T61p rated FAN LIFE?

Hi,
Anyone know the rated fan life for the fan on a T61p? could u post the link or something? and what speed is it safe to leave the fan running on constantly using tpfan control?
thanks!
Carthik

hello!
here or here are some more suggestions about the rpm.

  • T61p back to life

I just wanted to share my experience with my dead T61p. After almost 6 years it suffered the Nvidia failure. It had been trouble free up until that point and I didn't want to give up on it especially since I had a T9300. After researching I PM 'd TuuS who found a replacement board. He was great to deal with and I'm now back up and running. So, for anyone else researching this problem the first thing you should do is speak with TuuS. Thanks TuuS!!!
I guess things happen for a reason because as a result of this I found a pretty much never used W520 for a great price. I now have 2 good ThinkPads that should, hopefully, last me for some time.

Can I ask a question here, was the NVidia GPU problem on both the 140 and the 570 variant? thanks in advance for an answer.
Paul, the nvs140m and fx570m were both effected but the nvs140m seems to have a lower rate of failure. Laptops manufactured in August 2008 are not effected.

  • Replace Case Fan

I'm thinking of replacing, if not just cleaning, the default case fan in my Power Mac G4 (Sawtooth). What's the rated fan speed of the factory fan, or at least the airflow?
    Message was edited by: Thinking_Different

    This is how I proceed:
    1) Take out your original case fan and copy all the info off the label.
1A) lift one side of the label and put some WD-40 on the end of the shaft, then tape the label back on.
    2) Google the original maker's part number \[the Sunon or whatever part number, not the Apple part number]. That should get you a specs page that show both the airflow in cfm and sound level in db.
You will probably also find the minimum order from the manufacturer is 10,000 parts.
    3) Surf to a place that sells lots of fans and compare and contrast. I start here:
    http://www.buyextras.com/120mmfans.html
look at the bearing type (for long life), the airflow, the sound level, and whether it is single-speed or adjusts the speed with a thermistor. If you find things you like, you can search other for fans with those parameters.
For talking numbers, the sound level in a typical large office is about 35 db, and the scale is logarithmic. \[That fan you linked above has great airflow, but at a whopping 45 db. That's LOUD!]
12 Volt fans have a red and a black wire for the input voltages. The yellow wire that sometimes is featured is an RPM output, which some computers can read to see how fast the fan is turning. You can safely ignore it.

  • Zen Touch battery life after 1 year -

There are periodic questions on this forum from people concerned about the battery life of non-user-replaceable batteries on players such as the Touch and the Sleek. I have had my Touch for a year, and decided to conduct a test to see how much the battery life had decreased. I did 2 tests, one using WMA 64kbs and the other using MP3 CBR 28kbs.
    Here are my results:
    WMA 64: 25.5 hrs
    MP3 28: 25 hrs.
Essentially, there has been no reduction from the rated battery life of 24 hrs. I didn't do a similar test when I first bought my Touch, so I don't know if the original battery life was even more than this, but this is impressi've either way.

For sure, and with all the players I think that use Lithium Ion batteries

That's great to here. BatteryUni'versity.com quotes about a 20% drop in life over the first year, although I guess it varies with usage. Thanks for posting this useful data!

  • Bios not reading fan speed

With my new arctic cooler copper silent 2tc install the bios doesn't read the fan speed until the system under load.
When it's under load the system seems ok but when I and just doing a bit of web surfing I'm getting BSOD's (processor.sys error) and freezing.
is this related to the fan speed not being detected can this cause problems?

when it goes wrong it's normally in the 30's and then I reboot and watch it in bios stays high 30's or early 40's

When I was running prime in heat mode the system seemed quite stable and fan was showing around 1600 - 1800 rpm

  • How do you change the fan speed (rpm)

On a mac, how do you change the fan speed to 7200 or something?

As was mentioned, installing smcFanControl will do this:
    http://81.169.182.62/~eidac/software/page5/page5.html
However, as others have indicated, you should determine what the issue is.  For starters, is your machine actually running hot?  Have you run something to let you know what the actual temperatures are?  Setting the fan at max speed will make your system noisy, will reduce the fan life, and significantly reduce your battery charge.

  • Noisy Fan on X61T

Lenovo X61T: Noisy and overheating fan.  The fan will stop buzzing when I have the computer in an upright position (that is straight up and down, standing up).  I'm sure it's just dirty, but want to know the best way to clean it.  Could it be another problem?

