Tamil fonts on my Mac (Word) get distorted. Need help
Tamil fonts get distorted when I use Murasu Anjal on my Word for Mac. Hence, i have been using Open office. How di I put it right in word for Mac?
First you are posting in the wrong forum, your profile indicates you have a MacBook, this is an iMac forum. Next you should NEVER NEVER NEVER shut down with the power button. If your system freezes attempt to force quit the offending application, you can force quit by using the Apple Menu or pressing Command + Option + Esc. Or you can always leave Activity Monitor running and when it freezes check AM to see if you have anything taking all your CPU, if so quit that action.
I suspect your HD has crashed, you should run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. Make sure you run in Extended Mode! If it reports errors then you need to boot from the OS X disc that came with the computer or the latest retail OS X disc you have and run Disk Utilities - Repair Disk. If it finds errors run it over again until it reports no errors. After 4-5 runs of Repair Disk it still reports errors you need to replace the HD.
If you want to try to Boot to Safe Mode the instructions are in Safe Mode.

Headless Mac Pro getting stuck - need help with Crash Report
I have a headless Mac Pro being used as a server. It has recently begun to have problems such as slowing down for a few minutes with apps being slow or non-reponsive. It may serve pages, but the database or FTP may not respond. When logging with VNC (screen sharing) we may get a blank screeen or a screeen with lots of black squares and artifacts. If often clears up, but if fully black will usually require that I log on via SSH and reboot. It may be fine for a day and other days may slow down a few times.
The only apps are Abyss Web Server, Panorama database, CrushFTP (uses JAVA), and Backuplist+. Temperatures seem to be okay with the highest being the Nortbridge Heat Sink (167 degrees) and a memory module (163 degrees). The primary disks are a few months old and have over 200 GB of free space. I have done maintenance with Applejack, Onyx, and Disk Warrior.
It finally crashed altogether and I am not experienced at interpreting the reports so here is the crash report in the hopes that someone can help determine the problem:

The Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250, works in every model Mac Pro, and drivers are in 10.6.5 and later.
If you decide to do a Conversion of your Server from 10.5 to 10.6, it is not too bad. Just plan on a brief downtime -- I tried to keep it all running 24/7 by creating a new Servername for the new one, and that serious mistake still haunts me.
You should plan on such a conversion to get closer to current security updates -- 10.5 is not getting those updates, and you should really disconnect your 10.5 Server from the Internet. -

I had a similar problem myself. This is what helped me.
I went to the App store app, scrolled to the bottom, logged out of the account, re logged in with my Apple ID. Then went back to app updates. Once I put in my ID password all was fine. -
So im about to buy a mac pro, I just need help cause im not sure if it's worth paying more for instance, a hi-res screen compared to the stock screen, and will i really miss the .2 ghz and the upgraded video card if I get the 2.0 ghz mbp?

It appears the 15" 2.2 ghz isn't worth spending $400 more for, but you get the 1GB Radeon 6750M that has four times the VRAM than the 15" 2.0Ghz model and about 167% more performance. High settings on all current games with over 50 fps.
If your not into 3D gaming or just light weight, then the 2.0 Ghz (last years performance) will suffice on low-medium settings at about 30 fps.
The 13" is rather poor as it has integrated graphics. 30 fps on only some games.
The high res screen is a excellent choice and the anti-glare is great for viewing just about anywhere.
No messy films to replace at $30-$40 a pop.
A lot of people bring the glossy screens back once they hear about the anti-glare.

In my opinion the extra $400 for another 2-3 years of use out of the computer is worth it.
Quad cores are more than enough for most uses for most people for many years, it's just a slow card is going to make the machine feel slow in rendering graphics in the future. -
I have a mac 10.5 and need help figuring out how to change my email settings so it does not automatically delete my inbox every 30 days. How to I adjust the mail settings?
I think it must be an IMAP account then, & in Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Advanced>Keep copies for Offline viewing:>Don't keep copies, then on the Server, or maybe it's just this one itself, but on the Server you have a setting to remove eMails after 30 days.
If it's a POP account we'd have to investigate that... but you didn't say so I'm guessing here. -

I've searched everywhere online- honest! but I can't seem to find any solutions for (simple) font management in the mac ms word app. I've disabled fonts though the Font Book app, specifically in the USER identified collection. This doesn't seem to have any affect on what shows up in mac ms word. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some applications, such as MS Word and some Adobe Creative Suite applications, install their own fonts for use by their own applications. These fonts are sometimes installed somewhere within the application's folder, or perhaps within a folder like Application Support within one of the Library folders on your computer.
If you can't manage the fonts using Font Book or Linotype FontExplorer, you usually need to find and manually move the fonts. Then when the program next starts, it won't be able to locate and load the fonts.
Sorry, I don't recall where Word installs its fonts. (I moved mine long ago and can't remember where they were in the first place.) Try looking in a couple of the places I alluded to, and if that doesn't pan out, try Google.

