Talking Computer that won't shut up!

OK I have been using Leopard since Friday and for the most part liking it except for my Western Digital MyBook hardrives no longer shutting down. Here is something that just started about an half hour ago when I was listening to iTunes radio. I turned off the radio and now wherever I move the mouse the computer "speaks" and tells me what is in the folder or what the size of the image is, etc. No settings were changed today by me today! I restarted the machine. Speakable items is off in the system preferences yet it is telling me everything I touch with the mouse. Help! Unfortunately I was not smart enough to archive my machine while running Tiger. Any ideas?
Thanks

It sounds like you've enabled VoiceOver.
Go to Universal Access preferences in System Preferences - click the 'Seeing' tab. Select 'Off' for VoiceOver.
The default keyboard shortcut for turning it on is quite obscure, so not sure how you accidentally turned it on?

  • De authorizing a computer that won't run QT

How do you deauthorize a computer that won't run quicktime, causing itunes not to launch?
Or better yet, how do you fix quicktime so it works, allowing itunes to run in the first place.

    Thanks for your reply!
My OS is posted along with my original post... XP pro... But is at the SB2 with all the latest updates via automatic updates. I can't seem to properly uninstall quicktime, as it gives me an error, and re installing gives an error as well, but I don't have those errors readily available to post at this time.
Running QT itself provides no error information. It simply doesn't run! When launched, I get an hourglass for a few moments, and it's done! That's it.
I had downloaded the latest at the time the other posting was made. I'll try again with the latest. I Don't expect any improvement.
Perhaps I'll use your recommendation and deauthorize all, and re authorize those that still work. I'll likely need to reformat and install everything on this system to get it working again as it looks.

  • Home Sharing wasn't turned on on my, now broken computer, that won't start. Now I can't syncronise my iTunes on my new computer with my iPod

I had my iPod connected to a computer that's now broken and now it won't start. Now I can't use Home Sharing on my new computer, since it wasn't turned on on my first computer, and I can't syncronise my iPod with my iTunes library. The only thing I can use iTunes for now, is to hear music from my computer... What can I do?
I'm pretty desperate for help; it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it  says place the iPod in recoverymode use one of these programs.
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    and

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Booting from remote disc on MBA that won't shut down or restart?

    Hi all,
I am trying to do an archive and install on my partner's MBA because, even after running through all the possible options with Applecare, it won't shut down or restart. I have already reinstalled the software on another machine that was having the same problem and the issue has been resolved.
My problem is, however, in trying to boot the MBA off a remote disc. I can, of course, access the Mac OSX install disc remotely from the MBA in another optical drive, but when I begin the install process and it wants to restart the MBA, the MBA hangs up and doesn't restart (because that was it's problem in the first place).
The MBA and the Mac running the install disc are both connected via ethernet through my Airport hub. As you can't simply hold the C key during startup with the MBA, I was wondering if there is any way to get the MBA to find the remote disc on start up?
    Thanks.

How did you transfer your "settings"?
If you used the Migration Assistant you are obviously transferring something that is causing an issue. Erase and reinstall Mac OS X and then manually transfer your documents to your MacBook.

  • Computer freezes, won't shut off (only restarts), and airport won't connect?

Okay, so I wrote a really long post and it got deleted before I could post it and I'm on a iPhone so my grammar might be off, so bear with me.
I have a mid 2009 macbook pro running 10.6.8. I was having problems with it recently so I brought it to Apple and they changed my hard drive and battery and I   thought I was good to go. However, my computer has been freezing a lot, especially when I move it. I can't even pick it up without risking it freezing. If audio is playing, it loops the last second over and over again. Normally, I let it sit for a hit and see if it fixes on its own, but the only way to stop it is if I do a hard reset By holding the power button down. Also, my computer doesnt shut down. When I shut it off, it automatically restarts. The only way to keep it shut down is by holding down the power button. Ive ran disk utility and it seems like everything is okay so I don't know what the problem could be, but it's very frustrating and I can't figure it out. My airport is having problems too. When I turn my computer on, I get the message "no airport card installed", but I've never gotten that message once in the past 4 years I've had the computer.  Ive reset the pram a million times And that's only a temporary fix that doesn't seem to work anymore.
I'm stuck at school, so I can't bring my computer into Apple until I get home, so I'm trying to fix this on my own, but it's proving to be way harder than anything I can deal with. I opened it up because I figured maybe the ram was loose, but it's fixed pretty tight. Is there anything I'm missing or anything I can do? In the 4 years I've had this computer I haven't had an issue, but now all of a sudden everythings going wrong.

Thanks for the input Hatter. Can you tell me how to do the fsck -fy procedure or tell me where to find the directions?
For the longest time, when I read " fsck -fy" I actually thought the writer was politely swearing. I really have no idea what it is or does, but found some sketetal instructions in the discussions, so tried it. But I don't have enough info to do it correctly.
I am more in favor of reset nvram from inside Open
    Firmware
    cmd opt of
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
which I think does a better job dealing or clearing
corrupt nvram or device tree on MDDs and later Macs.
Also, I have no idea what you are talking about, where or how to do it. Open Firmware?? Is this something I open up? where is it? etc.
Now that you mention it, buying a new hub makes sense if your other suggestions don't work.
I hope I hear from you again. Thanks for your help. Fish

  • How do I get a CD out of a computer that won't start?

My computer has been freezing up. Usually if I let it cool off a few hours it will start again, but when I tried today it froze up during startup. I've got a CD in the drive. How do I get it out without trying to reboot the computer and possibly doing more damage to it?
I don't know if the freezing is due to hardware or what. All I know is that the CPU gets really hot and then everything stops. I've vacuumed dust out of it and made sure all connections inside were tight. I've run disk utility from the Tiger DVD and it said repairs were done. But problems keep getting worse and I just don't want to try and start it again - at least not until I get Disk Warrior. Can't get the DW disk in until I get the other one out.
I'm traveling in Newfoundland and won't be able to purchase Disk Warrior or have anyone look at the computer until early September when we get back to the US.

  • Is there a way to recover your files from a computer that won't work anymore?

if my computer stops working, is there a way to recover the files?

I've been in the same situation once.
    Here's what I did:
Went to Staples and bought an external hard drive enclosure.
Took the hard drive out of the dead computer then installed it in the enclosure.
From there I hooked it up to a working computer via usb port then copied the files that I needed from it.
Assuming that your hard drive is not dead/toasted, then you can recover the data you need through this procedure.
    Hope that helps.

DID I MISS SOMETHING? PLEASE HELP!! I'M RUNNING OUT OF OPIONS

    Hello BENG2112,
You may want to consider wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS at this point. Then we can take it step by step from there. We can then try to isolate what is causing the system to break down.
I would say fresh reinstall then run the system for a bit to see if it freezes up.

  • Imac running 10.7.3 won't shut down

    Hi,
I have a new imac 3.4ghz - i7 with 16gbs ram that won't shut down unless I hold in the power button. Any idea what may be causing the issue. I checked the Console logs but that did not give me any indication of what might be hanging it up. I also, have a Macbook Pro running 10.6.8 and it has no trouble powering down.
I am running AVID Symphony which is not qualified for 10.7.4 yet so I am not going to do the update yet.

Any ideas what else i could try?
    Thanks in advance

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
