Table of Contents & Index: Which Acrobat 9 Product?
I would like to create a document in Microsoft Word that will
have a table of contents as well as an index. When I convert this
document into a PDF format, I would like the table of contents as
well as the index to be "active", in that the user will be able to
click on a topic or index reference, and then jump automatically to
that page in the PDF document. The PDF document will be loaded on
my website.
Which Adobe Acrobat 9 product will provide this
functionality?
Thanks!
Thanks For the Post!!

Which Acrobat 9 product? Table of Contents & Index "jump" to page
I would like to create a document in Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac (version 12.1.0) that will have a table of contents as well as an index. When I convert this document into a PDF format, I would like the table of contents as well as the index to be "active", in that the user will be able to click on a topic or index reference, and then jump automatically to that page in the PDF document. Thanks!Margie,
There is not product that will do this for Microsoft word from Adobe on
a Mac. If MS Word 2008 has its own pdf capabilities, you might see if it
will do it on its own. BTW, there is only one Acrobat product on the
Mac---Acrobat Pro. There are several versions for Windows.

RoboHelp HTML, RH7
Also, the Generate Adobe PDF option is grayed out.
Thanks,
KerriHi there
In addition to what Peter advised, my own guess as to why they are disabled (grayed out) is probably because you don't have more than one defined? It would make sense that unless more than one of each was present, they would be unavailable.
Now if you *DO* have more than one of each defined, I'm at a loss to explain why they might be presented in a disabled state.
Cheers... Rick

Table of Contents Issue/Question
Hi everyone, I hope I can put my question accurately into words.
I'm working on a 450 page product catalog in Indesign CS5 for the mac. The catalog has 7 main sections, in which there are numerous smaller sections. I need to create a table of contents for these smaller sections, however, my issue is this; my table of contents is based on the product names which I've applied a paragraph style to, but, also included on the same line that the product name is, are several small icons. I used the library function to put these icons into place. I put my curser where I wanted the icons to be, went to the library, right clicked on the icon I wanted, and selected place item. I found this to be the easiest way since there were approximately 1500 products in the catalog. So, my issue is, now that I'm creating a mini-table of contents for these numerous sections, the icons are included in my table of contents, which I don't want. I can manually go in and delete each icon, but I'm thinking there has to be a faster way. I thought of possibly a grep style but can't figure out how to make that work.
Any help would be appreciated! It's going to take a while to delete each one of those. I hope I've described this accurately; please feel free to ask any questions if it's not clear.
Thanks so much!
AnnetteOh my gosh, that did it! Thank you sooooo much!
I couldn't figure out how to choose just those characters because I hadn't designated them as anchored objects; that was throwing me, but I guess Indesign saw them as such.
Thanks again, you've saved me hours of work!
Sincerely,
Annette -
I want to create a bookmarked table of contents for a 700+ page document. I figured that I would bookmark the text in the table of contents to go to the appropriate pages...
...but...
...I have also been asked if we can also include an easy way to let the user go BACK to the table of contents. In Acrobat, the only way that occurs to me is to add text to every page that says "return to tabe of contents" and bookmark every last one of them.
Does anyone have any better ideas when it comes to making a user-friendly PDF table of contents? (Including with third-party applications?)It looks like Ihave found it, thanks. THis might work. Just two dummy questions from having just tried it out seconds ago.
1. Do I have to specify a zoom level for the action? I'd rather that the zoom level remain that which the user had already selected.
2. I have specified the text to be black on a grey button, but when I save the document and re-open it, the button is grey with no visible text. How do I make the text visible?
Thanks. -
Serious problem with text variables in table of contents
I posted this in the regular InDesign forum -- seems that there's no easy solution that would work well in a production environment (only suggestion was to convert the variables to text). However, thought I'd post it here to see if anyone on the scripting forum has a suggestion that might help:
Using InDesign CS4, when there is more than one text variable in a heading that is then included in a generated table of contents, the characters in the table of contents entry are scrambled. Is there a way to avoid this problem so that the table of contents entry has the same text as in the heading?(This might also have been mentioned in your other thread:)
Text variables work great, but have one big basic flaw: the text cannot be broken. If you have a single text variable contents that's too wide for your text frame, all characters get squished together. I imagine this being even worse when you have two or more variables in a single paragraph. (Another big flaw is that you cannot include character formatting. Let's hope Adobe is working on it.)
You cannot "work around" this basic behavior with a script. The only thing you can do is convert the variables to text, which will de-variablize them (for want of a better word).
Other than using variables, you might want to use the regular Table of Contents feature (which is not "live" but needs updating after each change in the original document text), or perhaps Cross References, which can be used to pick up entire paragraphs. -
Find/Change Item Numbers and create Table of Contents
Hello! I need help to find all my item numbers and apply a paragraph style to it so I can use them to create a Table of Contents page.
Sample item numbers
#12345
#12345-5
#12345-20
#12345-ABC
#12345/N
I tried entering #^?^?^?^?^? on the Find/Change box and but this will find exactly the 5 characters after the # sign. I wonder if you can find all characters starting with # and until the last characters.
Once I find all the item numbers, how can I apply the paragraph style for only those characters after the # sign? Because I only want to show the item numbers without the # sign on the Table of contents/Index page.
By the way, I have InDesign CS2 which have no GREP function Maybe I can do this without the GREP?
I really appreciate any help. Thank you very much. You actually have two problems here. The first is to assign the paragraph style. For that you can use GREP.
Find #\d+ and leave the change field blank, but in the change formatting pick the paragraph style. Stricly speaking you only need to find #\d or even just # because a paragraph style applies to an entire paragraph, so assigning it to any character inthe paragraph will assign it to the entire paragraph.
Which is your second problem. The TOC is based on paragraph styles and will include all of the text in each paragraph (up to the character limit for a TOC entry, which I think is 256 characters). You can't make a TOC and only use some of the paragraph. For that you need to use an index, or you need to make hidden or non-pinting frames with only the exact text you want in the TOC and assign a unique style to those.
It's also possible someone has written (or could write) a script that can find text strings that match a pattern such as your numers, assign a character style to them (you could actually do that part in the paragraph style by adding a nested GREP style), then making a list of the text strings along with the page number on which they appear -- almost the same as an index except it would be based on character style, not an index marker. -
Table of Contents in PDF Export
I've generated a Table of Contents in iWork '09. When I export this to a PDF using the Best Quality, it doesn't contain a table of contents. I think this would be a very useful option, since I use iWork to create technical documents.

