Tabs and leader

Couple of questions for all of the ID experts out there.
Thank you Peter for responding to my last post...this project
is still very much a work in progress. Unfortunately it has fallen
on my lap as a last minute project and has given me little time
for outside preparation.
1st:
I have a long text document that was originally written in word and imported into ID.
Tabs were set in Word but not in any consistent fashion. Is there a way in ID for me
to set the spacing measurements for the already existing tabs - and have it
apply to the whole document, or must I manually adjust everything?
2nd:
If I am able to set the tabs for the whole document with a single adjustment
can a leader also be applied at the same time?
Thank you for your time.

Well, I did try that and it is not working. I am relatively new to styles, so I am sure I am probably
missing a step. I am having a terrible time with this project. The tabs that came in from Word are so inconsistent.
Will the tab alignment setting affect anything - the one that may have been used in Word?
Do I need to match the alignment in ID to have it take effect?
The tabs are all goofy - if I show hidden characters this is how the tabs are displaying. I even tried a
find/replace to remove the excess tabs that were used. This is what I have right now -
after trying to clean up the extra tabs.
...14-16in>>$1,400-1,600
....21-24in>>$2,500-3,000
....Black, 14-19in   >>   $6,000°
....Other, 14-19in   >>   $6,000°
Some folks would say that the Word tabs you're seeing in this document are not "goofy," they're standard Word users inconsistent and uninformed use of tabs, and perhaps also tab stops.
Peter S. is on the right diagnostic track. To add an idea, the problem issues are in both the settings of the tab stops (a paragraph property) and the tab characters that are in the text itself.
If the content is as consistent as your example shows, another approach that you might combine with his suggestions is to search for "in" preceded by one or more digits, and perhaps a dash or hyphen, followed by one or more tab characters, and replace with something suitable. I'm not GREP-savvy enough to suggest something, but Peter S. probably can.

  • Compensating for tabs and leader dots when converting to HTML

A FrameMaker document contains a series of "tables" which are actually very long lists. They have the appearance of a TOC: a text phrase, a long line of leader dots, a tab, and a numeral at the end of the dots.
Since the tabs and leader dots vanish when converting to HTML, what might I do to either reconstruct the missing dots or re-create the look of a table for these lists?
    Thanks,
    Karen

    Hello Karen,
There is no way to automatically replace the tabs or leaders. During the conversion all of the information is completely stripped away, leaving no trace of it in the html code.  In my documents I typically set them up like this:
    In FM
    Test Switch[colon][space] …………………..OFF
    Test Switch: …………………..OFF
    When converted to html
    Test Switch: OFF
There is another, but more difficult way to keep your tabs and leaders somewhat intact, by the use of tables. If you put the data in a table you can keep the information separated by columns and rows. Also you must manual put periods or dashed instead having FM do it. When this is converted to html the data will remain in the tables. By removing the borders of the tables in FM it will appear clean, however; once you convert it to html you’ll see the borders again. You can either leave it this way or control the table properties by a CSS.
I’m not sure how my examples will show on the Adobe Forum, but I put them in.
    In FM
    Test Switch
    OFF
    In FM without borders
    Test Switch
    OFF
    When converted to html
    Test Switch
    OFF
When converted to html with CSS
    Test Switch
    OFF
    I hope this helps

  • Firefox 21.0 on OS X 10.8.4 still has a memory leak that occurs with no Add ons, 1 tab and leads to 3GB of memory usage in 10 minutes.

While using Firefox 21.0 on OS X 10.8.4 with 4GB RAM, Firefox memory usage marches up and up until at 3GB (on my iMac) Firefox hangs and is 100% non-responsive and must be killed with Force Quit. It takes 10 minutes to occur.
    No Add Ons
    One tab

    John99,
Unfortunately, the problem was WORSE in FF 22.0. I regressed to FF21.0 and shut off automatic updates. I may even go back to FF3.6, which is the last one where I didn't see this problem.
Thank you for trying but as a longstanding developer I know that pervasive memory leaks is a sign of a broken development process. Thank you for trying...

  • Firefox loses my tabs and tab groups

I closed down my system normally last night. Firefox closed down. When I started up Firefox this morning all of my tabs and tab groups had gone - AGAIN!
Firefox has done this to me several times and I have never been able to recover my tabs and groups by any of the methods described previously. I am currently using FF 29.0.1 on Windows 7 Ultimate. This loss of tabs and groups has happened in exactly this way on several previous occasions over quite a few years with different versions of FF.
    My history is still present.
Leading up to this I have noticed that FF 29.0.1 was not faithfully preserving tab states. There have been several tabs where, during a session, I have changed the URL that the tab was pointing to only to find that FF has preserved the original URL for that tab when I have restarted it the next morning.
I have come to suspect that what is happening is:
    1) FF saves the tab and groups state in sessionstate.js on close down (and at intervals while running). It creates sessionstore.js with a syntax error in it.
    2) On start up FF loads sessionstore.js, hits a syntax error, (silently) decides that it can't use that store and creates a new one, thereby losing all information in the previous sessionstore.js.
When I save the new sessionstore.js as something else, rename sessionstore.bak to sessionstore.bak.js and then double click it to launch it I get an error dialog:
    Line: 1
    Char: 11
    Error: Expected ';'
    Code: 800A03Ec
    Source: Microsoft JScript compilation error.
Here are the first few characters of the file:
    {"windows":[],"selectedWindow":0,"_closedWindows":[{"tabs":[{"entries":[{"url":"http://php.net/",
The frustrating thing is that I (think I) can see data in there relating to my tabs and groups. Because the JS is minified it's almost impossible to extract the data structures in a meaningful way. Because the file is so large (>2.9MB) and the syntax error my code editors can't make any sense of prettifying it so it's very difficult to pull apart.
I question the use of JS for preserving data in this way. There may be performance reasons for using JS. Wouldn't it be better to use something like XML? At least us poor humans would have a chance of eyeballing the data and doing a manual recovery if necessary. Sod it! We could even write a program to load up the tabs ad groups from the XML!
I have wondered about using Firefox Sync for all of my systems. My worry is that a problem on one machine will blow away my settings on all of them. Does anyone have any experience with respect to FF Sync in this respect?
I've preserved copies of my sessionstate.bak (along with the previous one) in the hope that someone may have a way of recovering the tab and group information contained in there.
If anyone has any suggestions about recovering the tab and group information I'd be really glad to hear them. I can't say loudly enough how frustrating it is to keep losing the tabs and groups. Each time it happens it blows away the context of the several jobs that I'm doing at any one time.
Oh. And I'm writing this message using Chrome as my browser.

What have you tried for session recovery so far?
3MB is quite large and may well indicate some corruption. Still, since as you can see it is largely text, you often can extract the URLs. Doing that by hand would be arduous...
I assume you have seen the following links in other threads mentioning data mining techniques to rescue the URLs from the sessionstore.js or sessionstore.bak file:
    * Using Firefox's Browser Console (formerly known as Error Console): https://support.mozilla.org/questions/969046#answer-471950
    * Using Firefox developer tool "Scratchpad": http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=622036&start=60&p=12098147#p12098147
    * Using a third party website: https://firefox-session-restore.herokuapp.com/
Do any of those work on your file(s)?

  • Tabs and Leaders don't seems to works expected

    Hi,
I am trying to set up a form and wanted to add Leaders (underlines) with the tabs, but keep finding the Leaders either appear the wrong side of the tab, or don't appear all.
    eg:
Name __ (aligned right tab with Leader)
Name __(as above)(blank tab) Tel: __ (aligned right tab with Leader)
If I use 3 or more right aligned tabs with Leaders, the blank tabs in-between start to inherit the Leaders, which appears to be wrong.
I know I haven't really explained this very clearly, but I'm wondering if anybody else is also having problems with Tabs and Leaders?

    Hi
I'm new to Discussions. Forgive me if I breach protocol.
We have the same problem as Davinian does with tabs and leaders.
When preparing contracts and annexures we often need to create a place for our clients to sign on the dotted line, eg:
    Buyer .................... Witness .................... Date ...................
The tab set with a leader of dots doesn't function correctly. Sometimes tabbing from the "r" of "Buyer" to the first tab set fills with dots, then further fills to the 2nd tab set. Other times no fill occurs at all.
In frustration we slide the tab arrows back and forth along the ruler watching the dots appear, disappear, reappear but the layout of our contract is spoiled.
We use Pages '08. Trialled '09 to see if bug corrected - no such luck.
    Any clues?

  • Tabs and leaders

In Word and Apple Works I have always been able to set multiple tabs for any given line and have a leader (dotted line) appear for just one of them. For example I could have a left tab stop at 1 cm and a right tab stop at 16 cm and have a nice leader (a dotted or dashed line)appear between the first and second tab stops.
I tried this in Pages, using the Inspector, selecting just the 16cm right tab stop, and applying a leader to it, ensuring that no leader was applied to the 1cm stop, and yet the dotted line leader was applied to both tabs, not just the 16cm one. This is a pain. As a teacher I often create worksheets with a question number, then a question (on a 1cm left tab) and on the line below, a dotted or dashed leader for pupils to write their answers on.
It seems that Pages won't let me do this. Why on earth not!!!?
    Any answers out there?

    Hello
I tried to reproduce what you get.
I set a left tab at 1 cm and applied a dotted leader to it
I set a right tab at 15 cm and applied nothing to it
and when I insert 1 or two TABs the line remains blank which seems to be OK.
    Trying to test your "workaround"
I set a right tab at .5 cm and applied nothing to it
I set a left tab at 1 cm and applied a dotted leader to it
I set a right tab at 15 cm and applied nothing to it
When I insert one TAB the line is blank
When I insert a second TAB it remains blank
When I insert a third one, I get a dotted line from 1cm to 15 cm
More surprising, if I return to the top of the page, in the first described line, now it put dots from the margin thru the cm15 tab.
If I press a single TAB then enter something then a new TAB I get what I guess as the normal behaviour?

  • I would Like Muse to allow me to create tabs and text leaders within text boxes

I created a web site for a client of mine that includes a price list. My client wanted the price of each item to be consistently aligned. This is something easy to do in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign (for example) but surprisingly not possible within Muse.
    Widget................................................$8
    Product...............................................$8
I ended up manually creating a leader using periods (see example above) however the numbers aren't perfectly aligned because Individual text characters have varying, inconsistent widths. Those varying widths are not compensated by adding or reducing an additional period thereby causing a price list that appears slightly jagged in its alignment. This is especially prevalent in long lists.
The use of tabs with leaders would be the the solution to this problem.

Did you ever see nice tabs and text leaders in any web page ? Probably not, because they don't properly exist in html and css. It's difficult then for the Muse team to develop a feature that has no technical basis.
There is some rudimentary tab technique in the works of the W3C, but the current browser support is poor. Muse could offer some make-shift method (with fixed spaces or characters) but this is not compliant with the principles of html.
I'd rather want the team to bring out tables, and use these in stead of tabs. (Tables are pretty well available in html, since 1993...)

  • Clicking/switching tabs and menus has sluggish/slow performance.

Clicking or switching through tabs has sluggish performance. Going through Menus and Options is sluggish too even with one blank tab opened. I doubt that it is my laptop because browsing through files and folders is fast and immediate. Google Chrome has a huge difference in performance.

Having the same problem. After LOTS of clicking and experimenting, here's what I think I've found:
    # The tab performance when not maximized was much better.
    # Outside of safe mode, the Add-ons tab appears to be FAR more sluggish than any other tab. No specific extension or plugin is slowing it down. It simply lags.
    # Switching between Mozilla sites seems to be slightly sluggish compared to switching between tabs for other sites
    # Disabling the "Tab Utilities" extension (ithinc) made the performance when maximized equivalent to the non-maximized performance. This leads me to believe that the difference between the two is caused by this plugin. The Add-ons Manager tab, and Mozilla sites were still relatively slower.
    # Disabling all other extensions offered no additional improvement, but, strangely, starting in safe mode did. While inside safe mode everything is super snappy.
    # I have a sizable list of extensions, including a large number of disabled extensions (most of which I can't "remove" because they are from 3.6)
The time periods on #5 are very small, on the order of perhaps 80-100 milliseconds. Just long enough that you do a double take and wonder if it was really slower, or just your imagination, but then when you compare against changing tabs in chrome, it's clear that you aren't crazy. There is no noticable difference between safe mode and Chrome, but there IS between non-safe-with-everything-disabled and Chrome.
Is it possible that this is caused by some sort of broadcast to all plugins about the tab change? If so, could this broadcast be completed asynchronously, or else AFTER the tab switch? This is really a perception issue. To feel "fast" to the user, the click should result in instant visual feedback. If my plugins want to know something about the change, I'm satisfied with letting them wait until after '''I''' find out about it.

  • Tabs and following line indentions ?

So if I tab the first line of a paragraph, in order to have the following lines of text align directly with the first line, I must select each paragraph, remove the tab and create an indent? Is there not a global setting I can select that says, "if the first line is tabbed then the following text will align with the first line text after tab?"
    Example:
[TAB] 001. My first line is here and this
    second line represents the continuance
of a paragraph as does this third line just
to give an example of what I do not want.
There is no left alignement of the following
text lines to the tabbed first line.
    What I really want is:
[-TAB-] 001. This is how I would like for the following
[space] text to appear after a tab is inserted. The word
[space] tab and space in brackets are acting as a
[space] visual to indicate the alignment I want. Is there
[space] not a global setting that does this?
If you have followed me to this point, thanks for sticking with me. I know I can set a style and create the indent, but this means I will have to manually set over one hundered paragraphs to that style. It's not hard just time consuming.
    Thanks in advance!!

Computers are not typewriters (which have no way to specify an indent other than hitting the tab key) and professional type is set without leading tabs, except for special cases using tabular type data where a particular row might be missing the first entry or the tab is required for special alignment (center aligned or decimal aligned, for example).
This is not as big a deal as you make it out to be. Define the paragraph style you need with the correct indents and do a GREP search for ^\t(.) and change to $1 and set the change formatting to your new paragraph style. This expression looks for a tab character at the start of a paragraph and any character that follows it, then replaces the tab and following character with just the following character (essentially deleting the tab), and assigns the style of your choice inthe format options.

