Tape based

This is not necessarily a question but more of a comment. I do use Final Cut Pro 7 but am starting to use Final Cut Pro X and find I really like it. The only thing that is hard is that all my HD and SD cameras are tape based. Importing inFCP7 Is easy but a bit more of a pain in FCP X. I fully understand Apple moving away from tape based systems to file based but there are still a high amour of tape based systems in the field. I just wish they gave us some of the tape based importing like we had with FCP7 - in/out, etc. I do realized I can purchased third party equipment but that does add additional costs which in this market is tough.
Again, I do like the new approach Apple has taken and addressing a larger market of film makers, videographers, etc.

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????

  • HT201180 What type of Fire Wire cable to use to connect MacBook Pro 2009 to tape-based Sony TRV720 camcorder

What type of Fire Wire cable to use to connect MacBook Pro 2009 to tape-based Sony TRV720 camcorder

USB is the slowest. Firewire is faster. eSata is the fastest (and will be superceded by Thunderbolt).  The old Fire was 4 pin (Firewire 400 and is essentially obsolete), new is 9 pin, Firewire 800.  All of the will transmit data, simply a different speeds.
For eSata connectivity, you MBP must have an express card slot (and the appropriate eSata connection card) and you external enclosure must have an eSata input.  eSata cables will only transmit data, therefor it will require power by Firewire or USB cables.
    Ciao.

  • DVCProHD Tape-Based Capture /  Transfer to Avid - Best Practices?

I may seem to be going a little "old-school" with this question, so please bear with me.
I am fairly adept in tape-less acquisition and on-set media management, however this next project has me working with several Panasonic HDX900's (tape-based).
The production has decided to use Premiere for the initial Transfer and Avid for the editing (facilities decision).
We will be shooting in the DVCProHD codec.
    My question is:
When capturing in Premiere 5.5, what is the best quality codec to use which is cross-platform compatible with Avid Media composer.
I was thinking of having the initial tape capture and audio sync in Premiere and exporting an AAF.
Any comments/suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thank you,

The production has decided to use Premiere for the initial Transfer and Avid for the editing (facilities decision).
This seems a needlessly poor decision.
I can't imagine why the facility would make this choice, aside from
possibly avoiding a scheduling conflict by not using the AVID suite for capturing.
When capturing in Premiere 5.5, what is the best quality codec to use which is cross-platform compatible with Avid Media composer.
You have no selectable control over the capture codec in Premiere.
I have not tested it, but AVID will likely have no problem editing media captured in Premiere.
I Would suggest running a test before you commit to that workflow.

  • Tape based camcorder is giving me an error. Import was aborted due to dropped frames

Importing into imovie. Tape based camcorder is giving me an error. "import was aborted due to dropped frames" There are spots on the tape that have no image. the tape must have been fast forwarded so some soptes are blank. I just want to capture the video and burn to a dvd disc. Importing into iMovie.
I just wast to record into imovie and burn the home movie to dvd disc. i have done this with other tapes. What do i do? Please help.

the built-in webcam doesn't deliver standard video with a 'clocked' time-base, such as 25 or 30fps.
I assume, when the frame-rate starts to flow too much, FCPX interprets this as a drop-out.
I would suggest to use the Quicktime Player X app to record first, and use a converter tool such as Mpeg Streamclip to 'convert' it into a regular, with a fix timecode, stream.
    Plan B)
from my box of silly advices:
give this a try: rise the surrounding brightness - lower frame-rates are used by webcams to compensate low-light conditions.
in general: I would never suggest to use FPCX as a 'recording' tool .......

  • How to import Sony Z1 and A1 tape based files to FCP X?

Apple support have today told me (eventually) that footage from the Sony HVR Z1 and A1 and the GoPro Hero 2 cameras are not suppported by FCP X, they suggest using a 3rd party convertor, this will add considerably to the time bringing data into the package.
How do others get over this issue as I am assuming that others are using Sony HVR & GoPro cameras as they are market leaders.

Who exactly at Apple support told you this? Z1 and A1 are HDV cameras and are covered by this note
Final Cut Pro X is compatible with most MiniDV tape-based camcorders using DV and HDV formats, which use a FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.LINK) cable to transfer video.
The GoPro media can be imported an optimized on import. The audio from the cameras is not suitable for FCP, but most people don't use audio from these cameras. If you need audio and video you can batch convert with Compressor or MPEG Streamclip.

  • Cannot get my tape based media to the timeline in Premiere Pro CC

Cannot get my tape based media to the timeline in Premiere Pro CC, I have eqrlier in my edit, but now I get the hand dragging it with the circle and slash on it . THis will not let the media download to the timeline anymore. What happened.... DId I hit a button and/or cause it to be locked out from loading media intot he timeline. My digital basde media loads fine.

Here is more information: I use Premiere PRo CC 7 and the taped based media in the bins are from a Canon HV30 taped based catured to PP directly in a MPEG format. I have already used some edits from this media as well as my captures from digital, which isnt causing any problems. When I mark the taped based media in the source window and attempt to drag it into the timeline the hand gets a circle and slash line on it and will not let me place it into the timeline. Yet I can still load my digital stuff into the timeline and edit normally. I need some footaghe from the tapes but cannot get it into the timeline from the source monitor even after updating, shutting down and reopening. No avail still when trying to drag the hand with the circle slash still exist not allowing it into the timeline. Previous footage on the timeline works no problem. This started yesterday.

