Tabs (much headscratching)

Hi
My theory is that the Tabs maintenance section of APEX was designed by someone who had just taken a large dose of LSD.
Problem:
Trying to create something simple. Two levels of tabs :-
I'm getting so frustrated. I managed to create the Config parent and it's children. Fine. No problem. When I try to add the Bookings and Children then I get tied in knots trying to get my head around the relationships between the following objects..
Parent Tabset
Parent Tab
Standard Tabset
Standard Tab
Pseudo-parent Tab
I end up with the Bookings page having one level of tabs and the Configuration parent tab disappearing (oh and yes the page the tabs appear on has a two-level tab template).
What were the designers thinking? Conceptually it should be very straightforward. It's a simple tree structure with 2 fixed levels
Parent Tabset
Child 1 of Parent -> Child 1 Tabset
Child 1 of Child 1 Tabset
Child 2 of Child 1 Tabset
Child 2 of Parent -> Child 2 Tabset
Child 1 of Child 2 Tabset
Child 2 of Child 2 Tabset
And so on.. The UI to maintain all of this is so convoluted and in some cases irrational.
HELP!

Hi Tyler,
Could you tell me how a Pseudo Parent Tab (circled with dot line, can be selected, no edit icon) is generated? When I created the tab set (1st level tab), I did select a parent tab (default 'main'), but it ended up as a Pseudo Parent Tab, which can not be edited or re-associated to a parent tab. The "Edit Standard Tabs" view has 'main' in the "Parent Tab Set" column. This tab set (1st level tab) would not show up in the GUI as others do. I have created standard tab sets and tabs before following the same process and they worked fine.
I just would like to convert that Pseudo Parent Tab into a normal editable tab set (1st level tab). Could you please help me? • Why the hell you've now decided to change the order of the "Open link in a new window" and "Open link in a new tab" options on the link menu???????????????

Why, oh why have you now decided to change the order of the link menu options? People were so used to it that I bet nobody even look at the menu, they just go for it as I do and many of my friends does!! Why change something that works so fine and has been since ever??

I like the new arrangement because I open new tabs much more often than I open new windows. It makes much more sense than the old way.

• Disable tab groups

Is it possible to disable tab groups? Part of the reason I use tabs is to act as reminders to go back to look something over later, which tab groups suppresses. More importantly, it makes permanently closing tabs much too easy - I've already lost a hat full of tabs once, and although I'll be more careful next time, it's still too easy. It also seems to have disabled the 'Warn me when closing multiple tabs' feature for the last window (the warning pops up when multiple windows are closed, until the last one, when it just closes).

Hi Meghraj,
Yes, I came across this add-on else where - I have absolutely no issue with tabs, they are invaluable. My problem is just with the tab groups feature.

• BIS - ISA 2006 - OWA

Hi,
Has anyone had any luck getting through to Outlook Web Access through BIS with an ISA server in the way?
We are running Exchange 2007 with ISA 2006 out front providing OWA access, we can get any Windows Mobile phone through but the blackberrys fail. Other than shelling out £28 a month to get BES with BPS is there anything we can do?
Thanks for the help.

After much headscratching, I had some success with the following:
1) On the Exchange Client Access Server, set EWS to accept basic authentication
set-webservicesvirtualdirectory “servername\EWS (Default Web Site)” –basicauthentication $true
2) On the ISA, Create an Exchange Client Access rule to publish Outlook Web Access. Use a listener using Basic Authentication. Use an Authentication Delegation of Basic. Add the path /EWS/* to the paths tab.
3) Configure the BIS account to point to https://outlookwebaccessexternalurl
The important thing here is not to include /owa or /exchange because that seems to stop it working
I'd be interested if this works for anyone else.
Cheers,

• System Image Utility fails to create boot image

I am not able to successfully build a boot image with the System Image Utility. The build starts and runs for about 1 minute and then I get 100's of ditto messages saying "No space left on device". There's plenty of space left on the device. Eventually I get a GUI message stating the there was an error creating the image. The image is of course unusable. This only happens on a Boot image. I have no problem making an install image from the same source. Is it just me??
Xserve G5 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I had simililar problems with much headscratching as the result.
I found that whenever I tried to create a boot image with System Image Utility (SIU) using an image file of my existing system as the source SIU would fail with the annoying "No space left on device" message everytime. I did a little investigating and found that SIU always created a 400 MB disk image file to copy to. So the error message was correct as my source was way over 4 GB.
I checked the manual and found the embarrasingly simple solution. It's not mentioned directly, rather it is stated that when you want to create an boot image from an existing system you should boot the machine containing the desired system on disk from an alternate source and the run SIU on that machine. The "trick" is that you're running SIU with the existing system mounted as a disk.
So I went back to my Xserve, mounted the image so it appeared on the desktop. Ran SIU and chose the mounted volume as the source instead of the image file, and hey presto!
MacBook Pro, Xserve, eMac, iMac... any Mac I can get my hands on Mac OS X (10.4.6)

• How to create a view with parameters; read the documentation but nothing!

