Taking CS6 Out For A Spin

For those of you who are jumping into the deep end with CS6 (or even just stepping into the water at the shallow end), here's a couple of tips to get you started in the right direction:
Launch CS6 with the Shift and Alt keys held down until the welcome screen appears.  This resets the plug-in cache and your preferences.  It shouldn't happen, but if CS6 picks up any of your CS-earlier prefs or plug-in caches, it could make your first experience with CS6 unhappy.
Once you've launched CS6, go to Edit | Preferences | Media and clean the media cache.  That will get rid of media cache files and media cache database entries that aren't valid any more.  AAMOF, if you still have CSNot6 on your system, it'd be a good idea to clean the cache there, too.
If you have fancy folder-dependent HD video files like AVCHD, some DSLR footage, DVCProHD, XDCAM, etc., it's probably a good idea to delete any media cache files that were generated by earlier versions of Premiere Pro.  (Heck, for the DSLR footage, go ahead delete the cache files even if they don't have a fancy folder structure.)  That will let CS6 generate new cache files if and when you load old projects or import old projects into CS6, or if you re-use that footage in a new CS6 project.  Here's a list of the cache file extensions that get created on my system -- YMMV: pek|pk|pkf|cfa|xmp|xmpses|mpgindex|qtindex

am looking to install cs6 (when my disks arrive), alongside vegas pro. is there any likelyhood of codec or other problems
I wouldn't expect any conflicts, but I don't use Vegas, so I can't say for sure if there will be any problems.  If you decide to be the guinea pig, please let us know what you find out.

  • Taking Snow Leopard for a spin with CS4 . . .

    Back in September I purchased the Snow Leopard install DVD to use it's Drive Setup app to perform more reliable SATA hard drive partitioning on my '07 Mac Pro, before I re-installed Tiger, from the machine's OEM install DVD.
    Over the weekend, I installed Snow Leopard on my external FireWire drive, connected to my Mac Pro.  I used the migration tools to get all of my apps and settings onto my new installation of Snow Leopard.  I ran the OS updates.  The latest update appears to be Mac OS 10.6.2.  Everything seems to be as stable as in Tiger 10.4.11.  Rosetta runs my MS Word X app and my Retrospect Client 5.0.540 just fine in Snow Leopard.
    The only problem I have with Snow Leopard is the default gamma setting of it's software display driver, when running my two Graphite 17" Apple Studio Displays.  It is so bright, my CRT displays' manual Brightness and Contrast controls cannot bring the display into a controllable range for calibration.  Even when I use System Preferences to set the Gamma from 2.2 to 1.8 and the Color Temperature to 6500. This may be my only obstacle to moving up to Snow Leopard, from Tiger, for now.  I guess Apple's LCD Cinema Displays don't have the manual Brightness and Contrast control limitations that my CRTs have.
    Photoshop CS4 seems to open and display image files a little faster under Snow Leopard.  InDesign CS3 is stable in this OS.  If I were to permanently upgrade to Snow Leopard, I would clean install the OS and manually re-install my Adobe Apps instead of using Apple's migration tools.  A permament migration to Snow Leopard may require my investment in newer display technology.

    The gamma issue seems to be a sticking point for a lot of people. I have a new 23" HD wide screen LCD monitor and I can adjust it so that the brightness is just where I want it.
    Personally I like what they've done with stacks so that my dock isn't nearly as cluttered as it used to be, even with Leopard. That and the seven gigs of space it doesn't take that 10.5 did for the first 24 hours I owned my MacBook Pro were enough to sell me on Snow Leopard.
    Photoshop doesn't really look any different than it did on my mini with 10.5 though.

    If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
    For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
    If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

    I've been taking screen shots for years and opening them from my desktiop. Suddenly, today, I've lost the ability to open them. I can right click on the picture and do "quicklook", but that's it. They just won't open.
    Similary, if I scan an image and save it as a PDF file in pictures, I'm suddenly not able to open it either!
    Why?

