Taking out the S430 optical drive

Hey!
I recently got my S430 and quickly realised that I don't have any need for an optical drive at all. I thought at first that I could maybe swap in a hdd but according to this thread, there is no such drive ;~;
Nevertheless, I would like to ask if I can simply remove the optical drive in order to just save weight. Would this leave a big hole on the side, or can I remove the outer edge of the drive and place it back on the laptop body to cover the gap?
Thanks for any assistance!

Hi,
That information is wrong. You can buy it http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=Lenovo+S430&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313&_nk...
To replace it there are three screws (two for the keyboard plus one for the caddy).
I know since I did just that. I don't even know why would I need a DVD RW.
Regarding the other question: if you just remove it, it will leave a huge hole on the side. And the DVD reader weight is almost nothing.
Cheers.
If I helped you, please give me some kudos! ^^

  • How do I rename the 2 optical drives in a mac pro

    On the Mac Pro (OSX 10.6.8), using Toast to copy a CD, I often find that the "read" phase assumes I am going to "write" to a disc in the same Superdrive, even though there are two of them. The superdrives both have identical names, so selecting the drive is guesswork.
    I've tried quite a few searches on both the Apple forums & Google, to find out if it's possible to rename these two drives (ie, in the same way that Windows allocates a drive letter to each).

    Nope.
    Once upon a time when ATA busses offered Master and Slave settings you could set one as Master, and Toast would automatically show that as the first optical drive on the list. It all went away once they went to cable select settings on the ATA.
    I had/have the SAME issue and it got so thoroughly frustrating that I pulled one of the super-drives, (Pioneer DVR-112) installed it in an external case and stuffed a used $5 DVD-rom drive from Goodwill in the second slot.
    (Actually, given how hard it is to find ATA DVD burners, you could do a lot worse than to put one aside for limited use. I'd give anything to get another DVR-112.)

  • Can I use the 2nd Optical Drive Bay on my Mac Pro for an SSD?

    Since I have no plans to add a second Optical Drive to my Mac Pro in the Second Optical Drive bay, I was wondering if I could put an SSD in that bay using a 2.5' to 3.5" drive carriage. Is this possible? Would it work? Would I be able to use it as my boot drive? Never tried this, so not sure if it would work.
    Thanks in advance.

    Your 2010 model has SATA wiring in that bay, so the SSD plugs right in.
    Macs can boot from the drive specified in System preferences > Startup Disk.
    You would need an adapter from 2.5 size of the drive to the 5.25 (CD drive) size expected, but since there are no moving parts, most folks just dump the drive in there without a bracket.
    The biggest payback comes from establishing a Boot Drive with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden Unix files including Paging/Swap. Putting the boot drive on an SSD is frosting -- it provides an incremental improvement over a spinning Boot drive.
    A caution when establishing your drive -- some users have killed brand new SSD drives by cloning onto them. The manufacturers have not been helpful in telling us why this happens, but a clean Install may be a better way to proceed.

  • Taking out the +

    I have a 24-page A4 job where I design a medical journal in English and am now having to prepare the same for for translation into other languages by a third party.
    The document is quite a complex one, with quite a lot of detailed paragraph and character styles. It also has numerous charts with annotation and needs to have a very clear sequence of how the text reads (it is for eye surgery in many cases so rather important it is clear what comes next!)
    The translation service require me to follow a fairly lengthy list of technical requirements and one stipulates that none of the text may have the + symbol appearing on any of the paragraph styling. As the document is so fiddly, it is often the case that paragraphs are manually tweaked to enable a clean fit, often slight tracking, tiny amounts of leading and so on.
    I have ben working through the document, selecting each block of text and reapplying the para styles so that the + is taken out (by holding down alt key as I click on the para style in its palette).
    So... my question is:
    Is there any way of taking out the + symbols through the whole document without having to wade through it all bit by bit?
    PS Sorry - meant to say is ID CS4
    Ah - think I've found it: select all > clear overrides (in paragraph styles palette menu). Now I just select all in each text frame rather than para by para - much better!

    As the formatting wonk in a translation firm, please allow me to thank you for actually doing this. The kind of client we all want to have! FYI, this means that they're going to be using a computer-aided translation tool, so the styling will ostensibly be perfectly preserved and not manually tweaked by a translator whose expertise lies in eye surgery, not in setting type.

    Because a vast amount of what I do involves flowing styled RTFs into InDesign and clearing overrides, I like to use keyboard shortcuts. All of my character and paragraph styles have a keyboard shortcut, which are all on the numpad. So, my "Clear Overrides" shortcut is Control+Shift+NumEnter. (And I have clear-overrides keyboard shortcuts for cell styles, too, if you use those to manage your charts and et cetera.

  • Networking iMac w/ a Netbook to use the iMac optical drive

    I have a new iMac and a new Netbook. The Netbook is running Windows XP, Home, SP3.
    Netbooks do not come with optical drives.
    I am trying to determine if it is even possible to network the two in such a way that I could access the iMac's optical drive from the Netbook in order to install software from a CD onto the Netbook.
    Am I just wasting my time here or is this possible???
    Anyone know?

