Takes a few seconds to do DNS operation on Mac OS X

When I go to a URL, it usually takes from 2-5 seconds to figure out the URL and hit the correct IP address. Is this somehow wireless related? Is there a network setting I should be using to quicken up the DNS lookup? My network settings are default right now. Should I setup DNS to be my routers IP address?
Thanks for anyones input. I appreciate this forum.
Steve

There are 3 other wireless networks with a Ch ID of
11. How can I change that?
You can't chanbe there channel numbers but you can change yours.
Login to your wireless router. You normally do this by entering the router's ip address into your webbrowser eg.
http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1
What is the make and model number of your wireless router?
You should change your wifi to channel 1 or 6.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

since the last update a few days ago of firefox, the time has been 25 to 35 seconds to enter bookmarks or even the time it takes to page down when it used to take a few seconds. can you tell me why it taking so long since the update on firefox. may another update is in order.

I have now done pretty much every suggestion that even vaguely applies in the various helpful link provided. Thanks for the ongoing help. =)
I have managed to get FireFox's start-up memory usage down to about 100,000K, however it appears that memory usage keeps creeping up the longer FireFox is open. (It seems to top out around 500,000K.) And I'm not talking open for many hours or days - but rather for minutes and possibly up to a couple hours. (Based on how long I've been fiddling with all this so far.)
On the plus side, it does not appear GreaseMonkey is the culprit since with it active or disabled this memory creep still occurs. Although having GreaseMonkey enabled definitely increases the rate of memory creep. Though once it has creeped up to 150,000+K, disabling GM does not make it drop back down to the starting 100,000K.
I should point out I run a MacBook Pro and use Bootcamp to partition the hard drive and run it as a Windows 7 PC about half the time. I am running it literally as a PC or, alternately, as a Mac depending on which hard drive I choose to load. (I'm not "windowing" it.) This problem exists regardless of whether I am using the PC or the Mac. These repairs have been made currently on the PC side, and I will attempt them all again on the Mac side. I find it odd that this enormous memory drain has occurred on 3 different computers at the same time. (The two "halves" of my home laptop as well as the PC at my work place.)

  • Why are Folio pages initially blurry and take a few seconds to render?

    Hi.
My Folio pages all take a moment to render when viewed on the ipad with adobe viewer, which means they are blurry for a few seconds then they become crisp when they are fully rendered. It really kills the whole feel of my work, making it feel cheap. I tried chaning over some of the imported ai files to PNG but it still happens. Is there anyway to fix this? Also, my goal is turn this into an app, will this blur/render also happen when this is output as an app?
    Thanks for your help.
    Paul

this delayed blurring issue happens to my folio... It seems to be a new issue for me. I've been working with dps folios for a couple years... Never noticed it so bad before on my previous products. In fact, I took a break for a few weeks on a current project and just started working on the folio again... A few weeks ago my folio didn't blur so bad. It's not that much more complicated now than it was then, but this week the blur thing was WAY more noticeable of a delay. What gives? I use PDF format, then and now... Haven't changed any settings.  Doesn't happen so bad on an ipad2 but really delayed on ipad3

You probably have not seen anyone reporting the exact same problem as you. All three crash reports have the same crash signature and as currently ranked 67 it is not the commonest of reasons for a crash.
I hope you enter your email contact information when reporting crashes. I note you see this crash when using videos, others may possibly see this crash in other circumstances.
You have already tried the obvious, attempts at a fix so it is now down to wait and see, maybe developers working on the bug will report something or fix it.
Did you try my suggestion of installing portable ESR ?

