Tape Drive Software

I don't understand this forum at all. If anyone ever sees this, please let me know.
I have 2 x legacy HP tape drives, one is a DAT, the other a DLT. I've got tapes, cleaning tapes, cables, and SCSI adapter cards. The one thing I don't have is any software that can use them. I ran across my original DLT drive software today, and it tried to install Colorado Backup II, but failed because of the OS. (I'm running WinXPProSP3 right now.)
From the disk I found today I ran the diagnostics, and, after 10 years of 'storage' the DAT passes all tests with flying colors. Even the tape s are still good.
One thing to keep in mind is that I would prefer freeware software. Well, actually I can't afford anything else right now.
Does anyone have a 'favorite package' of freeware tape drive software that they recommend? I'm not interested in "Well a friend of mine's friend told me that BLAH is pretty good, but that was 200 years ago." If you don't use it personally, please don't recommend it.
Once again, my computer is a handbuilt with AMD 3+ running Windoze XP Pro with Service Pack 3. The DAT is a Surestore DAT8I. The adapter is an Adaptec 2940CU, and it all works fine. I just need some software to make use of it.

Hi:
This is the consumer support forum.
You probably need the business support forum when dealing with issues such as tape drives and the like.
Here is the link to the general tape forum.  You can decide which of the two categories you want to copy and paste your post to.

  • Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive Software recommendations

    Hi all.
    I have an old Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive that I keep around to access the old tapes. Moving from computer to computer I eventually started using TimeMachine for backup to SATA Externals. I moved important stuff off of the tapes to get faster access to the stuff I backed up.
    I am running out of space again and decided I am going to build or buy some type of NAS box. This will involve buying some more drives ultimately and maybe some new backup software that will run off of a server. I am thinking of just using Time Machine over a network but I haven't decided yet.
    Unfortunately while cleaning some drives and getting rid of old software and documents to make more space for new stuff I wiped a system disk that was on the G4 this was running on. The Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive came with included software when I bought it. I am pretty sure it was some light edition of Retrospect but I can't recall. I have the old G4 (not in service minus drives), a Power Mac G5, an iMac, and Mac Pro Tower.
    Here is my delema. I want to get the VXA working again as I still have some files on there that I never went through. I would also like to use it for as long as it will run as a redundant backup system. I have run out of space on all the drives I currently have and will most likely just buy an external harddrive but until I get the more expensive NAS up and running I would like to avoid spending any unnecessary funds. Since I can't locate the cd with the driver and software I looked on their site. Retrospect has changed hands several times and there is no availble downloads other than the Utility. Oddly enough I found my CD storage box and I have every other OS, Utility, Script, etc that I have ever used so I am thinking it's lost or fell out of the box during a move.
    Can anyone recommend some very inexpensive software that will backup (and control) the tape drive? I am willing to use open source/free alternatives or to buy used software. I thought about an old copy of Retrospect but I can find any. The new stuff looks great but since the minimum will require slapping down about a bill ($100) I figured that I should just use that money to buy an external in the next couple of days while I sort out the bigger more robust NAS plan. I also looked for BRUs lite software but they don't sell it anymore.
    BRU is a good product but it's out of the budget for now at least until I figure out the NAS.
    I just need some creative thinkers to make some suggestions that I might be able to employ so I can start cleaning off some of the other drives because I plan to use the SATA I, II, and III drives I have to put in the NAS. I will probably use PCIe cards or firewire/usb host cards to ulitize all the drives. You might be wondering why I want to save so much data and it's really simple. I have asset libaries and client work product which I often need to go back to either because they want some element re-done in a fresh way or because I can actually re-use some work product on new projects for other clients. I often take mockups and demos and re-cycle them by submitting them on new projects so I can offer more than one choice to clients during demo submissions.
    Anyone got any ideas?