    Boot into your BIOS and see what options there are. Some can be configured to use USB CDs, USB flash drives, I have one board (not Netbook obviously) with bootable eSATA.
    And check out online forum for your machine. Took me a while to find TweakTown and others that had forum for my board.

  • What is the best optical drive for MacPro (early 2008) ?

    I am having my MacPro optical drive repaired but I wish to add a new one in the second bay.
    I have come to know that the Apple Store does not sell it separetely and do not know what to buy.
    Suggestions?
    Thank you.

    Mac Pro 3,1 also has two extra SATA ports, easy enough to run a cable from one or both of them to the optical drive bays. But if you want to use the connectors that are already in the optical drive bays get one of these:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007589%2060000370 5&IsNodeId=1&name=IDE
    Or get a SATA drive. I put a Blue Ray drive in so I can burn data to those, I have an LG
    WH12LS38 that was plug and play (I think I had to order a SATA cable for it).

  • Taking Out The SIM Card Wears Out The SIM Tray

    I wanted to take the SIM tray out of my (black) iPhone 3G just to check the SIM card out. It slightly wears out the area around the hole on the SIM tray to do that, it looks exactly what would happen to cheap plastic. Did anyone else remove the SIM card from their iPhone 3G? Which color is it? Does it look a little weared out after doing that? I'm a little *****d off, I just got my iPhone 3G and if I want to take out the SIM tray, I have to wear it out a little? Is the plastic really that cheap...?
    Do you guys think that there's any way that Apple will let me swap out just the SIM tray for a new tray? Everything else about my iPhone 3G is almost flawless, and I wouldn't want to swap out the whole phone for this. I think that the SIM tray is made out of cheaper plastic than the rest of the phone, which is noticable when you take the tray out. Here's my advice: DON'T TAKE THE SIM TRAY OUT! You'll probably regret it afterwards.

    My new iPhone, I could not even find where the sim holder was. I had to search the manual for info and I did not know about the sim extraction tool in the box.
    When I knew where the cover was I had to use strong light and my strong reading glasses to see it, it was really that flush.
    There was no hole for the sim tool or paper clip that I used, not realising that a sim tool was on the box cover. I had to punch through to reveal the hole and actually break out the sim holder.
    Not for the faint hearted with a brand new precious object in hand, but it had to be done and now the hole is very obvious and the aperture is very clear, even with my normal glasses.

  • Copy jpgs together, taking out the color White

    hello
    I've spent all night looking around for how to do this and each example avoids the problem i'm having.
    i have a jpg (type BGR). i want to copy in another image (also BGR). where ever the second image is white, i want to take out those pixels (transparent them) so you can see the first image.
    if i make the first image ABGR, or any four channel it changes the image horribly..red=blue, blue=green or something like that.
    i've seen examples on bringing in a gif with transparency, scaling it and keeping the transparancy.. but in the end i'm going to make a jpg that can be used on a browser and i dont need transparancy on the whole thing, and the source isn't going to have any. i just want to wipe out the whites on the second image.

    I ma ont very sure where you are having the problem or how you are doing the copying of one image to another.
    what do u mean by white? In RGB model, white mean R=G=B=255 (perfect white).
    so you should check if the pixel has R=G=B=255. you have to know if the images are in RGb or ARGB
    I would suggest:
    for(int i=0;i<buffImage1.getWidth();i++)
      for(int j=0;j<buffImage1.getHeight();j++)
          if(isWhite(buffImage2.getRGB(i,j))
               buffImage2.setRGB(buffImage1.getRGB()); //replace image2's pixel by image1's pixel.
    //at this point u have image2 with its white pixels replaced by pixels from image1
    private boolean isWhite(int pixel)
    return (getRed(pixel) ==getGreen(pixel)==getBlue(pixel) && getRed(pixel)==255);
    public int getRed(int pixel) {
         return (pixel>> 16) & 0xFF;
    public int getGreen(int pixel) {
         return (pixel>> 8) & 0xFF;
    public int getBlue(int pixel) {
         return (pixel>> 0) & 0xFF;
    }now this should work but one thing you must note is that if one image is in RGB and other in ARGB, then in the code
               buffImage2.setRGB(buffImage1.getRGB()); might not correctly set the pixel. If it does not (and I guess this is where you are having the problem), try extracting the RGB explicitly:
       if(isFirstImageARGB())
               int argb = buffImage1.getRGB()); //image 1 is in ARGB
              //extract RGB from ARGB
              int rgb = getRed(pixel)<<16| getGreen(pixel)<<8| getBlue(pixel());
               buffImage2.setRGB(rgb); //image 2is in RGB
    else //both images are in RGB
          buffImage2.setRGB(buffImage1.getRGB()); I have not complied and check this code. This is just an idea I feel should be used.
    Hope it helps

  • Opening and using the second optical drive?

    Okay, I have a dummy question about my new Mac Pro. I got it with two optical super drives. I'm burning one disc right now, but I need to know how I can burn on the second drive. I'm thinking if I click on the eject button to open the second drive, that it will open up the first instead. I probaby should know the answer to this one, but it's just not obvious to me.
    Thanks ahead of time for the answer.

