Taking digital photos off my MacPro

I want to back up the actual digital images as images, not as an iPhoto Library. The "Media" option on my computer has disappeared (OSX 10.7.5) so I cannot easily find them as I used to be able to do. Can someone point me to a specific place on my drive where I ?

You can still do that, but you'll trash your iPhoto Library if you do.
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed...

  • Taking my photos off

Sorry if this has been said before, this website's giving me a hassle and iTunes isn't helping me.I updated iTunes a while ago,and I thought it was going to be some small change or something, but it ended up taking me two hours to download it and everything was different.I found out how to put photos back onto my iPod,but now I can't find any way to take them off.The only option iTunes will give me is to sync more photos on.
    Help?

Either turn off Sync photos or of you want to change the pix on the iPod, select a different folder or add/remove from the folder you have already selected.

How do you get photos off a digital camera and videos off a camcorder onto the iPad air?

You can use the camera connection kit.

If your camera has an SD card
or the lightening to USB for your videos

(might also work for your camera)
The photo part is rather self-explanatory. as long as your photos are in the right format and with the right naming convention they should import right over. The video may be a bit more tricky. So you may want to do some more research and make sure your camera records a format the iPad will import and whether or not you need an app such as iMovie

  • Backwards sync??? Taking pre-synced photos off iPhone

Long story short, I have a few hundred pics from my PC synced to my iPhone, formatted my HDD, didn't back up photos. D'oh! Does anybody know ANY WAY of taking the photos that were previousely synced from the PC (i.e. NOT shot from the iPhone's camera) and putting them back on the PC? My backup CD for photos is like a year old.
I know Apple's products aren't designed to do simple things like this, which is why iPhone is the only Apple product I have, but I know there are also usually ways to get around it. I remember a friend found a way to get his music off of his iPod because he lost everything on his PC. This is the same deal, only replace iPdo with iPhone and music with photos. Thanks guys

The following may be what you've already tried, but just in case it's not -- or even if it is, there may be a step or option missed:  The quote below is from http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4236
To delete synced photos and videos from your device
In iTunes, click the Device button in the upper right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper-right corner first.)
Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
Note: To delete all synced photos, deselect "Sync Photos from" and, when asked, click "Remove photos."
    Click Apply.
To delete Camera Roll photos and videos from your device
There are two methods to delete items from the Camera Roll:
Import the Camera Roll to your computer and choose to delete items after import.
Delete photos and videos from your device manually:
Open the Photos application and open the Camera Roll.
    Tap the Action button.
Tap each photo to select it.
    Tap the Delete button.
Note: For photos and videos you want to save, import them to your computer before deleting them from the Camera Roll

  • Digital photo frame question

There is no specific thread for digital photo frames that I could see, so I'm posting here and if you want to move it, tha'ts fine...
I didn't buy this product at Best Buy, I bought it on Amazon and in retrospect I should have bought it at Best Buy. But you guys sell the same product and I have gotten some awesome help here before on other items, so I thought it might be worth asking you.
I bought a HP df1010p1 Digital Picture Frame, and after 4 months I am just getting a blank white screen on it. I've tried everything I can think of (I am tech savvy) and I can't get it to work. HP is totally giving me the run around on this even though it says in the book it has a year warranty.
I loved this frame and am wondering if it's even fixable, I would appreciate any input. It was pretty spendy and I hate to have to buy another one. It won't be an HP though, that's for sure. I was thinking of taking it apart and seeing if there was anything I could fix inside.
I have tried: different plugins, different media cards, making sure the cards work on my computer, obvuously turning it off and on a bunch of times, blowing the card slot out with air...
Any advice would be appreciated! and thanks in advance.

    Hello tweetybird53,
Thanks very much for purchasing the HP Digital Photo Frame.  I regret that you are having some product and support challenges.  Please email me with your HP case number or your product number, serial number and contact information so that we can get your issue resolved quickly.
The answer to the question, "Is there an HP service depot near where you live that you can take it there?" is no.  Currently, customers can not drop off products at an HP service center.  There is a process to follow that entails mailing in the product if it is coded for repair.  In some cases, the defective product is simply replaced.
I look forward to assisting tweetybird53.

