Take a chance on an MDD?

Hi. Here's a challenge for you all.
I've got the opportunity to buy an MDD 1 GHz 2DP with the following description (not written by yours truly): Unit is missing its memory, video card, hard drive, cd-rom and the little battery that sits on the board. It does have the power supply and the processor. The CPU has a large heatsink over it. I plugged the power in and the power button lights up everytime you push it in but then it fades away but the red light on the motherboard stays on and the fan on the power supply kicks on so it is getting power but I don't know if that is what its supposed to do.
(end of description)
Question: In view of the description, can you tell whether this unit is salvageable?
Thanks.

Hello! Well it's certainly been robbed for parts. You can often pick up eBay complete machines for 100-200 bucks. Your luck at rebuilding it might be decided by how much the guy is willing to pay you to take the rest of it off his hands. You'll spend at least 100 bucks on ram, another 100-200 on an OS, 50-100 on a hard drive, 25-100 on a video card, 50-75 on a cd/dvd player and finally 5 bucks on the battery. So you're gonna spend about 330 or more to get something you might be able to get already assembled for 100-200 bucks. I guess it depends on whether you like to tinker. Tom

  • Do I take the chance

I changed from Talk Talk to BT on the 11th August and now my phone does not work! I have a constant engaged tone I cannot receive incoming calls either. I have reported the fault and I have been advised that I have to agree to a engineers call out which could cost me £130! My question is two fold, does anyone have any advice as to whether the fact that my line was OK on the morning of the exchange and now is constantly engaged indicates the fault lies with BT and also looking at the other posts on here how do I prove it lay with them (if it does,) they seem to charge people anyway.

Hi, the thing you have to realise about the test system BT use is that it is very basic and in all honesty not reliable at all, I think it is something like only 60%ish accurate.
You see in the old days when BT were just BT and not the seperate companies it now has to operate by the Repair Advisors on 151 were quite highly skilled and were like virtual engineers who had access to the type of test systems Openreach use. But over the years BT dumped down the Repair Advisors roles because they basically wanted to pay them less and in order to do that they had to make them lower skilled, basically just doing what the computer tells them to do and say.
Also with the creation of Openreach BT Retail had many of those test systems taken away from them because it would not be fair that they have access to them when the likes Sky and TALK TALK don't.
So what I am saying is even though the line result says it test OK I bet you a million quid that the fault will be on the Openreach network somewhere.
So when the Openreach Engineer does come out and finds the fault, say on the Distribution Point or in the MDF don't complain that the 151 advisor was an idiot and couldn't find it in the first place because they can only go by what the useless test system BT and Openreach give them to use.

  • Take a chance on MPEG2

Just got myself a new DVICO TVX 6620n PVR which saves recordings as a 'tp' file format. A quick look around tells me this is an MPEG2 transport format like the more familiar ts file. So, I had a look at the Quicktime MPEG2 addon page, but I see the mixed reviews - seems about half the reviews are failures of some sort. In addition, no-one has mentioned the tp files I'm dealing with. How can I test that this will work before handing over my $ to Apple? because I doubt they'll give me the money back if it fails!
Even with the component, apparently I can't expect QT to play audio on the muxed file - seems I need the free 'MPEG Streamclip' to do that. Streamclip sounds OK, but this class of software seems to attract all sorts of snake oil sellers, any feedback on the good or bad would be appreciated.
Is this all sounding correct? I'd love a bit of guidance. Even if there was someone out there with the software setup I describe who'd be happy enough to try converting the 40Mb sample recording I made.

I still have no idea about the quicktime mpeg2 component.
Having no realtime experience with the TP container, I hesitate to jump in here. However, it seems to me the real question is whether or not MPEG Streamclip can handle this communication protocol container. (Do see TP0 listed but not just TP.) In any event, you might get a better (actual hands on) answer if you could post/e-mail a sample file so that those of us who currently use the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component with MPEG Streamclip can test it and report back regarding our results.

  • KitKat update has turned my phone into a brick. It won't turn on, and I can't get it to take a charge. HELP!!

My phone went through the Kitkat update about a week ago, and since I've ran out of battery with in 8 hours of taking it off a full charge, and now today It died, and I plugged it in, well it won't charge, and i can't get it to turn on at all. My phone is a brick right now and I really just don't understand what I can't do to fix it.