    Move the com.apple.screencapture.plist file out of /username/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, log out and back in, and try again.
    BTW, use the default 10 point setting for text. Your choice just wastes screen space.

    Ipod Touch 4th generation 32G not turning on, not charging.
    I have used multiple cords on both computer USB and wall USB converters. I let it sit there for over 20 min with each attempt.
    It is not being detected by Itunes or my Windows 7 64bit OS. I have tried all 4 of my USB ports (both USB 2.0 and 3.0), with 3 different chargers.
    Holding home and power button will not reset.
    Tried taking it out of "DFU" mode but Itunes won't detect it, I didn't think that would work anyway.
    NO DAMAGE, I have been very careful with it, aside from a few minor scratches. (that you can't even see unless the light reflects them)
    My Itunes is up to date, as is my OS.
    All I'm getting is a blank black screen. It has been working fine on this computer before. I have no idea what could have happened. I'm at my wits end here.

    I have some suggestions. But first, you realize that you have some redundant indexes, right? You have an index on account(account_name) and also account(account_name, account_id), and also account_history(invoice_id) and account_history(invoice_id, adjustment_id). No matter, I will suggest some new composite indexes.
    Also, you do not need two lines for these conditions:
    and round(a.account_balance, 2) > 0
    AND a.account_balance > 0
    You can just use: and a.account_balance >= 0.005
    So the formatted query isselect a.account_id,
           round(a.account_balance, 2) account_balance,
           nvl(ah.invoice_id, ah.adjustment_id) transaction_id,
           to_char(ah.effective_start_date, 'DD-MON-YYYY') transaction_date,
           to_char(nvl(i.payment_due_date, to_date('30-12-9999', 'dd-mm-yyyy')),
                   'DD-MON-YYYY') due_date,
           ah.current_balance - ah.previous_balance amount,
           decode(ah.invoice_id, null, 'A', 'I') transaction_type
      from account a, account_history ah, invoice i
    where a.account_id = ah.account_id
       and a.account_type_id = 1000002
       and (ah.invoice_id is not null or ah.adjustment_id is not null)
       and ah.CURRENT_BALANCE > ah.previous_balance
       and ah.invoice_id = i.invoice_id(+)
       AND a.account_balance >= .005
    order by a.account_id, ah.effective_start_date desc;You will probably want to select:
    1. From ACCOUNT first (your smaller table), for which you supply a literal on account_type_id. That should limit the accounts retrieved from ACCOUNT_HISTORY
    2. From ACCOUNT_HISTORY. We want to limit the records as much as possible on this table because of the outer join.
    3. INVOICE we want to access last because it seems to be least restricted, it is the biggest, and it has the outer join condition so it will manufacture rows to match as many rows as come back from account_history.
    Try the query above after creating the following composite indexes. The order of the columns is important:create index account_composite_i on account(account_type_id, account_balance, account_id);
    create index acct_history_comp_i on account_history(account_id, invoice_id, adjustment_id, current_balance, previous_balance, effective_start_date);
    create index invoice_composite_i on invoice(invoice_id, payment_due_date);All the columns used in the where clause will be indexed, in a logical order suited to the needs of the query. Plus each selected column is indexed as well so that we should not need to touch the tables at all to satisfy the query.
    Try the query after creating these indexes.
    A final suggestion is to try larger sort and hash area sizes and a manual workarea policy.alter session set workarea_size_policy = manual;
    alter session set sort_area_size = 2147483647;
    alter session set hash_area_size = 2147483647;

    Just power off the machine(s). Shut them down. Migration Assistant gets 'stuck' sometimes - best way to migrate really isn't over Firewire, though it will certainly work, but with both machines hardwired via Ethernet to the same router. You can use a TM backup, too, of course, provided that it's recent. Which is the best? Your choice. I've done it both ways and have a preference for MA, but TM restore can be a bit faster and less quarrelsome.
