Taking iPhoto from iBook to my Powerbook

hi
I have a newish iBook 13 which came installed with iPhoto 8. I also have a PB 17 (both dual core) which only has iPhoto6.
I'd like the extra options of iPhoto on my PB17 but need to know how to transfer the program across. Can it be done?
I tried once and it would not open. I also tried to install to the PB the newer installations using the iBook 13 disk but was disallowed!
Is there a way that does not include buying another version of iLife and all the stuff I don't want that comes with it? I want to keep all my imaging work on my PB, and I don't really want to go through the agony of transferring files bewteen the two systems.
Any ideas highly welcome!
thanks
John

Not legally
The copy of iPhoto that came with your iBook is licensed to be used on one and only one computer at a time - to have iPhoto on two computers my must purchase iLife for the second computer (or purchase a family license for up to five computers in one household)
iPhoto alone is worth the $79.00 ( http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=E80 5623D&fnode=home/shop_mac/software/apple&nplm=MB015Z/A )

  • Transfer Netscape email from iBook to PowerBook

I am switching from using Netscape for email on a iBook G4 to a PowerBook G4. The iBook has Netscape 7.2 with bookmarks and emails. I can’t get Netscape on the PowerBook to recognize the iBook email files that I copied over. What I did was to copy over (via Firewire) the Mozilla folder in “computer”/”hard drive”/users/”name”/Library from iBook to PowerBook.
When I start Netscape on the PowerBook Netscape acts as if a new user profile is being set up and won’t find the user profile that was copied with the Mozilla folder. There must be another file that needs to be copied that I am missing. What is it?

Your profile is contained at Documents->Mozilla->Profiles. Here's an article on moving Netscape mail that may help, and it includes macs: http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/email/manage/newprogram.html#utility

  • Moving "profile" and bookmarks from ibook to powerbook?

I just bought a 15 powerbook after loving my ibook for the last two years. My question is how can I move my files from my ibook to the powerbook so I can keep my bookmarks AND my log-in passwords for website log-ins?
Of course I'd like to bring my email with me but I think I will import those from the application entourage (don't throw anything at me. I've tried Mail but really think its lacking in features that I enjoy in Entourage including the built in calendar that I've used for several years now). I can simply import using shared files once I get my powerbook online and allow file sharing on my ibook.
But what files/folders do I need to drag into the powerbook to make sure my bookmarks and log-ins/passwords are imported too. Is there a trick or a source I can read before I get started?
    thanks for your help!

The Migration Manager is the best way to transfer all of your applications, documents and settings from the iBook to the PowerBook, but if only want to transfer specific files, then you will have to move them from the iBook to the PowerBook manually. Your passwords are stored in the keychain file on the iBook in ~/Library/Keychains. You will need to make a copy of that file and add it to the list of keychains on your PowerBook as described in Mac Help:
Adding an existing keychain file to your keychain list
If you have a keychain file from another computer, you can add the keychain to your keychain list.
Open Keychain Access, located in /Applications/Utilities.
    Select Edit menu >Keychain List.
Click the Add button, then locate the keychain file and click Open
You can transfer your Safari bookmarks manually, as well, by copying the Bookmarks.plist file in the ~/Library/Safari folder on the iBook and placing the copy in the same location on your PowerBook.
    Good luck.

  • I like to manually upload my photo's to my computer, then import them to iPhoto. My problem with this is that now I have duplicates and it's taking up way to much space on my computer. Is there any way to stop iPhoto from creating duplicates like this?

I always manually transfer photo's from my SD card to a new folder under Pictures, and then import them into iPhoto. After doing this for quite some time I know realize that I have all these duplicate photo's between iPhoto library and Pictures and a ton of wasted space. I want to continue to upload photo's to a new folder so I can organize them myself and then access them anytime through the finder, if I upload them through iPhoto then they're stored in "iPhoto Library" which can only be accessed through iPhoto. Is there anyway to stop iPhoto from duplicating photo's and just use it to catalog photo's from Pictures? Also on a side note, when using multiple SD cards in one folder, my camera often comes up with duplicate names for totally separate photo's, anyone have an suggestions for this?

Yes you can set iPhoto to run in Referenced mode but don't. It makes more work for zero advantage, is unnecessary and only storing up problems for the future.

has how to do, and why you shouldn't.
Using iPhoto makes the question about the filenames moot too... Other than that you'll need to renae the files.

  • Transfer iPhoto, iTunes from iBook to iMac

    Hello-
Just wondering how to transfer my pictures and music from iBook to iMac?
I'm not sure if my firewire port is functioning on the iBook so that way
    may not work. Thanks

cjohnson24, Welcome to the discussion area!
The fastest way is to boot your iBook in Firewire target disk mode. The iBook will then appear as an external FireWire drive on your iMac.
FYI, from your system information you have an Intel-based iMac. This discussion area is for the older iMac G4 . You should post future questions in the Intel-based iMac discussion area.

  • How do I stop iPhoto from auto-launching?