Don't do the update. My phone did the update and the droid laid on his back with an X and now all I get is the red logo. cant do a factory reboot or get into the ap menu just red logo. IT BRICKED MY PHONE I have had it since they came out and have been all over the world with it, and never had a problem until KITKAT BRICKED IT.
Verizon only response is to send me a refurbished phone that I will have to spend weeks to get it set back up to the way that I had it.
I am not happy with the response for their screw up. I don't want a refurbished phone I want my good phone to work and they don't know how to fix it just replace that is the support. I have seen the post on the net and I am not the only person that this has happened to in the android community.
If you want a good paper weight than do the update and take the chance.

  • If I take out my hard drive, will I lose everything?

My sister spilled wine on her macbook and took everything apart to dry it, however it still doesn't work. She wants to check if her hard drive is still alright and wants to put it in my macbook. We have the exact same macbook. I'm just really paranoid and I don't want to take any chances of losing everything.

A hard disk drive exhange should be perfectly OK as long as the Macs really are identical.
Back up your Mac first. This goes without saying.
If you are going to remove the HD anyway, it would be safer to obtain an external enclosure for it. They are about $20. That way you only have to disassemble one Mac.

    Hi,
so you are looking for somebody to take the responsibility for you in case something is going wrong.
I would say YOU need to make the decision depending on YOUR experience/connections ability to adjust/learn new things.

  • Will a mini travel well? what precautions to take if I travel with it?

My life will involve ping-ponging between two addresses over the coming year, and for vision reasons I'm not suited to using a laptop. Need a biggish monitor.
So, I'm asking you long-time mini users out there:
How would I fare if I get a mac mini and use it at home with my existing home peripherals, and buy a monitor and cheap keyboard/mouse to leave at the other end, and travel back and forth with just the mini?
I am wondering if it is too delicate to travel with.
I would not be expecting to use it in motels, airports, etc. while I am traveling. Just want to have it fully usable at both locations.
Has anyone else travelled with their machines, and has anyone found or seen a hard-shell case that the mac mini will pack into well?
    Thanks!

Hi "ed" - to answer your question, I haven't inspected one in person, but I'm sure that the top-end MacBook Pro displays would be fine for my vision.
However, then we start getting into budget constraints... that would be sort of a "Lexus" expenditure where my budget is more "Scion."
I can probably afford a bigger-screen laptop in the PC marketplace, but I haven't looked, actually -- I don't really even need to use a laptop as a laptop, if you see what I mean.
And if I want to switch to Apple, which now'll be a good opportunity to do, I can't afford any of their laptop options (if brand new) at all-- So, I think my only options, budget-wise, are:
    (1) to set up a mini at the other end with bare-bones KB and mouse, and a spare monitor I already have, and ferry the CPU back and forth as desired (sometimes would just leave it there).
Then, if as time passes my eyes get even worse, I can always upgrade to gradually-ever-bigger screen sizes.
Or, (2) to take a chance on a pre-owned smaller/older notebook, like the student-sized macbook, which I'd use the same way-- that would solve all of the airport/portability challenges, all right, but if it broke after a month I'd sure be wishing I'd gone with (1), wouldn't I?
I'm sort of timid about going with anything used, partly because I will be totally new to Apple, and it might not always be clear whether any problems I'd encounter with used equipment would be due to its own malfunction, or just to my own learning curve!!
I was hoping the Apple store website would have some reconditioned or "scratch and dent" laptops on offer, that would have a warranty, but there's nothing.
Thanks for listening! I'll think of your suggestion the next time I am watching the airline baggage guys muscle those checked bags around.... and I'll study how hard they really get slammed.
So far, I've never had occasion to put anything more delicate in a checked bag than a $5 alarm clock.... so I've never paid much attention.... but we've all heard the jokes!!

  • My chances of getting a TiPb that will have fritz?

Jeez, it seems pretty apparent that there is a huge problem with fritz and such in the 15" Ti's. I'm looking for a 667 DVI model, and I'm freaking out now. Are there any people who DONT have the problem?
Did anyone ever figure out what it was? Logic board?

