"Talking" characters in Captivate 7

I just signed up for the monthly subscription for Captivate 7 and would like to learn how to use the Characters.
I would like to see if I can get them to "Talk", doesn't matter if I need to put the text on the screen as per some of the samples I've seen or pre-define what I want them to say.
Is there a way of doing this?

I am afraid that you can not use Speaking Characters from Captivate . They would be added like an image.
But you can use the characters on your slide and use the text to speech feature.

Adding animated cartoon characters in Captivate 5

Does anyone know if it is possible add animated cartoon characters into Captivate 5.0? I've done some investigation and believe this can be done using a character builder (detailed on www.mediasemantics.com). I'm fairly new to Captivate so would appreciate any advice on how to add this type of animation and any problems anyone has encountered do this.

We've also used a product called Toon Boom on a project about a year ago to create animated cartoon characters and add them to a Captivate project.

Though in theory it's also AS2 output, it worked fine in Captivate AS3 content. Don't know why.

Characters in Captivate 6

I'm not able to use the Characters in Captivate 6. I tried installing them from my installation CD. That didn't work. I tried installing them from Adobe's download link. That didn't work.
What happens when I try to insert a Character is that the dialog box comes up blank. If I click Okay (even though I don't see any characters) Captivate crashes.
I'm using Captivate on Windows version 6.0.1.240.
I hope that someone can give me a clue how to insert a character.

Characters have to be downloaded and installed separately (eLearning Assets) With a default installation they should be located here:
\users\Public\Public Documents\Adobe\eLearning Assets\Characters
The Preferences folder is labeled Captivate 6.0 and is to be found in the user profile (it is a system folder)
\users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\Adobe
You can delete cache in the Preferences, there is a button "Clear cache" in the General Settings under the Default File Locations.

Downloading all eLearning Assets Characters in Captivate 6

Can I download all eLearning Asset Characters at the same time instead of individually?

I know this thread is somewhat dead but I thought I'd post this anyway, just so a solution in on this record. I'm using the Adobe Captivate Subscription version 8, but these steps have worked for me for as long as I can remember, for both subscription and product-based applications:
1. Sign in to your Adobe Account.
2. Click on Plans and Products Icon.
3. Under Order History, click on View Your Orders.
4. Click on the appropriate order for Captivate.
5. Under the product title you should see a download link. Click on that.
6. You should see all the related downloads including the Captivate application, NeoSpeech, and the eLearning Assets.
Following these steps I just tested and reinstalled the application and eLearning assets which includes a couple dozen characters sets with many poses per character.
Hint: I tend to avoid the Akamai downloader and download the files directly using the "+ Alternate Download Method" link. Just my preference.
The important thing to remember is that Adobe puts the product downloads in the orders section, not the product section. This seems counter-intuitive but they've done it the same way for years.

Working with Characters and Backgrounds in Captivate 6

Hello,
I'm trying to insert art from E-Learning Art as a background for the characters in Captivate 6, and I'm having two problems:
1) I added one picture (.jpg photograph) and it shows up on every slide. It is not in the master slides, and I do not want it on every slide. How do I remove the picture from the slides where I want to put another background?
2) When I preview my slides, the characters have an obvious white line around them and in some cases a glow. Any suggestions for correcting this?

Please check :
1) Select the Charatcer on your slide-- Properties -- Timing, make sure the timing is not show for rest of the project, that way it will show up through out.
2) Please check the properties have you applied a shadow or reflection, that could cause a possible glow to the character

Captivate 8 Trying to use Characters but they're not showing up

I have downloaded and installed eLearning assets to be able to use Characters but still when going to Media>Characters in Captivate there is nothing showing in any of the character types drop down selections. The installation put the Characters folder in the following path:
c:\users\public\documents\elearningAssets\Characters_8.0
Anyone know if that is the correct path for Captivate 8 to find them? It seems to me that in Captivate 7 it was possible to browse to find them if somehow the path got messed up but Captivate 8 doesn't have a browse option so I'm thinking if they're in the wrong place I can move them to the correct place so that Captivate 8 can find them.
Would appreciate any help you can provide.

I am having the same problem. I was running Captivate 7 - no problem with characters. Added Captivate 8 to same machine - no problems with characters except I didn't have all the ones I had in Captivate 7. Then, just recently opened Cp8 - no characters. Opened Cp7 - no characters. Reinstalled Asset files - no characters. I checked the adress above and I see folders with png files for the hi and low images. I deleted Preferences using the .bat file for both Cp7 and Cp8 - no characters. Uninstalled Cp7 - no characters in Cp8. Cleared Preferences again in Cp8 - no characters.
Any other ideas? Thanks.

