Taking remote backup from sun machine

Hai,
I am having a Linux machine and Sun Ultra 10 machine Linux machine is a fileserver with tape drive configured and the home directories of the users from the linux server are mounted to the sun machine and the users are able to login in the sun machine I want to take remote back up of all the data from sun machine to the Linux server. Can anybody help me out in this matter. On my Linux server nfsserver is running and on the sun machine nfs client is running. Please help me in this matter.
Please give me some suggestions how can i do this as early as possible.

It sounds like you would like the Sun machine to act as an NFS server. A simple way to start the server is to edit the file /etc/dfs/dfstab. Place a line in the file which
will share the filesystems you would like to backup, then
reboot the system. The dfstab file is self documented, plus you can lookup the manpage dfstab(4) or take a look at the
System Administrator documentation.

The only officially supported backup method is USB drive plugged in.. and it is slow and cannot be automated either. Didn't you know the TC is supposed to last forever and be totally 100% immune to failure!! Any method you dream up to backup the TC other than a drive plugged in involved copy files to a computer and then to another backup.. as it cannot work directly from the TC itself.. that is why it is not a NAS and does not have the standard capabilities like rsync of a NAS.
I recommend if you have 7 Macs backing up, you get a mini or something cheap and set it up with external drive, and use that for Time Machine. Also use CC or SuperDuper to make an image of each of the computers occasionally as it seems a much better and faster method to restore a computer to working order.

  • Unable to recieve any logs from Sun machine....

I'm using Sun Solaris v10 and i have problem in receiving logs from sun machine. The syslog server is my windows which i want my sun machine to sends logs to (windows machine is ALIVE on default port 514).

    *192.168.50.253 asad loghost*
All this but my syslog server remains empty of any logs yet.
Is there a way where i could explicitly make Sun machine to generate logs by invoking some methods......as for now its taking for ever to generate logs by the machine.
Please rectify this problem as I have reached a dead-end making sense of the logging mechanism proposed by the sun machine.

Try replacing any space characters in the lines you added to syslog.conf with tabs.

It depends how you installed it.
If you installed from your iLife 11 DVD, then you can insert the DVD and install it again.
If you purchased it from the Mac App Store, you can open the Mac App Store, go to the Purchases tab, and reinstall from there.

I'm using Yosemite 10.10.3 and Photos. i have tried repair database, but no success .

  • If you remove a backup from Time Machine, can you add it later?

if you remove a backup from Time Machine, can you add it back later? I have two backup sets active, but only one is connecting to a drive at the moment. It seems to be pausing TM for the inactive one, which is as I would expect, except that the menu icon for TM shows an exclamation point (= "waiting to backup"). I'd rather have that error / pause sign show if the ACTIVE connected drive is experiencing issues. It has zero diagnostic function as currently set up.
The solution would be to remove the backup drive from the TM list and then add it back later. I am just unsure if I can do this (will TM recognize the alternate backup set again if I re-add it?)
    tx

    Yes, you can re-add it.

  • Deleting Backups from Time Machine to Make Room

Deleting Backups from Time Machine to Make Room
So, I went into my 1.5 terabyte back-up drive and deleted a number of the TM backups because the drive was getting too full. (I also use that drive to store “permanent” photo files in other folders.)
Evidently, the computer does not recognize the deletions because the drive shows the same miniscule amount of space as it did prior to the deletions.
I know people have talked about using “actions” button in the gear icon. However, I can’t find that.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Tek

    Thanks for the reply, V.K.
    Unfortunately, I deleted via the finder and then emptied the trash. :-}
I know now, (after the fact) that this was the wrong thing to do. However, I didn’t find a “delete” option within TM.
It all seemed “logical” at the time. . . and quite frankly, still does. Why the heck is TM so difficult to control? Why can’t one just set it for X number of backups and have an easy to access delete button? (grumble, grumble)
I looked at the FAQs, but am still not clear on how to find the “action” button. I am using a laptop with no “right click” feature. The mouse is a one piece model.
My backup drive is directly attached, but, only when I want to backup since I work on a MB pro laptop.
    So please:
    How do I correct this?
Do I need to format the backup drive and partition? I don’t want/need so many backups cluttering my drive. I need space for permanent photo archives which are very large. These are now merely in a separate folder on the backup drive.