...but generally a TiBook is much cheaper from individual resellers/eBay than a store such as techrestore.
Of course: a typical eBay seller doesn't pretend to have checked it out thoroughly and has no intention of standing behind it. Unless, of course, they have a reputation to uphold, like any responsible business person. When you buy from a responsible business, you're paying in part for responsible, businesslike behavior — including a warranty. It may not be a long warranty, and of course what you've bought can still fail after the warranty ends. You always take that chance, even when buying new.
Bottom line: if you're scared enough by the reported problems with the Ti 667, you'll decide it doesn't make sense to bet hundreds of dollars that a total stranger with whom you'll never have any other contact is going to treat you honestly and deliver exactly what's been promised.

  • My iphone has water damage and it couldnt take anymore and turned off and wont turn back on. What do i do?

My iphone 4 has water damage and it has taken its toll and turned itself off and wont turn back on. I have tried everything, restoring, charging, restoring through itunes and taking it in for repair at an independant retailer. I really need my iphone so i was wondering where the best place to repair it is and if i can take it to apple, how much it would cost?

There is no such thing as an Apple authorized repair facility or technician.  Since Apple replaces iOS devices and does not repair them in-house, they've never offered any iOS device repair training or certification.  Likewise, there is no system of distribution of OEM parts, since there are no authorized repair centers to use them.  Any parts are used, 3rd party recycled or outright stolen/black market.
So, anywhere you take it other than Apple is a situation of you pay your money and you take your chances (and you have no one to turn to if it fails, other then the person or place that failed to fix it for you).
Your optimal option would be to take it to Apple, pay the out of warranty repair fee and swap it for a fully factory refurbished unit (which will have a new screen, new battery and a min. 90 day warranty).
However, if it has been taken apart by someone else already for past private repair attempts, then Apple will not allow an out of warranty replacement.
The out of warranty replacement fees are available for each country under the iPhone support links, e.g. in the USA - http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=ipho ne

  • Thinking of getting G5 Quad - Questions.

    Hello everyone,
I have currently a G4 MDD 2003 dual 1.25. Right now, I am at odds end with either getting for under 1100.00 a nice G5 Quad 2.5 with everything versus a bid for $1000.00 I already put in on a 6-day listing for a Mac Pro from last year 2008.
Here is what I use my current Mac for:
    1. Surfing the i-net
    2. Emailing, and skype, ichat, video conferencing and video chatting.
    3. Playing 1980s based video games, and some modern ones.
    4. Watching regular DVDs, as blu-ray isn't supported through Mac OS X as of yet. Though, not as of yet, I plan to watch High Definition content, such as movies.
I don't use my mac for the following:
Pro Apps, such as Aperture, Motion, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Photoshop CS3,CS4. Lets see what else.. Garageband, heavy intense gaming, and or heavy processor intensive applications.
I am mainly looking at the Mac Pro in getting it for its expandability and being able to upgrade what I choose, and not being pushed back by system integrated parts. I know processors can't be upgraded, so I have learned to live with this as I am happy with my mac.
With Snow Leopard in the works, Can someone tell me before I hit the buy it now button for the G5, should I try and take my chances of winning the Mac Pro? Its a 6-day listing and its right now at 658.00 dollars. I expect that to probably go up exceeding 1500.00 which is really my absolute maximum budget, or should I purchase the G5 quad and then maybe after a few months, try to trade it up for the mac pro? Advice? Anyone?! I think 1099 for a G5 Quad is quite a nice price!

"but if you want to be ready for future apps and OS you should go for a Mac Pro" - I know, but my chances of getting the mac pro on Ebay, at least for now are slim to none. Although, I also bidded on one for $1000.00, while there is a 6-day auction on one, and the price is now at $350.00 something, I doubt I will win it simply because there are too many people out there that want one. So, my hope is that within a few months once I have the Quad, I plan to trade it up for a Mac Pro as the Quad G5 I am sure has a higher resale value compared to my G4 MDD dual 1.25 which I have currently and typing this on.
Also, according to the seller, there is no airport installed. My other question is this: Is there a PCIe option for airport extreme wireless, or can I just use the USB wireless adapter and forgo having to spend another 217.00(mac-pro.com) for part number: MA252G/A which is the airport card/runaway card combo?
I didn't really give attention to the leak problems, but you said some of the Quads have a liquid cooled leak problem?