There are normally three ways to create a TOC (Table of Contents). Which did you try to use?
1) Bookmarks: Most applications and non-graphic only devices will interpret a list of bookmarks as a TOC if exported properly as part of the PDF file. Unfortunately, Pages does not appear to export this data as part of the file export or does so in such a way that the bookmarks are not recognized by other applications/devices including Apple's own Preview. If this is what you are trying to do, you would need to use a secondary application to re-bookmark your content. (NOTE: Don't use Preview for this as its bookmarks are also not recognized by other applications/device and only work when using Preview as the reader.)
2) Pages "Insert TOC" Option: This option should produce a a working TOC that will work on non-graphic only devices and/or applications that allow touch, stylus, cursor movement, etc to highlight/activate internal/external links. This form of active annotation has the advantage of being able to update and display page references automatically as you create the document. If this is what you tried to do and it didn't work, the most frequent problem is a failure on the part of the user to tag the text on the page you want included in the TOC with one of the "header" tags (i.e., h1 thru h6). Properly tagging your text will allow the selected text to be automatically added to your TOC along with the page number on which the text is tagged if desired. Further, tagging the text allows you to redefine the style of that tag at any time you wish and apply the change to all other text similarly tagged.
3) Manual Links: The third option is highlight selected text in your document and add it manually to your bookmark list. Then you would select the text (either on a manually created TOC page or anywhere else in your document) and link it manually to one of your bookmark entries. As you can see, this process can be much more time consuming but should work under the same conditions mentioned above regarding the auto-generated TOC. This option does not require tagging of the content nor does it prohibit it. -
Dynamic Table of Content (For specific String)
Dear Experts,
I want to table of content ( Index page).
Create index page at beginning of page or at last of the page with only three contents.
1. Record Number
2. Title
3. Page No.
For Example,
No. Title PageNo
1 Technical Specs 2
2 Technical Details 4
3 Types of Machine 7
4 Price of Machine 8
Here all Title is in different Group Header, Sub Report-Group Header, Details and Footer as a TEXT OBJECT.
So How Can I can prepare Index Page?
i hope you understand all my requirements.
Thanks & Regards,
Nishit MakadiaSheri,
This isn't possible at the moment. Pages for iPad can only handle external links. -
Why Do Preview Sidebars Now Only Open In Table of Contents View?
All of a sudden Preview's PDF Sidebars, which always used to open in “Thumbnails” view (which I prefer), only open in “Table of Contents View” (which I hate) when I open any PDF. How can I get Preview to always use the “Thumbnails” view like before without having to select it every time I open a document? There doesn't seem to be a way to set this in Preferences.
Maybe the LaunchServices plist is messed up. You might try this:
To reset all of your files to open with the original default application, you need to delete a certain file. Go to your user folder, and navigate into the Library folder then into the Preferences folder. Find the com.apple.LaunchServices.plist file, and drag it to the Trash. Alternatively, drag it to the Desktop if you think you might change your mind and want to put it back later.
Over time, you may find that the Open With menu gets cluttered with duplicates, older versions or applications you thought you deleted long ago. To get rid of these, you need to use Terminal. Open up Terminal (from Applications/Utilities) and paste the following line:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Press return and your Open With menu should have been cleaned up to only include the most current applications.