    Hi Ivan,
    Thanks for taking the time to link to this. It will probably help someone else. Yes you are correct. I believe that it is the full installer. I made this post then went and looked at the box I had. It's Retrospect Express. I probably should have been clearer on that. I believe Retrospect Express is a light edition.
    I did try that installer and it doesn't look like the version I was using. For some reason I am thinking it was version 4.x or 5.x Another issue is that the version you linked to required a license. I don't recall if the version I had needed one but if it did I would have kept it with the disk in a disk box I have. It's not in the box.
    I also contacted Retrospect and sent them the license and asked if they could help or make a suggestion. Their reply was "The program is not supported anymore and due to change of hands we no longer have records regarding your registration. Please buy the new product"
    Another issue is that I had someone help me set it up when I first started using it. I needed to get it up and running before I actually had the time to read the documentation. Dantz' first manual was probably the most confusing manual I have ever read. (Or as my daughter would say "ever, ever, ever, ever" kind of like the way Taylor Swift sings it). ;-)
    I suppose I may have to start looking for someone on Craigslist who has an old retired copy they would be willing to sell me. Then maybe I could use the version you linked to. All I need is the ability to control the tape. Read/Write/Erase. I will even forgo the index rebuilding feature for when an index get corrupted until I figure out my NAS box.

  • Tape drive selection for SAP r/3 Landscape

    Dear frinds,
    We are presently in the process of selection of Tape drive for our sap r/3 landscape. I.e, in the process of sap sizing.
    My backup requirements are upto 1 TB. We have development QA and PRD servers in our landscape. We are planning for SAN based storage solution.
    What I would like to know are as follows...
    1. We are planning for SAN Based Tepe library.
    With SAN Based tape library is it manditory to use Backup manager to initiate backup and restore operations.
    My question is b'cos i need to upgrade skillset
    Is it possible to mount the Single SAN Based Tape drive on my Development, QA and PRD as if they appear as local drives (file system )on the servers. If this is not possible i need to know about the tape drive which can be mounted as local tape drive.
    I want only one tape drive in my landscap and I must be able to use sap r/3 tools to backup and restore.
    Keeping presice my expectation what i want to know is : I want to conduct backup and restore operations in my SAP r/3 landscape with single tape drive and using SAP BRtools only( i.e. using DB13/ BRtools from command mode ).
    It would be great suggested and participated in discussion.
    Thanks and Regards,

    Hi Nirav,
    the maintenace cost will be the same as before.
    the maintanance cost include the possibility
    that if you pay the maintenace fee regularly you can always get the
    newest software releadse and the support packages and kernel for it.
    please also look at this link.

  • Anyone aware of a tape drive solution for the iMac?

    I have transitioned to an all digital video workflow and use an Intel based iMac as my editing system.  Since I no longer use the mini-dv tapes, I need to find a reliable storage solution to archive my original footage.  I believe LTO tapes to be my best bet.  I'm having trouble finding an external tape drive to work with my iMac because I don't have a SCSI interface on my iMac or can't locate a tape drive with a Firewire or Thunderbolt interface.  Any suggestions?

    In the past I used Roxio Easy VHS to DVD for Mac - VHS to DVD Conversion Mac Software, but that was back in Leopard/Snow Leopard and I don't see support for Lion.
    Another thing that also worked well for getting those old mini vhs tapes into the iMac. Was to connect either the tape camcorder or the video tape in a mini tape adapter up to a standard DVD recorder and burn a DVD that could be imported into iMovie or your video software.

  • Configure tape drive.

    Hi,
    What are the steps required for the database backups to be taken on tape drives ? Is rman sufficient for that?
    thanks..

    yes,legato is third party software.
    it includes a Media Management Library (MML).
    and to utilize tape storage for your database backups, RMAN requires a media manager. A media manager is a utility that loads, labels, and unloads sequential media such as tape drives for the purpose of backing up and recovering data.