  • The bad optical drive

    I have been using my Mac mini for months and I'm very happy with it. But there is one problem in it. The Combo drive is always noisy, OK, I don't really mind. The biggest problem is it can't read some disks properly. Two music CDs that I bought (which are completely legal) always crash the Mac when I try to play them in iTunes. Those Copy Control crap shouldn't have any impact on it. All other disks play well in the drive. I wonder what's the problem. I'm sure it's not the problem of the 2 CDs. They can play well on another PC and a DVD player.
    Also I want to ask do I have have to quit some other apps when I import CDs in iTunes? Is the speed brought down by other apps? I was importing a CD and playing a game at the same time, and it felt like I was back at my old PC (all things crashed). Was that too much work for my Mac?
    (This is my first post, by the way.)

    Welcome to the discussion group, and your first post here!
    It has been widely reported in the past that many copy protection mechanisms used on some CDs do indeed prevent them from being played on various computer systems, and the record labels who have used such schemes have had high levels of complaints from customers as a result. It's that which I suspect caused Sony to use their new form of protection which has rightly been universally condemned as little short of spyware.
    Thus Will is right, it would help to know which CDs these are, to be able to work out if there is any copy protection involved that may be causing your problem.
    But there are other possible issues too. Macs in general can be very fussy about CD quality, and as a result, CDs with scratches, fingerprints or that are badly 'pressed' can refuse to play or rip to iTunes completely (or in part). You might try cleaning the problem CDs and see whether that helps. There's also a check box in the advanced tab of iTunes preferences, under 'importing' to switch on error correction when importing into iTunes and which can help when ripping CDs that have imperfections. Enabling this feature tends to slow the ripping process somewhat, but it has helped me when importing CDs that otherwise failed.
    Importing CDs to iTunes is simply a matter of streaming data, and as such in the Mac mini where the device controllers are less sophisticated than in G5 systems, it is somewhat dependent on what else the system is doing. As a result I would have expected a game being actively played at the time to impact on performance to some degree - though not necessarily greatly. Slow import can also be an indicator of problems with the CD itself. It might be worth trying to import the same CD with no other process running, and see if that is markedly better. If it is, the game was obviously hijacking the processor and hogging the system's data bus. If not, it's the drive or CD at fault.

  • I have a B200 error message on my Canon MP560. I tried taking out the ink cartriges etc. to no avail

    I have a B200 error message on my Canon MP560. I followed the posting that said to take the ink cartriges out, lift the grey bar and remove the printer board. I did that, replaced it after a few minutes, replaced the cartriges, turned the printer off and unplugged it. After waiting well over 10 minutes, I plugged it back in and when it was turned it on, the same message came up.
    Now what?
    Thanks,

    I'm glad I was able to help.  I kind of wish mine hadn't worked because I ended up being one of the "lucky" individuals where my phone didn't restore from the backup and I lost all of my contacts, calendar appts, notes, etc.  It took me an extra 2 hrs last night to rebuild the next month worth of appts and try to rebuild my contact list from my yahoo contacts.  Oh well.  I will be getting an android at my next upgrade.  I'm tired of all of the BS that comes with owning an iPhone.

  • Taking out and repurposing internal drives

    Hi, this is more about retiring my 2004 PMG5. The boot drive is the original. But I installed a new 2nd 1TB drive about a year ago. Can I remove that new drive and put it in a drive enclosure as an external drive for my new Intel Mac? If yes, please point me to procedures for doing just that.
    Thanks very much. Will

    Yes you can, you just need a SATa enclosure such as this...

  • Try out the AMD processor driver!

    I don't know how many of you are aware of the AMD Athlon 64 processor driver. I didn't know about it at first. It doesn't appear to be well advertized. It does a good job of lowering CPU temperatures. It decreased my average CPU temp by about 8C. From the AMD web site:
    According to AMD:
    AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP allows the system to automatically adjust the CPU speed, Voltage and Power combination that match the instantaneous user performance need. The Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP may be used on both Athlon™ 64 Processor Mobile and Athlon™ 64 Cool 'n' Quiet enabled platforms.
    To download the driver go to:
    http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/Athlon64driver-1101_.ZIP
    The directions for installing it is included. What is less obvious however is that for you to see any of the cooling effect you must select "Minimal Power Management" in the power options control panel applet.

    Hi,
      My system was working till I decided to install SP3. After some time the system would crash at random. I checked the net and renamed intelppm.sys hoping that this would solve the problem. Also, re-installed  AMD processor driver.
      After sometime I re-installed XP with sp2. Again installed AMD processor Driver 1.3.2 and the system would BSOD as soon as I would try to change "Power Options" to "Minimal .." in XP with error: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and (0x0000000A). Is the processor driver buggy ?
      Cool 'n' Quiet use to work without any issues before this problem :(
    regards.
    Do you use Virtual PC or such?
    Well navigate to CPU driver in device manager, then right click over it and select "Roll Back Driver". Reboot and see how it goes.
