Tab key doesn't navigate to a CheckBox in Firefox
Hello,
when I press the tab key to move to the next field, the cursor doesn't move to a checkbox. It jumps to the next "non-check-box" field. Any ideas why this happens in FireFox ? IE seems to be ok.
Thanks,
Andreas

In the expression editor dialog box my TAB key doesn't function correctly
This is bizarre behavior that seems to have started recently.
In Visual Studio 2012, an SSRS project, any expression editor dialog:
The tab key doesn't work right.
Open the expression editor and:
* I see a blinking cursor and I can type in the expression box.
* If I hit the tab key, the cursor disappears and I cannot type. I appear to lose focus in the editor but focus doesn't appear to go anywhere else in the dialog box.
* If I hit the tab key a 2nd time, the cursor is still gone and I cannot type.
* If I hit the tab key a 3rd time, I can finally type again and note that I am now
3 tabstops in. In other words it seems like the tabs were working but I lost the ability to type anything until I "tab" 3 magical times.
I can work around this by hitting tab key then grabbing the mouse and clicking where the cursor SHOULD be which returns focus to the text area.
Hopefully this image helps clarify:

Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.
According to your description, as you said that the cursor disappears and cannot type issue. It seems that the issue may be not Visual Studio the VS IDE issue.
In addition, I find a similar thread about the

Therefore, I suggest you could also try to press alt with left and right arrow keys and check if it is works fine.

Having to change from MSN.com In e-mail with MSN the tab key worked fine. When using Firefox to access my new e-mail accounts on q.com I can no longer use the tab key. Doesn't work. ZIP. Nadda. I often have to send e-mails that have columns of figures and the tab key makes it easy. Tab key doesnt work if acessing hotmail either from FireFox. Wokrs ok from MSN/hotmail. This makes me think the problem is FireFox.

My Tab key doesn't work in Yahoo email!
I changed from Internet Explorer. Now, when I use my tab key, it doesn't tab over the cursor in my email message. There is a retry connect message at bottom right of my screen. Any resolution for this problem?
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I installed tabinta and it does not seem to allow me to insert tabs into the message composition area of a new Yahoo! Mail message. No tabinta entry appears in the context menu while on http://us.mg201.mail.yahoo.com/dc/launch? pages. I'm using Windows 7.
I feel like I'm missing something simple here... Thanks! -
Tab key doesn't switch to new cells
My tab key will not switch to next cell on web pages or spread sheets. Did I accidental change the task of the key? When I press it in excel it activates the edit.

Tab Key Navigate from TextArea
I know I must be missing something obvious here but...
Hit the tab key in a TextField, and the focus passes to the next control. Hit the Tab key in a TextArea and it adds a tab (or four characters?) to the text.
How do I make it so hitting the Tab key in TextArea navigates to the next control?Hi. You can do it like this:
final TextField tf2 = new TextField();
TextArea ta = new TextArea();
ta.addEventFilter(KeyEvent.KEY_PRESSED, new EventHandler<KeyEvent>() {
@Override
public void handle(KeyEvent t) {
if (t.getCode() == KeyCode.TAB) {
tf2.requestFocus();
t.consume();

Tab-key use through a webpage doesn't work?

TAB key isn't available in swing applications on Linux
Hello,
I have a small Swing application, everything works fine except that TAB key isn't available within java
application. I tried several JVM (IBM and Sun JVM from 1.2.2 to 1.4.0_b92) and two Red Hat release (6.2 and 7.2), I had no success with TAB key. The same application works perfectly on Windows for example. Can this problem have something to do with a bad Xmodmap file? I tried with a standard Xmodmap file (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/etc/xmodmap.std), but TAB key was still unavailable. On non-java application, TAB key is available normally.
Any suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.Do you mean that
(1) when you are running a swing application and you press the tab key expecting focus traversal, nothing happens?
OR
(2) when you are listening for KeyEvent within your application, tab key doesn't give you KeyEvent.VK_TAB?
OR
(3) something else?
I have no Linux but would try to offer suggestions if I understood better. -
Curious question about tab key selecting?
I'm not sure how to word this query so try to bare with me.
I sometimes use the tab key to select the next file or folder instead of the arrow keys, but I've noticed that when I have a series of folders and/or files that are in numerical order, the tab key doesn't select the files and folders in the order that they are listed it selects them in a order that is similar to alphabetical order.
Such as this:
This is an example of the file names and the numerical order they're listed in:
9
28
29
30
40
300
2006
2025
A
This is the order the tab selects the same files:
2006
2025
28
29
30
300
40
9
A
If the 9 file is selected then I hit tab key to select the next file, the next files selected is A it will skip over the other files. The arrow Keys don't do this.
My question is why is this the case?
Not really a big deal but I was curious why it does that. You are correct for the use you've described - using tab in list view, also in icon view. The tab key moves in alpha-numeric sequence but the numeric is by 1st numeral, 2nd numeral, etc if two or more have the same first numeral not by total number size.
The arrow keys are essentially directional. In icon view you use L/R to move to the next item and up/down to move vertically.
This is the standard use but individual applications use these keys differently. In a table/database it's common for the tab to move from cell to cell and the arrow keys to move through the characters in a cell but even these can depend on the particular software package.
This is all part of the learning curve for computer users!

