Talkmobile, iPhone 4S and tethering

Hi all,
Using iPhone 4S with a talkmobile sim, which works fine except for tethering.
The iPhone thinks it's on the Vodafone network (which it is, as TalkMobile use their network) and therefore places restrictions to tethering on the handset.
I'm unable to manually change the carrier to TalkMobile, and lift this restriction. Everything else works fine.
Anyone have any ideas? Before anyone suggests it, I don't want to jailbreak

I used to use my 3 sim, which worked fine, I didn't get a coded SMS for that. I certainly didn't ask for one, so unless it did it 'behind the scenes' or something when activating the carrier settings.
I had assumed that Personal Hotspot required such activation from some networks, but not others, which would be down to the carrier..
If I can't change it to TalkMobile, or get them to send said SMS (which they know nothing about) then my options are basically change my phone or change my carrier!
Bit rubbish

  • I have a new iPhone 5 and tethering isn't working; laptop says it can't access gateway

The personal hotspot braodcasts it's name and the laptop connects to the iphone and give internet access for about 30 seconds then suddenly it can't connect to the gateway (according to the diagnostics on my laptop [a toshiba running win 7]). It seems to come and go, but never long enough to get a webpage loaded or connect to my exchange server. I've reset the phone and restarted the laptop to no avail. Any thoughts?

Re: Anyone still having IOS 6 wifi issues?
created by mpa9366 in Using iPad - View the full discussion
Having done a lot of reading today and having found a very good online tablet magazine (will post link tomorrow) there seems to be a few tech bods onto the problem.
The magazine I was reading identified wifi problems within hours of the ios 6 release and have been analysing since then with almost daily updates - the story seems to be:
The apple authenthication transmission is normal, it should slip through event prior to a full handshake with the host network being completed - however if not authenthicated then apple will not permit the device to connect (kills the connection) this is designed to protect apple from counterfeiting. So thats problem 1 if you dont receive a token from apple.
Problem 2 is that ios 6 only supports ipv6 (the new ip protocol) whereas outside silicon valley a large proportion of routers modems etc are still ipv4 protocol.
So youre locked into ipv6 in a world where ipv4 devices are everywhere and apple have not allowed for the ability to handle both protocols. This is like GM telling you your car requires an upgrade, everything will improve etc and as part of the upgrade fits a fuel cell motor and stays silent when their upgraded vehicles are simply parked up because they cannot get fuel.
A very basic expectation would have been dual protocol handling - we know the HW supports ipv4 as all wad fine on ios5.
So its going to be hit and miss with networks - more hit than miss in techy areas like silicon valley, but more miss in places like where I am - a small town in rural Switzerland.
Only apple can fix this with a patch to enable ipv4 protocol handling.
There you go. you just need to buy a new router, I'm sure Apple has one for sale, cause it's not there fault for sure.
Wonder why people start to migrate to other devices ?

Hi, I have iphone 4s and since yesterday my personal hotspot will not work. It's always worked fine in the past and I have a plan with three uk which includes tethering. I've tried everything I can think of including resetting network settings, resetting the phone as a new phone but nothing works. When connected to the pc it shows on the iphone screen '1 connection' but the pc says 'no internet connection' I've spoken to three who say it must be a phone fault. Any help appreciated. :-)

If you have restored as new that pretty well covers software issues
Looks like a trip to an Apple Store and a likely Out of Warranty exchange unit  £159 over the counter
May e consider an upgrade with the money ?

Hello, I just got an iPhone 4S and it seems that the bluetooth function in it doesn't work. I tried few times to pair it to other non Apple phones but it never worked. Does anyone has an idea how to solve the problem? Tks.

This is not a feature of iPhone, iPad or iOS.
Bluetooth is supported for stereo headsets/speakers, handsfree telephone
devices/headsets, some keyboards, some peer-to-peer apps from the
app store and internet tethering where provided by the carrier.
Other than this it will not connect to a phone/computer/device.  (thanks to ckuan for the wording)

  • Hi i'm using iphone 4 and i have problem with viber apps while i'm installing

hi i'm using iphone 4 and i have problem with viber apps while i'm installing & registration process its says error on system mainternance. can you please help me out?
    thank you.

OK, let's try again. Wind is NOT a supported carrier. In order to use tethering, it must be supported and activated by your carrier for the iPhone. This usually involves an additional fee.  You will have to ask your carrier if they can enable it. Odds are, since they are not a supported carrier, they can not. If you want to use tethering, you will most likely have to switch to a supported carrier that offers this feature on the iPhone.
A list of supported carriers can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937

  • Pairing iphone 6 and macbook pro with bluetooth

I have an iPhone 6 and a new MacBook Pro Retina and cannot pair my device with BlueTooth. I do have handoff working so I know they are communicating.
Why can't I use blueTooth to move files from one device to another?

Use airdrop to transfer files. Bluetooth is only for tethering your phone.
    Hope this helps.