Audio problem with Captivate

Can anyone help?
I have created a sound bite for a Captivate slide. All works
well within Captivate interface. re: Play this slide. However, when
I try to preview ... no audio! When I publish to SWF ... no audio!
Research on Adobe site tells me there is an issrue with Flash on
the first slide and to change start timing to 0.1 secs. Did that!
Still no luck.
Can this be resolved? Please help!

If Adobe support assured you that CP4 will run on Vista 64-bit without any problems then they don't know what they are talking about.
Captivate 4 does not run on Vista 64-bit and the problems you are describing are identical to the ones I have on my Vista 64-bit system.

Streaming Captivate

I was just reading an article in an enewsletter Training Tech
Talk about streaming Captivate. It brought up some solutions that
others in this forum could use.
One suggestion was to make several movies that are 10 minutes
long each and have each movie play when the other ends. (That
suggestion may have been stated in this forum as well).
Another sugtestion is to use software that comverts swf files
to MP4 format. The address for this software is www.sothink.com and
the person who suggested it was very please with the results. He
records one hour long training sessions.
There is another software that converts swf files to video
and it is www.clipstream.com

Flash video (.flv) not loading under HTTPS (SSL)

Hi,
We have developed a rich media eLearning simulation
application that dynamically loads separate .FLVs (animated talking
characters). The client implementation is in a learning management
system on an internal HTTPS connection. The FLVS do not work on
this LMS server but DO work when they open the same application
from our external (to the client) test web server (e.g. plain and
simple HTTP).
The PCs are the same machines. They are connecting from
within the same LAN (behind the firewall) e.g. all conditions are
exactly the same except for the HTTP/HTTPS difference.
The client is checking that the server MIME types are
correctly specified (it is believed that they are).
So...any advice why HTTPS/SSL might affect the FLV loading?
For reference: We are compiling in Flash 9. Client players
are running 9.0.124.0. All the files reside on the server(s) e.g.
no cross-domain file issues.

Adobe E-Learning Assets All 1.0 - Is there a way to choose an alternate destination folder?

I typically use my OS drive (C:\) for my OS and place all my programs and assets on the (D:\) drive. Is there a way to install them somewhere else?

It by default installs elearning assets on the C: Drive.
Can you try installing it as it is on the default location and then check the charactes in Captivate after launching it?
If you still cannot find characters inside Captivate, then try to manually copy the elearning assets folder from C: drive and paste it to the similar path on D: drive under Documents.

No Audio in Slide Play

I just upgraded to Captivate 2.0. I recorded audio for each
slide, but can not manipulate the timing in Edit because I can not
hear the audio. If I preview them I can hear the audio. I did
notice that before I preview the audio converts to mp files. Is
this the problem?

I'm not sure I understand your issue. You say you recorded
audio. Got that. Where I'm totally confused is when you say you
cannot manipulate timing in Edit. Are you talking about the
Captivate slide editor where you adjust placement of objects such
as text captions or click boxes? Or are you talking about the
Captivate audio editor? Where are you not able to hear the audio?
If you are saying it happens when you play the slide via F3
or the Spacebar (where you preview right in the slide editor) I'm
wondering if you have managed to mute audio in the editor. Look
just below the Timeline. Just below the column where you would
click the lock. Do you see a tiny little speaker icon? Try clicking
that icon a single time and then see if you have audio.

How do I collect user information without using an LMS?

I have been using Captivate 5 to create training modules that we host on our own site. The modules are information driven and have no testing included. Our clients would like us to collect information from the user to track who has viewed the module. All we need is their name and employee number. Is there a way to accomplish this without having the user send an email?

It sounds like you're publishing your Captivate content as htm/swf output?
If so and you have access to the services of a web developer, you can use Javascript in the web browser to pass the user information from Captivate out to the browser. Once in the browser, you can then do anything with the data that your web developer can dream up.
Jim Leichliter wrote a great series of articles that cover the basics of accessing Captivate variables using JavaScript. This article in particular talks about passing Captivate variables out to the browser:

Assessment questions in LearnCenter LMS

Gentlefolk;
I am looking for someone who has experience using Captivate v. 4 in the LearnCenter/Taleo LMS.
I have created assessments in SCORM 1.2 format for the LearnCenter, and they track and score properly. Learn has the ability to display results at the question level - who responded how to which question. I have a client who wants this.
But the Learn Report Builder tool is not picking up assessments created by Captivate 4. It will display this level of detail with assessments built with its own assessment tool, but that is such an arduous tool to work with, I have abanded that for Captivate. I thought SCORM was SCORM and I could get the Learn report system to display the question-level detail.
Not happenin' for me, however.
Is there anyone out there with this experience and can assist me in figuring out what I am doing wrong?

Hmmm..and maybe I have my answer. I had run the SCORM settings basically at their default settings. Worked well enough and the Learn LMS could talk to the Captivate data, so I was pretty happy.
But under Reporting Level, I have used Report Score, and NOT Interactions and Score. Will the Interactions and Score give me the question-level responses I am seeking?
