Tabbed windows float in space, can they lock in place?

This seems new to me. In CS5, you could have mulitple images open in tabs, and there would be no additioanal padding around the canvas area; the image would lock in place to the upper left.
Now in tabs in CS6, the canvas floats in space. Any way to have tabs and get rid of the space/padding?

What operating system?
Usually in the standard screen mode using tabs, the image needs to be zoomed slightly bigger than the image window to be able to over scroll on windows systems.
I haven't really noticed a difference in behaviour between cs5 and cs6 in this regard on windows.
Added: I can see from your other posts that your on a mac?

  • How do I delete the search bar in a new tab window so that I can have nine tiles instead of only six?

I used to get nine tiles when I opened a new tab. All of a sudden I only get six with a search bar at the top. All attempts to delete the search bar have failed. I have tried changing the rows and columns in about:config, and I learned about using Ctrl/scroll to shrink the tiles to allow more on the screen. That is a hassle compared to what used to happen. Is there any way to get rid of the search bar, or is there any way to get the nine shrunken tiles to come up when I click on a new tab rather than have to scroll? Thanks for your help.

Thanks, the add on worked great. I even made a donation.

  • I would like to open different Safari windows in different Spaces

I would like to be able to open different Safari windows in different Spaces. They guy at the Apple store told me this was impossible, but I am 99% sure that I accidentally had it working this way before I realized what Spaces was, but now that I have set my Spaces preferences, I cannot get it to work for me.
Ideally, my husband could use one space - he only uses Safari. And I could use the other Spaces for my various applications, including Safari.
    Any suggestions appreciated!

    I do it as follows.
I don't have Safari assigned to any (or all) spaces. I don't have the little checkbox checked at the bottom of Spaces preferences ("When switching to an application...").
In a given space I click on Safari in the dock. This makes it the active application. Of course, if a window is already open in that space it will come to the front. But suppose there isn't a window open. I then ask for a new window (via the File menu, or via command-n). Voila. That window is in that space. You can do this in any space and the windows stay where you created them.
(A shortcut is simply to control-click on the Safari dock icon and select "New Window".)

  • Verify Disk results, confusing.. Can they be the cause of system lock ups?

I have been experiencing strange freezes on my Mac Pro 2008 system.
My boot disk is a 50% full 128GB SSD from Crucial and is running beautifully fast however for the past couple of weeks my system often freezes for anything from 3 seconds to 30 seconds and then the Finder restarts.
After the Finder restarts everything continues running smoothly. As if nothing ever happend, no error reports, no apps crashed, nothing.
I have verified disk permissions and verified the disk itself in Disk Utility but I am not quite sure what these results mean and if they could be the cause of these random lock ups.
    here are the results:

I would really appreciate it if someone that knows their way around this stuff could help me troubleshoot this.
As for the problem of the system locking up it does not happen in the same application consistently.
Often it happens in Firefox but it could equally often happen when working in Photoshop, browsing files in the Finder or trying to access the Spotlight search via the keyboard shortcut.
When the system locks up I get the spinning beach ball and I can still move the mouse and click and even still access CMD+TAB app switcher, switch spaces and all those things, just applications become non responsive.
If you need any more details please let me know.
    Thanks for reading,

These are innocuous errors that you may safely ignore. However the disk error is a problem. Do the following:
    Repairing the Hard Drive
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • II never use tabs at a desktop. Tabs in desktop Firefox are obstructive. Can they be eliminated, ever.

II never use tabs at a desktop. Tabs in desktop Firefox are obstructive. Can they be eliminated? ever?
There seems to be a jackboot coercion to eliminate a multi-window view in Firefox to the point where, in the current iteration, there is a permanent single space wasting tab in the header.
Like many I have many programs open, spreadsheets, text and graphic editors, sometimes 2 or more browsers.
ALL are easy to find on the task bar until they are obscured by tabs.
I followed the gravitational pull toward tabs for mobile use.
    There they can be justified.
They are counterproductive in desktop usage.
Even the developers tab-killers have been eliminated.
Do we all have to accept tabs like GMOs and fluoride?
Is there a hope for a full desktop view in Firefox?

    @Tony98
You will observe that this is a question for developers.
I am familiar with far more alternatives than you could suggest.
This question is for Firefox developers please.
For you less experienced home users with just one PC I will explain again.
There is a client base that prefers windows to tabs for business reasons, regardless of OS, and purely for ergonomics.
With several programs open, spreadsheets, graphic displays, sometimes 2 or more browsers, ALL are easy to find on the task bar until they are obscured by a browser with tabs open in one stack.
I see tabs as a current fad, useful for small screens on low res phones.
Tabs in apps on mobile devices is just fine.
There we use a finger or stylus.
On desktops, we use a mouse.
Current smartphones and tablets, have comparable resolution and utility to desktops.
They just lack power. That will change.
    Firefox is the preeminent browser.
It is a mainstay of Linux and Linux appliances.
To push it toward "tabs only" as if just for phones is a mistake.
When MS Windows 8 is used in business it is used always in desktop mode, and with a mouse, not panes.
That's why business rejected it when released.
When the mouse disappears, tabs may become useful on desktops.
For now the mouse is here to stay, and so should the windowed browser.
As much as I dislike Internet Explorer, it has a simple "no tabs" option.
    So should Firefox.

