Taking 1080i AVCHD and making a 720p video/project?

So 1080i is a little bit overkill for me, especially since I dont actually own an HDTV or anything so i was just curious as what the workflow would be for going down to 720p?
Can I just make a new 720p sequence and drop the 1080i footage in there and let final cut deal? Or should I render out a new 720p version in compressor (if so how)? Or is there a way to bring it in at 720p during the LOG&TRANSFER process?

You cannot do this via Log and Transfer. You have two choices, either transcode the footage immediately after from 1080i60 to 720p60 and then edit, or edit your sequence as 1080i60 and then transcode.
You can do this in Compressor or you can use JES Deinterlacer. I wrote a tutorial on how to do this using JES and I've also posted a droplet that'll do this conversion for you, into ProRes 422 (LT)
http://tiny.cc/fv47u
Basically there are three important settings
1) Under the encoder pane --> video settings --> frame rate 59.94. I also suggest transcoding into an intermediate codec (like ProRes 422 LT) rather than trying to go from 1080i60 to 720p60 in a production format like h.264.
2) Frame Controls on with Output fields set to Progressive and deinterlacing set to whatever you're willing to wait for.
3) Under Geometry set frame size to 1280x720.

How do I prevent Adobe from taking my jpegs and making them pdf files? I have had to uninstall Adobe to access my photos as jpegs.

I would suggest you change your file associations so that jpgs open in a program other than Acrobat.  Assuming you have a Windows machine, just go to the Start, and search for "file associations" ... it's part of the Control Panel.
Scroll down to the file type jpg, and set it to open with whatever graphic preview or editing program you have that you want to use as the default.  From that point on, when you click on a jpg, it should not open Acrobat and instantly try to convert it to a pdf.

  • 1080i AVCHD and CS4

I have a couple of questions regarding CS5 vs CS4 dealing with AVCHD files.  First, I have an HP DV7 running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, Intel i7 Q 720 /2 1.60GHz laptop with 6GB of ram.  I  have been editing HDV footage with CS4 and have had no issues to speak of.  I am looking at the
Sony  HXR-NX5U NXCAM camcorder.  I understand that the work flow is a bit different and have the Sony PDF outlining the steps.   Below are my questions before I purchase this camera or CS5:
    1. Can CS4 handle this video format well?
    2. Is my computer robust enough to handle this format?
    3. Would things run smoother with CS5?
    4. If I upgrade, any issues with my CS4 projects opening in CS5?
    5. Are there instructions to cleanly uninstall CS4 so I can install CS5?
    Thanks so much,
    Lisa

#2 - if you have at least two 7200rpm hard drives (physical drives, not a partition on one drive) you will be able to edit... albeit slowly
If you only have one hard drive, and an eSata external for video files, you will also be able to edit
Trying to edit with only one drive will likely be a problem

  • Taking multiple shots and making one movie from them

I've searched the forums and can't find the answer....
I've got a video of a school musical that I'm editing. It was shot from several different angles. Is there a way for me to line the two videos up, and then pinpoint somehow which portions I want to use from each? I've tried to split the clips and insert others, but it's very difficult when it's in the middle of a song to get the precision correct.
any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

In iMovie 09, you can use the Cutaway feature. Make sure advanced tools are selected in iMovie Preferences. Drag the second clip on top of the main clip, select Cutaway, and the underlying sound track will continue. [See Tutorial Here|http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/imovie_09stone.html#cutaway%20pip]
Also see the section on the Precision Editor.
However, to use multiple cameras with timecodes and have them easily line up, you need Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro.

  • Project settings for mixing AVCHD and iPhone video

    Hello,
It seems that getting the correct project settings is imporant to Premiere, but what if I would like to mix AVCHD video with iPhone 3GS video?  Which project settings would I select in this case?
    Thank you.

