T61p: No boot from Samsung 840 SSD?

Hi,
I just cloned my 500Gb Seagate harddrive to a new SSD, using TrueImage 2013
(SSD as main drive, Hdd in caddy).
Now the machine won't boot (just cursor blinking in upper left corner).
1. Bios "sees" the SSD
2. I've tried upgrading Bios to Middlethon's
3. I've put the SSD in another laptop (HP Presario V6500) and it started to boot right away
So I'm thinking this is a T61 problem.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Regards
Ketil

Install the drive in the main hdd bay, not the ultrabay and it should work, however it's not a good idea to clone from a HDD to an SSD as there are issues with drive alignment. Some cloning software is designed to do this, but I prefer to let windows setup the drive and do a fresh install.

  • MacPro 4,1 won't boot from Samsung 840 EVO SSD

    Hello,
I've recently replaced the SSD in my MacPro4,1 system with a Samsung 840 EVO one. Before that I had an older OWC disk that worked fine.
Did a fresh install and everything was fine until the first reboot when the system doesn't start from the SSD anymore. It stays a bit displaying the access denied icon (cycles a couple of times through the mac icon, which dissapears immediately, and the access denied one) and then it boots into Windows or Recovery (both of these are on a separate partition).
Startup manager does not show the SSD in the list. Booting in Windows or Recovery however, the SSD appears in the list of devices that I can boot from. However it does not work.
I managed to start it up by booting into Recovery first, doing a Repair Disk which shows at the end "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required." and then rebooting. This only works once, if I want to reboot again I have to do the Repair Disk bit again.
    Thanks,
    Andu

Check to see if you have the latest firmware on the Evo

  • T520 dont boot from Samsung 850 EVO

hello,I encountered problem when cloning original HDD to SSD (samsung SSD 850 EVO) on my Lenovo thinkpad T520. First I installed Samsung cloning sw, attached SSD by USB2SATA conventor and then I ran cloning wizard. After cloning operation (with success result) I changed disks and my laptop was unable to boot from SSD drive. It looks exactly like if there is not any OS instaled on it. But if I connect this SSD disk to other computer, it works normally and I can see proper partition structure on it. I thought Samsung sw did incorrect work and I tried to use hardware disk cloning device to copy original disk to SSd once again in raw form. A little longer work, but worth doing in such case. Unfortunately, the result is the same. Laptop refuses to start OS from SSd and is trying to boot from NET instead. After then I tried to clone original disk to spare hybrid SSHD disk and both methods were successful - ie. laptop boots happily from SSHD but it keeps refusing to boot from Samsung SSD 850 EVO. any ideas what to do next? BIOS setting tweak perhaps?thanks in advance

    Hi
JirkaT, did you clone entire (!) drive, not partition-by-partition?
I performed the loning process multiple times w/o issues using free version of Acronis True Image Home application. I hope you'e using the same app from Samsung (it has another name I don't remember).
I installed the new target drive into the external USB-SATA box and used cloning application on the "old" source drive installed.

  • Can I boot from an external ssd via thunderbolt?

My MBP is super fast with an SSD second drive.
in my Imac, can I get that same speed if I boot from an external SSD drive through thunderbolt port? or would the ssd have to be inside the imac? I guess I want to know if the thunderbolt connection is slower than if I had the SSD inside the Imac?

Don't know if the Thunderbolt port is bootable but its speed exceeds the 6Gbs negotiated speed of SATA III drives.

  • MacBookPro5,1 and Samsung 840 SSD

    Hello all,
    i have a MacBookPro5,1 and used a Intel X-25 for years.
Now i upgraded to a new Intel 520 and ran into massive compatibility issues. As i know there was a MCP79/Sandforce SF-2281 issue.
To prevent same issues with my next upgrade i want to ask if there any known issues about MacBookPro5,1 and Samsung 840 SSD?
btw. the x-25 ist reported and negotiated with 3gps and works like a charm.

Your issues were probably because of the crap SandForce controllers.  Worse thing you can do is buy an SSD driven by those chipsets.  The 840 Pros are nice but the 840 should be fine as well.  Just be aware that the write speed isn't as fast on those.

  • My MBP won't boot from my Expresscard SSD after I took it out during sleep!

Before this happened I booted my Macbook Pro from an Expresscard SSD. Oddly enough you can take it out while the computer is sleeping. This time though I took it out and inserted it in another computer to transfer files. I put it back in and woke the computer, and I started getting weird messages (ex. Evernote didn't work because it couldn't read its database,) and other things. Now it simply hangs on the Apple logo during startup.
Does anyone that knows what exactly happens to a drive during sleep, and while being read by another computer? What I can do to avoid reinstalling OSX on the drive?