I'm running the latest version of OS X and iPhoto, this has been going on for 2 years or more and I still can't figure out a solution. So I figured maybe something new is out there where someone might have a clue why I'm experiencing this.
I cannot keep iPhoto from launching on my Mac. I'm not plugging in any peripherals, there is no event taking place that is causing iPhoto to logically launch, I'm not connecting a camera or USB stick or anything. It just launches. It's like an app version of the Walking Dead, I can't kill this **** thing and I have not yet figured out how to put a stake through its brain. I like iPhoto when I actually want to use it, which is rarely. But it loads when I first boot up (even though it is NOT listed in my startup apps), and if I quit it, between 10-60 minutes later I'll be typing away working on something and boom, it just launches again. There's no pattern to it, it just won't stay quit.
Ayone have any clue why this might be happening? I've really grown to hate this app.

Frank, it does it at 2 different "times":
First, EVERY time I reboot, iPhoto launches.
Second, just randomly, but usually within 20-30 minutes after I've quit the application. In fact, it just did it again.
So, I went to the Console to see if there was anything there and there was a bunch, but I've no idea what it means. Lots of references of mdworker. I'll paste the relevant sections of the Console below, maybe it means something to someone smarter than me. One line of it that repeats that I find interesting is this:

  • Duplicates in iphoto from syncs gone wrong ( will this idea work to fix it?

Hello all, i have recently come back from a month of traveling the US in which i took about 2,000 photos on my iphone, so when i got back home i synced my iphone up to my imac, and during the sync process i launched iphoto and began importing the 2,000 photos. Well the first sync attempt froze, so i pulled the USB out of the phone and re-synced, and that froze, so i tried again this time successfuly importing the pics into iphoto, neatly organized by time-stamped events from 10/22/09-11/20/09. Anyway after the 3rd sync, i realized that the first 2 botched attempts actually imported some of the photos on each attempt but incorrectly time-stamping them to putting them into the July 09' event for some reason (first attempt), and creating a new event incorrectly time-stamped as the day of the import (2nd attempt). Anyway what this means is i have many duplicates and triplicates of most of those 2000 photos, its a mess.
So having said that, i should note that i have never deleted any photos out of my iphone, i have every single photo i have ever taken still in my iphone camera roll, 3,700 to be axact. I have since taken the time to hand select all the photos taken from that trip in iphoto and correcty moving them into the correct time stamped event created from the 3rd succesful import. Rather than carefully guessing which photo is an original and duplicate and risking deleting photos by accident, i had an idea that i hope will work given the fact that i still have all photos still in iphone camera roll, and wanted to get feedback on this before i actually tried doing it,,,,
,,,i was thinking that if i went into iphoto and deleted all the photos and events from right before i left for the trip until now, and then re-synced my iphone to my computer, would iphoto recognize all those photos from that time needed to be re-imported from the camera roll into iphoto again, this time organizing them into their correct dated events? I have a setting for the importing of photos, something about not showing or syncing any photos that have already been imported from camera roll, so by deleting those pics from iphoto, i was thinking that it would detect those photos to not be in iphoto and want to re-import them. So i am taking this extra pre-cautionary step of asking the help forum if this would work or not before just going ahead and doing it. I do not have a digital camera so all my photos in iphoto are from my iphones cameral roll. Thanks for reading this.
    Stabb

ok, so i tried my idea, i went into iphoto and selected all the events that were from the dates corresponding to those photos, and moved them into iphoto trash. Then i synced my phone back up to itunes, and after the sync was complete, i checked in iphoto to see if it would recognize those pics would need to be re-imported back in from my camera roll, and they weren't there in the import window. So either iphoto was not detecting those to be imported because all the photos were still in iphoto even though they were in the trash bin, or iphoto won't detect photos for importing after they've already been imported once despite them being deleted from iphoto after the import. I have an external hard drive with time machine backing my computer up every few hours and i am still a bit nervous to just empty iphoto trash with all those photos in it, so i just restored all the events back into iphoto from the trash bin. I really felt like this should have worked. Can anyone confirm if iphoto does not detect photos for importing off iphone camera more than once if they've since been deleted out of iphoto?

  • Taking Notes In Ibook's PDF files (Ipad)

Although it is possible to take notes in the Books presented in Ibooks, which is for my purpose a very nice feature this function does not function does not be present in the pdf files. And since 98% of the stuff I use are pdf files (music books) I did not succeed in taking notes within the files. Converting the pdf files into an epub format made a complete mess of the indexing and the size of the sheets so it was no longer possible to select to use the books in a proper way. So I'm stuck. Will there be an update from Ibooks to take notes also in pdf files from Ibooks?

    Thanks pogopossum,
I'm using now Goodreader. This has also the advantage of a good interlinking to other available documents.
This is also not functioning with ibooks. Goodreader has some drawbacks compared to ibooks.
You cannot recognize the books easily since no frontpages are present and you need to scroll more to find the correct document. A annoying thing is that once you enlarge the index and jump to a linked page that page will show up in the enlarged fashion. So you always need to resize the new page. This problem is not present in ibooks. An enormous good feature of Goodreader is the easy and many ways to import files.