  • ITunes takes a few seconds to start playing MP3 files

I just started using this new MacBook Pro and transfered my music library to the new laptop. I'm having a problem with iTunes playing MP3 files: when I double click on a MP3 track iTunes seems to freeze for like 3 - 4 seconds before the track starts playing and then it plays normally without a hitch. This is happening with each and every MP3 track that I have in the library as well as new MP3 tracks that I'm adding. Th short delay/freeze also occurs when I try to view or alter the info of an MP3 track in the library, so that when I right click on a track and click Get Info, the 'Get Info' screen will take about 3 - 4 seconds to show up and the same freeze happens when I click OK to close the 'Get Info' screen.
Note that this happens only with MP3 tracks. Tracks purchased from the iTunes store (AAC) do not have this problem and start playing without any delay/freeze.
Another weird tidbit: When MP3 tracks are in the same playlist (or album) and I let them play one after another (without me skipping to the next/previous song) then the delay/freeze does not occur at all. This delay seems to just happen when I start playing a song or when I click the fast forward/Rewind buttons to skip to the next/previous track.
Does anyone know what might be causing this? And if a fix is available somewhere? Thanks in advance!

It only happens on mp3s not on AAC's to me too! Just so you all know. I thought an EXTERNAL DRIVE was my problem but after hours of research I found it's probably an intentional bug (just kidding Apple you don't hate other companies that much....geesh! ) It might not be this...but you never know.
I thought maybe it was the TAG but it seems this has nothing to do with it. Point is either Apple left a bug on the last update of itunes MP3s because to them it's less of a priority or it's being messed up by Amazon folders (still looking in to), or maybe there was a problem with the install.
So far my options are to get an MP3 to AAC convertor and dump my 3000 songs into a program for converting, wait for an update, reinstall, or keep looking for a missed solution.
    Any help would be appreciated!!

  • TM2 Touchscreen takes a few seconds to work

My tm2 works great with the pen.  No problems with the pen.  The problem is when I use a finger.  If I have  my finger away from the screen for several seconds, minutes, or whatever and touch the screen, it doesn't work.  I have to hold my finger on the screen for a couple of seconds before the touch will work.  If I keep my finger pressed to the screen, I will always have touch capabilities.....Man this is hard to explain.  Let me try a different approach - it seems that my tm2 takes a couple of seconds to register my finger before the touchscreen works.  I can be browsing the internet for example, and find an article I am reading.  While reading I have no reason to have my finger on the screen to control anything.  Once I am done and need to perform an action - like scroll down, hit the back button, whatever, I put my finger on the screen to perform the action and nothing happens -it doesn't register my finger being there for two seconds or so.  This causes me to only use the pen, since two seconds is a long time when doing something on a computer!
The tm2 is a month or so old, I bought new from HPs website.  It has been this way since I bought it.  Is this the way its supposed to work?  Or perhaps a setting I am missing?  any help would be very apprecaited, I love this computer and I am hoping I don't have to return it to be fixed (I don't want to be away from it for long).  Thanks for listening!

    Hey,
I think I have the exact problem as you with the HP Pavilion dv6.  My finger always needs to be touching the screen for around a full second before the touch function is activated.
I have been searching the whole internet with no luck on any help and the only closest post I have found is your.
What is funny is that just minutes after finding your post I think I have solved the problem!
For my laptop the problem came from the computer turning off my touchscreen device/driver to save power.
So, what I did is that I went into "Device Manager" from "My Computer".
Then once inside "Device Manger", underneath the "Human Interface Devices" catagory I found "Wacom Gesture Touch", which I guessed is the device that is controlling my touchscreen.
Once inside "Wacom Gesture Touch", I clicked the "Power Managment" tab and found and UNCHECKED the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option.
And that was it!  Now my touch screen response to my finger the moment it touches the screen.
Go to device manger and see if you have any luck of finding the device/driver that is controlling/driving your touch screen and see if this helps.
Hopefully this can solve your problem too!  It has been bothering me for the longest time.

  • Why there is suddenly a white background with an apple-like when you turn? but it takes a few seconds

Help please! iPad is new and i love it so much!

