Takes a long time to connect

Sorry I searched as much as I could.
I have a wireless router WRT54GX2 and have 2 laptops that I use.  Recently one of the laptops has started taking anywhere from 2 - 5 minutes to connect to the router, sometimes I have to restart completely.  My other laptop is still working fine and picks up in seconds.  I went into my network connections and set a static IP address after reading somethings online and that seemed to help  but I also read keeping it set like that isn't the best way to do it.  Anyone out there please help, this is drving me nuts.
I guess I should be more specific, the connection does not even try to connect, the icon just stays at the bottom with the red x on it.  My wired connection works perfect as well as wireless when it finally connects.
Thanks,
B

First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
On most wireless computers, the software has a section called "Preferred Networks"  (sometimes called "Profiles" ).  Go to this area, and delete all networks named "linksys".  Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Make sure that your current network is listed, and that it is set to automatically connect.  (Note:  you may need to highlight your current network, then select "Properties" or "settings" to do this.)
Hope this helps.

  • Takes a long time to connect to the internet when I first open an app

I bought my Macbook Pro Retina 13inch last weekend and I love it! Everything was working fine but over the last couple of days, when I first open an app, for example Safari, Google Chrome, iTunes, App Store, anything that requires an internet connection, it takes a long time to load up that first time, but after the first page has been loaded it works again fine until closing the app and re-opening it. When loading the App Store or iTunes it has even said an internet connection is required, even though my connection is fine and the other apps are still loading ok.
I first thought it was my WIFI connection but I have checked my router and everything seems fine, also my iPad and iPhone are still working fine with the internet.
Has anyone else had the same problem or can offer me a solution?

I am getting the same issue, on first starting safari the first page takes an age to load.. once it has everything is fine.
I have tried the 'Reset Safari' function but no difference. This only happens on my Macbook Pro Retina, Using safari on my iphone or ipad is fine. (I connect via ethernet too so its not a wifi problem.)
Any one got an answer to this yet?

  • Exchange 2013 mailbox takes a long time to connect with Outlook 2010

We just installed a 2013 CAS/Mailbox server in our Exchange 2007 environment and are running in coexistence while we migrate users over. So far I have only moved one 2007 mailbox over, a new account used for testing. Everything is working fine, OWA,
ECP, ActiveSync, etc... When connecting Outlook to a 2007 mailbox autodiscover takes a couple seconds and Outlook opens fine. The problem is when connecting Outlook to a mailbox on the 2013 server. Autodiscover takes about a minute before it finally finds
the settings and the mailbox takes about 30 seconds to open everytime. It generally times out, I click retry and the mailbox opens. Once in everything is good but the initial loading always takes a long time, double the time when opening Outlook with a shared
mailbox attached. All autodiscover is autodiscover.domain.com, Exchange 2007 is all legacymail.domain.com aside from the components that need to point to 2013. We do not have any certificate issues, well that's not true, at some time in the last couple years
someone applied a 3rd party cert to our domain.com root but not sure if that would cause this issue. Also, these are internal clients we are trying to get going with the 2013 mailbox, not external. I just applied a registry change that helped someone else
out there by disabling IPv6 for all components but that did not work for us MS KB929852. Any suggestions? Right now I am thinking of changing the internalURI for autodiscover to the FQDN of the server but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.
    Jeremy

Hi Angela, thanks for the response. I cannot post links or pictures as my account has not been verified?
The autoconfiguration tests passed, I will paste the xml below. Ping times were all under 1ms. When I entered the IP for the 2013 serve I received errors that the connection to Exchange is unavailable followed by another one that the name cannot be resolved.
I did this test by removing the Outlook profile and creating one manually without Autodiscover. I am able to ping the server by all names from the command prompt.
Our autodiscover.domain.com points to our 2013 server and the name is resolvable both internally and externally. Our certificates cover the internal server name fqdn as well as external names. I am doing all testing in the internal network.