  • FCP 10.1 Import Tape based media Issue

When I import tape based media in FCP X 10.1 the 'capture' window weirdly flickers between what appears to be the 1st frame on the tape and the one currently being injested.  The media does seem to import correctly, and I'm able to skim the clip once it's finished with import, but I'm nervous to start editing with it in case there is some issue with the way it's being injested.
    Thanks for any help.
    Steve Pustay

    Hey Steve,
I'm having the exact same problem.  For those who can help but need some additional info: I'm capturing from a Sony HVR -M25U HDV deck via Firewire 800 onto a MAC Pro tower running Mavericks.
    also
from a DSR-40 DVcam deck via Firewire 800 onto an IMac also running Mavericks
I've been doing this seamlessly for a few years till 10.1
Additionally, now my "j" and "l" keys are not communicating with either deck.  Again this is since the upgrade.
Anyone with ideas on how to solve this one?
Sorry I couldn't help you Steve.  Maybe this extra detail will get us some help.
    Good Luck
    Tom

  • HDV Tape Based Camcorders

I'm in the market for a new camcorder and have just purchased a copy of FCE HD3.5, as a first time purchase of any Final Cut product I didn't go for FCE4 first off as I have a miniDV camcorder at present.
In starting to look around the www I was surprised to find that Sony have phased out some (if not all!?) of their tape based HDV cameras; what are people's thoughts on this?
I don't particularly want to go to a memory stick or HDD type camcorder as I don't really think this method of storage has been proved long term (harddrive versus catagorised tape backup) so therefore prefer the idea of tape, but, at the same time this will be a one off purchase for quite some time and I don't want to feel left behind in a few years time.

    Hi
I know we have to have Progress. But for me, if I can lose, every so often the details in my address book. I know that at sometime I will lose an important video file.
I have just done a big Wedding video with two HD DV cameras. Edited over nearly two weeks to the satisfaction of the Bride. Burnt the DVD's and have all the original tapes and the edited back to tape. All stored in a sealed plastic container. From experience with tape over many years. I know this will be able to be viewed for many years,
It may be difficult these days to play a wax cylinder. But vinyl can still be played and very well. Cd's might be more convenient, but there is still a better fuller sound on the vinyl
So to progress to storing on a hard drive, will not be a reliable storage over a long time. Nor is the storing onto normal dvd's the answer as many that I have done over the years, have been reported back to me that they shudder, usually near the end of the video
Still I did not think that it would be possible to make a digital camera. be so reliable and generally do a better job than I used to do with film. So perhaps and I hope I will be proved wrong, but for now I'll stick with tape. Thanks. Dave

  • Can someone pls Recmnd a camera that is tape based and high Def  under $1k

Please give me your recommendations on a minDV camera that is High Def. for under $1,000.
I still am unclear: is there a difference between DV and mini DV ? what ? ss

I don't normally recommend camcorders to anyone, but this particular one was recommended to me by a friend who has one. It's High definition 1080i, uses mini DV tapes and can switch to standard definition and has a good color rendering.
Amazon has just reduced it to $1058, but google it and you will find it cheaper and under 1k.

  • Transfer video from tape based camcorder

I have a sony camcorder dcr vx 2000 ( older camcorder) what version of iMovie will be compatible to transfer video to imac

    Hi
You will not find it - ONLY way to get it is to buy and as Apple do not sell any more e-Bay or Amazon are alternatives stil working.
AND - You need a FireWire-Cable (and eventually a Thunderbolt to FireWire converter - If Your Mac do not have a FW-port - USB WILL NOT WORK for miniDV tape Cameras - this port on Camera is for exporting Photos taken with it - CAN NOT transfer Video !

  • Short term tape based protection

    hi,
I am taking short term protection using tape for file server. and retention period is 2 weeks. so it is weekly full backup (which is defined in short term protection)
i can see that after 7 days it is taking new tape for full backup and for incremental backup.
i want to minimize usage of tapes. how can i do that? since a lots of space is wasted on tape.
    --joseph

    Hi,
This is by design and no way to change it.
    See the following TechNet page:
    How DPM Uses Tape Libraries
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757885.aspx
Short-term tape "full and incremental" option
The full backup will require a free tape for each scheduled job, and the incremental backup for all data sources will be appended to a single separate tape.
As tapes fill up, new free tapes will be allocated.
When the next full backup occurs, it will require another free tape, and subsequent incremental backups will be appended to another free tape.

  • Imovie08 does not recognize panasonic pv-gs36 tape based minicam

My video camera is connected via firewire 400,turned on in vcr or play mode nothing happens.
If I connect via usb iphoto sees the camera but imovie does not.The firewire cable is new but not an apple cable. Please any advice would be great.
    Thanks

I've got a similar problem. I connect my Canon ZR40 (MiniDV) via Firewire. Camera shows up in the "Tree" under "About this MiniMac", but when I open iMovie 08 and want to import from the camera, it says "no camera connected".
    Is my camera to old?

  • Tape-based importing problem has emerged

Managed to import ten taped videos from my Sony DV camera, no problems. But now the screen flashes twice, every two or three seconds, straight after import starts. Each flash is like a flashbulb going off.  This continues for about 10 seconds, i.e., five double flashes, and then FCP X freezes and then closes down, although the camera keeps running. The captured segment which originally was continuous footage has been broken up during capture into separate cuts and the number of cuts corresponds to the number of double flashes seen on screen. I've tried Import from Camera and also Import Files but the result is the same. Purchased FCP X one week ago and running it on a MacBook Pro purchased early this year. Software Updates are all current.