If the iPad is rebooting then no, that isn't normal. If it's just Safari that it's happening in then try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data and also Clear History, and also close Safari via the iPad's taskbar : double-click the home button to open the taskbar and then swipe or drag the Safari app's 'screen' up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
Then do a soft-reset to see if it then works properly : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If that doesn't fix it then try backing up the iPad and then restore that backup back onto it. Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy your downloads over to your computer's iTunes library, and then do File > Devices > Back Up to take a backup (you should also take your own copy of any important documents and/or photos ; they should be included in the backup but it's best to have your own copy as well), and then restore to that backup via File > Devices > Restore From Back Up (your iTunes downloads aren't included in the actual backup, instead the restore picks them up from your iTunes library, which is why you need to do the Transfer Purchases).

  • TS3623 Why is it when I rent a movie from Apple it takes all night to load & then when I try to play it has to load again? Netflix just takes a few seconds to load & play In the same [Apple ] device !

Why is it when I rent a movie from Apple it takes all night to load & when I try to play it starts to load again for a while before it plays ? Netflix loads & plays in seconds [ usually] in the same device!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
One of the main reasons this occurs is because Netflix uses a feature called adaptive quality and iTunes uses a fixed quality. Netflix is able to reduce its quality to such an extent when it detects that you have a poor Internet connection that the data rate of the movie is as low as 0.5 Mb per second, on the other hand if you have chosen to view an HD movie from iTunes U have chosen a movie with a data rate as high as 5 Mb per second.

It is also possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache, extensions.rdf) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox [[Profiles|profile folder]] to reset the extensions registry.<br />
New files will be created when required.

  • Quicktime Plugin/Firefox stops playing mp3 after a few seconds

We've run into a problem with Quicktime Player in Firefox (Win XP) only playing the first few seconds of an mp3. It doesn't happen with all mp3s, but out of the five we've tested four showed this problem... only one of the five played through to the end.
When accessing the mp3 file, quicktime plugin loads with the big Q, takes a few seconds (i.e. seems to be downloading the full file), displays the controller, then starts playing. The progress bar moves quickly to the right and stops when it reaches the far right. For some of the mp3s it's only a second or two, for one it is about 8 seconds. The ones that only play for a second or two are regular music mp3s of about 3-5 minutes in length. The one that plays 8 seconds, is really 17 minutes, 42 seconds long.
All of these seem to play fine with the Quicktime plugin in IE. And all the files play fine in iTunes and Quicktime as local files as well as streaming.
The music files are mp3s generated by iTunes using the "Convert to MP3" function (original files are m4a files from the iTunes store).
The longer file (a podcast) was generated by a third party, so I'm not sure what tools were used to generate it, however I've tested two versions generated by iTunes that also did not play past 8 seconds:
    - Original encoding with ID3 tags converted to a different version by iTunes
    - New encoding generated by iTunes using the "Convert to MP3" function
(FWIW, renaming the files doesn't make a difference either.)
I have confirmed that this is happening for a colleague of mine on his computer as well.
Reloading the page/mp3 file (F5), force-reload (control-F5), disabling the cache (using Web-Developer Plugin, or Firebug), clearing the cache (through Firefox's Options->Advanced->Network->Offline Storage settings, or through "Clear Recent History") ... none of these seem to make a difference.
However, I did notice that for the files that weren't working, using Firebug's Net panel, it looks like the plugin starts *and finishes* playing the file before the file is completely downloaded (i.e. the player stops playing and the Net panel still shows the file downloading -- usually for a few seconds more before it is completely downloaded).
(And now the one mp3 file that was playing fine is no longer playing. It too just plays a second or two then stops...)
This is with Firefox 3.6.3 and Quicktime Plugin 7.6.6 on Windows XP Pro.

  • Songs pausing for a few seconds when using speaker docking system

Got a Logitech AudioStation speaker docking system. Every 3 or 4 songs played seems to pause for up to 5 seconds then continues playing normally. The pause icon doesn't appear on the ipod, just the play icon. The countdown timer pauses though. Also skipping songs with remote control a problem. Sometimes skips two with one press. Also takes a few seconds to 'think' between songs. ipod also defaults to shuffle album every time it's docked. Anyone else experienced these problems? Is it docking system or ipod?
