T61 working on external display only

Hello,
I'm new to the community but it seems my problem is not. I have found some answers in others' posts but not quite what I'm looking for.
I have a t61 from 2008 type 7664 R6G with a non-working LCD. I bought it with this problem hoping to swap over some components from a non-working model that I have already.
The screen was very dark so I proceeded to swap over the inverter, then the LCD panel, then the whole assembly with the screen cable and all. I know these components are in good working order as the laptop from which they come has a diferent problem (not screen related).
Each time I changed a component I tried switching on my t61 to see if I solved the problem. I didn't!
My t61 will only work with an external screen.
I've made sure that the Config options in the BIOS are correctly set to boot to the Thinkpad screen and the brightness is set to max without success.
Please note that the OS has been upgraded from Vista basic to 7, I'm not sure if this may have an effect.
Can someone please help? I'm at a loss what to do next!
Thanks.

If it doesn't start every time from the external drive after setting it with Startup Disk, then you have a defective system on your external drive. If it's not a major problem you may be able to fix it by doing the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Remember that if you shut off the computer you need to be sure the Firewire drive's power is turned on before you turn on the computer (unless the drive gets power from the Firewire port.)

  • External Display only with VGA Adapter working

Hello, I'm german so sorry for my bad english
After updating to Leopard 10.5.2 and installation of the Leopard Graphic Update, my external Display isn't working with DVI anymore. If I plug it in, my desktop flashes and I also get the monitor information tab of my external Display (Name and Settings correct). But the Screen stays black as in power saving mode. If I use the DVI -> VGA Adapter, everything works fine...
Could that Problem be realted to the new Updates?
I've also checked every hint of that Forum (PRAM reset, deleting Preference Files, trying to boot with closed MBP, ...), nothing worked for me. The Problem also occurs in Bootcamp! The external Display is recognized fine, but will not display any image, only if I use the Adapter.

According to Apple support, it is "expected behaviour" under Lion for the MBP's internal display to reactivate upon opening the lid, even if you want to use only your external display. A new version of the clamshell mode-related knowledgebase article (replacing HT3131) is due shortly confirming this.
    This is despite:
    - the obvious temperature-related benefits that were achievable (under Snow Leopard) by opening your MBP lid whilst continuing to output solely to a 27" cinema display
    - the waste of energy and inefficient use of graphics processing power in needlessly running two active screens (ie if running your MBP in clamshell mode would otherwise make it too hot and/or noisy)
    - the negative longer-term impact on the battery and other components from running the MBP hotter than it needs to be.
If you would like to have the previous behaviour restored, please consider lobbying Apple to change how Lion handles clamshell mode. Options available to Apple include changing Lion's expected behaviour or adding a user-selectable option within System Preferences.

  • External display only works with bootcamp

Ok, so I am not by any means bad with computers, in fact I am quite good with them.  I have quite a bit of experience and can usually sort just about any problems I have out myself but this is just getting really annoying.  I have a 2011 13 inch macbook pro, and a SyncMaster BX2335 monitor.  I bought a miniDP to hdmi adapter when i bought the computer, and it worked great to display on my tv, however when I connect my hdmi to dvi cable up to the mbp, so that I can use my monitor, their is no picture and the monitor sketches out a bit, displaying random error messages.  At first I thought that my hdmi to dvi cable was just to old to work with the mDP to hdmi adapter. However, for an unrelated reason I had to install windows under bootcamp today, and I noticed that the external monitor works.  For some reason the exact same setup that I am trying to use under OSX which I greatly prefer, mDP->HDMI->DVI, only works under my bootcamp partition...I can not figure out why.  The only thing that happens under osx is that the monitor is recognized, but no amount of tweaking resolutions or settings was able to get anything to display.
Oh and I have 10.6.7 installed, which was supposed to fix display issues.

Tabudrummer, just thought I'd give you a tip. I've been reading around the web and it seems like the 13" has a problem with the mDP->hdmi->DVI setup (I've got it set up the same way). Seems like OS X doesn't like it . I hope to get hold of a mDP-DVI cable in the next few days and see if it helps. Will report to you

  • External display only works with Macbook open?

