Take 2 - What's the story?

I bought an AppleTV this past weekend. Based on watching the stevenote I got the distinct impression that there were no hardware changes to the AppleTV and the Take 2 update was purely software. Now I am seeing contradictory statements on other websites implying that the unit I bought this weekend will be obsolete by the end of this week?
Can anybody straighten me out here.
Much obliged.

I bought the 40GB a couple days after the keynote, and I'm fairly sure that we just need to wait for the software upgrade to appear and we'll then have full access to all those wonderful features SJ covered in the keynote. The 'new hardware' just means the old hardware with the new software pre-loaded.
Otherwise, it's going back.

  • What is the story on mac vulnerability? Is it serious or not serious?  If not serious, why is this not being explained?  If serious, why are Mac users not being informed of the risk?

    what is the story on mac vulnerability? Is it serious or not serious?
    If serious, why are we not kept informed
    If not serious, why is some much anxiety being created?

    IMO, it is being greatly over-blown in the media and online.
    Man in the middle attacks require the hacker to be connected to the same intranet network that your device is.  Even if they are, unless you go to a secure site and use personal data (like passcodes) they get nothing from stealing your data stream.
    If you are at your home, on your own secured intranet, then you really have virtually nothing to fear (as long as your own home network is secured and not wide open to anybody within range).  If you routinely use a VPN connection when on public wifi, again, you are fine.  Or if you use FireFox, Chrome or another browser that implements its own SSL security, then you are fine.
    The fact is, that even for those in a particular situation that is vulnerable to such an attack, most are not actually under any such attack - it is not nearly as rampant as the recent hype would have it seem to be.

  • What's the story on Story CS6?

    From what I see on the Web site, Story CS6 was supposed to be part of the Master Collection. But on the box, the references to Story are covered over with black tape.
    What's the story on Story? Is it coming later as a download? Or did it die? Or ... ?

    I don't think it's in the Master Collection, but I saw it listed on one page as being available for download from the Creative Cloud. I suspect it will be offered at some later time, although I couldn't find a reference for when.

  • OC4J / OAS 11g - What is the story behind the release?

    We are heavily investing in the Java framework known as Seam which is heavily Java 1.5 reliant. As you're probably aware, 1.4 compatibility was added to OAS as of 10.1.3; meanwhile, the OC4J11 has been in technology preview for over a year. With Oracle's acquisition of BEA and other things - does anyone know what the story is behind 11g AS? Will we ever see it? Will Oracle simply re-brand BEA's products as their own? Oracle is quickly falling behind the Java development/deployment gap; how much longer is OC4J11 going to be a "preview" before they give it the go-ahead for a release?
    Thanks.

    You can also check thread Re: OC4J 11 / JDeveloper 11g Production Release? - Oracle Support has replied to me that Fusion Middleware 11g that contains OC4J 11g is "still not ready to be released".

  • MacWorld e-mail on ms apps had a rebuttal saying iwork now free, but the app store shows it at $30 for the 3 apps, so what's the story?

    So I got my Mac World e-mail, it talked about the free apps from MS (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote), so I downloaded them, in the comments section of the article someone that didn't like them said there was no need as iWork was free and no subscription needed.
    Anyway, after letting the ad for MS 360 play out, word opened, but it wouldn't let me access my skydrive, now called onedrive, it was grayed out and needed the 360 subscription, needless to say I deleted all of the office apps and based on the comments section of the article I went back to the app store to get iWork.
    They are not free, each app is $9.99, according to the app store, so tell me is there something I'm missing, there were others saying it was free, so what is the truth here?
    Currently I use Textilus for creating documents, well one or two, writing on the ipad is horrible, and it still doesn't recognize my printer or any documents I save in Textilus.  I have to save the page as a picture, open up the Epson app, select photos, and print.
    I was hoping something useful would be available, but it looks like that's not going to happen.

    Beginning last September (I beleive) the three iWorks app are free only for qualifying newly purchased devices (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5913)
    And yes, on the iPad, MS office apps can only be used to read files unless you have an Office 365 subscription.
    Can't respnd to what Textilus does or doesn't do when it comes to printing. That might be a question for the app vendor.

  • Itunes 8 Wants Authorization what is the story!!!!!