  • Printing From iBook To Printer on a Vista, Can't see Vista shared printers

Printing From iBook To Printer on Windows Vista Desktop, Can't see shared printer on a Vista machine from a Mac, although Windows notebooks find it immediately. When same machine is booted into XP the priners share perfectly with both of my iBooks, but when the same machine is booted into Vista with the printer shared etc, the iBooks don't see the printer. Other Windows machines on the newtork do see the shared printers in Vista.
I have previously always had success sharing printers on Windows XP machines with my iBooks. . However upon installing Vista on my desktop I find I can no longer find the printer in the Mac's printer setup utility. When I dual boot back to XP everything works fine, but on the same machine when I boot into Vista I am unble to see the printers. The Mac printer setup utility finds the Vista machine on the network, but the printers are never visible. Is their some secret or channge in Vista that prevents Mac's running , in my case,Tiger 10.4.8 from seeing a shared printer on a computer running Vista
On the Vista machine, if I boot into XP The printer is shared and Windows notebooks can print to it, but neither of my iBooks can see the Printers when Vista is running.

  • Export Notes from iBooks?

I have just recently started to use iBooks more heavily to take notes and highlights, but I cannot figure out how to export the notes taken? If there is a way to do this, or a workaround, I would appreciate some help... if there isn't, this is a major feature that needs to be added to iBooks, one that Kindle long since made available (even though taking notes on a Kindle is about impossible, at least you can get them). Thanks, Scott

i started this thread almost a year ago, and i am not using the iPad 2 and STILL have this problem. While you can now export your notes to an email file (it won't let you export your highlights, only your notes), it is almost useless in the manner in which Apple has allowed us to export.
Over the past year trying to find a solution to this problem i have stopped reading books in iBooks almost all together and moved to reading on the Kindle app almost exclusively. The kindle cloud syncs your notes and highlights, a perfect solution that i would have really liked to have seen Apple do as well. I still have a few books in iBooks that i feel are being held hostage, waiting for the day to come when i can access my notes AND highlights via the cloud from iBooks?

How to view pictures on epub book purchased from iBooks?

The important thing to remember abuout iPhoto is that it's a database. And like any db, the data must be imported into it. By default, when you import the pics to iPhoto they are copied into the iPhoto Package File in your Pictures Folder. If you have NOT changed the default, then yes, you can trash the pics outside of the iPhoto Package File.
    Most people do this.

Does iphoto's ibook not ship internationally? I am currently in Hong Kong and have just put a book together that I would like to buy. ibook not letting me put in international address and shipping info seems to suggest US only. I find this hard to believe. The Apple Store in Hong Kong is the size of Manhattan. Well almost!

  • Opening iPhoto from a time machine backup

Is it possible to open the iPhoto application from a time machine backup? Here is my problem and what I am trying to do:
I created a sample book (prior to an actual book) to practice with some settings--photos, layouts, fonts, backgrounds, etc. Then I deleted it by accident. I am grateful that it was just a practice book. But I wanted to use it as a reference for my real book. I would like to open iPhoto from my time machine backup of earlier today, however when I click the iPhoto app from the backup all I get is the information about iPhoto and can not open it. I definitely do not want to restore iPhoto, but is there a way I can open iPhoto to access this sample book information from my backup? Thanks for any info.
    LHM

    Thanks LN,
OK, so if I want to restore a previous iPhoto backup to an external drive (or even to the desktop) how do I do that? I don't see how to choose a different location and I am afraid I am going to mess up my original. I tried restoring and "keeping both", and my original iPhoto was labeled as the original and right next to it appeared an iPhoto folder that did not have the iPhoto library. I moved it to my desktop. All it has in it is a contents folder with a bunch of things I don't understand. When I did this I did not see a way to select a different location. It automatically placed this new iPhoto (folder previously described) in my applications folder. If you can walk me through how to accomplish this I would appreciate it. If not, it is not worth taking the chance that I will mess up my beautifully functioning iPhoto library. Thanks!

  • IBook G4 or Powerbook

I'm wanting to purchase an apple laptop and I'm desperate for some advice. Should i get an ibook or a powerbook.
    Any advice is welcome.
    Kate

The iBook is a poweul machine for the price. It's hard to beat. If you are a casual user playing internet games, surfing, word processing, the occasional imovie, itunes, iphoto, then get an ibook. If you are a heavy user using graphics apps, Final cut express/pro (imovie's big brothers), photoshop, along with the above mentioned - get a powerbook.
    Current differences -
    Powerbook
-A little faster processor (hard to tell the difference)
-64mb video card - good for graphics heavy games, graphics, movies
-widescreen format (on 15" and 17")
    -metal outer casing
    iBook
    -32mb video card
    -normal screen
-plastic casing (similar to the iPod)
Other than that not much different. The difference is the user. the Power-series is mostly designed for the pro user. The i-series (iPod, iBook, iLife) are comsumer user products.
