Taking iPhone to Italy

I'm flying to Italy next weekend for a two week trip, and instead of my PowerBook G4 I will take the iPhone. I will be using it only in WiFi mode at both of my Hotels in Rimini and Florence.
I will not use it as a "phone" or use EDGE for browser and e-mail. I will bring my old Motorola V600 GSM phone and buy a cheap local TIM SIM card to make phone calls.
Apparently to enable "EDGE" for Europe you have to call AT&T and "upgrade" your plan, or EDGE won't work, which suits me perfectly. On the other hand, regular international phone roaming is enabled by default by AT&T, so to avoid getting charged roaming fees, I won't answer any calls.
Has anyone tried to do this in Italy or any other European country?

I didn't think international roaming was on by
default. You can check if it's on your plan by
logging into your AT&T account and checking features.
This is what it says about my "added" features:
STANDARDINTLROAM $0.0
I think that means I have it, even if I did't ask for it..
Their system is currently down so I can't check it
myself. Do that before you leave, it's a pain to fix
when you're already there. And if you turn on your
iPhone in Europe, voice mail will still cost you even
if you don't pick up calls because the call will be
routed to Europe, then back to the US
Actually I plan to check iPhone voice mail using a local pre-paid SIM card on another cell phone.
In any case I've used AT&T international roaming and
it works fine in Italy. In fact when I stuck my SIM
card in a (European) 3G phone it worked fine over
European 3G bands.
One thing about the $6 monthly plan...you'll want to
keep it on until your charges get billed to you.
International roaming charges don't always get billed
the second you get back to the US, sometimes they
take a month or two and if the $6 plan is not on your
feature list, you'll get charged the higher rate.
Good to know.

  • Off loading photos and videos from ATT/US iPhone in Italy

    Hi -
I'm taking my US purchased ATT iPhone 4 on a backpack trip to Italy to use as a photo/video camera.  I have a regular, US customer ATT account - not a business or international account.
If I understand it correctly, to avoid getting socked with massive roaming and data charges I should:
    - keep the phone on Airplane Mode,
    -  turn off Mail accounts and Push,
    -  turn off WiFi until I'm in a wifi zone (like a hotel).
    I still have some questions.
What would happen if I left Location Services on so my photos would be geotagged?  Does that incur data charges?
I'm planning on taking a LOT of pictures and I'm not bringing a laptop so my next biggest concern is -
what would be the smartest way to back-up the photo/videos somewhere safe, so I can delete them from the iPhone to make room for more images?
    - If I use Photostream (only when in a wifi zone)- when I delete images from the phone they get removed from the stream - right?
    - iCloud (only when in a wifi zone) won't store photos - will it?
Remember - I want to do this data transfer without ATT charges. Do I understand these things correctly??
Is there a portable iPhone hard drive I can use without a computer interface?  That would be ideal - to just copy photos and videos over to an external box via "hard wire".
    Thanks for your input.

Moving photos from old iMac to memory stick
         Open Photos in iPhoto
Select All photos (which happens to be 2193 at the moment in my case)
Drag Photos on to the Memory Stick icon
That is not moving an iPhoto Library. It will not retain Faces, Titles and lots of other metadata. That's moving the Previews (only) from one Library to a thumb drive and then importing them to another Library.
    To move a Library:
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
I'll ask the same question that I posed
above - can you do this for Mail and iTunes?
Most certainly not. You need to ask on those forums for the correct way to move those databases.

  • No FT between US Mac and WiFi iPhone in Italy

Can't do FaceTime chat between my Mac in USA on Airport Extreme WiFi and ani iPhone (4s) on hotel or cafe WiFi in Italy.
The Italy end attempts to contact me via my Apple ID (I'm correctly set up, have tested with a local user), but no resullt  I've also tried connecting from my end to the iPhone's Apple ID as well as its phone number. The other user's iPhone has been OK at home with domestic FT chats. Any troubleshooting tips to pass along via iMessage (which works fine)? Thanks.

    Chuck,
Make sure the person with the iPhone has the correct date/time settings for the time zone the iPhone is located in. Usually, this is set automatically, but it doesn't hurt to double check.
Also, it is possible that the public wifi systems that are being utilized by the iPhone do not have enough available bandwidth to support FaceTime.