+Oddly enough you can take it out while the computer is sleeping.+
What makes you think that? From your description, it's obvious that you corrupted the contents of the drive. You can try "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility, but most likely you'll have to reinstall. I wouldn't trust any of the data on it now.

  • Why won't my 2011 MBP boot from my new SSD?

I had MicroCenter install the drive without issue using a OWC DataDoubler in the optical bay.  I know the newer MBPs have a 6GBPS controller for the optical bay but my SSD--a 128GB Kingston V100+ (SNVP325S2128GB)--is 3 GBPS so it wouldn't make a difference.  Besides, I wanted to keep the SMS for my 750GB WD HD.
The SSD is readable and writeable in Snow Leopard (10.6.7), booted from my standard HD.  The only way I could install OS X on it was via Target Disk Mode using my wife's 2008 MBP, which completed without error.
I have tried holding the Option key on startup and selecting the SSD, as well as booting into the standard HD installation and setting the SSD as the Startup Disk in System Preferences.  Neither works.
The SSD was formatted with one Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID partition.
I have tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM to no avail.
    Any ideas?

Fair enough.  I'll give that a try as a last resort.
I used my wife's MacBook Pro, Target Disk Mode and a Firewire 800 cable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro as I don't have an internal optical drive any more--just the standard HD and the SSD.
I did use the retail disc, and I'm wondering if the issue might be that since my machine is fairly new, I might have had to use the stock install disk--which I seem to have lost.  I have the Applications DVD, but not the OS disc.
To that end, do you know of a way to get a replacement disc?  I bought my machine at the store, I wonder if they'd be willing to copy one for me...

  • I can't boot from my new SSD...

    Hello,
I have a Corsair Force GT. I copied my actual hard drive on the SSD with an external cable and Carbon Copy Cloner.
I restarted the macbook (pro mid-2012) and boot by pressing the option key and it worked !
So I installed it inside my macbook using the optical bay. And now, when I try to boot from the SSD it doesn't work... But when I boot from the original hard drive, I can use the SSD as a second hard drive.
(in system preferences I can't select the SSD as default boot disk. I only see the original hard drive)
Could someone help me, please ?

  • Macbook Pro won't boot from DVD with SSD

    Here's the timeline of events.
Had a running MBP 17 Early 2011 Thunderbolt with OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD 115GB drive.
Installed Windows 7 via bootcamp. I have done this multiple times before and every time I need to format the bootcamp partition before installing. I think this time I actually deleted the partition and then selected the freespace to install. This worked fine for the most part but I wasn't able to boot the boot camp partition using vmware fusion.
I gave up and used the boot camp assistant to revert back to one mac partition. I was getting some odd behavior so I rebooted the machine. It then came up with a message saying no bootable partiton. This made me think (and still does) that the windows install using the free space versus the boot camp partition caused the windows MBR boot loader to get installed incorrectly and mucked up the OS X installation. Ok, fine, I can just reinstall.
I can't seem to boot from the original MBP installation DVD. I hold down c on boot but I never get past the all grey screen. I hear the DVD drive spin up but it eventually stops. I put the original HD back in it and everything works fine but when I put the SSD in, I can't boot from the DVD drive.
I have already set up an RMA with OWC to send back the drive but considering the order of events, I feel as though it isn't a hardware issue but can't seem to figure out how to fix it. I can always send it back in but figured I would check this community forum and see if anyone could offer some guideance/assistence before doing so.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Haha yeah, I posted right before. The thing I'm wondering now: Does this mean that a Mac that came with Lion cannot be downgraded to Snow Leopard? Well, I'll save it for another question if I ever cross that bridge.
    Limnos wrote:
Just so we know, this is the original OS disc that came with this computer?  Even if you're trying to use a retail installer disc I am not sure those came out the the sufficient sub-version required to boot the computer (I think it needs at least 10.5.7 but don't have the specifics of your model).
    Edit: I guess I'm a slow typist.

  • Early 2008 mac pro won't boot from hdd when ssd is installed

I have Mountain Lion 10.8.3 installed on my 1TB HDD in my early 2008 mac pro.  That is the only OS install on my mac.  I have an OWC SSD formatted but left as an empty drive that I am trying to use but when it's installed my mac hangs on the blank gray screen.
My mac cold boots fine and runs fine when the SSD is *not* installed.  When I shut down and put the SSD into a drive bay the mac does seem to boot ok the first time, but when the computer is off for a while it will not boot.  It just hangs on the blank gray screen (no apple logo).    As soon as I pull out the SSD, the computer boots fine and runs fine again.  I am not trying to boot off the SSD, I am booting off the HDD.  The correct drive (1tb hdd) is selected in startup disk.
OWC has been helping me and I have tested 3 SSD's.  So it does not appear to be a problem with their drive.
The mac will boot into safe mode with the SSD installed.  It will boot if I choose the boot drive with the option key at startup.
    Mountain Lion was clean installed.
Could it be some sort of library pref or cache issue?
Any recommendations on what to try?

