Table Of Contents - Level Formatting

InDesign CS3
Ive created a long document that catalogs all of my company's graphic options for our motorcycles.
Each page contains 2 graphics along with their respective part number and graphic name. The part number and graphic name for each graphic are set in 2 separate text boxes and setup as 2 different paragraph styles.
Im trying to create a Table Of Contents that lists, by section, the part number, graphic name and page number for every graphic. Currently my TOC looks like this:
Section
Part Number
Graphic Name5
However, I would like for it to look like this:
Section
Part Number Graphic Name5
I don't see an option to keep TOC Levels on the same line...
Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Desi

You can run on entries, but it runs on all entries. You'll just have to do a search and replace.

  • Problem with automatic table of contents Level headings

I am having trouble with the Table of contents in Adobe Indesign. When I create my automatic table of contents one of the Level headings that is supposed to appear under Chapter 1 instead appears under the Introduction heading. On the actual page where the heading paragraph styles have been defined the 2nd Level heading is as it should be underneath Chapter 1. So what I end up having to do is move them manually in the TOC. But I don’t want to have to do this and it would be great if Indesign instead did the automatic table of contents correctly.
I wonder if it has anything to with the fact that our template is set up with headings (that sit outside the body text to the left) as text boxes which we place inside the main body text box (they have anchored object settings on them so the heading sits off to the side).  Whilst the anchored text box is exactly in the right sequence, maybe indesign senses and reads the anchored text box last?
I have an example of the file and the problem that is occurring in the pdf, it can be downloaded from:
Is there a solution to this?  If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.

I've been playing with this for a while, and quite honestly I don't understand why it's doing things the way it is. It's working correctly on Page 11, which seems to me to have exactly the same structure, except for the subtitle. It also works correctly if I copy the frames from page 14 and paste into a new doc.
Things I tried that did not work: Export as .inx and move the pages to a new doc. You might try copying the text and pasting into a new doc.

  • Table of Contents Section Formatting Issues

Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening in the Table of Contents? It seems that if I have more than 10 sections in a chapter that it pushes the info to the right side of the text box.
In section 10.10 all my text (for the title) is formatted to the left, and I can't figure out why the TOC is displaying it like this... pretty annoying...
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Andrew

First off, thanks for the book K T, it's a great edition to my learning how to use iBooks Author, but it was no help.  After playing around and becoming quite frustrated I started digging around in the the TOC I've figured out how to format the TOC a cross the entire book - getting rid of the formatting issue awonacott is experiencing.  I too am (was) experiencing that TOC formatting issue.  Here's what I did to rectify it:
    1: Go into your TOC.
    2. Go into any Section heading list and double click, then change the TOC to TOC Heading 1, 2, or 3.
For some reason the default TOC gets all wonky when you try to insert a section into an already created chapter.  I was having this funny formatting happen to all sections of the iBook I'm creating, not just beyond the 10th section.
I refused to just deal with this crazy formatting, as I believe you should be able to add as many sections as you please without having to trim it down to fit within a 10 sections.
    Anyways I hope this helps.

  • Format tab leader in table of contents

I have a table of contents that uses tab leaders. There are two levels of header in the table of contents. One is bolded (major headers) and one is not (minor headers). The page numbers are not bold for any entry. For example:
    Major Header.................1
    Minor Header...........2
Apparently if you make the header text bold, the tab leader is bold too. This means that the major headers have bolded tab leaders, and the minor headers have regular tab leaders. This makes them appear uneven. I would like to use regular, unbolded leaders for all entries, but I don't know how to modify the leader formatting without affecting the header text.

You can override the heading style setting.
In the major headers, type a space at the end of the text and before the tab leader begins.
Select all of the leader and the text/nmber at the end of that line.
    Toggle Bold to Off.
If your header levels use different type sizes, the leaders will still look different. You can also use the Size control in the format bar to match the size of the leader to that of the minor header.
Not thoroughly checked. You may find this unstable in use, particularly if the content in this is edited.

  • I'm creating a book format in Pages. I want the page count to be 1 on the first page of chapter one after the title page, table of contents, etc.. How do I do that?

I'm creating a book format in Pages. I want the page count to be 1 on the first page of chapter one after the title page, table of contents, etc.. How do I do that?

    That is not the issue.
Pages/OSX does not save files with crop marks and bleeds.
It also by default saves transparency, which is involved in a lot of Pages' better features, at a rubbishy 72 dpi resolution.
It also makes it extremely difficult to maintain mono-color like black only text, has no spot color and makes color management opaque.
It really is only meant for amateur publishing and printing to your desktop printer.
A commercial printer who is willing to use and print from Pages may have better results but at the cost of considerable micro-management which defeats the point of this "cheap" solution.