  • How can I restore an old iPhone backup from Time Machine?

    Hi there,
I lost my iPhone 4S but have a extra iPhone 4 (used for travel) that I would like to restore the 4S backup to.
The problem is that the backup of my 4S has somehow disappeared from itunes and the only one that shows up is the iPhone 4 backup even though they are set up as different devices with different names. I know that the backup for my 4S is included with my Time Machine backups (on external harddrive) but I can't find the files. Also very strange is that I don't have the folder "MobileSync" in /Library/Application Support/MobileSync on my computer. I can't find that folder anywhere.
My computer is less that 6 months old and I know that I have not deleted that folder or any other that are preinstalled.
I'm using OS X 10.9.4 and I don't want to restore my hole computer from Time Machine, just the files that hold my 4S backup.
Also note that I have not backed up everything from my 4S phone to iClould so that's not an option.
    I've tried everything including:
    - Restoring the settings on the iPhone 4 to factory settings and then connecting to itunes.
    - Deleting itunes and restoring it from Time Machine at a date that i knew had the original iphone backup.
Who ever can solve this for me deserves a gold medal. I'm truly desperate. I've searched all forums and haven't found a solution for this.
    Thanks.

    Correct.
You need to go to ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/.
The ~ indicates your User folder not the top level /Library/ folder.
Click on the desktop, then hold Option and go to Finder menu Go and Library will be there (only when holding Option as it is hidden).

  • How can I restore an old backup from Time Machine to my iPhone 5?

I have the iPhone 5 that I had previously transferred my apps and other data to from my iPhone 4. Due to poor battery life, I had to restore the iPhone 5 as a new phone. This helped battery life but now I habve lost my text messages, App data and photos. I use Time Machine on my Mac so whayt do I need to do to get the data back on my phone. I'd like to do this without restoring the phone but rather syncing it with data recovered from Time Machine. I don't want to screw up the battery life again.

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html

  • After Restoring your computer to Factory Settings How do you restore backups from Time Machine? Help!

I have Restored my Computer to Factory Settings and Now I'm trying to restore the backups from my Time Matchine. I've already done the Migration Assistant things. But I dont know where to find my details or where my files are.
Everything is in different spots then where it was when i started this process.
    HELP

Restoring from Time Machine and using Migration Assistant are either/or options... either restore from a Time Machine backup or restore by using Migration Assitant. You don't write which version of OS X you're running, so it's kind of difficult to tell you where to begin (or start over).
If you're running Lion or Mountain Lion, I would boot into the Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting) and use Disk Utility to erase your boot volume. Then, with your TM drive connected, restore your latest backup to your newly formatted volume. You can do the same by using the installation disc that has Snow Leopard on it, just with a few extra steps.
    See http://www.pondini.org/TM/14.html.
    Good luck,

  • How to restore a backup from time machine in 10.6.8

I am running 10.6.8 on my MacPro (early 2008). I have 4 internal hard drives. The main boot drive has 10.6.8 and the secondary drive with a system has Lion. I cannot completely upgrade to Lion on my main drive until all my software is compatible.
My main boot drive started acting like it's in slow motion 2 days ago. No matter what I do (DiskWarrior, Disk Utility, zap PRAM, fix permissions) nothing seems to help. Every mouse click or movement gives me the dreaded spinnin wheel and it hangs for about 5 min and then does what it's supposed to do. I have logged into a new account w/ no special 3rd party apps or utilities and it still does the same thing. Hard drive diagnostics say my hard drive is ok. I have tried reinstalling the 10.6.8 combo update but that hangs after a few minutes of  starting. I am stymied.
I thought about restoring a Time Machine backup from 1 day before this happened, but before I attempt a full disk backup, need to ask what to do so as not lose everything.
I assume I must boot up from another disk or hard drive, correct? Can I simply select all the system folders and apps folder or do you think I should do a complete restore?
    Thanks.

