T61P Dual Boot options

If I have 2 disk drives, one with Win XP, the other with Win Vista,  Can I boot from either drive without issue?  One drive will be in the permanant slot while the other drive will be in ultra bay adaptor.  Has anyone done this and are there any special tweeks needed to switch from one operating system to the other if done in this way?

Hello,
I have done this before with a similar configuration (Microsoft Windows Vista on the internal hard disk drive, Windows XP on the hard disk drive in the tray).  The hard disk drive with Windows XP is from a different ThinkPad.  The only thing I have to do is press the F12 key at boot and then select which hard disk drive I wish to boot from, otherwise it defaults to the internal hard disk drive for my configuration.

  • T61p - dual boot Vista and Linux

Recently I purchased the T61p with Windows Vistra Ultimate pre-installed. It all works well, apart from Vista being slow of course...
I understand that Lenovo have certified Novell's SuSE Linux for the T61p, and I am considering making the laptop Dual boot - Vista/Linux.
Does anybody have experience with this? (1) how do I get the certified Linux and (2) any tips on making this work?
Thanks in advance for yr replies

I'm dual-booting XP Pro and Vista Business x64 on a T61, and they both work fine. I also left a partition available to install Linux at some time in the future.
I built a test box (not a ThinkPad) at work that runs Windows XP Pro, XP Pro x64, Windows 2003 x64 Server, Vista Business, and Fedora Linux, and they all work.
The key is always install in this order - 95>98>2000>XP>Server>Vista>Linux.
If you partition the drive and install Linux I don't see any problems.

  • R40 dual boot options

I have an R40 2897-54U. It has been a multiboot machine with WinXP, Knoppix and Debian Sarge installed. I decided to load Debian Lenny and have wiped the contents of the hard drive to start fresh. (I didn't delete the hidden partition however, since I didn't change the BIOS setting.) I was going to install just Lenny, but then remembered that a couple times a year I have used XP to play an encrypted DVD legally here in the USA, so I'm considering the following options: 1. Reinstall XP from the compressed image in the hidden partition. (Are the appropriate drivers there, too, or will I have to download them?). Then install Lenny also. 2. Reinstall from a set of recovery CDs that I ordered from IBM years ago, but I now notice that I was given CDs for type 2681, 2682 and 2683 rather than 2897. Will these work? Then install Lenny. 3. Install Ubuntu or Freespire rather than XP to play DVDs and purchase the codecs from Linspire/Freespire store or Canonical, running a very basic system to save space. Then also install Lenny for everything else. 4. Do not install any other OS, but rather install Debian Lenny and purchase the codecs from the Canonical store and try to make them work with Lenny. Will this work? I'm leaning toward option 4. If I were confident that it would work, then I'd wipe out the hidden partiton and gain some hard drive space. Any other options that I should consider to deal with this specific issue: using Lenny but having legal encrypted DVD play? I live in the USA and want to be within the letter of the law concerning the DVD codec issues. Any input is appreciated. What do you think will work best?

  • Dual boot WIndows 8.1 and Windows 7 (32 bits) from separated disks gives error 0XC0000359

    Hi all,
I have two disks, each with a (OEM) installed OS on it, a Windows 8.1 (64 bits) and Windows 7.0 (32 bits). The later came from mine old computer that unfortunately died to soon. So I have two disks and two OS in an brand new machine (with UEFI BIOS etc.).
Installing a dual boot option was a pace of cake. However booting into Windows 7.0 gives following error:
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause.
      File:\Windows\system32\winload.exe.
      Status: 0XC0000359
Info: the application or operating system could't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors".
There is lot discussions about installing two OS but that is not mine problem: both are already installed.
Also there is much rumour about the UEFI BIOS and support for older systems. In mine medion computer the Security Boot option is disabled (by the OEM), so booting from a old BIOS should be possible, must isn't.
Someone advised me to run the recovery disk (of Windows 7.0) and run Bootmgr. However the system refuses to boot from CD/DVD with the recovery disk of Windows 7.0 inserted, booting from the recovery disk of Windows 8.1. goes fine.
Removing the disk with Windows 8.1 installed on it  and directly booting in Windows 7.0 fails too with the message: "Reboot and Select proper boot device or: Insert boot media in selected boot device and press key". Also in this case the system
refuses to boot from the Windows 7.0 recovery disk.
    Could you please help me?