  • Takes a long time to connect using D-Link router

I recently purchased a D-Link 802.11n router to replace my old Airport Snow, which seemed to be failing after many years. Now that I have the D-Link up and going, I have two problems:
1 - When I first start either Mail or Safari, it seems to take the router several minutes before it actually connects to the Internet.
2 - Internet access speeds seem to be slower than they were, on my wired network.
Does anyone know what may be causing these problems, especially the first one? Is there a setting I need to change, or should I just buy an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule ?
    Thanks!

  • Mail takes a long time to connect to outgoing server

This has been touched upon in a number of threads but I'll post my own particular version in case anyone can throw any light on it.
When sending emails (Mail 3.6, OS10.5.8) it can take up to 1 minute for Mail to connect to the outgoing server. In the "Activity" window I get the message "Connecting to [server name]" for up to a minute, then finally Mail connects and the message goes through instantly.
This happens with any of three or four outgoing servers I have available. If I send another message immediately after the first, it is sent straight away.
I've tried the usual disk repairs, repairing permissions etc. I've thrown away Mail prefs and the Envelope Index etc. Tried with and without SSL. MY ISP can see no problem at their end and no problem with any of my settings, and other computers on the same network have no problem.
    Anyone have any further ideas?
(I did post a similar problem in an earlier thread: in that case (OS10.4.11) mail would connect straight away but on sending the "100% complete" message would be shown for up to a minute. It is possible and even likely that the new behaviour is just a different manifestation of the same problem. Weird that it's still there after upgrading to OS10.5)

    Hi,
This is a characteristic of some, but not all, ISPs, and not the SMTP itself. It involves DNS. See:

I am using database 11.2 on Linux x86-64 platform.
Using SQLPLUS (bequeath) to connect to the database as a particular user it takes a long time to connect and connecting to the database as any other user is instantaneous.
If I use TNS names and remotely connect to the database as the same user, it fails with following error

  • Wifi takes long time to connect

My MacBook Air (13-inch, mid-2013) takes a long time to connect to any wi-fi network (~ 30 seconds), including known/previously connected ones. Upon wake from sleep, the network will have disconnected and will have to reconnect, again taking about 30 seconds. Also, I notice that even when the display turns off briefly, the network will still disconnect. It does not matter which network it is. However, Power Nap notifications will still show up and be up to date upon wake, suggesting that the disconnection is happening only when I wake the computer.
    Things I have tried:
    - removing all networks
    - toggling wake for wi-fi network access and put hard disks to sleep when possible
    - setting Location
    - deleting all network system preference files and restarting
    - resetting SMC
    - restoring OS X Mavericks (10.9.3, clean install) with no recovery of network settings
Any ideas on further things to try?

The latest OS X update (10.9.4) is supposed to fix some problems like yours.

  • MacBook Pro takes long time to connect

I know there are lots of threads about MBk Pro Airport connection probs so apologies for starting another
I’m using a MBook Pro 2.2Ghz running 10.4.11 together with an Airport Extreme (11n) base station. I have only recently switched to the ‘n’ version from the previous 11g which gave a host of problems with disconnects and so on.
Even though signal strength is good, when using 11n, the MBk takes a long time (up to a minute or so) to find and establish the connection, even though this is the only network in the house.
I have a feeling that some of the mods I did as per other threads to get a connection using the 11g may not have been fully reinstated to the current defaults. At present I have the following in system/library/extensions:
    AppleAirPort.kext v 3.4.9
    AppleAirPort2.kext v 4.0.5
    IO80211Family.kext v 1.6.2
I have a feeling I should also have AppleAirPortEnabler.kext (version?).
Could someone confirm the above are the current default up to date versions as at 10.4.11, and also whether I should have the AppleAirPortEnabler.kext installed as well.
I know I should have the originals - I did but they have gone missing. Probably buried in the drive somewhere, neither I nor Spotlight can find them.
    Thanks for any help.
Happy New Year to all on these boards from a rather dull UK Midlands.

Given your connection will eventually come good you'll probably find that your problem lies with your DHCP server and your MBP's inability to quickly get a new address. Check the DHCP's server admin that it has a decently large enough address pool as having too small a pool can often cause these issues. I normally recommend having a pool around 50% more than the number of computers that it serves else a minimum of 5.