Canon DPP is Canon provided application for desktop/laptop computers and they don't have a version for any tablets as far as I'm aware (not even iOS or Android versions).
But there are other photo editing programs that would work.  I have an iPad.  While Apple has their own photo software (which isn't going to work on a Windows tablet) Adobe has an app called PS Touch.
PS Touch isn't nearly as full featured as Photoshop.  It limits the image resolution (it resizes any images that you import to it so they don't exceed the max resolution) but it does have most of the commonly used adjustments.  So if a person were just trying to get something out, it works in a pinch.
One other catch is that PS Touch can't deal with RAW images... so it's JPEG only.  But I can import JPEGs off the card into the iPad and then edit them -- not as well as I can if they're on a regular computer, but this is what I'ved when I'm away for a weekend with my camera.

Is there a phone number to call Adobe.  I go around an endless loop pressing their contact info tabs?  Maybe someone at this sight can help. I am new to digital photo - I have been a B&W film photographer for many years. I have a problem with a Macbook Air.  It was working fine - I was using LR and a message came on the screen that said something like the memory was dangerously low.  I stopped and tried to delete LR files.  I couldn't do it.  I closed the program and tried reopening and got the message that there is not enough memory available to open LR.  I contacted Apple.  They spent a half hour on the phone with me and eventually told me they didn't know how to help. The tech said that LR had gobbled up all the memory and said I should contact Adobe and ask where and how my photo files are stored and to delete them.  I have several back-ups.  Thanks - Arthur

This sort of error message only comes up for Lightroom when your hard disk is full. Indeed this has nothing to do with internal memory as that will be intelligently be dealt with. If you have a mac Book Air that is not so surprising as the cheapest versions come with very small hard disks and if you shoot raw with any recent camera, you'll fill up your hard disk very quickly and you can probably only store a few months of pictures if you are a typical photographer. So the bottom line is that you need to create some room on your hard disk. You should move some of your originals to an external hard disk. You can also delete some of your backup copies of your catalog file that Lightroom automatically generates every few days and that quickly gobble up hard disk space. So first figure out how full your hard disk is. To see that, go to the apple menu, hit -> About this Mac -> More info->Storage. You should see your internal hard disk on top and you'll find that it is almost entirely full with photos. Now find your Lightroom catalog file using Finder. It is usually in a folder in the Pictures folder in your home directory. You should see a Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file, a previews file and a folder called backups. Inside the backups folder, you'll find a lot of subfolders. They have names that show the dates the backups were created. If you have backups of your entire hard disk, you can delete these backups when they are older than a few months. I usually only keep the last 4 around. Just drag the folders into the trash can on the dock on the bottom of your screen and empty the trash. This will probably free up enough space that Lightroom will already run again. Now start thinking about where you will want to store older images. If you have a good USB3 or Thunderbolt hard disk that is probably the best option. There is a video here by Adobe that has some instructions on how to do this: Is Your Hard Drive Full? Here’s How to Move Images to Another Drive in Lightroom. « Julieanne Kost's Blog If that doesn't work because you don't have enough hard drive space to run Lightroom yet, here is another set of instructions to move your files using the finder to the other hard disk: How do I move only my photos to another hard drive, leaving the catalog where it is? - The Lightroom Queen. If you follow that, as soon as you confirm all your images are on the new hard disk, you can delete them from your internal one. She is not so clear about that part but if you don't delete the originals that you moved off you don't free up space. You should move the folder structure over to the new hard disk and then reconnect the folders in Lightroom. That should make it refind all your images.
That said, if you are uncomfortable with the computer in itself, your best bet is to find a local photography club. There is invariably a Lightroom savvy person in there that could help you move your files. That might be your best bet if you are uncomfortable moving these yourself. A general mac savvy person like you would find at an Apple store or so generally will not be able to help you with this except when they are photographers themselves and know Lightroom. You might get lucky with that.

