"Tab" in terminal dims the display

Hi,
When I press "tab" in the terminal (e.g. when I want an autocomplete), my screen dims for the moment. It is extremely annoying and I cannot find anyone with a similar problem. Any help?

It sounds vaguely like you're getting a visual bell with the sound muted. Is the sound muted? Is Visual bell selected in the Advanced Terminal preferences?

Power Manager idle timers don't work correctly when set to dim the display in 15 minutes

Instead of dimming the display to 0 on AC power, Power Manager dims it to 4, which is a normal setting when on DC power. Then when the laptop is resumed by tapping a key, it "restores" the brightness to an incorrect setting of 15, and a few seconds later back to 8, which is the correct setting. I haven't noticed this problem when setting to dim the display below 15 minutes, but the restoration of screen brightness onscreen notification is displayed twice in both cases.

It seems strange that the Power Manager would be behaving this way, although speaking with some colleagues they also have encountered similar occurences- but instead describing it as if "the engine were warming up with a high idle, and then returning to a standard idle."
What I can recommend is to first, ensure that your Power Manager Software is up to date. And then try adjusting the configuration within the Power Manager. If you will, see if you encounter this with a idle display under 15 minutes.

Windows 7 "Dim the display" and brightness controls missing

Is this another driver problem? I would think the Nvidia drivers would support this new feature in Windows 7.

I suspect you need another driver (not the video card driver) since these function require control of the backlight. It seems Apple does not provide a standard driver that can be used by Windows as the display brightness can only be controlled through Apple's bootcamp drivers in the bootcamp control panel or using the keyboard shortcuts.
Even in Vista, if you go to the Windows mobility centre (Win+X)there should be a panel for display brightness. This panel is missing in bootcamp, suggesting the necessary drivers are missing. This is a shame, but I wouldn't hold my breath for Apple to ever provide these. Then again, I didn't think Apple would ever fix the touchpad drivers for Windows, but they seem to have finally done so in the Bootcamp 3.0 beta drivers, so maybe someday...
Windows 7 also supports automatic brightness changes based on an ambient light sensor, but again, no appropriate driver supplied by Apple...

Moving the lid will dim the display and even put it to sleep. any ideas?

Our G4 iBook could be reliably put to sleep (pulsing light etc) by light pressure on one area of the upper right of the screen (your right as you face it). Tekserve in NYC fixed it (under warranty) by replacing the "reed switch."
This seems to be part of the wiring that runs through the hinges to the screen. It has worked so far.

How to dim your display by waving at your MBP

Brand new MBP: I've discovered that if I hover both hands over the speakers (at the same time), the display dims and remains dimmed until I move my hands. Presumably this has something to do with the light sensor, but doesn't strike me as acceptable as it's too easy to dim the display... Anyone else?

I've been hoping Apple would invent a Theremin version of the PowerBook. It would operate on the principle of electromagnetic capacitance like the capacitive sensors on my DVI display. Simply massage the space around the MBP and you get some sort of input.

Full-screen terminal dims display

Hi,
when switching to full-screen for Terminal my external display reduces its brightness to an irritating degree. Brightness level are back to normal when the menu is displayed or other windows are on top of the terminal (for example the preferences window or the alt-tab task switcher). As soon as these windows are gone the brightness drops again.
I can't seem to find a setting for this. Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Problem solved. It turned out to be a setting of the monitor which would dim the backlight when a certain percentage of the screen is black (my terminal background is set to black). After un-setting this option the problem disappeared. (IIYAMA ProLite E2607WS, Contrast/Brightness -> ACR -> off)

First, make sure your TV is tuned to display the correct input signal. Most TVs have several inputs (multiple HDMIs, cable connections, RCA etc) so double-check that you're using the correct one - HDMI1, HDMI2 or whatever is written next to the port.
I assume that you have a mini-Displayport to HDMI adaptor? If you open displays preferences, first tick the box that says "show display preferences in menu bar" then locate the menu and click Detect Displays. See if that helps.

sounds like you broke the display when you dropped it. There's nothing we users here can do for you.
Since the iPhone warranty does not cover accidental damage, you will have to pay to have your phone repaired or replaced. You can bring it into Apple for an out of warranty exchange in the country of purchase, or you can find a 3rd party iPhone repair store in your area.

Using the Currency Symbol in the Layout tab of the Display Template

In xMII 11.5 SP3, I'm trying to format a number in a grid template with the USD ($) symbol. In looking through the 'Number format' help screen, I see I'm supposed a symbol that I can't identify in an ASCII table (though I did find it in an EBCDIC table). I can't show you the symbol - if I could I wouldn't have to post this message!
How do I use this symbol?

Thanks, Jeremy. I had previously tried $000.00 but all I got was 118.27. I just can't get the dollar sign to display which led me to the help screen and the symbol that I can't reproduce.
After your reply, I changed the display template to $#,##0.00 with no change in the result. I'm putting this in the Format column on the Layout tab of a vertical grid display template.

Doing those doesn't turn off your phone?
As stated hold down the top button only until you see the red slider to power off your phone.
If that doesn't work then take it to Apple and see what they say.

Is there a countdown timer that keeps the display from dimming?

I love the iPhone's countdown timer, but after a bit of time the screen dims and eventually shuts off. Is there an app with a countdown timer that keeps the display alive for a long duration of time?

I'm using Scott Spendolini's Download to CSV using a before header process to generate the CSV on a page branched to from a button on a previous page. The file takes about a minute to generate before the Save Dialog appears. I'd like to display a spinner graphic until the Save dialog appears whenapex_application.g_unrecoverable_error := true;
is hit on the before header proc on the called page. Any suggestions would be appreciated.>

Why does the display brightness surge and dim repeatedly?

Periodically, i.e. frequently (about 2-3 times per week), the display brightness surges - dims significantly, then surges to ~60% full brightness whether on battery or adapter power. As I write this note now, it is running with the power adapter and the brightness has been surging since I turned it on about 30 miins. ago.
The battery indicator is showing 98% charge.
Over the past month, as this has occured, I've tried several variations of the power parameters, but with no affect.

I'm replying to my own question above. A few minutes after I posted the Question, I noticed another question in the Community in regard to "systems preferences, display, brightness, etc."
I then opened my "System Preferences, Displays", and, as the brightness continued surging, unchecked the box "Automatically adjust brightness".
Voila! The surging and diminishing brightness issue STOPPED. Over the past several minutes it has not returned. Piece of cake? Time will tell.

I just upgraded to 29.0.1 on a Windows 8 PC Laptop, and the labels on all my tabs disappeared. Only the active tab displays the title.

I tried resetting Firefox and starting in safe mode and neither fixed the problem. All it shows is the icon. This is a problem, particularly when I have multiple Google docs open and have to click on each to find the one I'm looking for.

In case this is a glitch with the color scheme, e.g., black-on-black, could you hover the mouse over the tab to see whether the title is there but is not readable in the standard color scheme?