I have an iphone 4 and so does my daughter ... in my Settings screen i have a Personal Hotspot but she does not!  How do we get one on her phone and is there a charge!

    from Apple doc:
iOS: System requirements for Personal Hotspot
Learn the system requirements for Personal Hotspot on your iPhone, iPad, and iPad Mini.
To use this feature, your wireless carrier must offer Personal Hotspot and your devices must meet certain system requirements.
    System requirements
The table below lists the iPhone and iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular models) capable of Personal Hotspot and which connections they can use to share cellular data with another device:
    USB
    Bluetooth
    Wi-Fi
    iPhone 4 or later

    iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G*

iPad (3rd generation or later) Wi-Fi + Cellular

    iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular

    * On iPhone 3G, Personal Hotspot is referred to as Internet tethering.
To connect to a Personal Hotspot, your device requires:
    Wi-Fi: Support for 802.11g/n using WPA2 encryption.
USB: Mac or PC with iTunes 9.2 or later installed.
Bluetooth: Mac OS X v10.4.11 or Windows.
    Carrier requirements
Verify that your carrier supports Personal Hotspot for your device and that you have Personal Hotspot enabled on your cellular plan:
iPhone: View a list of carriers that support Personal Hotspot on the iPhone.
iPad and iPad mini: Check with your carrier for availability.

After upgrading to IOS 7 on my iPhone 4 and iTunes 11 on my PC, I plugged my iPhone into my PC and got the error message that I needed to install iTunes 11 on my iPhone. Any suggestions?

You got it downloaded and I assume you mean it is installed as well.  It was buggy for me.
I had to close and restarted iTunes before I could use it properly.
Then, I had to unplug and replug in my phone before it recognises it.
Just had to try everything.  As final choice, update over the air.  I try to avoid it as it tends to have more problems than a tethered update.

I have an iPad 2 without a phone simcard, can I connect my iPhone to the iPad and use this as my cell connection?

Not if it's a first gen iPhone, the personal hotspot/internet tethering is only possible on the iPhone 3G and later (and then oly if your carrier supports it) : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3574

  • IPhone 3GS disconnects tethering when I receive/make a call

I use my iPhone in the bluetooth tethered mode for about 8 hours a day when at work. I have a 10GB plan and tethering is allowed by the carrier (Singtel Singapore).
However, ever since I upgraded to 3.1.3 my iPhone disconnects the tethering whenever I receive or make call. The iPhone reverts to the 2G mode and I can only switch it back after the call.
To restore I do the following steps
    1. Toggle airplane mode to go back to 3G
    2. Go to network mode and enable tethering, it shows tethering as 'OFF'
Its really frustrating, I have to keep interrupting my work on the laptop if I get a call, and more importantly I cannot look up information on the tethered laptop when I am on a call, really defeating the purpose of tethering.
I have done several system restores, reset the network settings, all to no avail.
Any guidance/help on this will vastly improve my workday!!

this means there is something corrupt in your backup file.. unfortunately you keep restoring the same bad data onto the phone your going to have to restore as new and start over. If you replace the phone and restore the backup the same thing will happen over and over again. Your only option is to restore as new and sync your apps and music back on sorry.

  • Have iPhone 4s and iPad 2 both upgraded to ios6used to tether by wifi ok now will not help

Have iphone 4s and iPad 2. Used to be able to tether ipad to iphone as hotspot to backup ipad. Using i0s 6 on both now. Suddenly ipad will not connect to iphone wifi. iPad will connect through public wifi to complete backup. What to do?

From joromifa - the original question was mine.
Found solution to problem - others might want to read it so here goes:
My equipment and previous working setup:
iPhone 4s with IOS6; iPad 2 64 Gb WiFi and Celluar with IOS 6.
Have 6Gb "tablet share plan" which allows me to use the iPad on the iPhone plan.
Always tethered iPad to iPhone on WiFi to backup on iCloud instead of looking for public Hotspot.
    Problem:
Suddenly iPad would not tether to iPhone on WiFi.
Tried repeatedly and would not work.
    My solution:
Switched off Facetime on iPhone and iPad.
Deleted Facedial App on both iPhone and iPad.
    Success!
Now iPad will tether to iPhone on WiFi and backup on iCloud.
Then switched on Facetime on iPhone and WiFi tether to iPhone Hotspot still works.
Have left Facetime off on iPad and have not reloaded Facedial.
Have run this several times and no further problem.
    Conclusions:
    Possible problem/bug with/in IOS 6?
    Or with Facetime?
    Or with Facedial?
Hope this helps others and lessons the frustration the problem can induce.

  • How do I stop my iPhone 3 from tethering?  Everything I read says to go to Settings General Network but the Internet Tethering is always searching.  I've been advised to wait but it's going on 2 hours so I think I've met my "waiting" quota.  HELP!!

Same with Bluetooth, as long as you're looking at the screen, it will be searching. As soon as you exit the screen it stops, so quit looking at that screen. You know your refrigerator light? You open the door and it's on...trust me, close the door & the light goes off .

  • How do i prevent the ipad from dropping wifi and tethering?

I can tether my iphone 5 and ipad but when not in use the connection gets terminated and i have to do the tethering process all over again. The same thing happens with Softbank wifi hotspots, I have to re-enter username and password everytime I open the iPad.
At home the wifi connection remains stable no matter what. Why is it only tethering and wifi hotspots?

YOu could try 'settings, wifi' and turn 'ask to join networks' on and see if that limits it's push to automatically join the other network.

  • Sir I have iPhone 5 and I updated ISo 6 and personal hot spot is missing

Sir I have iPhone 5 and I updated ISo 6 and personal hot spot is missing

When you enable the 'Personal Hotspot' then any device that connects to that device is being tethered to your iPhone 5.
Some carriers see this as a special service that they charge extra money for, so they disable on your phone unless your are paying them extra.