  • Manually Backup to PC - incl. Voice Memos?

After reinstall OS and new iTunes - my iPhone data wouldn't transfer to iTunes. I did manual back up (to PC) and I'm about to restore my iPhone.
What's very important for me is NOT TO LOSE VOICE MEMOS that are on my iPhone. Are Memos included in manual PC backup?
Or: A) Is there a way to get voice memos (copy, save to my PC) without using iTunes
          B) Find in my PC from backup those voice memos? (Before I take the chance - restore my iPhone and find out if voice memos made it...?)
    I have iPhone 5S(or C), using OS Win 7 64x.
    Thank you

Not sure about that, I don't use voice memos so I'm not familiar if they can be transferred to your computer via iTunes sync.  But from the Voice Memos app itself you can send them out via email and they'll be an .m4a attachment that you can save.  Just tap the send icon (rectangle with arrow pointing up).
But you cannot extract your voice memos out of your iOS backup if that's what you're thinking.

  • How to reset my MacBook Pro for re-sale

I'm thinking of selling my 2010 MacBook Pro, which I bought with OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. When selling previous Macs, I've deleted everything, including other user accounts and then re-installed the OS from the supplied CDs or DVD. This then leaves a new and pristine condition for the new owner to set-up as required.
However, I'm currently using Lion, which is not available on a disk. So my question is, how do I get back to a new version of Lion ready for my Mac's new owner to set-up as their own?
I've read on these forums about booting and holding down the Alt key in order to boot from the Restore partition, which hopefully has a bootable copy of Lion. Other threads suggest that I should Show Package Contents of the downloaded Lion file and burn the DMG to a DVD using Disc Utility. I guess that this will produce a software update disc and that the new owner will still need to boot initially with the Snow Leopard disc and follow the software updates until a point is reached whereby the new Lion disc will work.
I want to sell this as having OS X 10.7.3 Lion - I've paid for the upgrade and wish to pass this to the new owner.
Any thoughts or advice gratefully received.

The other person can do illegal things on your old machine or worst set you up. Which you will have to hire a computer specialist to prove your innocence, if there is evidence to be found, one simple mistake of missed evidence and you could be in serious trouble, fighting your case from a prison cell hoping to get a retrial.
When you erase the drive from the 10.6 disk, select the entire internal drive on a far left, not the slightly indented partition underneath it, and use the Erase with Zero option at least, or 7x for military/government grade erasures.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3191
The way technology is recording everything we are doing, you can't afford to take any chances, break from your machine, break from it completely. Let them install Lion with their AppleID, then they won't have any trouble updating to 10.8 or even 10.9., getting redownloads if they need it.

  • HT1420 HOW do i get Apple to understand that i have a big family and my kids do not have credit cards or their own apple id so i have more than 5 computers?

    I just spent over 2
$2000 on the new iPhone 5 for myself and my wife, we sitll use the other iphone4's  that we have with other numbers and as we have a big family we have 7 computers that all need to work with itunes. We also have 5 ipads and i was thinking of getting another one but because of this problem the two new iphones and my macbook pro are usles devices when it comes to music and syncing is impossable... My kids do not have there own apple id as it needs a credit card, which they do NOT have. They are kids. so how can i get iTunes to allow me to get more computers online. I just bought an new/ refurbushed 17" mackbookpro as my old one was dropped and still works but do not want to take a chance for my work... anyway iTunes will not let me use this computer with iTunes either... AAAHHHHH I do not want to authorize and de-authorize computers as i use them and it looks like that is not possible anyway based on their statment that htis can only be done twice a year... HELP PLEASE. Thanks Richrd

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

  • I need to move my itunes from an old pc to a new one. How do I move the library

I am moving my itunes operation from an old XP pc to a newer Vista laptop.  I have backed up my library to an external hard drive.  I have downloaded the current version of Itunes on the new pc and now need to populate it with my itunes library.  What is the easiest way to do that? I don't want to take a chance in losing any music.

This is the process I usually recommend.
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
If you've done the backup properly, delete any existing empty iTunes library that has already been made then copy in the entire iTunes folder from the external drive into your profile's music folder. Start iTunes. It should "just work" with no need to import anything.