This question aroused my curiosity and I tried mixing 1080i AVCHD and Nokia phone .3gp video on an 1080i AVCHD timeline in PE8 - the 3gp video played fine, the AVCHD video needed the timeline rendered to give a decent quality playback.  I realise that's different from iPhone video, but I'm simply suggesting that it's worth trying, and that project presets don't necessarily mean that only the preset file type will work.
I have to say that this whole project settings thing is a mystery to me.  Why does a 1080i AVCHD preset make a better job of playing back 3gp video from the timeline than it does playing back 1080i AVCHD?  Weird. Why not just handle all that in the background (eg without asking the user for any settings at all, like one NLE here does, or simply setting the timeline to the first clip of the project (optionally) like another one here does?
As for the comment earlier on about background rendering - here (after a day or so) it seems to be not a very useful thing.  Much grinding by the CPU for a very slow result.  To get the timeline to play smoothly it's much quicker to position the work area bar as required and hit "enter".  Also, one has to watch for the new analysis process, which once started seems to create an everlasting CPU intensive process even if you cancel it.  You have to keep a sharp eye on the process manager and see what's consuming CPU cycles (if you don't know already) and kill any apparently rouge Adobe-related processes by hand.  "Bmem" is your friend here, which is about the first thing I install on any PC of mine - badmofo.org/bmem is the site for this excellent freeware app.

        All helps will be appriciated.

    Hi,
Once the user has read permission and able to view the document, there is no possibility to stop this user from taking printout, copying and making screen shots.

  • What is the best Workflow to output 1080p as a 720P video?

    Hi all,
I have DSLR video shot at 1080P.  I knew the final product would need to be 720P which was fine since I wanted to be able to move (dolly, zoom in or out) the full sized 1080p clips in the 720P timeline.
The problem I am seeing is that the video exports much softer than the original 1080P footage.
So if any of you have a good workflow of how you would perform this talk, I would love it if you could share it with me.
Some of the clips I am allowing FCPX to "fit" the 1080P footage to the 720P frame, other clips I am using at the native 1080P size (larger than the 720P timeline) and doing the post production moves (dolly, zoom in, zoom out)
The 720P video will end up on Vimeo.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Matt

    Easiest way:
    Share > Vimeo
on the share dialog ... next to the last line -> uncheck Set size automatically and select HD 720p Video Sharing
If you need access before exporting to vimeo:
Go back out to the Projects pane and with your video selected:
If you want to keep your original 1080 format as well then duplicate the project
in the inspector, select the Properties pane.
at the bottom of the pane is a wrench icon -> click it.
reset your video properties to 720HD (you may have to settle for 30p rate.)
double click your newly resized video
    "Share" > Export as usual

  • Can't Save iMovie 09 Video Project

I tried importing clips from my new Canon Vixia RF-H10 camcorder into iMovie 09. No problem. I created a new video project and dragged clips from events, trimmed clips, added titles and transitions. Smooth as silk. I tried publishing the video project to Media Browser. Done and done. But when I quit iMovie 09 and re-open my video project (which is listed in my "Movies" folder and appears in the Project list in iMovie), my edited clips, titles, and transitions aren't there! I need to begin all over again! What am I doing wrong? (I can't find any "Save" command).

    Hi Richard,
There is no Save command in iMovie '09 - it's supposed to save automatically. However, there have been other reports on the forum about projects not being saved. This happened to me once, but had only a minor impact on my work, thankfully. There must be a particular set of circumstances that sometimes causes iMovie not to save.
Probably all I can offer is to delete (trash) iMovie's preference file. It's found in your user Home>Library>Preferences folder and is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". Close iMovie before doing this. When next opened, iMovie will create a new file with the default settings. You may need to change some settings to suit your own preference. Trashing the file will not damage your Projects or Events but may fix iMovie's odd behaviour.

  • I have a 2008 iMac. Can iPhoto and iMovie process 720p HD videos?

I am shopping for a megazoom camera. They are mostly built for still photos, but also shoot HD videos.. in either 720p or 1080p formats. I have a 2008 iMac. I have not upgraded to Snow Leopard or a more recent version of iLIfe.
Can my version of iPhoto and iMovie process either format of HD?
A guy at the local Apple store said the video files have to be in AVCHD format, but I have found no info to back this up, so he is probably wrong.
A Canon online rep said 720p could be used, because my mac uses a 1080i format.  ??  Something about up-sourcing.
I am eager to buy a camera, but want to be VERY sure I can use at least a 720p HD format.
As I am a computer neophyte, please explain in layman's terms.
    Thanks very much!

