Tape Co-Location

I'm having a problem getting DPM configured to co-locate tapes the way I want.
I have 6 protection groups, 3 configured for one Co-Located Protection Group Set, and 3 for another.
I have a tape library with 2 drives (Dell TL2000).
The problem I am experiencing is that I wake up in the morning to 4, 5, or even 6 tapes. I'm not sure if possibly the library is using one drive and instead of waiting for that tape to be available, it is grabbing another one in the interest of speed, but
I have all of the protection groups set to never use more than one drive for tape backup.
Any insight would help me keep down the quickly growing number of tapes I'm having to store!
Thanks,
Aaron.

Hi,
Most likely the tape drive is reporting an IO error and DPM is closing out that tape and grabbing another to continue with the backup.

  • Cannot Enable Tape Co-Location

Sorry if this is a double post, I thought I submitted last night but cannot find it today.
I have just stopped all protection on my DPM 2007 Windows 2003 32-bit server, un-installed DPM, renamed the server, moved it into a new domain, re-installed DPM 2007 on same server, set up one protection group.
On the old server I had co-location enabled.
    The documentation says:
Enabling Data Co-Location on DPM 2007
    1.
    Open DPM Management Shell.
    2.
Set -OptimizeTapeUsage to True using the Set-DPMGlobalProperty cmdlet.
    Set-DPMGlobalProperty -DPMServerName <name of DPM server> -OptimizeTapeUsage $True
So I placed the name of my DPM server and ran in DPM Shell several times.  Then I tried the servername with domain.net.  I keep getting this error:

I am a new user of DPM and using DPM 2012, having trouble to co-locate more than one protection group in one tape. I created co-location on tape and include four protection groups in co-location PG set. Although all protection group retention is same but still
I unchecked "Don't allow backup of different retention periods......" but when I go to advance I read some article which say's need to set some value in write protection and expiry tolerance. I am not sure what should I put here but based on some recommendations
from different forums I put 14 / 14 for both fields.
All protection group is running weekly backup, which suppose to be start every Wednesday until all job completed. we take out all tapes from library every Tuesday to send offsite but unfortunately for some reason it seems to be co-location on tape not working
and it is using lot of tapes and every protection group is using separate tapes.
Can any body help me out to resolve this issue.
    Thanks
    Asim J.

-If not through media family, is there any other way to label tapes with customized lablels.
-Is it possible for a backup job to use the tapes from a set of tapes and backup should fail if the tapes are not found from the set. Even if the library has empty tapes.
I have read about Volume set, but I believe its something that is created automatically when the backup spans to the next volume after current volume is full.

  • Backup to tape failed in DPM 2012

    I am new to DPM.
We have configured a protection group for short term goal with 7 days retention range, Synchronization frequency 6 hours. And recovery points are based on synchronization (means 4 Recovery points per day and DPM will have 28 valid restore points after a
week...!!??). In long term goals we have configured 2 recovery goals to tape ...  1 recovery point per week on saturday (retention 4 weeks) and 1 recovery point per month (on day 1 with retention range of 1 month).
Now Im getting PG status "backup to Tape failed" I want to know the process how DPM will check and verify recovery points on disk before writing them to tape.
Based on my protection group settings, there should be 4 recovery points on disk everyday. but there is something different result...see the below in reply.
    My queries are:
    1) On Saturday weekly tape job, does it require DPM to have valid 28 Recovery points?? What happen if any RP missing.
    2) Due to some issues, if weekely tape backup failed on saturday. Can we resume it on monday,tuesday..with corrective actions??
    3) the DPM process of verifying disk based recovery points before writing them to tape.

    Hi,
    <New questions Snip<
Q1) For file/volume protection, synchronization is not RP. We have to configure RP creation time manually.
A1)  Correct, file synchronizations are not recoverable, only "recovery points" are recoverable.
Q2) For application's (SQL,EXCH,SHAREPOINT) recovery points each synchronization job will create a RP as per synchronization frequency.
A2)  Yes, for applications like SQL and Exchange that support incremental backups, then incremental synchronizations are recoverable.
Q3) If a tape backup is getting failed due to invalid RP on disk, I am creating a manual RP with Express full backup(for databases) and a RP with Incremental(for file/volume share), then resuming tape backup. Is it correct way to do this?
A3) Yes, A manual Express full for application data or a manual recover point with synchronization for file / share data and that should allow you to manually create a new tape based backup from the alert.
Q4)How to enable the verify option to check the integrity of the tape backup?
A4) Simply modify the PG that has tape based protection and while on the "Select Library and tape Details" page, select the option "check backup for data integrity (time consuming operation)".
    Q5) And what is Co-Location..!!
A5) Tape co-location allows data from different protection groups to be written to the same tape.  You need to make a tape protection group set using the "Optimize usage" feature under the management - Libraries page of the DPM console.

    Hello,
The above errors  indicate some problems in communicating with the tape drive.
The error is explained in note #540543.
Please test with a different tape cartridge and drive and involve your hardware
vendor to verify that the device and tape is functioning correctly.

  • Help Needed "Camera not asking to use photo location when switched on"

Hey guys, any help would be greatly appreciated.
When I turn on my camera app it used to ask if I wanted to use the location. Now it does not, I am interested in seeing what I can do with the geotagging feature. I checked my settings, and use location is on. I turned it off, backed out, turned it back on again but nothing changed.
When I open up maps and click the little round "find me" button, it works great.
Any ideas on what I can do to get my camera app working again? Thanks in advance.

