Takes too long to hibernate when I close the lid - Also random device noise when it boots up

Hello guys.
Ever since i've wiped the machine, i've been having these two problems. When I close the lid, it used to go to sleep straight away, but now I can see the sleep light (and the power button) flash and flash, then it goes to sleep.
When waking up it goes through the lenovo startup screen and resuming windows, then it asks for a password, before I used to open the lid and it would ask me for the password straight away. I know it was going to sleep because I could hear the beep straight away when I closed and opened it, but now it just takes too long.
Also, everytime I boot up into windows or resume into windows from a sleep state, I can hear the device noise, like something is being plugged in/out. But there is nothing being plugged in or out at the time. I can't get to device manager quick enough to see what it is that is causing it.
But all drivers seem okay.
Thanks in advance.
Sam.
EDIT: Also noticed, when the lid is closed, randomly the laptop turns off (hear the beep) an then turns back off again.
Weird.

  • Won't sleep when I close the lid - HELP!

A while ago, my iBook G4 1GHz was knocked off of a table. The display was smashed and the whole display assembly was destroyed. I bought a new (used) display assembly and installed it. Worked fine, but when I closed the lid, the iBook woudn't sleep. I checked the placement of the magnet in the top case and I reset the PMU. Still no sleep. So I contacted the company that sold me the display and got a different one. Still won't sleep when I close the lid. I checked all of the energy settings, reset the PMU and even tried to force sleep with a magnet from another broken iBook. Still no sleep when I close the lid. It will sleep when I choose sleep from the Apple menu (OS Tiger) and when it sits for a while with the lid open, but not when I close the lid. Any thoughts?

My original problem has not been solved. The iBook still won't go to sleep when I close the lid. I have checked out any possible software causes, and have ruled them out. I have checked to make sure no keys were being pressed when I closed the lid. I took a magnet from another iBook top case and ran it down the side of the display to try to force sleep. No effect. I don't have any Firewire or USB devices attached, to that's not it. Apple, this board, PBFixit.com, and my local Apple-affiliated repair center have no idea why I am having this problem. Two display assemblies have experienced this problem. The original display had been destroyed in a drop. Could some internal damage, like maybe to the logic board, result in such a problem? It's odd that I am the only person out there who has had this problem. Weird, to be sure.

  • Does not sleep when I close the lid...

Never encountered this before! I have 1 MacBook that works fine, but bought another today that will not sleep when I close the lid. It does sleep when I select it from the menu, but not when I shut it.
    Any ideas?

Mine recently started doing the same thing. Now everytime I want to go out with my computer I have to pack up the charger, even if I only end up using it for 15 minutes, because the battery is wasted by 2.5 hours.

  • My MBP shuts down or sleeps (?) when I close the lid

    Hi
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I haven't been able to solve it on my own by investigating, asking others og reading this forum.
My MBP from late 2007 has recently started to shut down/sleep (or maybe even "hibernate" - not sure which is the right term) when I close the lid - meaning that when I open it, it *doesn't wake up automatically* like it used to. *I need to push the "on" button and it takes it a while to start up*. It doesn't start up from scratch; it shows the last screen shaded in a light grey tone - and it's takes quite a few seconds to get ready. As far as I recall, it "woke up" automatically before.
I haven't changed my preferences - and they are all set to "never", as my MBP is nerly always connected to the adaptor.
Any clues to what happened and how I can change it? It's really annoying!
    Thanks,
    Carina

    Welcome!
When my MBP started that same behavior, I found that I had accumulated a huge list of wireless networks on my travels. Reviewing the system log, I found my computer was trying to connect to one, a hotel network to which I had connected weeks before and miles away.
Here's how I fixed it (I have 10.5.8, not 10.6, but the fix should be the same):
    1) Open System Preferences and select "Network."
    2) Be sure "Airport" is selected in the left side of that preference pane.
    3) Click the "Advanced" button. If the next screen does not have the "Airport" tab selected, select it. There should be a window with a list of networks.
    4) Use the + and - buttons below to remove any networks you have accumulated that are not needed. Example: on mine, I removed all but two networks--our home network and the one at a local museum where I volunteer.
    5) Once you'd cleaned off the list to the bare necessities, uncheck the option labeled, "Remember any network this computer has joined." This will not prevent you from using other networks on later travels but will prevent them building up and creating problems.
That completely cured my wake-from-sleep problems. and other have said it worked for them, too.