    Hi,
To rebuilt boot loader, I suggest we can try following command when you enter Windows 8.1.
Run cmd as administrator and type following command:
BCDboot [Partition Letter with windows 7 installed]:\windows
Note: if you installed Windows 7 on Partition F, the command can be write as: BCDboot F:\windows.
Then, restart and boot into Windows 7.
    What’s going on?

  • Problem with dual boot after upgrade to Mountain lion

    Hello Every One,
I have a Macbook pro from 2009 which had dual boot option Windows 7 + Snow Leopard.
The windows 7 had 2 partitions (C; and D: an extended partition).
I upgraded the OS X to Mountain lion. after upgrade the system showed 3 options at boot time. Mac, Windows and a recovery partition.
when i boot to windows the D: drive is gone...I mean even though i can see the partition in partition software, windows 7 stopped showing D: in "My computer".
So i used testdisk utility to get the D: drive back and now when i boot to mountain Lion i am able to access both C:(BOOTCAMP) and D: drives.
but now the problem is during boot time my Mac Book pro doesn't show the windows option.
Can some suggest a means to boot into windows 7? Also what is the purpose of recovery partition that Mountain lion adds to the system? I mean is it going to hurt if i get rid of it so that i can go back to my old configuration of 3  primary partitions (1 for windows 7 ...C: bootcamp + MountainLion) + 1 extended partition for D:
    any help would be appreciated?
    Regards

  • S110 Dual boot Windows 7 and windows xp

    Hello,
I have purchased lenovo S110 with out of the box windows 7 and microsoft office starter.
I want to install windows xp as dual boot option, can moderator guide me how to achieve it.
I have researched a bit and I think I will face issues on the following:
    1. Partioning D drive - allready made d drive to about 100 GB and copied back the lenovo recovery hidden folder
    2. Windoows xp drivers for machine - I could not find windows xp drivers on support.lenovo.com wizard, however in my drive some drivers are allready copied and some of the text files explain installation for windows xp, thus I wanted to try this out.
    3. Making netbook dualboot keeping one key recovery and quickstart working, I think this is the most difficult problem as windows 7 doesnt behaves like xp does and dont know how QS will responnd after xp installation..
I would request moderators and experts to guide me on this..

  • T420 Dual Boot Trouble 7 & XP

I have a Think Pad T420 with dual boot option of Windows 7 Pro and Windows XP Pro both 32-bit. However for me to boot into Windows 7 I have to set the SATA configuration in the BIOS to AHCI Mode, but that will cause the XP to BSOD with the error of unable to detect hard drive. I change the SATA configuration to Compatibility and Windows XP can boot successfully but Windows 7 BSOD with the same error. I cannot seem to find the right driver for the AHCI chipset for Windows XP. If anyone could offer any assitance, that would be great.

It'll be the Intel Rapid Storage drivers for XP to work in AHCI mode.

  • Will upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion erase my rEFIT dual boot Windows?

    Hi All,
At the suggestion of one of the users in a different section of the forum, I am posting my question here in hopes of finding someone who might have already done this upgrade and can speak from experience.
I have a MacBook Air that is currently setup to dual-boot OSX Lion or Windows 7 with Boot Camp. The Windows 7 was a requirement in order to be able to use my laptop for work. I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion but I also don't want to erase the partitioning on the hard-drive and I want to keep my Windows 7 installation intact. If I choose to upgrade (instead of a clean install) will this delete the Windows partition and wipe out my disk or will it retain my dual-boot option as it currently is?
    Thanks for your help.

Then wait on update, and plan to (goes without saying hopefully) to have  backups of both that you can always restore. Especially as this is a work computer in essence.
Lion had trouble until 10.7.1 and the Lion 4.0 Windows Support Software itself was buggy for those that were installing Windows (or upgrade their boot camp drivers with Lion's).
Until people look at the Lion Recovery partition and whether that changed in size or something, or other changes to the partition tables.
WinClone 3 and CampTune can both help preserve your installation and Carbon Copy Cloner to make bootable backup of Lion and Lion Recovery, in addition to TimeMachine. (TimeMachine has been improved and more flexible).
And store your ML install package somewhere - given how slow it is DL'ing I'd wait days to even bother.