  • 2 Fact Tables with a same content level

    Hi,
I have 2 fact tables F1,F2  joined to the same 4 dimensions D1,D2,D3,D4.The detail level # of elements multiplied for all the dimensions D1,D2,D3,D4 are the same for both dimension.I even set the content level for the 2 fact tables and the content filter is the same in both fact tables F1.Column1=0 in F1 fact table and F2.Column1=0 in F2 fact table. So how does OBIEE decide which fact table to select in this scenario.
I went through the below blog but could not get much information
    http://obiee-blog.info/administration-tool/what-rule-is-followed-when-several-fact-are-at-the-same-content-level/
I appreciate if anyone can guide me with the right answers.

How many records retrieving when joining F1 & F2 with dimension ? if the f1 and d1 has 200 records and f2 and d1 is retriving 100 records it chooses shortest path.

  • Pages 5.5 table of contents not showing after formatting to ePub

Im currently trying to format my pages version 5.5 document to ePub. My goal is to use the created document in iBooks. I have downloaded the ePub best practices template from the relevant apple help pages and followed the guidelines. However when opening the document as an ePub file via iBooks the table of contents is non existent. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

All the documentation I have read for created EPUB are to export XHTML, rather than DTBook. I'm not sure if it follows the same rules as EPUB for XHTML.
Assuming it does, you need to do two things: (1) Create a TOC Style (not just a Table of Contents) in the Layout menu. (2) When in the Export EPUB dialog > Contents panel, specify the TOC Style you created.
In an "normal" EPUB 2.01, that would do two things: It would create a navigational TOC shown in every EPUB reader, and it would leave the TOC you placed on your page as an internal TOC.

  • Table of Contents Deactivated in HTML Formatted Emails - How to Fix?

Problem Details: I produce a newsletter with an embedded table of contents.  In iOS7, users were able navigate via the table of contents and traverse to the corresponding articles.  This functionality has been lost upon the installation of iOS8.  My newsletter is embedded into the body of an email message.  The navigational hyperlinks that comprise the Table of Contents no longer function after upgrading from iOS 7 to iOS 8.  The issue still persists with updates to iOS8 updates since its release.  Hyperlinks continue to work, but not the navigational links in the Table of Contents (that navigate down to the respective content in the body of the email message).
Note: Apple Support has been able to recreate this problem.  This problem did not exist with iOS7.  First started with the installation of iOS8.  I have delayed the upgrade to iOS8 on one of my remaining devices and I don't have this problem with my iOS7 device.  Despite being able to recreate this problem, the solution seems hopeless.  I have tried to get the attention of Apple many times to no avail.  My newsletter is ready by thousands of people each day.  This is a problem - Apple where are you??
Note: This functionality continues to work in devices that still have iOS 7 installed, web browsers, android devices, blackberry devices, etc.  The issue is isolated solely to devices with iOS 8 installed.

    Hi Tom,
I use MSWord to create the newsletter.  I then save it as a "Web Page" (html format) and place it into an Outlook email message.  The table of contents functionality works in Outlook, web browsers, Android devices, blackberries, iOS7 devices.  However, not with iOS8.
I had a great talk yesterday with Apple support.  They again were able to see the problem on their end.  They have elevated the ticket to an engineer.  Hopefully they will figure it out.  It is kind of where I was 2 months ago on this issue with Apple (9/24/14), but somehow I have the feeling that the problem is in the right hands this time.  I will keep the board posted.  In the meantime, any ideas are welcome .
    Thank you.

  • Make table of contents links keep current zoom level, not zoom out to full page

When Indesign creates tables of contents, they automatically link to the paragraphs the links point to, so that in an interactive PDF, clicks and prods take the user to that page. Great.
What's not so great is, that the hyperlinks / cross-references / jump-links / whatever that are created behind the scenes within the table of contents appear to:
...be automatically set to reset the zoom to full page width
...not be editable in any way
Normal cross references retain the zoom level that the user has chosen, and normal hyperlinks that point to a page in the document have a range of settings about what zoom level change (if any) should be imposed on the user, which can be set to 'inherit zoom'.
How do I set up a table of contents that doesn't annoy users by resetting their chosen zoom level to an artitrary default when they use the interactive table of contents?
I'm really hoping I don't have to ditch Indesign's table of contents feature and create every cross reference manually.

