthegypsy, you will be able to order the part from the Maintainance Parts site should you not wish to use e-bay or other possible sources.
For your general information; I've been retailing ThinkPads for over 10 years in Germany, I've seen one case of a broken hinge on a T6 model, three on T4 models. I can count on two hands the number of mainboards I've seen swapped out on T6 models, I'd need two football teams at least to count the number of T4 mainboards swaps.
No I'm not a Lenovo employee.
