Taking an unlocked iPhone 5S to Mexico

I currently live in Mexico and need a new phone.  I've had my dad pick up an unlocked iPhone 5S sim free from the Apple Store.  He sent me the receipt, and it does list the iPhone as unlocked.  I have a couple of questions:
If I get a GSM nano sim from my local carrier (Telcel) and put it in the phone, I should be able to use the phone with no issues here, correct?  I opted not to get the T Mobile version because I was worried it would effect me being able to activate the phone here in Mexico.  I want the first sim I put in to be from Telcel to avoid any issues.
When I travel to the US, can I get a get a T Mobile nano sim and switch out the sim from my Mexican carrier without causing issues?  I would love to use a US sim while I'm there so that I have a phone without having to pay international roaming, but I want to make sure I will be able to put my Telcel sim back in with no issues once I get back to Mexico.
Hope that makes sense.

That is most likely oing to be an unlocked iPhone it was purchased from an Apple store.
The sim-free designation is often used by non-Apple sellers who are selling iPhones that are unlocked until the first sim is inserted and they are activated.  Then they are locked to that carrier.  But if your dad bought this from Apple it should be ok.
And you are in the position of he warranty not being a major issue since you can just send it to your dad if that becomes necessary.
Hope this new iPhone works well for you.

  • Unlocked iphone 4 in mexico

    Hi community,
I recently arrived in Mexico and am trying to use my unloked iPhone 4 (originally AT&T) at iOS 6.1.3
Calls and text messages work fine, but unfortunately, I can't receive any data.
I tried the two local providers Telcel and Movistar. Both times the operator told me that the data packages for those lines would be activated.
The signal bars are there and also the "3G" symbol is there, however, when I try to connect to mail or Safari I get an error that I am not connected to mobile data providers.
Any ideas where that may come from?
I used the same device in many other countries around the globe and it always worked with local SIm cards.
switching on & off data roaming doesn't help either...
    Many thanks for your help!

OK, I found the problem myself:
My company is using a Mobileiron server & configuration. The userprofile and setting blocked the access to the mobile network. after deleting & re-installing them it worked!

  • Can I buy an unlocked iPhone 4S in Canada and use it in Mexico?

    Hi!
I'm currently in Canada but I'll be traveling back to Mexico in a few days, but I just wanted to know if I can use an unlocked iPhone 4S in mexico with carriers like Telcel, Iusacell and Movistar. It's urgent
    Thanks

You can pay full retail now and then unlock with Verizon's permission later. It's only for international use if it's like the 4s. Only atat has unlocked phones from apple because it's gsm not CDMA. Is straight talk gsm or is it CDMA?  I am not an expert.

ONLY the carrier to which it is locked can unlock it.
Contact that carrier and ask if they offer this service and if you qualify

  • The unlocked iPhone 6 version, will work well in Mexico right away after buying it?

The unlocked iPhone 6 version, will work well in Mexico right away after buying it? Or do I have to wait a few months? The unlocked version, not the T-mobile contract-free.

The T-Mobile phone that is for sale in the US is not "Unlocked", but it is instead Contract Free.
There is no such thing as a factory unlocked phone and the phone is either unlocked or contract free.  An unlocked phone needs to be purchased directly from Apple and will remain unlocked whatever you do, but at present Apple is not selling and has not released the unlocked version of the iPhone 6 and 6+.
A contract free phone differs in that it will lock to the first sim card that you put in it, however, the T-Mobile contract free phone should work in India if you take out the T-Mobile sim card first before activating it and just activate it with your Indian sim card.
Remember though that although the phone will work in India you will not get 4G/LTE due to the frequency differences between the US and India and you will have no warranty cover for your phone in India - iPhone warranty is NOT international and is for the country of purchase only, so you will have to get back on a plane and fly to the US with the phone if you have problems.

  • Unlocked Australian iPhone 4s in Mexico

    Dear Apple community
I recently bought an unlocked iPhone 4s as a gift for a Russian friend who is working in Mexico. I was told that the phone had to be modified to allow the use of a Mexican sim card at a cost of U$200. The reason I bought an unlocked phone was so that she wouldn't have this problem.
Will she have similar problems with every country she goes to, including Russia?
    Thanks,
    Qavion

To unlock any iPhone, you have to contact the network to which the phone is locked.
If your phone was purchased unlocked from Apple, or has been unlocked officially via iTunes through the mobile network it was locked to, updating the version of iOS will not re-lock it.
If you hacked (jailbroke) your phone to unlock it, then you are stuck, and we cannot help you here.

