Tab spacing difficulty with lists

Question

When i create a list in a document and use tab to create a space between the number and the text all is well with the first line after each number but of the sentence spills over onto the next line Pages tabs it a second time and i don't want this. I want the sentence to carry on under the first word of the sentence it belongs to. In Word i would just hit delete before that first word and it would cure it, but not here... any ideas?

Pages is not Word and they behave similarly but sometimes not identically.
When you create a list, each return makes a new numbered item of that list.
If you type return, then a tab, it enters the +next indent level+ of the list.
You control the indent level with:
+Inspector > Text > List > Indent level+
or by adding buttons to your toolbar to do this:
+Menu > View > Customize Toolbar…+

However I think what you want to do is break your line without it becoming a new item in the list.
Do this with a "Soft Return", type shift-return where you want the line to break.