  • Spaces confusing safari windows (on multiple spaces using command-tab)

Wondering if this is happening to anyone else.
I love spaces but something is messed when using safari windows on multiple spaces. Say I have two safari windows open on two different spaces, after command-tabbing to another app when I try to command-tab back to safari it doesn't always go to my last safari window. That is to say that sometimes it goes to the other safari window, and sometimes it doesn't. It's super unpredictable.
Give it a try, open two safari windows on two different spaces and the command tab to another app and then command tab back to safari - and repeat... you'll find that it will just randomly go to the other window, and then back etc.
Can't think of anything more annoying in spaces... that's got to be a bug.
Anyways, let me know if it's happening to you.
    Jay.

same issue. i have multiple safari windows with multiple tabs on multiple spaces. let's say one space is a rails space; so it has some terminals, safaris, firefoxes, all perhaps with 2 or more tabs. command-tab does not necessarily go back to the window of the app i was just in. whether it's safari or firefox or whatever. this is horribly un-intuitive. come on apple. that's like your thing, right?

  • Why won't my tabs & windows reopen as they should, even tho I have it set for them to do so?

Why won't my tabs & windows reopen as they should, even tho I have it set for them to do so?
"Firefox can be configured to restore all windows and tabs that were open when the application is closed or terminated unexpectedly. This article describes the circumstances under which your session is restored and how you can configure it."
I have it set up, in "Tools", "Options", etc., for my windows and tabs to reopen & be restored to the webpages that they were previously at before I, for one reason or another, restarted my computer! But, after I restart my computer and the Firefox browser, it always goes to my homepage; the windows & tabs NEVER restart as they should!
It wasn't always like this. It has only been within the last few weeks that this has become a constant and consistent problem. I assume that a Firefox update somehow disabled something & that's why it isn't working properly but, whatever...
How do I fix this so that my windows & tabs reopen as they should!?

Have you checked to make sure that under>> Options >> General >> That the startup behavior is appropriately? I had the same problem after upgrading and setting my homepage. It should be set to "show my windows and tabs from last time".
Just re-read your post. sounds like you've tried this already.

  • Possible to float an app window over all Spaces?

    Hi Folks,
I'll give you a couple of examples.
    1) I use a small countdown/stopwatch app that I would like to float over everything, no matter which Space I might be in at the time.
    2) I use Entourage to remind me of appointments, events, things to do etc. It would be mighty handy if the little "Office Reminders" window would come to the front of everything I have open in whatever Space I'm in so I don't have to go hunting for it each time the reminder alert sounds.
Is making a window float over all the Spaces one of those tricky behind-the-scenes Unix command things? I know nothing about all that, but maybe it's time I learned!
    Cheers!
    Chris

    William,
Thanks for the info. I'm a bit embarrassed since all I had to do was to look more carefully at the list of possible spaces. I never did see "every space" before.
Anyway, it has indeed worked for the little timer app which now floats proudly above everything else in every space, but unfortunately it hasn't worked for the "Microsoft Office Reminders.app" which supposedly is a separate app from Entourage, and, as you can imagine, I use it all the time.
It's rather annoying, actually, as what happens is that the little reminder window opens in whatever space you're in at the time, but if you don't happen to "snooze" or "dismiss" a reminder and then you move on to another space, any new reminder gets added onto the reminder window but in the original space. Then you have to go looking for the reminder window which, if you're using a lot of different spaces, can be well buried. And unfortunately, pressing Fn-F8 or F9 doesn't help because the little reminder window then disappears! Aaarrgghh!
Oh well. I assume the problem could be fixed by Microsoft or Apple, but it's such an obscure problem that it won't be dealt with.
But thanks again, William. Very helpful.
    Regards,
    Chris

  • Can you lock a window open?

I've been having a problem that I can't seem to solve. Command-k allows me to connect to the company server quickly, at least it does the first time I use it after startup. If I close the window to the server, subsequent connections take forever.
Our IT guy fixed it once, but the problem is back and he's part-time and not around. It seems that installing a system update undid his fix.
I figured out a work-around, that is IF there's a way to lock the window open so I can't close it, then I don't have to worry about slow connection times after the initial connection.
Does anyone have a way to "lock" the window open? If the red dot could be disabled this would work.

That's what I usually try to do, but sometimes I close it before I realize that I don't want to, and then I have to wait a long time to reconnect to the server.
I'm pretty sure I've seen windows that don't have the standard "red, yellow, green" buttons in the upper left. Usually opened during an install or something. I was hoping for some hack I could apply to the window I want to stay open.