A HT does not find a lot of errors.
It doesn't look for bad sectors or directory or file problems.
Clone your SSD now that you have a clean OS and has the Apple updates on it. Before you make changes.
Install TRIM Enabler 2.2+ on it and any boot volume, to enable TRIM and so that Disk Utility's Repair Disk will trim cells. Mountain Lion Recovery won't  which is a shame, so...
Clone and keep bootable backup clone of your system to use for maintenance.
A really bad directory on a system drive will cause interference from booting.
SSDs really need extra care, and even with TRIM, to be repaired from time to time and couple times a year, to do an erase and restore from a current image.
Of course Mac OS system even iwth apps is small and doesn't need to have any data or media and fits on 120GB usually just fine and still have a good enough amount free so TRIM and Garbage Collection can work properly and not get low on free pages. But 20GB free should be the minimum free, and better to have more, at least whatever total amount is written out in a month.

  • Panic (cpu 0 caller 0xffffff800ec59301) - BOOT from External SSD Samsung

Since few days I'm experimenting the boot of my iMac 27 i7 from external 500GB Samsung SSD series 840.
First test with SSD installed on the 2,5"  Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt without external power suffered by some frezing probably due to low current from TB.
Then I put the SSD in a 3,5" eSata enclosure with its own power supply and connect it to TB trough Sonnet Express Card Pro adapter and Sonnet eSata card.
Happy with the speed of boot and of the read and write to the SSD but expereincing some problems.
Few times the iMac does not boot . it remains on the gray screen with the rotating weel.
Once instead of the Apple in the middle of the gray screen I had in Gray something like the noparking signe (circle with a diagonal diameter line) and no boot.
Last time this panic printout, and no boot.
then the iMac could be restart without any problem.
Checked and repaired the SSD: no problem.
I cannot understand what is going on.  I connect these with the boot from the external SSD and the complicated chain TB-SonnetAdapter-Card-eSata..
Or there is something more ?
Am I running any risk ?
I still have all my OS system and data on my internal HDD (which I keep every day in sync with the external SSD): this toghetehr with backups and TM should limit my risk.

    Thanks Topher Kessler.
It was the enclosure (a Maxxtro 3,5" which negotiated only at 1,5 Gigabit).
I used for some time a Wiebetech 2,5" with 2 FW800 and the eSata (which negotiated 3 Gigabit) and now since yesterday the SSD works in a Value series 2.5" PATA/SATA HDD to eSATA/USB2.0 (from Great Britain eBay).
With both the 2.5" enclosures the system is stable.
The strange about the Value series is that the specs are for SATA II and transfer rates to 3 Gigabits while my system reports 6 Gigabit.

  • Mountain Lion 10.8.4 with ssd samsung 840 pro is very slow

    Hello to all,
My name is Danilo and I'm a guy in Rome.
I'm sorry for my bad English.
I bought a Samsung 840 ssd hard drive on which I installed Pro Mountan Lion and I have version 10.8.4
When I turn on MacBokk Pro, the boot time is 20 seconds. When I turn off the MacBook Pro, the time is almost 15 seconds.
I have read on the internet that the timing must be precisely half.
I have enabled trim with the Chameleon SSd Optimizer application.
    Do you have any suggestions?
    I installed CCleaner ... it's okay?
Some friends told me to try Onyx ... what do you think?
    Thanks a lot,
    Danilo.

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Chann|GPU D|I/O' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error
the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.
If you get output like any of this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info Start **
    kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info End **
    kernel[0] <Debug>: NVDA(Private): Channel timeout!
    kernel[0] <Debug>: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel timeout!
there's a fault in the graphics processor or logic board. The two kinds of output are not mutually exclusive, but if you get both, a logic-board fault is likely.

  • Cannot boot from external SSD ...