    Like a fool I allowed the update to Itunes. Now it won't play a recently purchased album from Itunes. It wants Authorization. I know other are experiencing this. Hellooooo Appllleeee what is the DEAL?!
    I am sick of this stuff happening everytime a do an update to software. Someone over there better come up with a solution quick or this computer is going back. I have had it.

    Yes, I have done that. I have restarted the computer, shut down Itunes and restarted it and it works for a few songs than it shuts down and when you go to select a song it asks that you Authorize. It's a software problem and I hope Apple is solving it. It's just a royal pain in the @##$. Hopefully someone who has been having this problem has found a "real" solution that actually holds. Thank you for your help. My anger is at Apple and the slowness with which they deal with stuff like this. For all the good they do, they really suck at customer service, which is crazy for such a great brand. For all the good will you generate with great products, you loose people with bad customer service. If you hear or find anything else please forward or post. Thanks again.

  • What's the Story with Brightness using AutoTone

    AutoTone brightness levels have been pretty whacked out on the PC version for a long time now.  Are you guy mixing up native gammas between OS's or something.  I mean it's pretty much consistently too bright on the PC version by like about +25.  It's the consistency of the overly bright on the PC version by +25 that makes me think its something you guys can fix (take a look at).  Of course some kid or really old guy will now respond with some (subjective/relativity, is your monitor calibrated stuff he learned this year on the internet nonsense) but that's par for the course I guess.  Thanks guys for the the terrific work your doing.

    Yea ssprengel, that's exactly what I've been doing (not using it much though any more).  Wish we could at least edit the code in the preset where all it would do is shadow, highlight recovery and auto contrast.  Those portions of AutoTone seem to work very well.  Something maybe like;
      settings = {
       AutoBrightness = false,
       AutoContrast = true,
       AutoExposure = false,
       AutoShadows = true,
       AutoHighlightRecovery = true,**
       AutoFillLight = false,**
       AutoTone = false,
    **These are the one that do not exist and I wish they did.
    By the way the "Fill Light" portion of AutoTone is also a disaster.

I have a Davis Weather Station at my house and I belong to a couple of forums for weather and software that I use the handle for. Mackerel Sky is a cloud formation as depicted in the image below. That is not taken from my house and the only times I have ever seen the formation I've never had a camera.  I have a personal website up also that takes the data from my station, along with radar, forecasts and such brought in the the NWS. I also send my data to places like WeatherUnderground, Citizens Weather Network and such. I'd post a link to my site but I'm not sure if it would be crossing any lines that shouldn't be, even tho you can get it thru the image. Currently 10 degrees and falling.

  • What is the story with Java and UTF-8

    Im getting bits of info about java and utf-8, things like
    "unless you wrap the FileInputStream, you'll get exceptions with UTF-8 encoding"
    So can someone tell where there is a good resource for detailing problems / advice when dealing with utf-8 encoded data???
    or
    Give me the low down and what the dodge actually is?
    Sorry for my poor English - im a scally
    Many thanks

    1) you've chosen SAX probably because it sticks well to your business requirements (i hope ;-), so keep it!
    2) i am using both James Clark's XP and Xerces as my SAX parsers (XP for big volumes because it offers better performances): i am processing only UTF-8 encoded files with no problems,
    3) sure, if you hit some troubles post again and a lot of pair of eyes will look into it!

  • What is the story with Lightroom

    Can anyone tell me about Adobe Lightroom? I am a pe5 user. Is there any reason to buy lightroom and use it with PE5? Can I replace PE5 with lightroom? Andy