I have an Acer AL2623W which works fine as an additional or main screen, but a second after you close the laptop the screen goes blank and it shows an 'input not supported' error. The Macbook stays on, it just doesn't drive the monitor alone. Re-open the Macbook and both work normally!

    Hello Siôn Dafydd,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are using an external display with your MacBook Pro and when you close the display on your MacBook Pro, the second display turns off. It sounds as though your MacBook Pro may not be connected to power while using with display closed. Please read over the attached article for information on using a second display in closed-clamshell mode.

  • Macbook pro retina quit working with external displays

Just got a new external display, and can't get it to work with my MBP. I tried it via the mini display port and also via the HDMI connection. Then I tried to use my flatscreen tv just to test things out via HDMI and now that doesn't work either, I've done that quite a bit in the past. The only thing thats changed is I updated to Yosemite. I even tried different cables.
    Thoughts?
    Txs,
    Jeff

When I unplug the cable from the mac, the monitor does display this message:
    "No Display Port Cable"
So it does seem like the display knows that its connected to a mac, just nothing shows up. Don't get anything in System Prefs > Displays either.

  • External display only with lid open?

I feel like I must be missing something really obvious, so I apologize in advance, but I'm trying to use my external display (23" cinema display) without using the MBP display yet still keeping the lid open (mainly for the isight camera).
The first time I plugged the cinema display into the MBP it worked that way, but after I put it to sleep and then woke it up, both displays are on and I can't figure out how to turn off the MBP display without closing the lid.
I see no option for it in System Preferences > Display and the Apple key+F7 only toggles between mirrored and extended desktop modes.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
    TIA!
    15.4" MacBook Pro 2.16ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Try this:
Plug in your external monitor. Once the Mac recognizes it and you see your desktop on the external display, close the MacBook's lid. Once both displays turn off and the sleep light starts to pulse, wake up your Mac by either clicking a button on an external mouse, or pushing the play button on your Apple remote. The external display should come on. When it does, you can open the MacBook lid and its display will stay off.

  • Using External Display Only - Gaming

    Hi,
I want to be able to connect my HP w2207h 22inch widescreen external LCD to m'y Macbook Pro running leopard to allow me to play games such as SPORE and The Sims 3. I have already set the external monitor as primary in os x but every time that I start the games that I want to play, the whole screen goes blank (both of them) and the external screen turns itself off. I then have to unplug it to get the picture to appear on the macbook again so I can exit. I still have no idea how to play these games on the external display with this problem.
I have been able to solve this problem in bootcamp however, with the function to turn off the macbookpro display and keep the external by itself. I really want to play these games in os x and on my external display.
Does anyone know how to do this or how to make it so that the macbookpro screen isn't used at all (i.e. the external display is the only one in use)?? Some third-party application?
    Cheers
    Tim

Timmy, that doesn't seem logical, buddy. If you use the MBP keyboard, I'm quite sure that it thinks u wanna use the MBP display as well. It would seem an inconvenience, to me, to have it open while using another display, anyway. I'm with the idea of using another keyboard & mouse. That's what I do.
I have a ? for ya. U mentioned that u know how to get the external display to be primary while using BootCamp XP. I have done that in the past with no problem. However, it quit working. If I close my MBP, the display turns off & XP will not allow me to do anything until I open the MBP & log back in. If I try to leave the MBP open off to the side & use the Cinema Display as primary XP laughs at me & will only open the game on the MBP display. In XP Settings, the option to uncheck the MBP display as primary is grayed out & there is no option to turn on mirroring for either display or set the Cinema Display as primary. How were u doing what ever u did to use your external display for gaming on BootCamp XP?

  • Use external display only - without mirroring?

I've seen some folks using a Mac mini as a media center. I have a 12" PB and I was wondering if there's some hack for convincing the PB that there's -only- the external display (let's say 1366x768 or something similar in a wide-screen LCD) so that all video appears there and I wouldn't have the PB's internal 1024x768 even seen by the Display System Prefs.
Basically I'm trying to use the PB as if it didn't have any built-in display.
    Advice and suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Barry

Well, you can use an external display and not even worry about what's on your PowerBook's screen, if you know what I mean.
Is there a reason why you want everything only shown on the external?
Again, if you have an external widescreen, you can make things appear there by choosing that as your main screen, and let your PowerBook screen be your secondary.
I just don't get, no offense, why you wouldn't want your PowerBook's LCD to function. I mean, if it was broken, then that would be a reason. And even then, your PowerBook will work with a broken screen if connected to an external where then it would definitely be forced to adhere to the resolution of the monitor.
For choosing which is your primary and which screen is your secondary when doing an extended desktop mode, go to system preferences and displays, and then there is a screen where it shows two boxes representing your two monitors. An option to drag the menu bar left or right will determine which is your main and which is your secondary. When dragging, it will "light up" with 1 or 2 on the box.