i thought to buy a new fan but its comes with heat sink and is a real hassle to change alone ( link ) and a new  fan+heatsink  (not a used/replacment ) costs way more then 50 $ !!! . then ive looked at all disassembly vids and fix fan vids and got an idea to do this simple.
my conclusions :  the problem is that the fan bearing has run out of oil ! so why buy a whole part instead of oiling it ? !
    first :
do not spray the fans from above over the cap as seen in quick fan oiling vids! that's probably the most superficial messy way to oil the fans.+ dust sticks to DW40 spray oils , better use sewing machine oil.
the oil needs to get to the bearings of the motor and they are accessible only from the other side .
    some pictures for reference :
    oil + needle

    to do sketch : )
    1. spray compreesed air for some dust cleanup from the back cover slits.
note: i did do it with takng the keyboard off with unskrewing 4 reds (see link ) but its not a
must if you think its not so dusty.
2 get a syringe with needle . bend it to a semi ark.
3 slide it through the back cover fan slits and try to get the niddle between fan and motor
4 push 0.5ml+ oil in. ( sewing machine oil )
5 move the computer so oil my go around their
    6. turn it on and check for noise.
7 if still noisy . repeat once more.
    8. turned it on and ..............QUIET ( i was amazed as its so so quiet now , i hope yours is too )
    BONUS :
for making the fan spin only when needed to cool according to temperatures .
install this free progarm.  then it works only a third of the time and in different speeds as needed. ( much more quiet and great for fan life span )
    GOOD LUCK
Haven't done this yet but this is a great and easier solution that taking the entire thing apart.  Thanks

  • X61T Fan Noise

    Hello,
I purchased my laptop over a year ago and just recently (~two weeks ago) its fan started making some really bad noise (like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXm6ilpAdFg).
Last week when I was still home for winter break, I bought a can of compressed air and sprayed down the fan but the noise persisted. Following that, my dad suggested spraying a little oil on the fan and letting it spin. That fix worked, but now (back at college) the sound is slowly coming back. It occassionally clicks softly (audible from normal distance but not as loud as in video) and I'm worried that it's going to start up again. I don't have the tools to open it up again and re-oil it right now so I'm really starting to worry that the sound will come back/the fan will break.
I was wondering if I should go purchase some tools to allow me to re-oil the laptop (and if so, what would be recommended? I saw some needle-thin oil applicators with clock oil on Amazon but wasn't sure if that would reach the fan) or if I should find an expert to replace the fan altogether (how much would this cost?) or if there is some way I could send this back to Lenovo to have it fixed (my warranty expired though, sadly; how much would this cost and how long would it take?).
Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance for any replies!
P.S. I notice that if I spin my laptop in such a way that it changes the plane in which the fan is spinning, I get a really audible buzz. I never noticed this before the clicking sound so I figure this is unnatural...
Edit: I guess it's also good to mention that I tried the suggested fix of pushing the wires in the fan down, which sadly did not work.

  • CPU Fan Making Tons of Noise

I just got my iMac 24" back from a repair for the LCD screen, and when I bring it home I hear the CPU fan beginning to make a ton of noise when I only have one application (Safari) open. Even after closing it and having nothing open, the fans going nuts. I have an application to tell me how fast the fans in the computer are going, and it's running at 3600 rpm, when normally it only peaks at 1700 when having around 10 applications open at once. So, I took it back to the Apple store and the next day they said they "fixed it." Apparently not, because I just went all the way back there, came all the way back home, and the fan goes right back to 3600 rpm when having nothing open.
Note: I've NEVER had the fan go above 1700 rpm before taking the computer in for an LCD panel replacement. It's Apple's fault for the fan being broken apparently, and they can't even fix it.
What do I do now? I just bought my computer in May, can I get a refund for it now? I'm not going back and forth to the Apple store every time they say they "fix" it when they really haven't done anything. I just want my money back, or a brand new computer, and I'll be happy.

Interest. I got my 24-inch spring 09 iMac back recently from a LCD & logic board replacement and my CPU is also "going insane". The CPU fan is now running at 3600 as soon as I open most any application and then it stays there. Didn't happen before the service. I'm concerned that the speed increase will reduce the fan life, but more than that the noise is killing me. I got this iMac to replace a noisy G5 iMac and until this recent turn I've loved it because it has been so silent. My CPU temps have remained steady around 35 - 40 degrees C so it's not due to higher than normal temps.
I haven't had time to call Apple about it yet. But hope to do so soon.

  • SMC Fan Control reducing fan lifetime ??

2000RPM is what your fans should be running when idling. It's the default setting.

booted, and built fine, puzzeled about 2.7Volts for memory, but i guess 3Gb sucks a bit of juice.
crashed during games like doom3, farcry, trackmania sunrise etc. even just playng video! pushing up the memory voltage to 2.8v from 2.6v seemed to help... it would just run a little longer before crashing. everything is stock speed and voltage except the ram. tried all kinds of combinations of dimms in slots, tried upping the CPU Vcore. all chipset and GFX drivers are the lastest versions (5.10 for the mainboard, and whatever the current one is for the GFX card).
totally stumped. what is going on? and if anyone says i should have checked the ram compatability chart, i shouldn't HAVE to check to see if my ram is compatable. it should  just work. and i am definatly NOT ditching £330 worth of ram over a £50 mainboard. the dimms are all from the same batch, same manufacturer, etc etc, and no trouble all with my old gigabyte board.
also checked the hardware, pulled cards, swapped gfx boards - my GF6800GT, spare GF5900U, old GF5200, and my old faithfull PCI GF2MX400. same problem.
now heres the kicker. got home from work for another evenings troubleshooting, (windows and games would blue screen saying i should check the drivers, or the hardware, gfx card) and found that the PSU had died. really annoyed now. when i go buy a new PSU, any suggestions? or shall i take this MSI board outside and shoot it?
come back gigabyte, all is forgiven.