Hello I wonder if anyone knows how to find, download and install a suitable IPA (phonetics) font for the MacBook Air? I need to be able to use a pop up window of fonts.
Unless you've done anything to change it, Google keeps every email that ever passes through their server in your All Mail folder/mailbox/label. Even if you delete stuff, they hold onto it, there. You have to go out of your way to actually delete anything permanently.

What OS is on your Mini? What year/model is the Mini? The seller should have reinstalled the OS that came with the Mini instead of just selling it to you as is.
Once you determine the OS, you can erase your Mini's Macintosh HD and reinstall the OS which will allow you to setup your own account during the Setup process. -
MAC keeps crashing? NEED HELP!! please
i found a previous forum on here that people were having the same issue, but lets just say i need help for dummies. Here is the error message i get when safari crashes:

There is actually a lot more to it but i was just trying to search based on this criteria above. Anyone help? im not the most computer literate, but i have tried simple things like clearing the cache, emptying old bookmarks etc that take up room. any other suggestions? I have safaro version 4.1.3 if that helpshere is the rest of the crash. i still didnt trash anything bc i wasnt sure how/why that would be able to fix it? is this bad?? it happened when i was just on a regular internet browser (ESPN, MSNBC, etc)

Hi,
I have accidently deleted safari from my iphone and can't find it to put it back. I did it ages ago as I didn't know what it was and I was trying to create extra space! Now when I click on a link say in an email, it doesn't come up with a browser. I have looked at the apple site but can only see a download for mac users. Not sure if this is the case because it is preinstalled on the iphone.
Help needed please!

Font Book: Managing Fonts, Duplicates, Warnings etc... Need Help!
How this all started...
I have a lot of fonts. I use them for design purposes, and recently added a bunch of new ones.
As a result, I had a problem with an Adobe program and the font displayed in the workspace.
I figured out which one caused it and deleted it. (I've never used it before, and it wasn't a common font, so I didn't really care).
Problem with that solved.
So I figured that I ought to go through Font Book and check everything else and started Validation (under User).
I had several Errors, Duplicates and Warnings.
I (maybe naively) allowed Font Book to "Resolve Duplicates".
QUESTION 1 (a) (b): Could letting Font Book resolve duplicates create any problems? and how does it decide what to trash?
I also let Font Book move all the Error fonts to my empty Trash Folder.
- I then moved all those to an empty folder on my desktop.
I then moved all the Warning Fonts to another empty folder on my desktop.
So now, in User fonts, there are currently no problem messages.
This is where it gets a little trickier...
In "All Fonts" or "Computer" there are no caution symbols adjacent to any fonts, but if I run Validation, I get a lot of duplicate fonts.
For example... Arial exists in:
Library/fonts
User/Library/fonts
Library/Fonts/Microsoft
QUESTION 2: Do I need to address these? and if so, will that have an effect on any programs that use those fonts?
* I did some research on this, and found an article at Mac World, discussing this, but I don't feel any better/wiser after reading it or the comments...
"Problem" since resolving duplicates and/or moving warning and error fonts (from User):
Since I resolved duplicates, and moved the error and warning fonts, I've noticed some "minor" changes in appearance with websites.
Such as in Hotmail, and a website that I'm a member; the font displayed is now just slightly different.
Albeit, the difference is very subtle, (but as a designer, I noticed this right away) and my concern is how this may affect any design work I do, if somehow the change I'm seeing is more of an error.
* I have to make an assumption that its a font used in scripts (like Arial, Helvetica, etc, etc) that use my fonts for display.
QUESTION 3: So the big question is, how the heck do I address that now???
About the Warning Fonts:
For the most part, the fonts that came up as "minor warnings", showed the message 'kern' table structure and contents.
- I know that "kern" is suppose to be the spacing between characters.
QUESTION 4: So, why does Font Book care and warn about the "table structure and contents" of font spacing between characters, for any font???
QUESTION 4b: If that's NOT what that means, then I'd appreciate a plain English definition (perferably a source from Apple directly).
Caches:
I'm seeing changes on the fly with fonts (and the display on websites), if I try and move fonts that had warnings like Arial styles or Helvetica styles back to my User Directory, so I'm guessing that Font Caching isn't affected by this.
If anyone is going to suggest that I deal with the font cache (since I've read several questions on this topic already), I'd appreciate some explanation about WHY I would need to address font caches and HOW they might be affected in respect to your suggestion and the problems I'm having.