    Robert.....
    It's difficult for me to give 100% accurate info as I've only used the Beta releases and V1.0 has some new features.
    I've been using Lightroom for many months now alongside Elements. I suspect my workflow may change when V1.0 comes along as I believe its Organising abilities have change quite a bit.
    Right now though I use it 100% for RAW processing. The Elements downloader still springs into life and dumps the images to my hard drive, but I then open LR and import the images into that. I'm hoping V1 may have improved and have an Elements type downloader but I don't find that a major obstacle. I could just stop the Elements service and import directly into LR.
    One of the big issues I can see is that both Elements Organiser and LR keep independent databases so a decision will have to be made to either keep them in sync or work them independently. I'm hoping that I can drop the Elements Organiser in favour of LR but to date Elements Organiser has better capability, at least in my opinion.
    Once I've imported the images into LR I review and cull them. (This currently means deleting them in Elements Organiser seperately). The images are keyworded and the keywords are compatible with Elements. I then process the images and Export them as PSDs back to the same folder as the RAW images. Since this is a watched folder Elements picks up the PSDs and the keywords. I then hide the RAW images in Elements.
    Key thing to remember is that Elements has no concept of XMP files which is what LR generates.
    You can also select an image in LR and then choose to Edit it in Elements. LR exports a TIF to Elements - you make your Edits; close the file and it goes back into LR. V1 has a kind of version/stacks feature. This is similar to selecting an image in Elements Organiser and then launching the Elements Editor.
    What doesn't appear to work currently - and I'm not pinning any hopes that V1 will work any different - is that you cannot launch LR from Elements. In some way that doesn't make any sense to me anyway.

  • What's the story with Launchpad app location?

    Got a new MBP. Spent an hour setting up pages in Launchpad. Realized the sold computer, straight from the Apple Store, had 10.8 installed. Had to update to 10.8.2 to run some apps. Reboot and the Launchpad pages are FUBARed. What's up with that? It's been like this since day one of Launchpad. Can't this be put right? Come on man.

    Here it is - I was surprised not to see Launchpad listed, so you may have to use the Mac OS X feedback......

  • So What Is the Story In General About Windows 7 and the HP C7280?

    It doesn't seem like HP wants to support the C7280 well.  There are v12 drivers/software still missing for this printer.  I have unresolved issues concerning wireless and ink cartridge levels.  And now there is the prospect of migrating to Windows 7 and what will that bring?  I'm pretty sure at this point now that if HP remains behind in supporting this printer I will be dropping them.  I'm also pretty sure I will be resisting going to Windows 7 for as long as I can.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Yes, the printer doesnt need v.12 software. IMO it works just fine with v.10, which is the latest one for it. And if anyone does need the v.12 software, then i have mentioned how to do it. Maybe the engineers are too busy testing and developing the Windows 7 drivers that they've sidelined updating printers to v.12.
    I'm going to mention this one again: The C7280 is NOT obsolete. It probably will be in about 2 years or so. But right now, this is definitely NOT obsolete.

    Could someone explain or link me to an explanation of what "Local internet domain" is? I'm trying to understand the difference between local internet domain name and Internet host name. Google comes up with a bunch of Lotus manuals.

  • What's the story on WD Raptor Drives?

    I have been toying with the idea of upgrading the hard drives in my Mac Pro to something in the WD Raptor line.
    What I have discovered is there are must be two "different lines" of Raptors and I don't know what to think of this.
    One "line" is made up of drives that are 300 GB and 600 GB (possibly a 150 GB in there also) and they are much
    less expensive than the other "line" that has 500 GB, 1 TB (and possibly a 250 GB in there).
    A 600 GB Raptor can be had for $100.00 and a 500 GB Raptor runs about $170.00 (a 1 TB Raptor is about $250.00).
    The amount of storage I need makes even a small drive overkill. I have 965 GB free on the 1 TB drive in my iMac.
    Can anyone tell me what the difference is and which one would work best in a early 2009 Mac Pro.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    The new ones are VelociRaptor and come in the 250-500-1000GB and have larger cache and a number of improvements.
    $100 for 250GB / $155 for 500GB are nice price performance
    They are SATA with more of a "scsi flavor" in size, 10K spindle and 180MB/sec
    Maybe you want 128GB SSD for the system, or the 250GB, same prices.
    they are reliable and nice.
    WD Black 1TB $89
    It is not about how much storage you need really most of the time. Boot drive should be lean mean and unencumbered with other stuff: media libraries and such.
    I prefer to keep drives around 50% free.
    Discontinued? maybe not. Last or prior model, yes. You can also find WD Black 1TB etc in old 32MB cache variety - sometimes older cost MORE not less.
    I use the 150GB 32MB model as system drives and for backup system image alternate for my SSDs, in case I have trouble I can swap or dual boot between either and really can't tell difference other than slight noise - the newer VRs are quieter than those old RAPTOR which was pre-VelociRaptor and those are long gone and 2006-era.