How do you navigate dialogue boxes using the tab key in Photoshop CS6 on Mac OS X Mavericks?
I know that seems really 101 and obvious, but I worked in Photoshop on a PC for many years, and using the tab key to navigate through every field/radial button/dropdown menu/etc. was never an issue. On the Mac OS X however, it only navigates through certain fields within a dialogue box. And before the guaranteed suggestion to change my Mac OS X Keyboard preferences to allow full keyboard access to "All Controls" instead of "Text Boxes and Lists Only", I have already tried this setting which did not resolve my issue.
Does/has anyone out there worked between both platforms and had this issue as well? I'm a Mac guy through and through, but I must say, this is the one thing that I think PC has a slight edge on. It's incredibly frustrating to have my keyboard workflow interrupted because I can't simply tab over to a certain field that is in a dialogue box which I'm currently working in...
Here are my details:
Photoshop CS6 (13.0.6)
Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)
Applies to all filetypes as the issue is regarding dialogue boxes and not files themselves.
No error message.
Normal use.
It works on PC, but not on Mac.
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor
8 GB of memory
719 GB of space available on my main HD
This has never worked in any version of Photoshop I have used on any version of Mac OS X, but has worked consistently on every version of Photoshop that I have used on every version of Windows I've used (up to Windows 7)
I hope this provides enough information to get the ball rolling on this. I fear that there is no answer that will resolve the issue, but before I throw in the towel, I figured it was worth trying this forum since my web searches have turned up absolutely nothing of help.
Thanks in advance for your time and help.
Best,
TimThanks for your input. Since Safe Mac's Adware Removal tool has done a very good job of cleaning out the junk and
letting me run better, I'm happy for now.
However, I appreciate your judgement and I am working on evaluating Safari vs FireFox vs Chrome. I've had some trouble using FireFox with
LastPass which works very well under Chrome. But that is only one data point. Most of my Ram troub;e os related to the number of windows
and tabs I open. I've tried comparing the three browsers for how back each reacts.
I multiply windows and tabs because as I surf the web, I discover things I want and don't want to lose them. However, I need a tool more useful
and structured than bookmarks to be able to record things of interest to make them easy to return to and find later. -
Hitting tab key skips checkboxes, buttons, etc.
This is my first Mac, so I'm still getting used to the UI, I was hoping someone cold help shed some light on this. When I use the tab key in any application to skip to the next field, it totally ignores the checkboxes and buttons. Is there some way around this, or does Mac OS just not allow you to tab to the checkboxes/buttons?
in system preferences - keyboard & mouse - Keyboard Shortcuts there's an option at the bottom for altering Tab function between 'text boxes & lists' and 'all controls' .
ctrl-F7 makes the switch w/o needing to go to sys prefs.
I think(?) option-Tab enables the 'other' option while option is held; even if set one way. -
If I do a search using the google search engine, say of a phone number like (530) 335-5414 it results in a page with about 10 to 15 listing. Here is what the page looks like
https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=%28530%29%20335-5414
I am on a mac and I need to find a keyboard command to get me reliably to select the first listing . When the caret appears next to the listing I can press the enter key to open the underlying hyperlink.
I have had success doing this with the tab key and sometimes it works almost 8 times in a row. Then I sometimes use the down arrow key and it occasionally gets me there. IS THERE A RELIABLE KEYBOARD NAVIGATION TO THE FIRST LISTING ON A GOOGLE SEARCH RESULT PAGE. I don't understand why my keyboard only works occasionally to navigate in this way . This is very important for me to do this and maybe someone out there knows how to get to select the first listing on a page by keyboard that works.
Thank you very much for youI've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.