Having a large number of fonts is something I've always had for design purposes. I never had issues with fonts on a PC, and didn't expect these sorts of problems on a Mac. And how is someone suppose to know NOT to trust a pre-installed program that's suppose to MANAGE your fonts???
I don't touch the system fonts. I am well aware that they can't be deleted, nor do I add any fonts to that directory.
I agree... I need to narrow down the issue. That was the whole point of posting this!
I do keep backups of my system and files. I have considered just replacing the font folders with what I had before, but it just brings me back to where I had all the warnings, errors and duplicates... And I'm not entirely sure if and how that could affect the font caches, and if I would need to then address those. I've been researching this quite a bit, but so far, all I've found is complaints or questions from people with similar problems. For whatever reason, very few people seem to want to offer help with this kind of problem (but I thank you for at least trying)...
With Dreamweaver, its not quite that simple. If it was, then I wouldn't need the help. Even if we disregard the issue I have with Dreamweaver, the problem also exists on some websites, webmail, etc. Websites (and Dreamweaver) use standard font families and display their fonts from YOUR installed fonts. The font problems I'm have online are not missing fonts, they are just not the same font in size or appearance that they were before (and no, my webmail, and these websites didn't change. I had someone give me some screenshots to confirm). But I can't figure out exactly where the problem is, because it appears that I DO have the standard fonts. It could be that FB removed a version that was better than what was left behind, or it could be something else.... I have no idea anymore. I'm just getting more frustrated. -
Can't create Word Document report - need help
Hi,
I have been trying to create a report using a word document. I downloaded an example from ni.com that has Export_Info.vi. When I try to run it I get this error:
Error 1003 occurred at Open VI Reference in New Report.vi->Export_Info.vi
I traced the error back to New Report.vi which is a VI that comes with the LabView package. There is a Open VI reference that when it tries to open Word_Open.vi gives an error. So for some reason I can not open Word_Open.vi without an error, and it comes with the Report generation office library.
Does anyone know what could the problem be?
I tried reinstalling everything and i still keep getting the same error. This makes it impossible to create a report now.
Any help would be VERY appreciated.
Thank youYes I have it installed. When I went to open up Word_Open.vi it opened with an error and it said that the property was not valid.

My Mac crashed and I need help... Seriously!
I have had this problem in the past and I am very lucky that I got it running. My Mac freezes which causes me to hold the power button to shut it down manually. When I go to restart it, it stays on the gray screen with the spinning wheel. I have held the Shift key to make it into safe mode and sometimes it works and I can have partial access to my computer. Other times when I do that it does nothing. As of right now, I managed to get it into some sort of mode and it is showing my background and the rainbow wheel [which is supposed to be my cursor]. I have gone into Single-user mode (Command-S) and Verbose Mode (Command-V). Each time I go into Single-User mode it always stops at ":/ root#" and I have no idea what to type in next. When I go into Verbose mode it says "disk0s2 media is not present." many times.
The first time it happened to me I had no idea what to do and did not think about searching on the Internet for answers. It then led me to drive about 1 and 1/2 hours to the nearest Apple store to get it fixed. Since Apple fixed it, I lost EVERYTHING and it was in the middle of the school year (perfect timing... not). The second time it happened I managed to get it working and I haven't had any problems until now.
I want someone to help me get it into safe mode or normal mode without me losing everything. If/when I get it working, the first thing I would do is back up everything to an external hard drive (I do not have one yet). Any help is highly appreciated!

JnaydichFirst you are posting in the wrong forum, your profile indicates you have a MacBook, this is an iMac forum. Next you should NEVER NEVER NEVER shut down with the power button. If your system freezes attempt to force quit the offending application, you can force quit by using the Apple Menu or pressing Command + Option + Esc. Or you can always leave Activity Monitor running and when it freezes check AM to see if you have anything taking all your CPU, if so quit that action.
I suspect your HD has crashed, you should run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. Make sure you run in Extended Mode! If it reports errors then you need to boot from the OS X disc that came with the computer or the latest retail OS X disc you have and run Disk Utilities - Repair Disk. If it finds errors run it over again until it reports no errors. After 4-5 runs of Repair Disk it still reports errors you need to replace the HD.
If you want to try to Boot to Safe Mode the instructions are in Safe Mode.