Hello!
I'm new to the Oracle world but together with my coworkers we need to very quickly study Oracle to figure out whether we'll add Oracle to our list of supported databases or not.
Question: How do I create a view with parameters?
I've read the documentation but I could not find this! I found the sql syntax to create a view but no parameters whatsoever...
I have found on the web some very complicated way of doing this, but doesn't Oracle support Views with parameters?
The goal here is to return a recordset, don't forget, so,please don't speak about stored procedures unless you are going to tell me how to get a recordset out of a stored procedure! ;)
Thanks for all your help and attention!
Jorge C.

You can set up a parameterized view via context as follows:
1. Set up a procedure to set your context values:
create or replace procedure p_set_context (p_context IN VARCHAR2,p_param_name IN VARCHAR2,p_value IN VARCHAR2)
as
BEGIN
sys.dbms_session.set_context(p_context,p_param_name,p_value);
END;
2. Create your context using the procedure you just created
create or replace context my_ctx using p_set_context
3. This is the test table I'll use
create table my_table(col1 number)
and populate it:
begin
for v_index in 1..10
loop
insert into my_table values(v_index);
end loop;
end;
and the view that will be parameterised
create or replace view v_my_table as select col1 from my_table where col1 between sys_context('my_ctx','start_range') and sys_context('my_ctx','end_range')
4. Now set the parameters using the procedure above.
begin
p_set_context('my_ctx','start_range','1');
p_set_context('my_ctx','end_range','5');
end;
5. Selecting from my_table will give you 1 to 10 (no surprise there :-) )
selectng from v_my_table will give you 1 to 5
You can use the context to set formats etc using the same principle. A common gotcha to watch for is trying to set the context directly using DBMS_SESSION.SET_CONTEXT instead of creating a procedure. This belongs to SYS and SYS won't have the privileges to set your context so you get an insufficient privileges result leading to much headscratching and unnecessary grants (at least that's my understanding of it).
Sorry Jorge, as you're new to Oracle I should also have pointed out for completeness sake, that you can change the parameters at any time through recalling the p_set_context, for example, following on from above, after your "select * from v_my_table" and seeing 1 to 5, you could then do
begin
p_set_context('my_ctx','start_range','3');
end;
and when you requery 'Select * from v_my_table' you will now see rows 3 to 5.
Bit of a simplistic example, but you can see how easy it is. :-)

• 13'' dual-core with 16gb ram vs 15'' quad-core 8gb ram -- ram vs cores?

Hello.  I am at a point between choosing a 13'' dual-core i5 with 16gb ram vs the 15'' quad-core with 8gb ram - both retinas.
I will be using photoshop and illustrator while uploading/downloading large files constantly. After much headscratching I almost decided on the 13'' i5 because from my experience, RAM limitations is where I usually run into problems, and don't see the extra price of i7 worth it when it is still a dual-core. For the same price I can get a 15'' quad, but will be stuck with 8gb ram.
I don't care about the screen size, I have good eyes and the weigth trade-off makes this a non-issue.
I'm thinking about down the road, as either of these I'm sure will be fine solutions. I'm just wondering where does the edge really come in this case? Ram or processor / cores?
Thanks.

Thanks for your reply tjk, of course with 16gb on the 15'' for $200 more I'd have easier time, but in this case I am comparing a refurbished - the lowest 15'' 16gb I could find would cost $500 more, I just can't do it.
I should make clear that this particular comparison between 13''w/16 and 15''w/8, they are the same price (the 13 being new) - which is why I'm stuck.
To rephrase - for the same price - which will I regret less in 4 years?
As a side note, I can't believe I'm even thinking about paying this much money for something that is not upgradeable, but that's another discussion entirely.

• Underlined Space Characters and Justifying to the Right

Basically putting together an invoice which have a few fillable form sections that need to be justified to the right. Using the underscore key runs the risk of looking broken unless I want to play with the kerning. I considered using the line tool, but you can not align it to the base of the text as you could with point-based text in Illustrator.
I decided to add "space" characters with the underline effect activated. This works fine with anything justified to the left, but when justifying to the right, the text would shift but the "space" characters would just be clipped. Any solutions?
Running CC v9.1 x64

Thinking about it now. Due to the immense accuracy of bounding boxes, columns, and paragraph controls, I have always overlooked the tab functions. The ability to gear spacing to specific punctuation alone is an invitation to experiment.
Once I found the option to reveal hidden characters, it made understanding tabs much easier. This control over text flow is most definitely good gravy.

• I want to block reported web forgeries, but cannot find the preferences button.

I have Windows XP and Firefox 7.0.1. I am trying to "block reported web forgeries." The instructions I read said I could get to this choice via "Firefox"," preferences", and "security." Within "security" I would have the desired choice.
I have apparently done something wrong. I do not find a "Firefox tab", much less a "preferences" choice. Please be kind; I am not very knowledgeable. I cannot figure out how to copy and paste in this setting. This is the fourth time I have tried to write this question. Several months ago, when I asked a question, I used the wrong terminology and got a sarcastic answer. I need help, not judgement.