  • T42p + Access IBM - my mouse fails-only use TAB and arrows? XP desktop

Suppose to be like day one here, my Thinkpad T42p but when I press the BLUE button or the Access IBM Icon
my mouse fails-I can only use TAB and arrows and I am NOT in the post bios, I am in the XP desktop.
I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but no help, same with USB mouse, same with touchpad and same with the red
pointer button mouse.I was almost SURE that the other Thinkpads, same models, would have mouse ability.
How do I fix this mess? What happened ? Help !! Have you tried to use that tool with no mouse ? Aggggggh !

Download a Parted Magic CD ISO-file and burn it on a CD-ROM.
Boot from CD-ROM and run the partition tool.
Left-click the 1st Partition, select "Manage flags" and mark "boot".
Reboot the computer after removing the CD-ROM.
To remove the drivers and tools use "Start"- "Programs " - "Access IBM" - "Program for installing/removal of ThinkPad-Software" (or similar - i only know the german terms). - Later Thinkpads used the "Software Installer"
At the beginning of this year i had set up one of my R51 with the recovery CDs and ran all Windows Updates. - Everything worked fine then.
Just for fun and to learn the effects concerning the system stability, i installed Thinkvantage System Update and updated all drivers and Tools. Some updates didn't work.
    Result:
    - lower performance
    - wireless didn't work anymore
    - sometimes a blue screen running R&R
After that i recoverd the R51 again and removed all Access IBM tools and drivers with the "Program for installing/removal of ThinkPad-Software". Running TVSU then lead to a better result but not very satisfying.
The differences of the old driver and tools - versions to the newest is too big. A lot of registry entries and many files will be kept after removing the old drivers and Access IBM -  tools.
The best result you will get using one of the following ways:
recover from CD/R&R-partition and keep all TVT drivers and tools
do a clean install from a Windows CD and install drivers and software after running all Windows Updates (only 1 GBit ethernet or wireless Lan- driver installed) and then use System Update or manual install

  • I want Firefox to open to my homepage every time after it crashes. I do not want it to return to the tabs and applications that caused the crash. I am willing to lose information. How do I do this?

Firefox crashes or seizes up when there are too many tabs and applications open, and causes my computer to crash or seize up. I use task manager to close Firefox or I restart my computer. Then, when Firefox restarts again, it automatically re-opens all the tabs and applications that caused the computer to seize or crash in first place. This is a waste of my time. I want Firefox to reopen to my homepage even if it crashes. I am willing to lose information to have Firefox reopen to a low-memory homepage. How do I do this?

Set the Integer pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes
That will allow you to deselect the tab(s) that you do not want to reopen, but will allow to reopen other tabs.

  • I can't restore a previous session (it instead recovers the session before) of my Tabs and my home page keeps being reset to firefox

    Hi,
Over the last few days (since i updated to the newest version of firefox) i've been having problems. I usually keep open quite a few tabs that are invaluable to me that I need, they contain vital information i've been needing for research and I can't afford to keep losing them!. I'm used to exiting firefox when i turn off my computer and them saving for my next session when I open firefox back up. For some reason now, if i turn off my computer, when i turn on again and go into firefox to restore my previous session. it will restore the session prior to my previous session but not my previous session.
My default setting was to resume the Firefox session from where it was when I last exited Firefox that I set. The settings are all the same as they was before I updated firefox and I had this problem, so it is set to remember my history. I'm really not that tech savvy so i really don't know if it was teh update that caused it but it seems around the same time. Also, every single time. it sets my home page to firefox (it is usually google)) it will only remain google if i change it back and remain for the day until i restart my computer.
I'd be most grateful to any hint that might solve this problem. Thank you for your attention. I really appreciate the input! thanks everyone in advance!

  • How to stop multiple auto-switching to address bar every time I open a new tab and try to type something anywhere outside of address bar?

How to stop multiple auto-switching to address bar every time I open a new tab and try to type something anywhere outside of address bar? Like something just wants me to use that embedded search when u type something not-web-address in address bar and hit enter. And the most ridiculous thing is that it happens repeatedly on like every second, like I just move down from address bar and start typing again, but then again it switches me to address bar, and 3, 4 times like that. And the result is also that I can't see the address of that page.
I think its has something to do with my AVG antivirus, because this started the same time some AVG Nation started to appear in every new tab i open (and thats also irritating me, I read about it here on support.mozilla.org and it seems that the only solution is to completely reinstall Firefox, but I dont want to lose all my settings) but when i type something in address bar and hit enter it opens the search results in Google.
Please try to help me, I like Firefox but I must switch to Chrome until I fix this problem.
    Thanks in advance

First, please update to Firefox 32. 22 is no longer support nor is it secure. Then let us know if you still have this problem. [[Update Firefox to the latest version]]
