Taking family macbook to college, can I restore it to factory settings?

My mom has a macbook air with mountain lion that the whole famly uses (1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3). We all have a login with documents, files etc stored on it. To save money I'm going to take it to college instead of buying a new one (plus it's light!) but I want to restore it to factory settings and start fresh. Is this possible? Should I take it to a mac store? Also, a friend of mine got extra storage added to her macbook pro (bought like 5 years ago) to make it faster, is it possible to do the same to mine?

You can only add more memory or change the HDD if the model you have permits that. The latest MBAs, for example, are not user upgradeable.
The last of the C2D MBA models supported a maximum of 4 GBs of RAM and came with flash drives, not HDDs. They are essentially not upgradeable.
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
       A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
       B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
          1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
          2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
          3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
              side.
          4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
              sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
               startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
          1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
          3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
          4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
          5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
     A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
          1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
          2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
          3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
          4. Install OS X.
          5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
          6. Shutdown the computer.
     B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
          1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
              Utilities window appears.
          2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
          3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
          4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
          5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
          6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
          7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
          8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

  • Can't restore system to factory settings

    Hi,
My Lenovo 3000 v100 just crashed. I was able to save the data using the rescue and recovery software, but now I cannot boot windows. I tried to reset it to factory settings, but it doesn't work. The program freezes right after it displays the message "Preparing your hard drive, please wait…” I left it for hours and it shows 0% progress. If I restart the computer, it goes straight into "Rescue and Recovery" (I can’t get it to boot normally). I tried to install windows XP from a cd, but I get the message that “no hard disk was found on this computer”.
I bought a different hard disk. I should receive it in a few days. But can I make this one work? I need the computer tomorrow. I can access the data on it, so the disk is not completely damaged. Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

I have the same problem. I can access my files in Rescue and Recovery but I cannot rescue some of the files i desperately need onto an external media as RnR wont even detect any external media. I cant get my computer to boot normally..its stuck in the vicious cycle of cntrl+alt+delete.
    Some one please advise!!

  • I just recently bought my friend's iMac 10,1 21.5in with all of his documents in it He lost his installer disks and it has OS X Snow Leopard. How can I restore it to factory settings? Or can I buy OS X Lion online and restore it to factory settings?

    ?

Sooner or later, you will need to have those install disks, so you or your friend need to call Apple, give them the serial number of the machine and ask for replacement disks which should be sent out for a nominal fee. Other than that, you could also buy Snow Leopard retail disk at various resellers or Apple store online for $29.
You will need that disk because: if you want to update to Lion and you purchase it at the app store, the license for it is not transferable, so if you ever sell that Mac, you are required to uninstall Lion and reinstall the original system (which you will need the disks for). The disks also include diagnostic/repair software.
So, it's best to have the disks; and, if you do purchase and install Lion, make sure you make a complete backup - bootable clone or Time Machine just in case.

  • Do I need startup discs to upgrade hardware on MacBook Pro or can I restore the hard drive from from a Time Machine backup?

do I need startup discs to upgrade hardware on MacBook Pro or can I restore the hard drive from from a Time Machine backup?

Ok, well go and grab a small 2.5" hard drive enclosure so you can put the new drive in & temporarily use it like an external hard drive.
Download Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper and make a bootable clone of your current HDD on the new HDD.
Once that's done you can test the clone by booting from it. To do this hold Optioni while booting to select the external (new) drive. If everything looks ok, you can go ahead and swap over the HDD's.
    So much easier.

  • Help! I can't delete my neighbors email from my iPhone 5 icloud account after I sold it to him after restoring it to factory settings.  Now he's on my iCloud account and it cannot be deleted.  Its impossible.  help. It seems the first one cant get delete

Help Please, I sold my iphone 4 to my neighbor after I restored it to factory settings.  I just bought a new iphone 5 and decided to check out the icloud "stuff' so that I can use 'find my iphone' because I have 2 kids.  I went to check out my icloud on my imac and in the address bar put icloud.com then signed in, double clicked on mail went accounts then clicked on the gear in the right hand corner and there it was.  My neighbor had his email in the icloud and there absolutely was no way to delete his info off of my new phone.  I guess once the first person enters their info you absolutely cant get rid of it.  you can get rid of aliases but just not the original one. WHY!!  Is there any brilliant, wonderful, generous person out there that would know how to delete him from my account.  The genius bar said that they've never seen this before.  If someone can help I'm taking the info to the apple stores that I went to so that I can teach them how to do it.  Of course, I will tell them who showed me. I give you my word.