If Location Services is ON, the geotagging data should be stored with the pics. The iPhone Photos app cannot display that information - you'd need to use a 3rd party app or upload the photo to a photo sharing website that supports geotagging data.
If you want to see that 'use location' request from the Camera app, go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Location Warnings.

  • Has BlackBerry forgot Switzerland in Calendar Events - Location?

    Hi all,
I just recently returned to a BlackBerry Q10 after about 3 years using android devices. I really missed the physical keyboard and the shortcuts that came with it.
After a few days of use I have discovered a problem with Calendar Events. When I enter an address here in Zurich, it should become a link that will launch BB Maps. It does not. I have tried various combinations of street, city, postal code etc. Even when I press the Map icon to search for an address and paste it into the event location, it does not become a link.
I also tried my old address in Paris and that didn't work either. It seems that the OS does not deal with addresses outside North America.
It would be OK if I could change the default map application to BeMaps Pro but I can't figure out how to do that either.
I was wondering if anyone has an idea or has had similar issues.
    Cheers
    Bruce

    Hi,
Yes it works if you put in a North American address.
    Example:
    1. Create a new calendar event.
    2. For "Location", type "2100 Yonge Street Toronto".
    3. Save new event.
    4. Open the event. The location will now be in blue font.
    5. Tap the location text and BB Maps will open and display the location on a map.
It does not seem to work with Swiss or French addresses even if I search using the Map app first and paste the location into the event. I tried a UK address " 58 Baker Street London" and that worked.
Let me know if it works the same for you.
    Cheers
    Bruce

  • How do I change ipad default location??

I've moved (9 months ago) and my iPad doesn't know it. Surely there's a way to update it?  I'm 75 mikes from where I used to be. Not even the same area code.

    Try this:
    Go to Home Screen
    Go to Settings
    Tap on “General”
    Tap on “Restrictions”
    Tap on “Allow Changes”
Tap on “Location” in visible mode
    Select “ON”
You have successfully changed the location

  • Tape and backup managemnet

    Hi,
I have inherited DPM 2012 server which has 2 protection groups which also uses SAN storage for short-term backups and tape for long-term. Also tape co-location is enabled for efficiency.
The problem I have found is that on the weekly tape management reports the tapes that the server requests are not always sufficient to backup all the protection groups so I have started to fill the entire tape library (48 tapes). The other problem is
that sometimes a number of jobs fail and when I check the errors it reads:
Failed to perform the operation since the tape free tape is not available in Tape Library HXX library  (x64 based) (ID 24050)
The job has some data transferred for example 550GB so I instantly assume that the tape got filled and the job needed another tape. Other failed tape backups show 0MB transferred data so I imagine no tape was available. From the errors I am unable to tell
which tape the job wanted as per the long term retention policies. I am after some advise on how best to tackle these problems as I believe the server configuration needs some TLC
Another not is there way or online reference I can use to built my own backup reports via powershell as the builtin ones are pretty poor

    Hi,
Somehow I missed this, sorry for the delay.
During a tape backup if a tape becomes full and there are no other tapes marked free, Free (contains data) or expired in the library, DPM will raise an alert to prompt for another free tape to continue backup.  The same is true during a restore, if
a needed tape is not in the library an alert will be raised.  By Default, DPM It will wait for
1 hour before failing the job.
This prompting timeout can be configured by the registry entry “PromptingTimeOut” under “HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\1.0\Prompting”
    PromptingTimeOut:REG_Dword:43200000  (dec) = 12hrs
    The Formula is   (#hrs * 1000 * 60 * 60)
    1HR =  1*1000*60*60 =  3600000  decimal
So for each hour to wait, multiply by 3600000.
    8hrs = 28800000  decimal
    Restart the DPMRA service.
For the tape reports, you can download the
DPMJobs-V3.0 and create custom filter to gather detailed tape jobs.
FYI - That DPMJobs utility was written before the DPM changed the location of the custom filters, so if you are running DPM 2010 V3.0.8180, later version of DPM you must copy the JobFilters.xml file from the following directory before running the utility:
Copy the JobFilters.xml from %SystemDrive%\Users\User name\appdata\Microsoft\Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager TO DPMInstallLocation\DPM\bin folder.

  • Calendar - Driving Directions to Location?

Ok, so maybe I'm missing this, or maybe it's because I'm using NuevaSync to import gCal into iPhone's Calendar via Exchange, but...
It seems to me that when I tap the location (address) of an event in Calendar, it should look up the address in Maps, and thus give me the opportunity to get driving directions.
At the very least, I should be able to put the URL for the Google Maps driving directions results I pulled up as the Location (or in the Notes) and and tap that link to open Maps (like an email does) but alas, that doesn't work either.
Anyone had success with this issue, or is this destined to be my 348th iPhone Feedback email?

Yes. Addresses cannot be linked out from the Calendar app, nor can phone numbers (the latter was the subject of my '384th iPhone Feedback' submission).
As you know, you can submit feedback to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

when I tap the "locator" icon at the bottom right of Maps, it can't find my location, or gives incorrect results such as San Francisco, or somewhere south of Detroit, MI

This is what I did, and it worked for me. My location was coming up in the correct city, Philadelphia, but at the wrong neighborhood, a couple of miles away. I turned off the wifi, and made the locator find me by Edge only. Then I turned the Wifi back on and had the locator find me again, and it went back to the wrong location, but 2 seconds later found the correct address within a few blocks. I have the Original iPhone BTW.

    Hey AUABB,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you're not able to enable Location Services on your iPhone 4s, first restart the device:
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Next, try resetting the location settings on the device to factory default:
If you would like to reset all of your location settings to the factory default, go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Location & Privacy. When your location and privacy settings are reset, apps will stop using your location until you grant them permission.