(editted) So it turns out that you can 'expand' a table of contents by copying and pasting it - this fills the hyperlinks panel with links that can be editted (like above) but breaks the auto-update - they're no longer a TOC, they're just a text frame full of links. (I had got different copies mixed up when I thought the frame holding the editable links was also auto-updating)
The greying out of the links was a red herring, just something to do with the fact they were on a master page.
It does mean that one possible TOC workflow is:
Create a TOC on the pasteboard somewhere.
Before finalising the document, update this TOC and alt-drag the 'live' TOC creating an editable 'dead' copy in an appropriate place in the document
Edit the link properties of the links in the 'dead' copy (don't forget that you can select multiple hyperlinks at once by holding down shift, and edit things like the Zoom Setting all at once with Hyperlink Options in the Hyperlinks flyout menu. )
Then, if you make other changes to the document later on, delete the dead copy, update and re-copy the live original, and re-do the changes to the new copy
This isn't a bad method - it just adds about a minute's work each time you export a PDF (delete, update TOC, alt-drag, shift-select the new batch of .XXXX links at the bottom of the Hyperlinks panel, > Hyperlink Options, Zoom Setting  > Inherit Zoom, done).
Alternatively, you could manually build a TOC using cross-references if you want links to the exact position on the page, not just the top of the appropriate page.

  • How to keep superscript format when generating a table of contents

    Hi,
I have a superscript ® in a title in a document that needs to be brought in the Table of contents. When I do generate the TOC, I cannot keep the superscript format in the TOC.
I could cheat and replace it manually, but there has to be a way it stays with those properties every time I regenerate the TOC.
    Any idea how?
    Regards.

re: I am trying to find the natively-superscripted Unicode R character and cannot find how to create it.
There doesn't appear to be one.
There is one for lowercase r: \u02B3

  • Change formatting of table of contents in Hyperion Financial Reporting

    Hi
We're using Hyperion Financial Reporting to generate carefully formatted books of reports. Users complain about the default table of contents in these books, specifically:
--> formatting: the basic text-only, portrait-only, formatting does not fit with the "look and feel" of reports within the books.
--> placement: the fact that it doesn't seem possible to place anywhere within a book, apart from as the first page (they like a title page to sit at the front of a book of reports).
--> content: having a limited options for defining the text identifying each item within the table of contents. For example, the same combination of dimension members appear for each item in the table of contents, so the first few items look something like:
    Report1_Label
    Dimension2_Label, Dimension1_Label, Dimension3_Label, Dimension4_Label ....................1
    Report2_Label
    Dimension3_Label, Dimension1_Label, Dimension4_Label, Dimension2_Label ....................2
I remember reading somewhere that it's possible to define custom table of contents. Has anyone had any experience of hacking this? Where can I find relevant documentation on defining custom table of contents?
Grateful if anyone has any advice.
    Thanks
    Nathan

    Hi Nathan
I've never done this before but there is a section in the Financial Reporting Workspace Administrators Guide (chapter 5). However this involves accessing the css style sheets and in my experience this can have unwanted and unexpected effects in other areas. It does appear to be fairly well documented though in this case so perhaps it is more reliable in this instance.
It does specifically mention HTML format and not PDF format so if you are publishing to PDF it is worth checking the impact on that too. Take a look at the attached for version 11.1.2 but I'm fairly sure this was available in earlier versions too.

  • Table of Contents formatting issue

Table of Contents will not format properly when I change document margins.  The TOC looked great until I had to adjust my left margin to 2inches for printing purposes.  Now the page numbers are only a couple of spaces from each header, and it looks really bad.  Is there an easy fix, so that I can adjust margins without screwing up the TOC formatting?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Jerrold,
I have certianly considered this an option if I can't get this resolved before I have to turn in my paper.
I bought Pages to write my thesis, espcially since I have to include a lot of capitoned images.  I expected an Apple program to run smoothly and be intuitive, but it has been buggy at times, freezing up, and issues like the wacky TOC formatting from changing the margin size don't make sense.
    Thanks again for your time.

  • Formatting table of contents

I've gotten the gist of creating a table of contents, but I'd like to add chapter and sub-section number markers before each title. I've bolded what I'm talking about:
    1. Chapter One
         1.1 sub section
         1.2 sub section
         1.3 sub section
    2. Chapter Two
        2.1 sub section
         2.2 sub section
         2.3 sub section
Is this possible? How can this be done?
    Thank you

The TOC is formatted automatically and is what it is. You can change the appearance and formatting of the TOC text but not the text itself which is picked up from the document.
The only work around is to export the TOC and reimport it as plain text and then amend it.

  • Table of contents formatting in

when creating a book in epm workspace, v11, is there a way to format the table of contents such that it uses aliases for versions and divisions? seems simple enough, but i can't find a setting switch

As far as I know, FR and Workspace are pretty limited when it comes to formatting books... Sorry!
I didn't see anything new in the 11.1.2.1 release notes either: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/index.htm