  • [SOLVED] How to dual boot windows on separate drive with syslinux

I'm trying to follow the directions from the arch syslinux wiki to add a windows dual boot option to my current syslinux.
I have two hard drives: sda (windows MBR) and sdc (arch linux GPT). My BIOS is set to boot sdc, and syslinux is currently installed fine to boot arch linux off of sdc. I would like to add an entry to boot windows.
I added an entry to /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg that looks like
    LABEL windows
    MENU LABEL Windows
    COM32 chain.c32
APPEND mbr:0xf00f1fd3 # my actual identifier for sda from fdisk is here
When I rebooted, I saw the new entry in the syslinux menu. When I went to arch linux, it booted fine. When I rebooted again and selected windows, it hung with a blinking underscore. The next time I rebooted, it didn't even get to the syslinux menu and just hung with a blinking underscore.
I booted from my rescue arch usb drive. In fdisk, sdc's partition table now mirrored sda's! In other words, it looked like I had windows partitions on my linux drive, and it had the same MBR identifier even though it was supposed to be GPT. I ran gdisk /dev/sdc, it detected both GPT and MBR, and I asked it to use the GPT table and wrote out the partitions, and my drive looked normal again. I ran arch-chroot, syslinux-install_update, and everything was fine the next time I booted.
Any advice on how I can set up windows dual boot with syslinux?

I am assuming that you use Bios and not UEFI (I am not that quite familiar with UEFI).
    1) You must configure the Bios to boot from the disk where syslinux is installed, having a correct mbr and with syslinux correctly installed.
    2) The disk where windows reside must be bootable by itself with a valid mbr.
It may be possible that windows try to boot from the linux disk (and of course fails), try to add the swap option to the chain command.
To check if Windows is correctly installed, try to boot it directly from the Bios.
The mbr of the syslinux disk should be gptmbr.bin:
    dd if=/usr/lib/syslinux/gptmbr.bin of=/dev/sd<letter of the linux disk> bs=440 count=1
Warning: Be very careful with what you do with dd, it is very easy to destroy all your data!

  • Can I dual boot Windows Thin PC on my Windows 7?

    Hi
I would like to try the Windows Thin PC, can I install it on my Windows 7 and dual boot, if I need it I logon to Thin PC.
    KW - CNE,MCSE,VCP5

    Hi KANE,
Windows Thin PC is a locked-down version of Windows 7. As a result, it will be able to run on any device that is capable of running Windows 7.
Since I have no Windows Thin PC to take a test. An at least advantage of using existing PCs as thin clients is that you can continue to use the hard disk for data that has been stored there.
Furthermore, You could try if the thin client OS of choice can be installed as a dual boot option.

  • Dual Boot on 2 SSD`s

I currently have Windows 8.1 installed on my boot SSD and I have a spare SSD doing nothing. If I install Windows 10 on the spare SSD, will it become the boot SSD?  And can I just unplug the Windows 10 SSD and boot from Windows
8.1 SSD or will a dual boot option be given when I boot my PC?

may just say that if you install any windows configuration under bios (legacy mode) you will get very few problems .its only when we start to use UEFI bios it goes pear shaped. when using uefi mode it changes the bios boot options to the latest installation
and that's were the problem arises it wont see the windows 8 installation as the valid boot option, I have gone into bios and re-selected my first ssd as the master boot snd windows 8.1 boots up ok but a reboot ignores my last selection and gives me no boot
mgr. my only option was to disconnect ssd2 (now formatted ) and reinstall windows 8.1 po from scratch . so that the uefi bios gets it instruction that ssd 1 is the main boot dirve .all goes as expected relly well. I am present trying to get all info about
installing in uefi mode and all about uefi from intel. it might be I am not following correct procedures ,but I will find out. so now I hve NO windows 10 and running on  all cylinders on window 8.1 pro