Could be a failing drive, could be Lion when you boot doing something
Disconnect all other drives etc., except the 10.6.8 boot drive, lets flush everything.
hold Shift upon booting, this is Safe mode and fixes things, reboot
    then SMC reset, PRAM reset
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html
Run all of OnyX checks, maintainance and cleaning then reboot at the end
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
If you have AppleJack already installed hold command S at startup of 10.6.8 and Applejack AUTO and press enter.
    http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
This mega cocktail will do plenty to rebuild everything and may catch your issue.
If your still having problems I would try to isolate it, if it occurs only if your connected to the Internet, or after the machine has booted Lion etc.
Narrow it down. It might be failing sectors on the drive, this has been known to cause beachballs as the hardware is trying to read from failing sectors, once it gets the information it should be transfering it to a new better sector and mapping off the bad one.
You can expidite this process when you fresh install, by erasing the entire drive (or Free space only) with Zero function in Disk Utility before laying large amounts of data on the drive. (like a OS or partition)
    Good Luck

  • How to exculde the second hard drive backup from time machine of lion os

My Mac Pro 2010 mid version is using Mac Lion OS, and I have installed three internal hard drives (two 3T hard drives for storage one 2T hard drive for time machine hard drive). When I start to run the time machine to backup the system hard drive, the time machine will include those internal hard drives automatically, and it stop backup and claim time machine is lack of storage space. Of course I know it is not big enough to backup those extra hard drive. However, I just only need to backup the system drive only, but I cannot locate any setting related how to exclude other internal hard drive in time machine. So I still cannot backup my system drive yet.

  • Cannot retrieve old backups from time machine

Two weeks ago I brought my iMac to the apple store for the hard drive replacement program.
I backed up everything before bringing it in and deleted most of my data.
When it came back, it looked exactly the same as how I brought in. (Most things were deleted.)
I tried to restore one folder to test out the function, and then I was off to work when I saw the files transferring.
After I finished work, the files finished transferring but when I go back into time machine, all my recent backups were from today and my previous backups were all gone.
Is there any ways to retrieve my old backups?
Some of my important files were only stored in this external hard drive...
    Thank you...

    Wimek,
According to this KB article (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1760)
"When upgrading from one Leopard-based Mac to a new Leopard-based Mac, and you wish to use Time Machine backups from the previous Mac, make sure the computer name of the new Mac (in Sharing preferences) is the same as your previous Mac's computer name was when its Time Machine backups were made. Afterwards, if the previous Mac is still on your network, give it a different computer name."

  • Deleting old backups from Time Machine/Time Capsule

I've spent a long time deleting copies of old back ups from Time Machine today. In view of this am I right in assumming this should in turn reduce the size of sparsebundle on TC?  If not, please can someone tell me how I can reduce the size of sparsebundle on my 2TB TC; my MacBook has 150GB HD and my sparsebundle is 500GB in size.  I want to address the amount of backups I keep as I do not wish to have a TC clogged up with multiple monthly backups of data each month, which in my opinion is pretty redundant.

A sparsebundle file behaves differently than a normal file or folder. As you add data to the sparsebundle file, it expands as long as there is room on the drive. But, if you delete data from the sparsebundle, the size of the file remains the same, even though the data has been deleted.
You will be able to add more data to the sparsebundle, and it will continue to expand as long as there is room on the drive.
If you want to "compact" the sparsebundle file to have it indicate the exact amount of data in the file, there is a Terminal command that you can use for this purpose.