iMovie from '08 iMac.. which makes the iMovie # 7.0
Thanks for the advice! I just found this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/7.0/en/15202.html.
As far as I can tell it says 1080i will work with iMovie 7.0,  But I could be wrong.
I think your advice on using 720p is excellent. The camera I am most inclined to buy at the moment is the Panasonic Lumix FZ-100. I think it has optional .. what do I call them.. resolutions? Possibility of shooting in either 720p or 1080i... or maybe not.
A rather rude apple tech support guy I spoke with yesterday.. if I remember correctly, said 720p or 1080i or 1080p.. wouldn't matter.. for '08 imoive.. but this might not be correct. Besides being unpleasant, he didn't explain things very well..
He also said it is best to find a camera that shoots in AVCHD, and that if I didn't find one, I would have to convert the video file to AVCHD.. I am wondering how to do that, and I am wondering if he is correct.
You have a Canon.. I got an email from a Canon rep who says none of the Canon cameras shoots in AVCHD.. maybe this is not a problem? Do you have to convert your video files to AVCHD?
And.. If I have been shooting in 1080i..or 1080p for that matter,  if I understand you correctly, I can process that video in 720p instead? I don't know if there is an option for this in iMovie '08 (which is version 7.. GRRRR.)
This is all too @#$% complicated! I've been doing research for almost a week.. many hours a day.. trying to figure out what camera to buy, and whether or not it is compatible with my mac. I thought I had it figured out.. but maybe not..
If I need to, I'll get the iLife '09.. but have been reading bad reviews of iLife '11, so probably won't get that one.
Besides the Pan. Lumix, I am checking out the Canon SX20 and SX30.. both shoot in 720p.. I think..  If I can convert these to AVCHD easily (or if I don't have to convert them) maybe the Canons are a better choice.
Lastly.. will these videos process with iPhoto? Mostly I just want to put videos on youtube without any fancy editing. I've been doing this with an older but excellent point and shoot Canon (that does not shoot videos in HD), and have had no problems uploading to youtube.
Thanks VERY much for the help!

  • Export to mp4 720p de-interlaced from 1080i AVCHD

How do I export to mp4 720p de-interlaced from 1080i AVCHD footage from a Sony HDR-SR12? The raw source at 1080i looks fine from iMovie 09' but the exported through Quicktime 720p video is baldy jittered. However, the only previous export I have of the same movie is an iMovie 08' version and sadly not what youtube considers HD source material at 960x540 but it was clear of the jaggies.
The previous exports were made with iMovie '08s medium and large to m4v. The export I made of the same edit was to Quicktime via Movie to MPEG-4, 1280x720 5000kbps/sec, framerate current, Key auto, preserve aspect ratio using crop and H.264 options Main, multi-pass.
You can see the results here. http://gallery.mac.com/mpitogo#100281&bgcolor=black&view=grid download it for best results.
iMovie-edit.png is the edited raw source played back in iMovie
iMovie-export.png is the edited and exported 720p movie bad jaggies on motion.
This looks to be a motion related problem the jaggies are not there for slow moving action. Anyone have ideas to exporting 720p without this jitter?
    Thank you in advance!

This has to do with how iMovie 09' handles interlaced footage. The short answer is that it doesn't handle it well. Either de-interlace prior to editing in iMovie or use the 960x540 30p import setting. I know this is the short answer, but it has been quite thoroughly discussed in this forum, so a simple search will provide the long version.
For de-interlacing tools google "JES Deinterlacer". That will get you started.

  • How do you get music from your Itunes to your computer? im making a wedding video on windows movie maker but cant figure out how to get the bridal music off my ipod and onto my pc.

Im making a wedding video and cant figure out how to get the bridal music off my itunes and onto my computer.. Im using the windows movie maker

    Marian,
Let's be clear on one thing here. The manual setting is an iPod setting, not an iTunes one. So, once you've set it to manual (and you appear to have done that correctly), then you can connect it to any number of computers without changing that setting.
"The grey thing occurs on one pc only"
This is the thing that I don't understand, if your iPod is set to manual, then it shouldn't happen on any computer. If you connect the iPod that is set to manual to this pc, and then click on it in the source listing, then you would be looking at the songs on the iPod, and they should not be greyed out. When you connect to the "other pc" under these same circumstances, they are not greyed out?