Here is the answer without having to join the site where the answer lies. The stuff that was removed by me were things that I felt were inappropriate for an Adobe Forum. They do not affect the ability to perform the fix:
So you installed Adobe Creative Suite  Master Collection or any of its other applications, and now  you can’t even open up any of these programs. You’re probably receiving the now  semi-infamous “Licensing for this product has  expired” pop up error.
This error  will more than likely affect the use of the following programs:
    Adobe InDesign CS4
    Adobe  Photoshop CS4 Extended
    Adobe Illustrator CS4
    Adobe Flash CS4 Professional
    Adobe  Dreamweaver CS4
    Adobe Fireworks CS4
    Adobe Contribute CS4
    Adobe After Effects CS4
    Adobe Premiere Pro CS4
    Adobe Soundbooth  CS4
    Adobe OnLocation CS4
    Adobe Encore  CS4
Don’t worry, because some guys over  at who knows where got the fix that will save you many hours of headaches. The  problem lies within the “amtlib.dll” file in each of the CS4 application  directories. However, downloading a simple fix and updating each of the files  with a newer one can solve this problem.
    Step 1:
Download this file it includes both  amtlib.dll files the second file(64bit) is only  to be added to photoshop (64bit)  folder the rest use the regular amtlib.dll file:If you download this file skip to step 3 !
    Code:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WZKC1K7Q
other  files for step 2 using the " removed by si conehead ".
Personally i like doing in manually its only like 17 files you  need to change:
    Code:
    removed by si conehead
    Step 2:
Run the (removed by si conehead)  and allow for the file to be copied  over to all the directories. This should fix all your problems.
If the above two steps didn’t work, try the  following:
    Step 3:
Search for:  “amtlib.dll” in the Adobe folder C:\Program Files\Adobe\.
    Step 4:
Replace all the “amtlib.dll” files in  each of the Adobe folders with the file in the downloaded fix.
    ONLY
do the following steps if the previous steps  didn’t work for you.
    Step 5:
Go to  C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc, open the “hosts” file there with Notepad.
    Step 6:
Add the following  lines at the end of the file:
    127.0.0.1  localhost
    127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1 practivate.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1  ereg.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1 activate.wip3.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1 wip3.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1  3dns-3.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1 3dns-2.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1 adobe-dns.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1  adobe-dns-2.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1 adobe-dns-3.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1 ereg.wip3.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1  activate-sea.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1  wwis-dubc1-vip60.adobe.com
    127.0.0.1  activate-sjc0.adobe.com
    ::1 localhost
    Step 7:
    Go to C:\Program Files\Common  Files\Adobe\Adobe PCD\cache
    and delete the file “cache.DB”
    Step 8:
Enter a new  serial number for the applications and open up any Adobe Creative Suite  program.
Now everything should be working fine.

  • How to add another operating system for Dual boot in Windows 7 boot configuration

    Hi,
I have dell laptop with excellent configuration. On which i had windows 7 Home premium on C Drive and Windows server 2008 on D Drive.
Now i upgraded my Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. But after fresh installation of Win 7 Ultimate my dual boot screen has gone and Win 7 is getting start directly.
Now i want to add my Windows server 2008 again for dual boot which is still on D Drive.
Can anyone please tell me how to add windows 2008 boot option in boot configuration to active my dual boot options.
    Thanks

    1) Using bcdedit.exe /enum
To enable the computer to also boot Windows 7 you again use bcdedit.exe with the following command which will copy the current Windows
Boot Loader details for Windows Server 2008 to Windows 7.
     bcdedit.exe /copy
    {current} /d "Microsoft Windows 7"
     bcdedit.exe will
respond with something like the following.
    The
entry was successfully copied to {................................}.
    Using
bcdedit.exe /enum to again enumerate through the current entries within the BCD store you'll see the newly added entry.
Before you can use the newly created Windows boot loader configuration, you'll need to change the partition for Windows 7 using
    the following two bcdedit.exe commands.
    bcdedit.exe /set {.................................} device partition=D:
    bcdedit.exe /set {.................................} osdevice partition=D:
If you now reboot the system you should now be able to boot into either Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7.

Please advise how to configure grub or other way to make the dual boot options enable and use windows and linux.
    Thanks in Advance.

Could you post your menu.lst file?
It's not clear which exact partition Windows 7 is on from fdisk -l, but you could try adding this to your menu.lst file:
    title Microsoft Windows 7
    root (hd0,1)
    savedefault
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
