Taking out and repurposing internal drives

Hi, this is more about retiring my 2004 PMG5. The boot drive is the original. But I installed a new 2nd 1TB drive about a year ago. Can I remove that new drive and put it in a drive enclosure as an external drive for my new Intel Mac? If yes, please point me to procedures for doing just that.

I'm seeing the "No" sign on Startup, and my internal drive doesn't show up.

Good day to you all. It's my first post here and I come to you in desperation.
Last night, i was browsing the internet and syncing my iPhone. Suddenly my iMac froze and there's no way to restart it but to press the back button. Upon restarting, it showed me the Apple logo then a few minutes more it showed me a "No" sign (ie. No Parking circle.) Noticing that this is a serious one, I pulled out my Snow Leopard installation disc and restarted the system. Last night, I managed to see the internal disk listed in Disk Utility, but it's in red. The partitions (Mac OS X and Windows XP via Boot Camp) can be seen but cannot be accessed. Desperate and tired, I slept the night off.
This morning, I tried my luck again. Fired up the iMac with SL inserted, opened up DU, and my internal drive is not in red anymore. I managed to open my Mac but I really noticed the sluggish performance. A couple of hangs later, I had to restart again using the button at the back, and there it was again: No sign. But now it's even worse. I can no longer see my internal drive in DU. Tried almost everything: resetting the PRAM (holding the X button) and pressing the C with SL disc inserted just doesn't cut it. The odd thing though, is when I press the Option key upon startup, I can see all the partitions (Mac OS X, Windows XP, Snow Leopard disc.) But upon clicking Mac OS X always ended up with the "No" sign.
I'm really desperate since I although I'm using Time Machine, I know I exempted some folders in there. Can you suggest some more instructions to make my internal drive show up? Is there a Terminal command of such kind for it? I hope my drive is still okay since I can still see all of the partitions via Option.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
From what you are describing it looks like your HD has either fully failed or is failing. I would suggest taking it in for service. The good news is you have been using Time Machine so you have a backup of most of your system. As you may know TM does not backup any MS Windows data.
If your machine is still covered by warranty or AppleCare this should be pretty painless. If you are not covered by either then just contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider and bring it in. The contact information in your country is:

OMG!!! I lost all my data on my external and my internal drive has been wiped clean! Please help

I bought a very good condition, used macbook pro 4.1. While attempting to transfer files from one of my external drives, some how I erased both the external drive and the internal drive. I didn'y get install disks with it either. I am in a huge panic as I am a 3D graphics designer and had over 5 years woth of work on the external. Can anyone help please? Hopefully something that won't cost anything as I am totally broke, and gonna be much worse if I can't retrieve my client's property

Hey so I want to get a macbook pro 13 in. and I want to upgrade it by putting in more memory and a better hard drive, but I want to buy parts from a different site because it is so much cheaper. Is it easy to take out and replace the memory and hard drive of a macbook pro?

Just make sure the RAM you're buying is brand name and match the specs of your macbook.
Getting cheaper RAM modules sometimes cause issues with the way your Macbook peforms. Learned that lesson when I decided to buy Kingston Value RAM. Had nothing but trouble.
Stick with brands like Crucial ( which I use ), Corsair, Mushkin, Kingston (non value) and from OWC.
As for the hard drive, stay away from Western Digital Blue edition, some macbooks have issues with them.
Also make sure you buy an external USB enclosure so you can clone your drive before you intall it and install your old drive in the USB enclosure and use it as your backup drive.
If you're technically capable, it quite easy swapping out the RAM and Hard Drive.
Do the clone first before you do anything else. That way, when you're done the clone, you just have to open up your macbook once to do the swap.

Locked out of additional internal drives... Help please

Any help would be more then welcomed as I did something stupid and need a bit of help to fix it please.
Had an issue today on my Mac Pro (2.8, Quad 5.1). All was running fine until I went to update a piece of 3rd party software (Fetch). After the download I went to drag new version into my apps folder and was told I didn't have permission to instal the app.
Now to be clear, I've had a bit of an issue with this before as I'm running 2 mac pros in different locations and drag and copy files and folders from here to there on a regular basis via FTP and external drives. I also have all 4 slots filled on both systems with various drives set up for a particular function along with a number of externals. I've set permissions on both systems and all drives to "read and write" for both my accounts to have full access and each time "apply to enclosed items" was selected.
But for some reason, from time to time, I have to authorise the file transfer. Haven't figured out the reason but it's not a huge deal so have left it.
Today was the first time I have had access denied for my home folder when working from same system. Not thinking and while on the phone to someone (this is where I did the stupid part), I opened the info on my boot (startup) drive and decided to add both of my user accounts and change permissions for each in addition to the system, admin and everyone that was already there. This was done while working from it directly and then set options to "apply to enclosed items". Yea, smart I know.
About 20 minutes passed and then it told me that it didn't like any of my system extensions. I was forced to do a restart and got the spinning wheel for about 30 minutes. Had to do a force quit and open in single user. Applejack wouldn't help at all, nothing. Had to then open cd drive through terminal just to get systems disk inside.
Restarted from systems disk and tried a simple disk utility repair. System restarted fine but I noticed that I was then locked out of all of my additional internal drives, iDisk included (padlock shown on all drive icons excluding my Boot/Startup drive). Tried opening info on the various drives with apple i option and "permissions denied" popped up each time.
I then took the step to restore from time machine. Set my restore selection to about 2 hours before I became an idiot. After it was finished I restarted the system hoping that would clear up my mistake but same thing, still locked out of all of my drives aside from boot/startup drive.
All user accounts that I have added to the boot drive are still showing, I have yet to try and remove them... Figured I would ask for help before I messed it up any further. Spoke to apple care and they have advised me to do what I have done so far.
Aside from an erase and instal, what steps should I take from this point? Will removing the added accounts clear up the issue?
Also, any idea as to why I was refused permissions to begin with...?