  • My iphone storage is full due to my large photo library. As I want to go on taking more photos, if I back up my phone to icloud, can I then delete all my photos from my iphone to make room for new photos?

My iphone storage is full due to my large photo library. As I want to go on taking more photos, if I back up my phone to icloud, can I then delete all my photos from my iphone to make room for new photos? Or will the next time I back up lose all those previously backed up as it is a 'new' set of data?
I just want to find the easiest and safest way of not losing all my photos while being able to take more than my iPhones storage worth as it is already full - can someone help me please? I thought icloud was the solution to not uploading my photos to the mac but I'm not sure if the way it's going is working and don't want to delete photos or lose my phone and then find out what I'm doing isn't actually storing my photos permanently. Thanks

    Hey EmilyEliza,
As you are clearly aware, it is important for you to have backups of your important data, including all of these photos you are currently keeping on your iPhone. While it is possible to use iTunes or iCloud to do backups of your iPhone, the problem becomes how to access those backups if you have deleted the photos from your iPhone. Once you have done the backup and then removed the photos from the iPhone, the only way to access the photos is by restoring the backups to the phone. See this article for information about backups made from the iPhone -
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
If you want to easily access the photos once they are off of the iPhone, another approach to this would be to import your photos from the iPhone into an application on your Mac, such as iPhoto. To learn how to do this, use the steps in this article -
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support
Once those photos are on your computer, it is still important to back up those photos to somewhere else, so you can be sure of their safety before removing them from the iPhone. Your Mac’s Time Machine application is one method of doing this -
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Moving photos off of my mac's hard drive & onto an external without affecting my imported LR2 pics

    HI! A little info first...
I am a photog so I have thousands of photos that i work with from my Mac's Internal Hard Drive.
First, I upload photos from my camera to the Pictures folder on my Mac.
Then, I upload the photos LR where I choose the ones I want to keep and edit. I, then, export my edited photos back to the original folder they were in.
I backup daily using Time Machine, so I am good there, but my HD is about completely full so I need to MOVE the folders of Pics OFF of my computer's HD.
I know that if I move the photos off of my HD and onto an external, all of my photos will in LR will be lost (broken links?).
    So, I have two questions...
How can I do this big move and still keep my LR folders in tact? Is this possible?
    and,
Should I start a new catalog to begin my new batch of incoming photos? I have so many folders in LR now, that I sometimes have a hard time finding the folder that I need.
    **I am using LR2
Thank you so much, in advance, for any help or suggestion!!!
    Heidi