I followed your instructions, and they worked great! Once the Firefox button was available, there were other choices I had been wondering about. I will try them out (copy, paste using clipboard) when I have time. Thank you for the suggestion.
I also converted back to the original menu format by going to the "options" choice after clicking on the Firefox button. Within the options you check "menu bar" and the menu bar appears complete with a "tools" choice. This procedure may only work with Windows XP, but if you want a "tools" choice and a menu bar this procedure might be worth a try. The "tools" menu has nearly all the choices available when the "Firefox" button is visible, and very few, if any new options. The key to switching formats is in choosing the "options" button where ever it appears in either format. All of these choices are in the upper-left corner of the screen.

• Firefox cannot display a frame due to protection reasons? Why did this pop up?

I have had Windows Live Hotmail open all day today, having it minimised in a tab. I switched back to the tab much later on during the day and I got a message which was something along the lines of "For security, Firefox has blocked this page from displaying a Frame" or something rather. I am not sure if this is because of a virus or??? What's a frame and why would I get this message all of a sudden?

• Any way to NOT use the Windows theme?

The reason I downloaded Safari on my PC was because I loved the way it looked, and how it worked, plus the smooth text, but not it looks like Google Chrome or IE.
Is there any way to change it to the Mac look?

Yea the new changes are hard to digest for those that liked the Mac look. But I have some advice though, that made me feel more comfortable with it.
Safari Preferences > Appearance > Font Smoothing = Medium
That should make the fonts look like they did before. Also if you use Vista and think the Title bar is difficult to read, try:
Control Panel > Customize Colors > Choose Frost
(if you have a dark desktop background, this makes the tabs much more readable and Mac like :))

• How to roll back from Firefox 29?

Existing thread has been closed.
I want to say that I too hate version 29. If I wanted Chrome I'd just use Chrome. The whole reason I use Firefox is that I prefer its interface and operation. At least I used to.
It's no use you telling me or anyone else that 'it's not like chrome' or that I might just not like the 'appearance'. It is 'like' Chrome and I don't like the appearance. The problem is also the ergonomics - I find it much easier to use tabs at the bottom, MUCH easier to use 'back" and 'fwd' buttons where they used to be, much easier to use square tabs, much better to have a forward button that is always present (even if dimmed) than a tiny thing you have to aim for like an archer, and that is sometimes there and sometimes not. It's much more difficult to find the tiny refresh button located in a place that doesn't suit me - why not have all the commonly used controls over there on the left where they are all in the one place and your poor overworked brain doesn't have to think "Oh yes I'm looking for the 'x' button so I'll look in the place that logically makes sense in the 'x' area" -- which sounds good, but it actually much harder than "I want a control, I'll head up to the top left where the controls are ... ah there it is".
This new layout is a triumph of overthought and a basic lack of understanding of how 'normal, non-tech' people work.
The end result is ergonomically poor, no matter what the many studies and much research says.
And why the need to change in the first place? Many of us use FF because it was what it was, and we liked it. What's with the need to change for no reason? If it works, stick with it.
The whole thing looks like a poorly thought out response to 'we need to update because other browsers look cooler/sexier/more curvy/something than ours, so let's update'.
Someone at Mozilla needs to appreciate that change is irritating in itself, requires substantial input from the user, and therefore should ONLY be used when there is a compelling reason. Which there isn't.
Gah :(

I would not recommend downgrading Firefox. Unsupported versions are not secure. You increase risks to your System and Personal data by using insecure software. When security fixes are released and publicised that also publicises the potential exploits.

Each setting you see in a computer program you use requires work; when a developer wants to build something new or improve something, he or she has to go through each related (hidden) setting and test if it still works like before and do that on each platform Firefox runs on. That's Apple's Mac OSX, various flavours of Linux and various flavours of Windows, including Windows XP. This costs time, lots of it, and that amount grows exponentially with each setting that's added. This comes on top of our work to continuously fix, improve and innovate Firefox.

That's why we also removed the tabs.onTop preference. Awesome community members, who were unhappy about that change, created the Classic Theme Restorer add-on. They deserve our collective hugs.

Personally one of my major gripes is that the upgrade happens without prior warning of major changes, and then we are left in a changed Firefox trying to find out what works still.
Sure the new features can best be demonstrated from the new version, but some prior warning with a chance to read up about the changes would surely help.

• Is there a way to extend the tab-bar downward, as in Windows? Sometimes I have so many tabs open I cannot view them all. Thank you very much!

When I have 10+ applications open in Windows 7, I can click and grab the toolbar edge and drag upward, causing a "second" row of viewable and operating applications.
I was just wondering if the same could be done with Firefox. It's not a tragic issue. Sometimes I get many, many tabs going and (trust me Firefox is my favorite) would like to see all tabs at the same time, even if it causes 2 rows of tabs and cuts down on my viewable screen area.
Thank you very much !

Here is one add-on that lets you add more rows of tabs in Firefox:
