Taking backup in windows 7 using tape drive

In Windows XP I was using ntbakup utility for taking data backup on backup tape .I have upgraded my machine to windows 7 now I am not able to take backup on tape drive. Please suggest solution so that I will be able to take backup on backup tape in windows
7.

Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 platform only support backup to dvd, network share or hdd.
To use a tape library to backup your data you'll need to use another tool like Symantec Backup Exec, Arc Serv Backup or any other.

  • Can I use tape drive for backup with win 2012 OS & Sybase database?

I have installed enhancement package 6 for SAP ERP 6.0 with OS windows 2012 and database sybase ASE(15.7.050). I am facing problem while taking database backup on tape drive. I want to know how to initialize tape drive in case of sybase DB and is it possible to take back-up on same. I failed to schedule backup from DB13 so now I am doing that activity by command line. So please help me to solve these issues.
Here I am attaching some files related with backup commands that presently I am using. My SAP system ID is DQS.

That output actually looks pretty good, it was dumping to the tape drive, it just ran out of tape because the drive apparently doesn't automatically detect when it is reaching the end.
For the next step, try adding a CAPACITY parameter to your dump command as discussed at these places in the documentation.
Specifying tape capacity for dump commands
Set the Maximum Capacity for a Tape Drive
Your output above shows it was able to dump 87565594 KB before it ran out of tape,
so lets be a little conservative and try
dump database DQS to TAPE1 with   capacity = 87000000, init
    go
When the dump reaches that point, ASE should prompt you to pop in another new tape
and then issue the sp_volchanged procedure from a second session (it will tell you what parameters to use for sp_volchanged).
Note: once we get the dump working successfully, we can then create a logical dump device that would store the capacity value, and create a full dump configuration so you gain all the new functionality like dump history, etc.

  • Backup strategy with no tape drives/library

Hi, I am new into the job of sys admin, so we recently setup a system with running solaris 10 and with its storage as a NetApp, but we do not have yet a library or tape drive attached to it.
So how can I approach this problem? Can I setup a LUN on NetApp and copy all important stuff to that LUN?
    FR

For the oracle backup, oracle should have comands to dump or export the database to a file, and that file could be backed up. Alternately, there are problably options to put the database in read-only mode, so that you can back up the database files without worrying that they will be changed during the backup.
For other files, if you are using zfs snapshots, you could back up the zfs snapshots even if the original file is still open.
You might also want to look at the rysnc command- that should let you back up only files that have differ between the source and destination (i.e. you could do differential backups.) So maybe you could a monthly full backup with tar to NAS or SAN, a weekly rsync incremental backup, and daily zfs snapshot that is kept for a week.

  • TM backup: can I use two drives to back up data on two other drives?

    Hi to all!
    I have with me a 1 TB/ Thunderbolt EHD [external hard drive], a Lacie 2 TB/FW, EHD, a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD, a Seagate 3 TB/ 2 USB, EHD and [to be purchased] a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD.
I mainly use my Mac for making HD videos using FCPX.
I am planning to use these drives in the following manner as indicated by the table below:
    Drive:
    a
    1 TB,
    Thunderbolt,
    Buffalo
    b
    2 TB/ FW
    LaCie
    c
    2 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate
    d
    3 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate
    e
    2 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate backup

    Macintosh HD
    Partitions

    2

    USAGE:
    editing videos, one
    active project at a time
    mainly for camera
    archives, music files,
    FCP events, projects
    and exported movies
    same as the LaCie,
    as a backup of data
    intend to have 2
    partitions of 1.5 TB each;
    one partition for personal
    data and the other partition
to back up data on the
    Thunderbolt [current project]
    intend to use this for
    TM back up of my
    Mac's internal HD
    applications, documents etc.
    backed up by:
    one partition of 'd'
    by the 2 TB Seagate
    backup 'e'
I would like to know whether I could do these things:
Can I use the TM backup feature in this manner of using 2 separate drive/partition [e/d] to back up data on 2 other drives [f and a]?
Further, I am manually copying files from 'b' drive to 'c' drive; without incurring further expense, can I ensure that whatever I write onto the LaCie [b] gets copied to the 'c' drive automatically?
Any thoughts, suggestions and instructions in these matters are welcome.

    3 TB/USB
    [Seagate]
    e

    USAGE:
    scratch disk
    [planning to have
    only one active
    project at a time]
    camera footage
    FCPX events, projects
    and completed movies
    Same as the LaCie,
    as it's backup
    To be used as TM
    backup for my Mac's
    internal and also to
    the scratch disk.
    Planning to have it in
    2 partitions: to have
    a 'secondary' copy of
    my Mac's IHD on one
    partition and to have
    personal 'net retrievable'
    data on the other partition.
    'MY
    OBSERVATIONS'
    my projects are usually
    less than 10 minutes
    and hence I trust that
work would be fast and in
    case of drive failure, I
    would be losing only
    one project.
    I am importing camera footage
    primarily into this drive and
    being FW, data transfer is
    fast.
    Am manually copying
    files from the LaCie
    onto this.
    This drive is not a
    brand new one, but
    has been given to me
    by the company's
    agent as a replacement
to my earlier 2 TB drive
    which had failed.Hope
    this also will not fail!
    Because of the 'uncertain'
    performance of the
    3 TB Seagate, I intend
to have a copy of my
    Mac's IHD in one
partition. I intend to place only
    such data upon the other
partition that I will not be
    greatly affected should the
    drive fail.
If you can analyse this plan and give your insight upon this matter, I will be immensely happy.
Further, if this proposed use of the 3 TB Seagate is okay with you, I need to know how to remove the Thunderbolt from doing it's temporary role of TM backup and how to coronate the 3TB Seagate as its successor.
FYI, I would be switching off TM from functioning whenever I am editing video; I would be switching it on only after a full editing session.
Another question on my mind is this: do I need to partition the drive 'e' at all?

I have tried to back up windows 7 back up on external drive. After completing 90% back up i got error 0x8100002f. When i view the details of skipped files there are some files skipped from document, user data as these file are corrupted. I have tried
to cut paste these files on same external drive as these files are important. But still i am getting same message with details as these files are existed on target location. I want to retain these files and complete the back up. Please guide how i can repair
these files. These files are working normally but while back up it is showing as corrupted.

    Hi,
Before moving on, I want to confirm whether you can see these
    files in the external drive?
If we can, please try to open it? Could they be opened?
If it is corrupted, please delete the files and recopy them to the target location.
And if it is not the case, does the computer has an NVIDIA USB Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) chipset, and has at least 4 GB of RAM?
If yes, please refer to the scenario 3 in the following kb.

  • How to format and backup Mac & Windows to external drive

I have a LaCie 1 T external drive.  I want to use it to backup both my Mac partition and my Windows 7 partition.  The Windows 7 partition was created using Bootcamp.  I  formatted the drive with exfat from within Lion and then divided the drive into two equal partitions, one for Mac and one for PC. I tried to use Time Machine to back up the Mac data and it seemed to blow away the Mac partition which is no longer visible to Finder and consequently cannot be backed up to. I haven't tried to do anything about backing up the Windows 7 partition. As an aside, one online source I saw said I need to do this setup routine of the external drive from within Windows 7 in order for the drive to be accessible to both operating systems?
    Thanks for any help,

You need to find a Windows backup software that will work with Apple's Bootcamp partition.
On a Mac, Apple does a hack to "fool" Windows into thinking it's on a PC with a Master Boot Record Partition map.
Mac's can only boot from a GUID Partiton map, so there is a hybid MBR installed into the Bootcamp partiton when you set it up.
Traditional Windows backup software won't work when you try to restore Windows because it expects to be a PC with a MBR and runs Linux to restore Windows with. (a Mac can run Linux if Linux knows it's talking to a GUID)
And You can only image backup Windows, not make it a bootable copy on a external drive like you can do with OS X.
So the external drive needs to be formatted with a GUID Partition map and 2 partitions.
1: OS x Extended (J) so you can use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone Lion to it.
2: exFAT so you can save the Windows image file to it.
Now you need to find software that will run in OS X, take the Windows image of the Bootcamp partiton and restore it. There used to be great free software that did this, but since Lion rolled around a lot of good software wsn't updated anymore, guess people figured Apple is closing up like iPads and didn't see the sense in it.

  • Previously windows used external drive to be used in mac (and windows)

i´ve just bought a macbook and planned to use a couple of external drives i previously used on my pc with time machine and whatnot. only it seems they are write-protected in mac os, so they can´t be used as back-up drives. do i have to format them again using mac, or do it in windows, or is there a way around this? and can it be done so both mac and windows recognizes it as writable?
    thanks

    Dave Sawyer wrote:
They're probably formatted NTFS, which Mac OS X can read but not write. There are third-party NTFS drivers, one open-source and one commercial, but you can just reformat the drive as FAT32 (MS-DOS format in Disk Utility) and it will work just fine with both your Mac and Windows systems.
If the OPs intent is to use it with Time Machine, the external drive needs to be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) via Disk Utility. I believe there is a Windows app that permits viewing of HFS+ drives. Since you have a 'couple' of external HDDs, it's probably best to use a dedicated HDD just for TM backups.

  • Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive Software recommendations

    Hi all.
I have an old Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive that I keep around to access the old tapes. Moving from computer to computer I eventually started using TimeMachine for backup to SATA Externals. I moved important stuff off of the tapes to get faster access to the stuff I backed up.
I am running out of space again and decided I am going to build or buy some type of NAS box. This will involve buying some more drives ultimately and maybe some new backup software that will run off of a server. I am thinking of just using Time Machine over a network but I haven't decided yet.
Unfortunately while cleaning some drives and getting rid of old software and documents to make more space for new stuff I wiped a system disk that was on the G4 this was running on. The Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive came with included software when I bought it. I am pretty sure it was some light edition of Retrospect but I can't recall. I have the old G4 (not in service minus drives), a Power Mac G5, an iMac, and Mac Pro Tower.
Here is my delema. I want to get the VXA working again as I still have some files on there that I never went through. I would also like to use it for as long as it will run as a redundant backup system. I have run out of space on all the drives I currently have and will most likely just buy an external harddrive but until I get the more expensive NAS up and running I would like to avoid spending any unnecessary funds. Since I can't locate the cd with the driver and software I looked on their site. Retrospect has changed hands several times and there is no availble downloads other than the Utility. Oddly enough I found my CD storage box and I have every other OS, Utility, Script, etc that I have ever used so I am thinking it's lost or fell out of the box during a move.
Can anyone recommend some very inexpensive software that will backup (and control) the tape drive? I am willing to use open source/free alternatives or to buy used software. I thought about an old copy of Retrospect but I can find any. The new stuff looks great but since the minimum will require slapping down about a bill ($100) I figured that I should just use that money to buy an external in the next couple of days while I sort out the bigger more robust NAS plan. I also looked for BRUs lite software but they don't sell it anymore.
BRU is a good product but it's out of the budget for now at least until I figure out the NAS.
I just need some creative thinkers to make some suggestions that I might be able to employ so I can start cleaning off some of the other drives because I plan to use the SATA I, II, and III drives I have to put in the NAS. I will probably use PCIe cards or firewire/usb host cards to ulitize all the drives. You might be wondering why I want to save so much data and it's really simple. I have asset libaries and client work product which I often need to go back to either because they want some element re-done in a fresh way or because I can actually re-use some work product on new projects for other clients. I often take mockups and demos and re-cycle them by submitting them on new projects so I can offer more than one choice to clients during demo submissions.
    Anyone got any ideas?

    Hi Ivan,
Thanks for taking the time to link to this. It will probably help someone else. Yes you are correct. I believe that it is the full installer. I made this post then went and looked at the box I had. It's Retrospect Express. I probably should have been clearer on that. I believe Retrospect Express is a light edition.
I did try that installer and it doesn't look like the version I was using. For some reason I am thinking it was version 4.x or 5.x Another issue is that the version you linked to required a license. I don't recall if the version I had needed one but if it did I would have kept it with the disk in a disk box I have. It's not in the box.
I also contacted Retrospect and sent them the license and asked if they could help or make a suggestion. Their reply was "The program is not supported anymore and due to change of hands we no longer have records regarding your registration. Please buy the new product"
Another issue is that I had someone help me set it up when I first started using it. I needed to get it up and running before I actually had the time to read the documentation. Dantz' first manual was probably the most confusing manual I have ever read. (Or as my daughter would say "ever, ever, ever, ever" kind of like the way Taylor Swift sings it). ;-)
I suppose I may have to start looking for someone on Craigslist who has an old retired copy they would be willing to sell me. Then maybe I could use the version you linked to. All I need is the ability to control the tape. Read/Write/Erase. I will even forgo the index rebuilding feature for when an index get corrupted until I figure out my NAS box.

What is more important to you, then choose. It's simple: tape is more reliable and faster drives. At a cost of not very high volumes, they are about the same per megabyte. It - http://www.allbackup.ru/articles/article6.html - is more less actually.

  • MS SQL 2005 not  recognize the tape drive?

I have a SQL 2005 Server (SP1) running on Windows 2003 server machine. Now windows can detect the tape drive attached to the system as 'HP StorageWorks DLT VS160'. Even 'ntbackup' detects it and is able to backup data to the tape drive. However, SQL Server is unable to detect the tape drive. The tape does not show up in the Backup Devices in Server Objects and hence I'm unable to take backups directly to the tape via SQL Server. How do I get SQL 2005 to recognize the tape drive?

    Hi,
I dont know if you trying to install new tape drive or old.
If its new, thn after installing Tape driver restart your server(tape should be online with correct light indication).
Then goto mycomputer->properties and under removable drives it should show your tape drives with name.
Second you can download the campatible HP tool from HP website, install and run.
It will tell you almost everything about your drives and you can upgrade tape firmware too.
Make sure you stop SAP service before running HP tool as it may restart your server too with blue screen or dump.
So be very sure about compatibility of the tool.