    Hi Heidi!
       Okay, let's see...
i ADD photos to catalog without moving. and when i export...i export them back to their original folder.
So basically, you are elminating most of the functions of using LR in the first place.  So, let me explain a bit..
LR is designed to do a couple of things for your;  manage large collections of images, and edit images without destruction of the original image.
Let's take the last one first:  without destruction.   You are pointing LR at an original image (using the Add import).   You then use LR to do all the edits you like to it.  Then you Export back into the same directory, _overwriting_ your original.  This means that all of the history that LR keeps track of, such as your color edits, etc, gets wiped out.   That neatly negates LR's ability to do non-destructive editing.   Because you can't go back to your original, having overwritten it.
Do you have a reason why you shoot in jpg mode?  Or is it just because you haven't understood or tried raw mode?  The difference shooting in raw makes is quite dramatic in LR compared to shooting in jpg.  (And, it makes it almost impossible to overwrite the original!)  But that can come as a later refinement, if you wish.  Let's work on your current problem.
on the left side, under folders...i have about 200 folders from the last
year and i have about 60,000 photos total in my catalog. obviously, it
is getting hard for me to find folders when i need them even though i do
label each folder with the year/month/brief desciption (2010 december
    xmas)
I think we have a different description of how you create folders.  If you have 200 hundred folders, you are not doing what you claim;  year/month/... Becuase that would mean you have been taking photos for 200 years!
Here is what I meant by folder structures.  I keep all of my images in a sub-folder called MainCatalog.  That way, when I do backups, I only have to grab that one folder, and everything below it is backed up.
Top level is major project, it's the one farthest left, below my parent folder:
    MainCatalog
       family_farm
       rugby
       wedding
Under those catagories, each one has a year folder.
    MainCatalog
       family_farm
                2010
                2011
And each folder under the year has month
    MainCatalog
      family_farm
               2010
                     2010-01
                     2010-05
And each folder with month under it has the day,
    MainCatalog
      family_farm
              2010
                    2010-05
                             2010-05-03
                             2010-05-06
You could, for example, replace the bottom folder with a description appended to it.  You can see that this decreases the number of folders you have to scan to find what you are looking for;  by knowing the year and month, it's down to at most 31 folders.  This can be changed around; you could remove the top level project, and just use the rest of it, or move the project to the bottom... many ways of doing it.  One reason I chose this method is that LR will create all of the folders for me, I just create the top level major project folder.  Then in the import dialog, I point to the major project folder, and tell LR to import via the date format, and choose the year->year-mon->year-mon-day format.  Easy.
Now, as to moving your images to an external disk...
First, I would promote a parent folder.  This is done from within LR.  Bring up LR, and right-click on any of the folders you currently have, and select "promote parent folder".  This will have the effect of moving all of your folders into a sub-folder, and you'll now see the sub-folder at the very top in your list.  This is good.
And by finder, we meant the normal operating system's finder, not from within LR.  Some people move from within LR, some don't.  I find that if I use the operating system to move my files and later tell LR to reconnect them, I don't have problems with LR not being able to see the drive, as some people say they do.  Works both ways, but I obviously like my way better.
Now, as to moving your images... yep, it's easy, as someone else pointed out.  Just drag (move, not copy) and drop onto your new hard drive from your operating system.  Then when you bring up LR, you'll see '?' on the folder pane, saying LR doesn't know where these are anymore.  Right-click on the  top-level (parent) folder that you promoted, and browse to the new location and LR will connect them again.  The reason for doing the promote parent is that you only have to do this once; LR will connect all of the folders below it if they are in the same structure.
You don't need to upgrade to LR 3.3 if you don't need to yet;  I would recommend downloading Lr 2.7, however, as it fixed a few bugs in 2.6.  And it's a free upgrade.  With your current worfflow, there isn't a dramatic improvement in using 3.3.  The improvements are mostly for raw files, and many people have found that 3.3 is slower in regards to 2.6/2.7.
    Does that make sense now?
    Cheers!

  • How to measure the number of pixels involved in a selected area of a digital photo?

Hi everyone. I want to determine the number of pixels in an object that is part of a digital photo. I use cameras to film chunks of ice breaking away from ice cliffs or tidewater glaciers. I want to know the size of the ice chunk that my digital photographs capture. I know the width and height of the ice cliff in metres already, so I was thinking that I could convert the equivalent of 1 pixel : ? metres - this is really what I want to do. That way every time I see a chunk of ice breaking off, I can pull up the photo, outline the chunk, calculate how many pixels fill the area of ice removed by the chunk breaking off and convert to metres area 2 - thus giving me my size order. If anyone has ideas on how to do this I would really appreciate it, thanks so much community. I was thinking that Photoshop or Fireworks could help me with this, Ricky

    Hi SIlkrooster,
Thanks for responding and giving a suggestion,
I followed your approach (see attached screen shot) , Image, Image Size, and found that approximately 37 pixels = 1 centimetre. So just to be clear - if I measure a straight line with the ruler tool that is say 10cm long, I can simply do: 10 cm * 37 pixels (1cm equivalent) = 370 pixels for the straight line. Do you agree?
    Do you agree?