  • Queries on tape drive configuration

    Dear All,
    I have some queries on tape drive configuration We are on windows 2003 , oracle 10g  and ecc6 .
    My requirements is to take backup on tape drive through brtools db13
    Do that what need to be done at hardware and sap level means what tape device are there in market which support sap without buying any sap license
    Please suggest in detail.
    Regards,
    Kumar

    Hi,
    If you are using only Tape device which is directly attached to your server locally, you won't need any license for that..
    But if you are going to use any third party backup solution like "TIVOLI", then you may need purchase software and license if any..
    Its depend on the software and the vendor...
    Next thing, if your Tape device is locally attached to the server, you just need to install and configure device driver, so that your server operating system can recognized that hardware.
    Then, you need to change the below parameters in "initSID.sap" profile which is under $ORACLE_HOME\dbs directory to take backup on tape.
    backup_type = offline/online
    backup_dev_type = tape
    compress = hardware
    archive_function = save_delete
    rewind = "mt -f $ rewind"
    rewind_offline = "mt -f $ offline"
    tape_pos_cmd = "mt -f $ fsf $"
    tape_size = 3600M (as per your tape size)
    tape_address = /dev/nmt0
    tape_address_rew = /dev/mt0
    Leave the rest of the parameters as default.
    You will be able to take backup using DB13 on tape.
    Regards.

  • Tape drive  and pci-x card  with Solaris 10 on  VMWare environment

    I have a Sun X4170 server (x84_64) running VMWare ESXi 4.0. On it I have two VM guests- my production file server running Solaris 10 U7 and a test file server running Solaris 10 U9.
    The X4170 has a PCI-X LSI Logic dual external U320 parallel scsi card. I have a tape drive + auto loader cabled to the X4170. It is a Quantum branded autoloader but I believe the tape drive itself is HP. The autoloader+tape drive share a single SCSI ID (6) but have separate LUNS.
    I have two choices for making this system accessible to the OS:
    -     Virtualize the tape drive and loader individually.
    -     In VMWare, enable the scsi card as a pass through device. The SCSI card is then added as PCI device to the virtual machine (actually two devices since it is a dual scsi card.)
    I had virtualized a single-drive tape drives with Vmware in the past.
    However, when I tried I virtualize tape drive and loader, Solaris complained about the scsi id’s being invalid. I don’t think it likes two devices with a single scsi ID. Also, I think I need the backup software to see the REAL tape drive and autoloader (for inventory, changing tapes etc)

    Thanks

    Actually, updating the kernel patches (and enabling hot plug service) did solve the problem. At some point during between testing the system before and after patching, the tape drive got turned off. Since the system patching was being done remotely it was not immediately obvious that the tape drive was off.

    You need something like StarWind Tape Redirector that "iSCSI-izes" hardware attached to host. So you'll be able to connect with iSCSI initiator from inside a VM running on this host, some other host or even other physical machine (as long as it
    has iSCSI connectivity), see:
    StarWind Tape Redirector
    http://www.starwindsoftware.com/download-starwind-tape-redirector
    So at the end of the day you'll have something like on the picture below:
    Good news: this software offering is 100% free so you don't need to pay anything to anybody :)
    Hope this helped!
    StarWind Virtual SAN clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Tape drive disappears from OS

    We're running SLES 10 SP3/OES2 SP2 on a Dell server with an IBM LTO-4 tape drive and Arkeia Network Backup software. Sometimes our backups fail because the tape drive, /dev/st0, has disappeared from the system. The server may run for weeks or just days before it happens - we can't find any pattern. The only solution we've found is to reboot the server. Then /dev/st0 is visible again, and the tape drive works fine.
    I've called Dell about this multiple times over the last two years. They've replaced the tape drive, and we install the latest firmwares as they become available. Dell doesn't seem to know what to do any more, figuring it's an OS issue.
    Any suggestions on how to (1) troubleshoot the problem, (2) prevent it, or (3) fix the problem when it occurs without needing to reboot?

    Are you sure it is not an issue at the controller level. I would have looked
    there right away. What kind of controller is it using. I went through a
    similar issue and finally popped a different brand controller in the system
    and used it and never saw the issue again. Also cables can go bad as well.
    Believe I have seen that one many times.
    Good Luck

    You have broken hardware.
    Broken hardware doesn't work when you expect it to work.