The URL in the WOnder Bar doesn't change when I switch from one tab to next.
For instance, I'm currently on this page, but I don't see the URL. What I see in the wonder bar is the last url I typed in: mailchimp.com.
Also, sometimes I get "new Tab" and when I type the URL, the Title tag does not come up on the tab, it stays as "new tab."
SOmetimes I click on a link and FireFox page comes up blankThere have been a couple of different extension that have caused that problem. You'll need to do a little troubleshooting to determine which of your extensions is causing that.

Hi folks,
I'd like to make the ENTER key behave the same way as the TAB key in
the system I'm developing. I thought I would be able to do it by setting
the ENTER as a function key (using Window.SetAsFunctionKey), and
then after detecting an ENTER key press, request focus on the current
fieldwidget's 'NextTabField'. However, this attribute defaults to NIL unless
you override the default TAB sequence. And I don't really fancy setting
the Next and Prev TabField for every onscreen field.
Anyone done this before using a simpler method?
By the way, I don't really want to get into a long thread about whether it is
good practice to bypass Windows (TM) standards or not. We require
fast data entry, and keyboard entry is essential for that.

The application we are building will replace legacy application and had similar
requirements to accommodate the current users. We solved this problem by creating a
special frame, appropriately named as the "Terminal Frame". It is distributed as
part of the Scaffolds framework.
The Terminal frame implements ENTER instead of TAB key. As you know the tabbing
order in a terminal frame (top to bottom, left to right) is different than windows
tabbing order (left to right, top to bottom). The Terminal frame solves the tabbing
problem by constructing a "field traverse list" which includes all the fields in a
window including nested views ordered according to their X,Y co-ordinates. It is a
recursive method works on the same lines as described by Sakharov, Nickolay in
earlier mail. The method also sets the NextTabField, PrevTabField references for
each field in the traverse list.
This framework is working very well for us. In a terminal frame world, you still
have some user training issues as some of the fields (OutlineField, DropList,
ArrayField, CheckBoxe etc.) behave differently for ENTER and TAB keys. But these
are minimal compared to a complete change in style.
Hope this is helpful.
Good Luck,
Shirish

worth the work that it would take to implement.Jeanne,
Thanks for your reply (even though it doesn't help me!).
Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating we abandon the TAB key
functionality in favour of the ENTER key. I just want to ADD the ENTER
key as a navigational aid for our 'legacy' users (and we have many). If it
is done right, there should be no need to tell the user about it. Their
transition to the new product would be virtually painless.
Since I posted my original question I've realised that the cost of
implementation is actually fairly low. And this is why. I have just
discovered that the default tab order defined by Forte (left to right, top to
bottom) is essentially useless for most of the windows we will be creating.
Therefore, we will need to override it by explicitly setting the
"NextTabField" and "PrevTabField" attributes of our input fields in virtually
every window. As I am writing the framework for our new product, I will
have to implement the facility to do this in the framework itself. And if we
have our tab order defined, then adding the ENTER key functionality is
minimal extra effort (see my original post). In fact, if I implement it in my
"CoreWindow" (the root of my windows framework inheritence tree), then
no-one will ever have to deal with it again.
The TAB key is not even much of a windows data-entry standard. Many
of our customers have defined secondary systems using Microsoft
Access, and it uses the ENTER key (along with the TAB key) to move
from field to field. Will these customers not complain that they cannot
use the ENTER key to move between fields if we don't implement it?
As we do not have the resources to completely rewrite our existing
COBOL system (over 2 million lines of code) in one go. We will be rolling
out the new system module by module. This means that a lot of our users
will be switching between the new windows interface and the text-based
unix telnet sessions. When I switch back and forth between windows
editors and 'vi' on the unix host, I experience first-hand how mixed
navigational facilities can hamper productivity!
Anyway, I was just hoping there might be a little setting somewhere in
Forte to switch this on, but as no-one has pointed it out, it seems unlikely.
Thanks again for your input, lively discussion is always welcome.

Tab control doesn't highlight when tabbing
I have to navigate through my application without a mouse, using the tab key, return key, etc. As I tab through the controls I've noticed that as a control receives focus it is outlined with a black box. This doesn't seem to be true, however, for the tab control. Is there someway I can get the tab control to be highlighted when it receives focus via the tab key?
There are ways you can do it by using attribute nodes. You can monitor the tab controls attribute node to see if it is in focus, then change color, size, or display the page, etc. Here is an example.