  • Yoga 2 11 Windows closes all my programs when I close the lid

    Lenovo Yoga 2 11
    Model 20332
    Windows 8.1 64-bit
When I close the lid of the tablet/laptop, I expect that Windows will go to sleep and that when I open the computer and login, all of my windows and programs should be open as I had them when I closed the lid. Sometimes, this is the case. But other times, when I open the lid, it's as if I had logged completely out -- no windows are open, and any programs running in the notification area (e.g. Bittorrent Sync) are no longer running.
How do I configure this so that my programs are not closed when I close the lid or otherwise make the computer go to sleep?
    My current Windows settings:
Control Panel > Power Options: Daily Plan
Turn off the display: On battery: 10 minutes, Plugged in: 30 minutes
Put the computer to sleep: On battery: 30 minutes, Plugged in: 1 hour
Allow hybrid sleep: On battery: On, Plugged in: On
Hibernate after: On battery: 120 Minutes, Plugged in: Never
Power and sleep buttons and lid settings:
When I press the power button: On battery: Hibernate, Plugged in: Sleep
When I press the sleep button: On battery: Sleep, Plugged in: Sleep
When I close the lid: On battery: Sleep, Plugged in: Sleep

Did you check the startup setting in Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts" ?

  • Laptop shuts down when I close the lid

I just recently purchased an HP Pavilion x360. It was working fine until HP did an update and now everytime I close the lid, the computer shuts down and has to restart when I open it. I've checked all of the power settings, including the one that allows you to specify what it should do when I close the lid but having found nothing that helps. Any suggestions? Robby

Hi Robby, Welcome to the HP Forums!
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using the forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience in the HP forum, I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I understand that before you did a HP update you were able to close the lid and reopen without Windows restarting, but no longer. You have checked the power management setting and the option for what happens when you close the lid, but no change. I suggest you do a scan for corrupted files. This process will also try to repair any corrupted files it locates.Go to the command prompt and right click on it and run as administratorType sfc /scannow and press enterWait for this to complete and restart your notebook. Windows 8 has a built in troubleshooter you could also try.Press the Windows key + C to open charmsType troubleshoot performance and press enter.Follow the on screen prompts. If that did not help. you can do a restore back to before you installed the update. You also have the optiion to do a Refresh Your PC to Resolve Problems (Windows 8).  To be on the safe side I would backup your personal data first, to ensure no personal data is lost. You could also do a recovery back to factory.  Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8).  You will receive a prompt to backup your personal files to prevent data loss, if you have not done one recently, I  suggetst you do one now.Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 8) With the notebook being a fairly recent purchase, you could also contact HP support for assistance.  They can remotely log onto your system to aid with locating and resolving issues.    Please call HP technical support at 800-474-6836. • My macbook pro won't go to sleep when I close the lid

I've been having this problem for a couple of years now, and it's getting pretty annoying.
I got this MacBook Pro in April of 2011. Otherwise, it works great. It goes to sleep when I go up to the apple menu and select "sleep." BUT, when I close the lid, it stays on. Heaven forbid I don't have it plugged in, because then the battery will be shot! It also won't go to sleep automatically when I leave it for a long time. Yet another potential battery drain.
How do I fix it so that it goes to sleep automatically when I close the lid and when I leave it alone for a while?
In Energy Saver, I have checked all the boxes necessary: "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" "Wake for network access" and "Automatically reduce brightness before display goes to sleep."
Am I missing something here, or does my computer just have a defect?

    I had the same issue.
I used an external monitor but all of a sudden when I closed the lid my Macbook Pro did not go to sleep!
I solved the problem with a SMC reset.
    Try to do it...

  • My mac mac book pro w retina display will not go to sleep when I close the lid or put it to sleep.

My mac mac book pro w retina display will not stay asleep when I close the lid or put it to sleep.
I put the computer in my bag and when I open it again the machine is so hot I can almost not touch it.
I am affraid that the hardware is allready fried.
Also when I press a key to restart after it has been idle for a few minutes it often takes up to a minute to wake back up.
    This machine is bran new..
    What should I do?

    Try a SMC reset:

If no success, then use your warranty and bring it in to the nearest Apple repair facility for rectifying this problem.
    Ciao.