Dear colleagues at this forum,
This is my question, i have a big PDF file, 341 pages, another 500 pages, I want to make a table of content, and I read that this Program Debenu PDF Aerialist 12 as a plug-in for Adobe Acrobat does provide this solution, which allows you to quickly build a table of content, however the program is expensive at close to five hundred dollars, i wonder why has not Acrobat Professional put this service included in the program, if one can make a solution of Table of Content and Index, this would be great. Does Acrobat have this function already or do you think that I must buy this program. Yes one can make a table of contents using word program then entering it to the PDF file and linking each line of the table of contents with the relevant page, but this would take a long time, and the solution provided by Debenu sounds like good. I am looking for your advice as i do not know much in this field.
Best regards,
BacharAcrobat does not have this built in. Normally, the table of contents is prepared at the same time as the document, perhaps in Word, which will use heading styles to do it automatically. Then this is converted to PDF. It is very unusual to do this work late with a PDF, I guess this is why it is not a core Acrobat feature.

Create a an Table of content or an Index page in report in Oracle BI Publisher
I want to create an Index page for my multi page report in Oracle BI Publisher. Any help would be appreciated.
I am using MS word 2010 for creating the template (*.rtf file). Please let me know if any more details are required.
I am creating a rtf template for generating a report in oracle BI Publisher. The report displays the details for all the products used by the customer. Report contains 1 product per page. All the products have same template.
What I want is to create an Index page, which displays the product name and the page number of the report in which it is generated.
For eg. Customer Papa Johns uses 10 products. The report generated will contain below details: 1st Page -> Cover Page containing Basic details of customer.
2nd Page -> Index page containing the product names and the page numbers
3rd page: Product 1 details
4th page: Product 2 Details .
and so on.
INDEX
Product Name Page No.
Anchovies 4
Apple Topping 5
Bacon 6
Barbecue Sauce 7
Barbecue Sauce2 8
Chicken Topping 9
Dough 10
Please note that the number of product will be variable(may increase or decrease), hence there may be case when the index page takes more that 1 or 2 pages just to print the product names and their respective page numbers.

Hey
I have now tried for hours, but now I give up!
MY WISH -
Create a Table of Contents (TOC) automatically after I have combined several pdf.files into a single pdf.file.
I have already bookmarks, shown on the screen (see screenshot below) but I want those bookmark to be visualised in a separate TOC in the top of the combined files.
This new TOC (which I have inserted) shall be printable and serve as a cover page in a binder.
I have seen other cheap pdf.programs in the market (e.g. PDF Converter Professional 7.3) which are able to make the above things, easy, fast and nice.

Creating a table of contents in a PDF - which program to use?
I have created many pdf-files from multiple sources and would like to include a table of contents to each of them. Not the side-bar bookmarked table of contents but a traditional one which prints with the document (as you can easily create in Word or Pages).
As I have to create a table of contents for 60 different pdf-files, it would take ages to do this by hand (what I would do is create a empty word document with the chapters in the right pages and create a table of contents. I can then make a PDF of the table of contents and insert that page into my PDF-file, but it's a lot of work!)
I have Adobe Acrobat X, but it doesn't seem to be possible with it. Searching the internet, I found some Windows programs which might do the trick, but I only have Apple computers. Does anyone know a program which can do this on an Apple?
Thanks,
EmileCan Adobe automatically create a table of contents for a document and if
so how is that generated?
Adobe will not create table of contents for you.