If those figures are right, I can't see the PSU as the reason for your problems.
About the temps, though I haven't got that experience myself, some temperature monitors read very high levels, while BIOS tells it as all is idle, and very idle. I mean, it could be the messenger.
Yep, I searched the Internet, quote 1 below. Thermaltake?! Maybe they have changed the specs? It is twice as expensive but moves half the air as to the Spire Whisperrock I've got (quote 2). I would if I were you, really go for an 80 mm HSF anyway.

  • I need few answers before purchasing a Mac Pro.

    Hi.
I am already using MBP 15" Late 2011.
It's about gaming at ultra settings. or medium settings.
I played this game, World Of Warcraft on MBP and it turns about to be 80. Celius temprature though it resist till 100. Celius, I really care for my Fans when they go to 6200 RPM. I really don't want to reduce my fans life and care for it.
It's not just about gaming but also rendering on Adobe After Effects.
I am a game developer, cg and vfx artist on very good level. I do render heavy files.
So I am ready to get a Mac Pro with the configuration of
    Quad-core (standard configuration)
    One 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon W3565 processor
8MB of fully shared L3 cache per processor
Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.46GHz
Hyper-Threading technology for up to 8 virtual cores
But before I purchase a Mac Pro. I wanna know the tempreature levels of a mac pro while playing games like WoW , Deus Ex and etc.
I saw it on windows pc that tempreture goes till 65 to 70 during games and rendering. I wanna know about the Mac Pro.

They are a server grade processor.
they fans are huge and quiet.
A PC is still best suited for extreme gaming, SLI and customized.
And yes Xeon will hit 65-70*C though it is the GPU you have less control over and those as you know do get hot but it is safe to hit 80*C - the GTX 670 is actually very robust and runs cooler than older models and less watts.
HT is about threads, not really virtual cores as much as logical cores.
And MacBook Pro and any notebook is hard to cool, and they run HOTTER under Windows if you were gaming on yours.
Before you stress the system, just boost the fans ahead of time to proactive preventative and set them to say 1500 rpm which is enough, rarely if ever will it get to 2000 and the fans only run @ cool quiet 500-600 most of the time that is normal default. And processors usually in the 30's
HT can cause a core to 'jump' by 10-20*C very quickly but then drop as quickly.
I would buy the W3680 6-core 3.33 instead. You can buy the 4-core 2.8 for $1869 Apple Specialsl, $600 for 6-core. And of course then 3x8GB RAM or more (there are 16GB DIMM support but never of course do so from Apple).
    Mac Pro 2010 6-core 3.33GHz
    Refurbished 2.8 4-core $1899
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC560LL/A
    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=47917&processor=W3680&spec-codes=SLBV2
The GTX 570 or 670 are a nice DIY also for what you want to do.

  • My MacBookPro is getting REALLY, REALLY hot!

Hi. Lately, I've discovered that my mac book pro is getting really hot. Today, I'd been on it for quite a while and touched the upper left corner (the speaker area near my escape button) and it was so hot my fingers hurt!
This doesn't seem right and I'm a bit worried. Anyone have any advice?
    Thanks

smcFanControl is the way to go. You don't need to worry about the machine with factory default fan settings. The fans will rev as high as 6000rpms if needed. The max CPU temp is 105C. Of course the default settings are a balancing act regarding power use vs other concerns. You can choose to set the fans higher and baby the machine a bit more. Just know that if you run them higher on the battery you will shorten the battery life. I set the battery fan speed to 3000 and p/s fan speed to 5000 in mine. The reason being the 7200rpm HD + the SSD in the express slot generate more heat. 5000rpm for multitrack recording and mixing where I have very high HD activity and over 90% CPU usage. This would be overkill for normal usage. As far as the risk of shortening the fan life, the fan is one of the lowest cost parts in the computer (around $20).

  • MacPro Temps OK?

Have seen several discussions in the Apple Support communities  on high temps causing problems.
These Fahrenheit temps were taken at 'idle' with "Temperature Monitor" App v 4.96, on my MacPro 1,1 - Mac OS X (10.6.8), 8 MgRam,1-120G SSD,1-500G,1-Ext250G.
Am wondering if my idle temps are OK, or do I need to do some dust cleaning? Am not a gamer, video, graphics, or audio power user. Mostly Excel, Word, Web, and email.

Back in the day (1985), I couldn't deal with heat in my Mac 512 except to ensure that nobody put a book on top, which would block most of the vents (back then a friend, for whom I'd installed a video card and an external monitor on an SE/30 covered the SE/30 with a plastic bag to keep the dust out since she wasn't using the internal monitor any more).
What I've done with smcFanControl is to set up 6 different combinations of fans speeds for different usage scenarios and then periodically glance at the temperature in the menu bar. If it's going up, I'll just enable a faster fan combination. That way, if the room is cool and the Mac is loafing, I can keep the fans at a low speed, but if I'm processing a series of RAW image files using software which will assign as many images to process at once as there are cores to process them (the 2010 6 core will show 1100+% CPU usage when that's happening), I'll start with a higher fan speed set and go even higher if there's need to.