Advice...Need To Backup and Replace Internal Drive

After a couple years, I have a bad feeling about my internal drive on the Mac Pro.
So....if I use SuperDuper to clone my entire internal drive, and I tell it to copy this to an external drive I have (which also has data on it, but has enough room to copy my internal), then once it's copied over there, and I install a brand new drive for a startup, how does one get the backup off the external drive back on the new blank drive? Do you just reverse the process and use SuperDuper to copy from the folder you copied everything into, onto the new drive?
My head is starting to hurt thinking about all this;)

Boot to your restore DVD or a factory OS X disc released AFTER your machine was made. Make sure all externals are connected. Once you get to the desktop and see the "Install Mac OS X" stuff go to the 'Utilities" menu item and open Disk Utility.
Highlight the new Volume and Select Erase Tab, name what you want and set as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click erase. You can also setup partitions if you need.
Then navigate to the "Restore" tab, click choose source and navigate to the superduper backup file. Click OK.
Drag the newly created "Named" volume into the destination field. Click restore and wait.
Alternately, if your HD is still working you can boot to the DVD and Disk utility and drag the volumes into source and destination to make a clone with out Superduper. This will save some time. If your old
boot is dead this will of course not work.

My FCP X does not recognize my external drive and extra internal drive

I recently had to reinstall FCP X because I found a "?" in my dock when I wanted to work on a project. The app had also disappeared from the Applications file. I had taken a class at the technical college and last opened the program in the lab at school a week earlier. I had been woirking on the project which I had put on my external 3 gb drive. Now, after reinstalling FCP X, my extra internal hard drive and my external drive does not show as an option when I open the program. I cannot access my projects in the Project Browser. I had made four backups, or versions, so I continue to work on the video. Nothing show in the Project Browser. I would like to get to video which I had worked on for some time. The program had work well all semester - until now. Bummer!

It may be that the DVD drive is not getting enough electrical power. Try a powered hub, one that has a separate connection to an AC outlet.

Taking out the S430 optical drive

Hey!
I recently got my S430 and quickly realised that I don't have any need for an optical drive at all. I thought at first that I could maybe swap in a hdd but according to this thread, there is no such drive ;~;
Nevertheless, I would like to ask if I can simply remove the optical drive in order to just save weight. Would this leave a big hole on the side, or can I remove the outer edge of the drive and place it back on the laptop body to cover the gap?

To replace it there are three screws (two for the keyboard plus one for the caddy).
I know since I did just that. I don't even know why would I need a DVD RW.
Regarding the other question: if you just remove it, it will leave a huge hole on the side. And the DVD reader weight is almost nothing.

TM and second internal drive

So I have a little bit of a conundrum; I have two internal drives, a SSD and an HDD. Obviously the SSD is a boot drive, and my itunes library, working/editing library for my photography, etc is on the HDD. I occasionally unmount the HDD, because it randomly spins up and won't stay asleep even when not being used (removed spotlight indexing, and still does it, so still on the hunt for the problem using sudo fs_usage | grep and logging) and is noisy, sapps power, and I have no need for it to be mounted. Changed the spindown time to 1 minute (sudo pmset -a disksleep 1). Anyhoo currently im running an automated shell script to mount/unmount with a few hotkeys
Issue I didn't forsee though;
If TM runs while its unmounted, it will delete it from the backup, then when its remounted, it will do a full backup of the drive. I do need its contents backed up, so its not something I can exclude. First first thought would be to change the script to both mount and unmount the two disks together (internal HHD and backup external HHD), but I'm not sure how exactly I would go about this since they wouldn't always be mounted at the same time. (I keep one backup disk at home and one at my office, and have a script to change TM backup disk (tmutil setdestination mount_point)
Any ideas or recommandations?

So as you can see, its unable to backup my 2nd internal drive, starts deleting the old backups to make room, then re-backs up the whole drive after a deep scan.