  • [Solved] After watching several youtube html5 720p videos, Firefox (version 33) display or screen turns black and aero transparency in windows 7 turns opaque.

Hello ! I just want to share something familiar with that black display or screen occurs for some people. When I watch youtube videos, I used to watch them in html5 720p videos (not flash videos, https://www.youtube.com/html5 ). I upgraded firefox to version 33. No black display when I used it. Randomly and after watching several html5 videos on youtube, aero transparency in my windows 7 turns opaque and firefox display goes all black. Firefox doesn't respond at any command. I need to kill his process in task manager in order to close it. When I open firefox again, normal display goes. To relaunch aero transparency in windows 7, I need to restart the service whose name is, I think, "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager". I use windows 7 in french and the service name is "Gestionnaire de sessions de Gestionnaire de fenetrage".
To solve this, I upgraded my graphic driver but this didn't work. I tried to put "layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled" to false in "about:config" menu. No random black display but some html elements turned black for some seconds or definitely when firefox rendered web pages. I tried to uncheck "Use hardware acceleration when available" in options menu. No random black display but html5 720p videos didn't play smoothly.
Then, I chose to watch youtube 720p videos again with flash player and no random black display and html5 720p videos played normally.
Here are my graphic acceleration infos :

I hope this will be useful to solve this problem in future versions or to someone.

This is happening to me too, I don't know if this is an Adobe Flash Player 11.5's bug or it's just my computer. All my browsers, chrome, IE9, Fox, doesn't even load anime videos. I tried reinstalling 11.5 many times, it have no effect but I use IE9 64-bit to run the videos that couldn't run. I waited 25 min for a JW player to load an episode of anime and I'm sick of it.

How do I delete the photo albums on my iPhone 4? These photos, albums and videos are taking up space and besides this, I WANT THEM OUT! I have iTunes on my Windows 7
I can connect the iphone to the computer. i can open iTunes,
I don't know how to delete the photos and the albums that streamed in and otherwise came in and or doubled into albums that i did not create. Videos too.
    i did turn off streaming.
would someone please tell me how....
I've heard that it can be done and then something about syncing...no idea how to sync either....only that when I hook up the cord to the computer, my iPhone 4 dings...
i need basic step by step...and alot of patience! thanks
I have iO7 something, which I'm really not fond of either....any way after the photo/album deleting...I'd like to find out how to get rid of this update

Assuming you are using iTunes 11.1:
Connect your iPhone to your computer.
In iTunes towards the upper right of your screen you will see the name of your iPhone. Click on it (not the eject symbol.
This will open a series of windows with tabs.
    Select the tab for photos.
Untick the ones you do not want on your iPhone and at the bottom right click on Apply.
    They will be removed.

  • NEW KERNEL V47, and a new hope for 720p video play...

thats right people, after matan's strange disappearing, we now have pali getting us new kernels, and his first kernel with loads of new awesome patches is in the extras devels ( v47 ) , you can try it out, same installation method as the old v46  (or v42 from the extras ), and same overclocking method too .
and now he is working on a 720p video playback patch, he already got the 720p media codecs (finally) and many users reported that they are able to play 720p mpeg4 videos on the n900 (this patch isn't in the extras devel version....yet ! ) so now we don't have a hardware problem to play 720p videos, the problem is in gstreamer (video player in the default media player) but thank god, we have MohamadAG to work on that openmedia player so we can finally get 720p video playback .
and if we can play 720p videos, we can shoot them too .
and i can say that after 40 minutes of hard usage of this new kernel my phone seems a lot smoother and abit faster than the old v46 or v42 with the same overclocking settings .
Use Hildon Application Manager or via apt-get
    Step 1 Installation:
In Hildon Application Manager install package: Linux Kernel for power user
    Or via apt-get package: kernel-power-flasher
    Step 2 Multiboot support:
    First see step 1.
Then in Hildon Application Manager install package: Linux Kernel for power user (boot image)
    Or via apt-get package: kernel-power-bootimg
this is not for noobs right now, but it will be soon, and it might become a part of the cssu .

You would need an image editor to edit the images and add a border to the image first before importing them into Final Cut.