  • Aperture fullscreen not working with external display

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro, however when I am using Aperture and have my 23" display connected, it won't let me use fullscreen mode on the display even though it has the Aperture window there. The display simply become black and Aperture starts up fullscreen mode on my Macbook display instead.
Why is this? How can I get Aperture to do fullscreen on my external display?
    Thanks!

To choose what the secondary monitor will display you have to click on the button on the bottom left of the screen (with a monitor on it).
Unfortunately Aperture won't allow you to choose which is your primary or secondary display, you'll have to do it in System Preferences - Displays, then in the arrangement section drag the top bar from one to the other. That will make your external monitor primary for all the applications.

  • Macbook Pro won't work with external display?

The very first time I connected my brand new Macbook Pro to my 23" Cinema Display the laptop screen displayed mostly static, though the external monitor continued to work. The computer was sent to Apple for repair. Apple replaced the logic board. Though the nature of the problem changed following the "repair" (the Macbook's screen now goes dark instead of displaying noise) the laptop still will not drive the external monitor successfully without multiple re-starts. I've experimented with turning the sleep mode on and off as well as the screen saver. No effect. Is anyone using this set up successfully or is there some fatal design flaw in the Macbook Pro? System 1.4.8, 2 gigs RAM. Thanks.

Thanks for the input. Yes, I've driven the 23" with another Mac. I took the laptop back to the shop today. Hopefully they can resolve the issue.

  • Internal display stops working after External display connected.

For an unknown reason, starting today, my new MBP will only allow one display out, and "Detect Displays" does nothing to help the problem. Any thoughts on what could be causing the issue? A restart doesn't fix it.

    Hi btr94,
As a first step, I would suggest first resetting the [Parameter RAM|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html] and if that does not work then [resetting the SMC|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US] on your MacBook Pro.
Let us know if this does not help.
    Best of luck.

  • Imac-external Display only possible?

Hi, is there any way to either use the Imac display or an external monitor/ beamer with a current Imac?
I would like to use the internal display if I use the Imac for music etc but would like to play games via a beamer. I would like to have the graphics card running only the beamer, like a macbook would do in clamshell mode. Is there any way to do this? Maybe it is already build in, but I do not know

  • Using an external display only

Heres my setup: An iMac with an HDMI cable to another room into a 1080p TV. Mirroring mode would be ideal but it won't run my TV at its native resolution or aspect ratio. So my only choice is extended mode, the problem with it is windows open where they last were usually so they pop up on the wrong display.
My current work around is to enable spaces (even though I don't use them) in a hot corner which shows you what windows are on the other monitor so you can drag them to the right monitor. Also I arrange the displays corner to corner so I don't lose the cursor as easily. What I would like is:
To force 1080p 16:9 while mirroring
Or have a 'gather windows to extended display' button on the dock
Or any other solution you can think of
What I'm doing isn't that unusual, I'm surprised theres no option for it.
    Thanks

You need to define the TV as the primary display so that when it's available, the dock and the apps will display there. When it's not available they display on the iMac. Here's how:
In System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab > drag the white bar at the top of the primary display over to the secondary.

The reason ubuntu showed only 1 master is because it uses the pulseaudio output plugin. Uninstalling or disabling pulseaudio makes alsamixer behave as normal. However, you can simply achieve the same effect by telling alsamixer to use your card specifically, which is usually card 0. ie
    alsamixer -c 0
This will work when pulseaudio is installed, and may have worked in your case. If anyone else has the same problem and doesn' want to move to oss4 yet, try that. If it works, add 'alsamixer' as an alias to that in ~/.bashrc so you dont need to remember the -c 0 part.