    Hello,
I have just made a fresh install of Mavericks on a brand new Samsung 840 EVO SSD (I initially erased the drive and formatted it to Mac OS Extended Journaled, then created a USB installation drive and performed the installation on the SSD …). It all went well, the computer restarted during this 30 min or so process … However, the problem is when I try to boot in the Samsung SSD at startup having the ALT key pressed, I can only see the 10.8.5 and its recovery partition … Any ideas as to why it doesn't show up the SSD which is connected via USB 3.0 to my laptop ?
Also, even if I go in Mountaion Lion at the Start-up disk option and select the Samsung SSD with 10.9 it still boots into ML … Has anyone encountered this before ?
    Thank you.
    *non-Retina Macbook Pro 15 inch, mid-2012

    Hi Ralph,
thanks a lot for the helpful information! But the problem still persists, and I don't know what's wrong about the installation. I again checked the case and device are fully compatible with Windows 8 on USB 3 and the current boot camp drivers are installed - so everything should work perfectly fine as Windows 8 does natively support booting from external USB-3-devices.
I personally still assume it's rather a driver related problem as the external SSD doesn't even show up whilst booting into the boot menu with "Alt" pressed - I can only choose to boot from the external SSD within the "start volume" menu in OSX (which then doesn't work out when rebooting, unfortunately). I mean, if there was a chance to boot from the external SSD with the configuration I got right now, but OSX/the iMac just "doesn't know" it shall boot from the external partition and therefore rather chooses the internal boot camp partition, the SSD would at least show up in the boot menu when pressing "Alt" on start-up, or do I go completely wrong? I even tried to rename the internal bootcamp partition (which did not work out) or disable it in order to prevent OSX/the iMac to boot from the internal bootcamp partition, but it didn't help: After rebooting it again chose the internal boot camp partition to start from.
Might the deletion of the internal partition be worth a try? Meaning is there a realistic chance that the issue might be caused by that? I would give it a try although I really don't wanna loose the internal boot camp partition for no good reason (btw: would it be possible to clone an image back from the external SSD to the internal HDD then?). Or do you maybe have any other idea what driver could miss resp. could be wrong about the installation so the boot process from the external SSD fails...?
Again MANY MANY THANKS in advance for your further assistance, everybody!!

  • Re: Satellite C50D-A-13G - boot from HDD only, can't install Win on new SSD

I recently bought a SSD to improve performance a little, I of course want to install Windows onto this.
The problem is that while the laptop recognises that the SSD is there, it only tries to boot from it, which it can't of course because it is blank.
Says 'Checking Media [fail]' and then 'No Bootable Devices Found.'
I've gone to the boot menu and tried booting from CD and USB, neither option works and the system again tries to boot from the blank SSD.
I've set both the DVD drive and the USB as first boot devices. Again neither of them work and you guessed it, the system tries to boot from the blank device.
What am I missing? There has to be a way to get the system to boot something other than the blank SSD.

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for the link, it solved my problem perfectly.
I was trying to reinstalling Windows 8 as it happened though, from the disc I'd burned after buying it for 24.99 at launch. I wanted Windows 8 from that because I hate the extra tat that Toshiba installed. That rubbish comes over to my desktop as well because of synch.

  • Can't boot from clone on external firewire 800 drive

    Hello,
I have a 24" mid-2007 iMac 7,1 running Snow Leopard. I recently changed my set up to put a clean install of OS X 10.9.1 on a partition of an external SSD. I also moved the 10.6.8 start up system to a partition on the SSD. My internal iMac hard drive now has no system folder, only my data files. I have additional firewire drives for Time Machine, other data and media drives. Finally, I just bought a pair of 3TB drives that I partitioned into enough partitions to be able to clone both operating systems and all my data files for a rotating pair of offsite backups. All moving/cloning of drives was done with version 3.5.4 (Mavericks-compatible) of Carbon Copy Cloner.
I can boot from my external SSD (either Mavericks or Snow Leopard) fine and all external drives mount correctly in either case. After cloning all the partitions onto the backup drives, I tried to test the clones but I am not able to start up using either the Mavericks or the Snow Leopard clones when the backup external drive is connected via firewire 800. This is true whether I select the clone volumes in the Startup Disk preferences pane or hold down the option key during start up (note that the external drive with the clone partitions does not appear in the list of disk choices with the option key method). I get the "question mark in the folder" sign that the start up system is not being found.
I have changed the order in which the external drives are connected (normally the SSD is first in the chain), including trying when only the backup drive is connected directly to the iMac. I get the same result no matter what.
Curiously, the Mavericks and Snow Leopard boot clones start up via firewire 800 when the external backup drive is connected to my wife's 2009 13" Macbook Pro, indicating that the clones and the enclosure (an OWC Mercury Elite Pro quad interface, newer version with USB3) both support booting. Furthermore, if I connect the backup drive to my iMac using USB, the boot clones both work to start up the iMac.
This all points to an issue with the firewire bus failing to recognize the boot clones somehow during my iMac's start up process. I am rather puzzled about how to fix this.
I can get by booting via USB in an emergency but because my system is old, this is of course USB2 so its slow. If I had to use the clones to recover I'd rather be able to operate and restore at FW800 speeds.
If anyone has any ideas what might be going on, I'd appreciate hearing them.
    Thanks in advance.
    Greg