I recently went to Italy (for business March 2011).  I have a Verizon iPhone 4 (CDMA), and called Verizon before I went.  They said "No, It would not work" only the WiFi.  However, I did see some Italians using iPhone 4 (I could tell it was iPhone 4 since it looked exaclty like mine (rectangle, and not "curved corners").  So I guess, if you switched to an Italian network probably Vodafone it could work.
Vodaphone is not a CDMA network, a Verizon iPhone will not work, an AT&T iPhone will work.

  • HT1476 Can I recharge my iPhone in Italy with a modified plug?

Can I recharge my iPhone 5S in Italy by simply using a plug adapter?

    Yes, why not?
If you have a simple 3 pin plug hole, then the "electricity will flow".
The charger will have to be Apple Official (of course), and for further info, you should take the charger with you on your trip. :)

  • Taking iPhone out of docking station disconnects PC from WLAN?

    That's it in a nutshell.
Details: iPhone is connected to PC (Vista) via docking station and USB. Taking the iPhone out of the docking station intermittently causes a disconnect of the PC from the WLAN both were using. iPhone remains connected to WLAN router. Cannot re-connect PC to WLAN using software. PC needs to be re-booted. WLAN connector on PC is a Netgear USB stick.
Might the cause be a conflict between the two USB connections (dock vs. WLAN stick)?

Apple can't do anything about it. They are not a law enforcement agency.

  • Use a USA iPhone in Italy.

I,i'm italian and I will come to USA in October. I want to buy the new iPhone 5s,is it possible to use it in Italy too? And what's the price of a no-contract IPhone 5s? Thanks!

Bad idea... the warranty is not international so if your phone requires service, you'l have to bring it back to the US.  Just buy a phone in Italy.

  • Iphone 4 Italy

    Hi
I just got my new Iphone 4 from Italy
i got it with no plan (unlocked) and it was working fine, i tried updating the iOS to the 4.3.3 version and my computer crashed, as the result of this i had to restore my iPhone... after i've done the restoration and updated it, it displays a screen with a itunes Icon and the USB cable and keeps saying:
    No SIM card installed
Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iPhone
i also have a scroll bar that takes me to the Emergency call screen
So, is that ok? because i bought it unlocked so it was supposed to work without a sim card (am i right??)
I am going back to Spain in two days and i intend to get a spanish plan there... is it gonna work?
I am afraid that my officially unblocked iphone has turned into a italian blocked iphone...
    thanks

No, you can't activate the phone without a sim card. If you purchased from an Apple store in Italy, your phone is officially unlocked. You can use any sim card from any supported GSM carrier, but you need an activated sim card to activate the phone.

  • Taking iPhone out the country

i bought my iPhone from apple and a 2 year contract with at&t and i want to cancel that contract and unlock it because I'm taking it outside the country... what should i do and how much would it cost me

Those are questions for AT&T, not other iphone users. Call them for exact details.
You'll have to pay an early termination fee (>$300) , plus an unlocking fee.  I'm not certain that they will unlock phones that didn't complete the contract even if you pay the early termination fee if your account with them has not been in good standing.

  • Taking iPhone 2 to Europe

    Hi,
I happen to be going to Italy for 3 weeks....I already have an iPhone..I was told that for $5.99 I can change my phone plan to be able to call back the US for 99 cents per minute...does anybody foresee and new phone plans for travelling to Europe once the new phone is out with 3G? I am leaving July 13th and if they do offer a new plan it might be worth getting the new phone for rather than risk paying alot for calls.
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

You can turn on Airplane mode - disabling the phone and cellular data. Then you can turn on wi-fi.
This is covered in the manual:

  • IPhone for Italy

    Hi
    a question from Italy:
in the next months I should come to US on business trip, I would like to buy an iPhone 3 GS, can you tell me if it works in Italy or there some problem with that?
    thanks
    Roberto

Yes, it is like that in the USA; all iPhone models sold in the USA are locked to AT&T SIM cards, and AT&T does not unlock them (apparently not even if you buy yourself out of the contract, or when then contract expires).
If you are Italian and liven in Italy, buy the iPhone there? You will get an unlocked model that works with any operator's SIM card.