As far as I know you can't delete the primary email address for an iCloud account.  It's assigned when the account is created.  But your neighbor wouldn't have been able to get into your iCloud account without your Apple ID and password.  Are you sure the account wasn't still on your phone when you gave it to him?
You could migrate a copy of your data to a new iCloud account but I would still be concerned that someone else was using my old account, which presumably still has your data in it.
I'm fairly certain that you're going to have to have iCloud support help you sort this one out as they may have the ability to make changes to an existing account that users can't.  Make an appointment with the genius bar at a nearby Apple store and have them take a look at it.  If necessary, they should be able to contact iCloud support for you.

  • If I upgraded my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Lion via the web and now wish to erase the hard drive and restore it to factory settings to sell.  How do I accomplish this?

I upgraded the operating system on my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Lion via the web.  Now I need to erase the hard drive and restore it to factory settings, so that I can pass it on.  How do I accomplish this?  When I insert the Mac OS X install disk, the only option is to erase the free space.  Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thank you

You need to boot off the original Snow Leopard DVD's that came with the system.
Once you are running off of the DVD you will be able to do a clean install of SL
To boot off the DVD with the system up running Lion insert the DVD. Open Sytem Preferences->Startup Disk and select the DVD then restart the machine.

  • I want to sell my Macbook 6,1. How do I restore it to factory settings if it didn't come with a installation CD?

As the title says, I am looking to sell my macbook, and I am trying to restore it to factory settings but everywhere I read it says that to get it to factory settings I need the instllation CD, but my macbook did not come with that (was it supposed to?).
By the way, The machine is currently running mountain lion.

Well if you want to get it to Snow Leopard, you are going to have to purchase a DVD from Apple to get it installed.  The CD is $19.99 which would cost the same as getting Lion or Mountain Lion from the App store and doing an install through the Internet.  Yes, if you go to install it, it's going to ask you for your Apple ID to verify that you purchased the OS to be able to use it.  However, if you use yours, you'll be able to get OS X installed and not have anything else to do with your Apple ID.  This way the person buying it could still enter their own information and purchase their own Apps and things with their ID.  However, I'm not sure if when updates are needed to the OS or whatever else could come along the way that it isn't going to ask them for your ID.  You should try to talk them into talking to Apple and ordering it on their Apple ID, they will then get a code to enter to make it available on their ID so you can get it installed for them under their ID.  This would cost the same as it would if you were to order the CD's so that you could install an out of date version and still have to pay to update it another $19.99.

  • I have an original iPad and need to restore it to factory settings. It was loaned to me and I don't have a back up via iTunes. Can anyone tell me how to do it without iTunes back up?

I have an oritinal iPad and need to restore it to factory settings. I've followed the instuctions from the reset menu. When it powers back up it takes me to a screen indicating I need to attach it to iTunes. The iPad was loaned to me so I did not have a need to back it up. Can anyone help me restore the settings without connecting to iTunes?

    Helpjere-
When you reset to factory settings, you erased all content and settings.  That restored it to factory settings except that it kept the latest iOS update.
The person who loaned it to you can connect it to iTunes on their computer.  They will be given the option to restore from their backup.

  • I recently backed up my iPad and then I restored it to factory settings. Now, I want to restore it from the back up that I created, but it will not accept my Apple ID password. Is there any way that I can save my data?

    Hi,
As I have said in the title, I was supposed to do a restore on my iPad for work. I backed up the device and then I restored it to factory settings as I was instructed. Now that all of that is complete, I tried to restore it from the back up point I created and it will not recognize my Apple ID password.  I really hope that I won't lose all of my data, but I don't know what else to do. I have tried entering my password numerous times. I really hope that someone can help me.

Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password.

Try a new SIM from your carrier.  If that doesn't work, make a Genius Bar appointment and get your phone evaluated.

  • How can I turn off the laptop after restoring it to factory settings?

    Hello everyone
I am selling my Portege R830-10Q so I want to restore it to factory settings (out-of-box state) AND THEN TURN IT OFF.
I have successfully brought the laptop to factory settings by using the _TOSHIBA Recovery Wizard_ and choosing *Recovery of Factory Default Software (Recover to out-of-box state)*. However, at the end of the recovery process and after everything is re-installed I was not able to TURN OFF the laptop. I was only given the option of restarting it. After restating it, the Windows set-up process starts.
I don't want to set-up Windows, i.e. language, keyboard, user account, etc. I want to leave the Windows set-up for the person who buys the laptop from me. How can I switch off the laptop after the system recovery without having to set up Windows?
    I'd really appreciate your help.
    Regards
    Pedro

When recovery procedure is finished and you are asked for restart just press power button and switch it off. I think it only thing you can do.
Anyway, why not to start Windows and go through setup option. New owner can change this basic settings anyway. As username put Admin and language and keyboard can be set as default.
For instance, if you have German recovery image set everything to German. New owner can change it anyway.

You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup that iTunes makes.

Are you sure?  I have other devices at home.  The only way I can make them disappear on the tracking list is by turning off location or resetting to factory settings.
I just want to make sure I'm not tracking a phantom that I will never recover :-(