  • It takes long time to connect Satellite A110-049 to Actiontec GT701-WRU router

    Actiontec wireless router model GT701-WRU
Since buying a Toshiba A110-049 running Windows Vista (this was necessary because the old laptop gave up the ghost) We have been having problems connecting to this router.
Using the old laptop, running Windows XP, connection was instantaneous and reliable.
Now, using Vista, it takes a long time (10 minutes or more) to get a connection. In fact, we pick up signals from more distant networks more readily than from our own router.
I have been in touch with Actiontec technical support, who have been very knowledgable and helpful in the past. However, I am told that nothing can be done about signal problems.
I think it is rather strange that there were no signal problems before migrating to Vista: the router and laptop are both in the same locations.
Is there a known issue with either this model laptop or router?
I'd be grateful of any help.
    John

Sorry to raise this problem again, but I have just discovered something.
Routinely, when I first boot up without connecting to the wi-fi router and then later attempt to connect, I can be waiting for twenty minutes or more before the router is 'seen'. Today, in fact, I waited for an hour without my laptop finding the router in the next room, whereas a neighbour's (unsecured) Linksys router was picked up instantly. Having become rather fed up by now I re-booted, this time via the 'Internet start button' (sorry, I can't remember its proper name, but it's the button just below the main start button on the left of the keyboard!). This time it connected with the router immediately.
Can anyone suggest what is happening here?

  • Firefox is running slow, sluggishly, websites take a long time to load, to connect. I've done everything this board has suggested.

Firefox is really starting to annoy me. Sometimes it runs slow and sluggishly, other times it doesn't. Usually it does though. When I open new tabs, the connection icon will just keep swirling. I constantly get High CPU Useage alerts from my virus protection. I've done everything listed in the below articles. Does anyone have some advice? Firefox didn't use to be like this.
    Thank you.

Alright, it's getting to the point where I can barely use FireFox anymore. It's getting worse by the day, I don't understand. Web pages take a LONG time to load, but sometimes they don't....it's hit or miss. But when they do take a long time, they take a long time.
It's getting very bad. I don't know much about computers, safe mode, and all that. It would really help if someone could walk me through what to do, like they would a 10-year old... actually a 10-year old probably knows more than me. Well you get the idea.
I really want to keep using this browser, but if I don't get it fixed I will have to stop. Like I said in the initial post, I've done all the things those two links suggested. It got better at first, but now it seems like it's gotten worse.

  • My iPad air 2 takes a LONG time time to charge

So I recently got a IPad Air 2 and I have used the 10w charger which it came with but it takes a LONG time to charge. In around 1 hour is only goes up around 10% and the charger gets quite hot. Also sometimes it displayed the message,"Not charging," up in the corner where the battery symbol is. Now I got the 12w wall plug charger and it's abit faster and the charger gets hot but not as hot as the other one just warm. I haven't had the message,"Not charging," yet.
Has anyone had the same issue or can help because I don't think It is a battery issue as the iPad air 2 is brand new and I only got it 2 days ago.

Mine is a new IPAD Air and I have about 50 apps - the device has been trying to download/sync my apps overnight and it is nowhere near done......I have been trying to do it through Itunes leaving it with the IMAC (syncing computer) overnight but it is nowhere near done......
The IMAC uses a wireless connection for Itunes, etc.....
As of now the IPAD Air is showing that it is downloading but I wonde whether I should shut it down and restart?
The downloads have been going on for about 12 hours.....

  • Takes a long time to open small MS Word Documents on SSL VPN

I have an issue that when users connect to my ASA 5520 via SSL VPN it takes from fifteen seconds to three minutes to open up small Microsoft Word documents, it also takes a long time to save changes. Users also reporting Word crashes when on the VPN, but not when they are on the LAN. I have checked the endpoint speed of my cable modem and all is well there. The DNS and WINS settings are correct on the ASA. I have turned off compression and enabled DTLS. Any suggestions? Thanks

Reduce the mss to 1300. If that doesn't fix it, keep lowering it by 100 each time. If you get down to 1000 and it still doesn't work, then we need to look at something else.
    sysopt connection tcpmss 1300