The model number is NOT a reliable indicator of whether or not the phone is locked. The only exception might be models originating in countries where ALL iPhones are unlocked, or where the carriers do not offer unlocking and Apple does not sell unlocked phones (e.g. India and Japan respectively).

The normal process is to request the unlock with the carrier.  They process it and pass it on to Apple to be applied to the Apple's iPhone database.  The carrier would then inform you when Apple has provisioned the unlock, and you would restore your iPhone as a new device in iTunes to apply the unlock (you would get a message at the end of that restore as new in iTunes indicating the unlock was successfully applied).  You could then restore your iPhone from backup to get everything back as it was.
However, for some carriers, you seem to beed to complete the iTunes restore from within the country where they provide service.  Regardless, have you tried restoring as new in iTunes to see if it processes any provisioned unlock request?  Just be sure to backup the iPhone first, before restoring as new.

  • Taking a new unlocked iPhone from Australia to the USA

    Hi all,
A thorough search of the net has failed to answer this question and I'm hoping you can help. There are a few threads that explore using an unlocked Aus iPhone in the USA but they all seem to deal with phones unlocked from a carrier.
I have bought a new factory unlocked iPhone from Apple Australia. If I insert a local SIM (like a Vodaphone) to get the phone operating in Australia do I need to unlock it to use it in the USA or does it stay unlocked? I would like to remove the Vodaphone SIM and use an American network while I am there.
    Thanks,
    Shannon

No, if it's officially unlocked by the carrier or factory-unlocked from the Apple Store, it will work with an AT&T SIM card here in the US. But, apparently there are some issues with getting pre-paid SIMs from AT&T, so check into that (the only other GSM network in the US is T-mobile, and their 3G network is not compatible with the iPhone, so you're stuck sorting out the SIM issues with AT&T or using EDGE-only on T-mobile.
Also, be aware that iPhone warranty service is only provided in the country of purchase.

  • Unlocked iPhone 6 Plus in US

    Hi everyone,
I'm a mexican user of iPhones, and I really want to buy an iPhone 6 Plus in the US, because here, it's really expensive, about 1.5 times the US price, and that's the reason I want to know the price of an unlocked iPhone, without any contract or SIM from the US, because I couldn't use it in Mexico. Does Apple started selling unlocked iPhone 6 Plus? I'm going to the US on December, and I need to know if the Apple Store can sell me an unlocked iPhone.
Thanks for taking time reading this

It will work but it may not work on 4G/LTE. The warranty will not be valid as it is not international. You will have to return to the US for service.
Only the T-Mobile iPhone 6 Plus purchased from an Apple Store is unlocked.

  • Can I activate an unlocked iPhone 6 without a sim card?

My iPhone 4s was stolen in Mexico and according to my find my iPhone app, its offline. I am assuming I will never see it again. I am currently in the USA but am originally from Australia. I will be in the States until mid February. I kind of need a phone and was thinking of just purchasing an unlocked iPhone 6 whilst in the States. A lot of retail stores don't seem to sell unlocked phones, but I see I can purchase one from the apple store. I was just wondering if I purchased an unlocked iPhone 6 from the apple store with no sim card, would I be able to activate it without a sim? I have my old phone backed up on my laptop so I am hoping just to restore it to my new phone. Then I plan to use the phone with no sim until I arrive back home in Australia where I can purchase a sim with my home carrier and transfer my number back. Am I able to do this? I only intend to use my phone when connected to Wi-Fi. Any help is great

I'm not sure if it comes with a carrier. It was given to me by my travel agent but didn't really intend to use it. It says JT - Jersey Telecom (not sure what that means?). I have to activate the sim on a website called www.rechargeminutes.com. But looking at the sim, I am unsure if it would fit in an iPhone 6 because I was reading that they are different sizes?

Hi I want to buy an unlocked iPhone 5 in the Middle East. I want to know if I will be able to use my iPhone and all its applications when we go back to live in the US for long term.
    Thank you

Apple Online Store sells unlocked iPhone in the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium (French, Dutch), Brazil, Canada (English, French), China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong (English, Chinese), Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland (French, German), Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and United States.
You can probably be absolutely sure any other source will be carrier locked
It also appears that only Zain offer unlocking (of all the ME carriers )  in Jordan and Bahrain
A ME iPhone 5  ( A1429 GSM )will not  work on US LTE when you return