  • MB tiger 10.4.11 won't shut down but just go to sleep when I close the lid

    Hi,
I'm new to this forum but I'm desperate for your help with my Macbook 10.4.11.
Recently it doesn't shut down properly and each time I shut it down thru the green apple, it just doesn't shut down definitely but after some seconds, the screen turns to black but my mouse's light is still on. When I close the lid, the sleep light is on, too.
I've tried many advices like disabling remote facilities, e.g. Bluetooth, but it won't help. I've updated all softwares and even SMC but that won't help either. Did anyone have the same problem like mine and more important, have you had the answer yet??? I'm fed up with pressing the power off button each time.
For more info, I've installed boot camp and windows but after that, I've uninstalled it and reinstalled brand new Mac OS so there's no way that the problem comes from Windows.
Thanks in advance and waiting desperately for your help...

Hi NOTHING SPECIAL, and a warm welcome to the forums!
How much free space is on the Hard Drive?
Have you done any OS or Disk Maintenance?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
See if it does better then after a restart or two.

  • How do I get my lap top to shut down when I close the lid?

I have tried to switch on the function that shuts down my lap top when I close the lid but am either dumb or lazy and gave up too quickly.... any help would be greatly apprecated.

    Thanks Poikkeus
My mac goes to sleep when I close the lid pretty quickly but when I open up the lid it opens up again where I left off.
Some nice person burgled me some time ago and stole my mac so I want to force my mac to close right down so when someone else opens up they are forced to open up in guest.  I can then track my mac without risking them accessing my personal details etc.

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro go to sleep when I close the lid?

All of a sudden, my MacBook Pro has stopped going to sleep when I close the lid. Instead, the indicator light on the front stays on steadily. When I then open the lid, I am asked to log in again, but before I can type anything, the window goes completely black. My only choice at this point has been to hold the power button down long enough to shut the laptop off. Then I wait a minute or so before restarting. Is there a setting I need to check to prevent all of this from happening? I have tried restarting in Safe Mode, then restarting normally, but still the laptop will not go to sleep when I close the lid.

Some process is impeding the sleep function. Since you've tried rebooting and it persists, check and see if Time Machine is hellbent on completing a backup, cause it can have that effect.

  • Keeping it awake when I close the lid

    Hello,
I want to be able to close the lid on my MacBook Pro,
yet still keep the system on, so if I get an email I can hear the alert sound.
Right now when I close the lid, I lose internet connection, so i'm assuming that the system goes to sleepff, or something.. When I open it again, it awakens, but i have to log into my email again.
Can i keep it "on" with internet "on" too, even though the lid is closed?
    if so, how?
    thank you

You can try a product like SleepLess…
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17893
    … or InsomniaX…
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30315
Otherwise, you can go really low tech and do something which I did when I used a PowerBook as a server which was to wedge an eraser between the base and the display. It just propped it open nicely.

  • Satellite A200-AH3 shut down instead of standby when I close the lid

    Hi,
I have a Notebook Satellite A200-AH3. When I bought it Windows Vista was preinstalled (I still have de recovery disc). When I closed the lid the system standby (I mean the monitor turn off as the HD, the cooling fan and everything else). The On/Off light on the laptop turned to a blinking orange light.
Then I opened the lid and Windows prompted me the logon screen. This process only happened when the laptop run on the battery, not when it was plugged. Everything was fine like that.
But I formated the HD to install WIndows XP which I bought because Windows vista seem to be too heavy for my laptop. So I installed Windows XP and all the driver and software found on the Toshiba website. Now when I close the lid, Windows shutdown very rapidly (about5-6 seconds). However it is a real shut down. When I reopen the lid nothing happen.
Then I press the power button and Windows start normally (no screen saying that windows close annormally and no Safe-Mode starting option). Even if I change the setting in the Control Panel/Power Option or in the Toshiba Power Saver Utility and I set them to Standby, it always perform a shut down.
    How do I restablish that?

What Lars tries to say is that your notebook goes into stand by mode as it should the issue could be that the display does not wake up from stand by when you open the lid.
On the Toshiba European driver page there are different A200 series but I didnt find your series.
Looks like this notebook model is not a European series but Toshiba Canadian notebook.
So you would have to visit the Toshiba Canadian page to get the right BIOS and drivers.
As Im not mistaken there should be also an Toshiba Power saver for Win XP.
    Please configure it properly.
In Setup action (power saver tab) you can set the setting what should happen when you close the lid.

  • How do i run an external monitor with my macbook and change settings so that when i close the lid the signal to the monitor is not lost and i can continue using the mac with a mouse and a wireless keyboard?

How do i run an external monitor with my macbook and change settings so that when i close the lid the signal to the monitor is not lost and i can continue using the mac with a mouse and a wireless keyboard?

No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.