TS1559 I have two problems but since they both started at the same time I'm guessing that they are related. My WiFi on/off button is greyed out AND my iCloud Drive (under "Settings") has been "Upgrading" with that spinning download symbol for 2 wks now! N

I cant be positive but I think this started when my iPhone did an automatic software update. I couldn't get any WiFi connection because when I go to turn it back on the iPhone wont let me and Greys out my WiFi on/off button.
But also I think something happened to my iCloud connect as well because next to my iCloud Drive under "Settings" it has that spinning symbol that usually denotes waiting for something to finish downloading. But this time it never stopped! Its been spinning saying "iCloud is Upgrading" for 2 weeks now! I have tried the on/off iPhone restart or reset, and I've even put my iPhone into "Recovery Mode" as a last resort. but when iTunes was finished "Restoring" it, nothing had changed; Still Greyed out WiFi button and iCloud is still "Upgrading"! Help please!

return true;returning the result TRUE when both fields are not null
And this statement -
elsif ((p_select_list is null) and (p_text_field is null)) then
return true;returning the result TRUE again when both fields are null. If you see closely basically is not validating becoz it returning true whatever the input is.
I do not know what you want to use the second statement when you have else statement at the end. It will return false if one or both fields are null unless you want to validate either text field.

Hi I read that i need proprietary drivers for my Radeon 8500LE (R200) because open source driver doesn`t support tv-out but Fglrx support my card only up to 8.28 version. I found legacy 8.28 driver in AUR but it requirements patch for kernel and if i want to update kernel I must again patch it
It`s any another way to use my tv out ?
It possible to find f.e. private repo with this older driver, I tried but it bring any result

ESATA and "housed" internal drive connection to MACBook

Hello,
I have a MAC Pro and old style white MACBook. As a fallback in case my MAC Pro gives up the ghost once we have moved out of Apple Support territory (could be 4 years), it has been suggested that I might take an external Drive housing with me so I would be able to access my data in the event the unthinkable would happen to my 3 year old MAC Pro with four hard drives... Would I be able to use an eSATA connection (don't know what it is but guessing its a plug in type adapter for the SATA connection... I think that means it will not connect to the MACBook. Is that right?
What is the best connection I could make to the MACBook noting it does have a FW400 port? Any recommendations on a housing or alternative idea would be gratefully received.

If the hard drive you linked to is the drive you have, you can get an external SATA drive enclosure. Depending on your preference, you can get one that connects via USB, Firewire, or both (the choice is yours). You just need to make sure that you get an SATA enclosure. Here are some examples:

Tiger and two internal drives on G-4--Master & Slave

Guys/Gals:
I have a 933 MHz Quicksilver Mac with which can handle the ATA 133 since it was an ULtra ATA though the Baracuda Seagate was a ATA IV.
Knowing this I tried to install the Max Ultra ATA/133 drive kit . I really tried to follow the on-line instructions from Maxtor for an Mac--but I missed the instructions in the Maxtor Drive manual which is highly Windoz oriented.
I had a devil of a time getting the drive to show up on my desk top so I could format it.
After a lot of experimenting and frustgration, I rebooted and inserted Tiger CD and now formatted the volume totally in HFS+ after switching the drive arround and changing the jumper settings on the Maxtor.
All is in working order now.
I do have a secondary issue:
Can I place the opperating system on this drive Maxtor now even though it is a slave to the smaller Baracuda 60 GB master drive?

You can put the OS onto any properly formatted disk/volume/partition. I have my two HDs partitioned and have three Tiger, two Panther, and two OS 9 boot partitions.

Building a Raid-0 with two out of four internal drives?

Hello everyone
I have four drives in my MacPro:
1) OS+Apps
2) Virtualization
3) iTunes
4) empty
My iTunes library fills drive 3 and I am close to having a full drive.
I would like to 'span' my iTunes library over to drive 4 and was thinking about building a Raid-0 on drives 3) and 4).
Can I do this without any additonal software and hardware?
Do I simply do that in Disk Utility?
Can you foresee any limitations to that setup (except for fault tolerance)?
I assume performance is also sufficient as after all it is only for iTunes.
I am not worried about drive crashes as I can back-up the spanned drives externally
Any thoughts?

Quick follow-up information from the disk utility help menu:
"Using several disks as a single volume with a concatenated RAID set
If you need to set up two or more disks or volumes to work together as a single, large volume, you can create a concatenated RAID set. You can even increase the size of a concatenated disk set after it's been created by dragging more disks to it in Disk Utility. This RAID set is helpful if you have a file, such as a database, that's larger than any of the disks you have. Or you may need to create a mirrored or striped RAID set with one large disk and two smaller disks.
If you booted your computer from a disk that has multiple partitions, you cannot create a RAID set that contains partitions from your boot disk. To create a RAID disk that contains partitions from that disk, you must boot your computer from another disk or the Mac OS X Install disk first.
You cannot remove individual disks from a concatenated disk set."
So it seems I can add disks whenever I want but once added I can't remove them...

Time machine error when backing up iMac with internal flash and sata internal drives.

will appear to be backing up and then as just about done, shows Time Machine Error message and ask you to
try again later, if problem persists, repair backup disk with disc utility. Neither solution works.
