If and what driver you need depends entirely on your backup application.
In general, you don't need any.

    bash-3.00#  mt -f /dev/rmt/0 status
/dev/rmt/0: No such file or directorywhen i ran ls -l
    it reveals the following output
    ls -l /dev/rmt/0

  • Error after installing tape drive

    Hi,
I am a newbie to Solaris, I have a SunFire V120 box, i was trying to install a tape drive(HP SureStore DAT24), i did the install in this manner.
    # rm -rf /etc/path_to_inst
    # init 6
later at the "ok" prompt i gave "boot -ar" after doing that it asked me various options i accepted the default values, when it asked for rebuilding the /etc/path_to_inst file i said "y", but later everything went wrong.
    This is the output,

I have exactly the same problem after running an fsck to clear corrupt files.
Is there a problem with mirrored disks and using boot -ar to rebuild path_to_inst?
The basic problem is that the root filesystem is coming up as read only

  • How can I connect a DLT-IV Tape drive with SCSI interface to Quad G5?

I have had no problems with my "Quantum equivalent La Cie DLT-IV Tape drive" on OSX connected to the G4 Quicksilver using an Adaptec 2930CU PCI card - but I can't move that to the G5 as it has to be PCI-Express cards as far as I can tell.
Adaptec pre-sales support inform me that Adaptec have no Mac support in their current product range.
Has anyone found a solution to this connection requirement that will work with Retrospect and DVD StudioPro?
If there is a workable solution which is no longer available to buy - I would still be interested in knowing so I could scour ebay for it.
    TIA,
    Richard

    Hi Richard;
If you go to ATTO, they are offering a ExpressPCI PSC which include a SCSI bus on sale for $24.11.

  • -36 errors, can't copy files in finder or backup to tape drive

Does anyone know what causes -36 errors and how we can eliminate them? We need to backup our files, but have been unable to do so due to -36 I/O errors in Retrospect. Files on which this error is reported by Retrospect will not copy in the finder, either. I think our hard drive may be bad. How can we recover our files if they cannot be backed-up or copied?
We recently purchased a tape drive for backup, an Exabyte VXA-2 FireWire Tape Drive. We are using VXA-2 V23 (230m) 80GB/160/GB Data Cartridges. I have verified that this drive is supported by Retrospect and that we have the correct tape cartridge. We are backing up one partition of a hard drive that is divided into two partitions. One is the start-up partition, the other is a partition on which we store customer files. We are backing up the partition that stores customer files. The tape drive is attached to and backing up a Macintosh G3 that was recently upgraded from system 9 to OS X 10.3.9 (Panther). The hard drive was not re-formatted before OS X was installed. I have downloaded updates and updated our Retrospect to the latest Retrospect version 6.1.126. I keep getting read errors when trying to backup the customer files partition, although I have ran every good repair program I know of to that partition — TechTool, Disk Warrior and Disk Utility. The tests all say the drive is OK. The only test I have not done recently is a surface scan, as this is an over-night procedure, but plan to do it this evening. A surface scan was done at the beginning of January, but we have continued to have problems. Yesterday morning I ran Disk Utility and it verified that the partition was okay.
I am fairly certain the problem is not with the tape drive, as a test backup up of some of the problem customer files to a file backup on the startup drive also produced many -36 errors. Also the tape drive worked on another Mac with no -36 errors.
The following is an excerpt from the log of last night's backup when the program was backing up (this is a very small portion of the whole log, there was a very long list of files it reported read errors on) Following this excerpt is also an excerpt of errors reported while the program was trying to verify the backup:

The only suggestion I have come across is to copy the files to another drive, but this is impossible because the problem files cannot be copied. If anyone has any other suggestion for fixing this, I would appreciate any input. Thanks.
Mac G3 Blue & White 300 mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Original hard drive replaced with a 120 GB Maxtor 6Y120P0

Tech Tool, Disk Warrior, and Disk Utility all work to make sure the directory is Okay. They do not read every block.
I think you should do the surface scan you spoke of. What program do you use for this?
If you cannot copy a file in the Finder without an I/O error, the file is damaged or the drive had bad blocks.
Be sure you also downloaded the drivers module when you updated retrospect.

  • Eliant  820  tape drive

I'm Currently running solaris 9 and trying to hook up a
Eliant 820 tape drive. how do I modify the st.conf. is it
one line at a time ?. also is there a way to upgrade the firmware/ patches from solaris/sun?. all I get is I/O errors
everytime I run sunvts. I ran cleaning tapes/ new tapes
through about 3 times. I read something about
    modyfying the st.conf.
I have no problems with the exabyte 8505 tape drives
    just the eliant 820's.

    Hi Ketan,

Check SCSI id on your tape device. Try to use different SCSI number or try install correct device driver of the tape device.

  • Tape Drives set automatically to 1

    Hi all,
After I set some configuration in the "Backup Settings", I found that "Tape Drives" filed is automatically filled with the value: "1". I tested the issue on may machines and the result was the same.
    Steps to generate the issue:
    1. Login to the Database Control EM as SYS
    2. Follow the following links:
Maintenace Tab -> Backup Settings -> Backup Set
    3. Set "Maximum Backup Piece (File) Size" to 4 GB
    4. Click on "Policy" link
    5. Mark the checkbox "Automatically Backup Controlfile ..."
    6. Set "Retain backups that are necessary for a recovery .." to 2 Days
    7. Click on "OK" button
Now the settings should be saved. Click again on "Backup Settings", you will see that "Tape Drives" field is filled with "1". By the way, NO tape is installed on the machine.
This leads me to many problems. For example, trying to recover a tablespace failed because RMAN is creating channel of Tape type (although I sat Disk as the default channel)
I hope to see any help on this issue here because it caused me many problems.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Tape drive  and pci-x card  with Solaris 10 on  VMWare environment

I have a Sun X4170 server (x84_64) running VMWare ESXi 4.0. On it I have two VM guests- my production file server running Solaris 10 U7 and a test file server running Solaris 10 U9.
The X4170 has a PCI-X LSI Logic dual external U320 parallel scsi card. I have a tape drive + auto loader cabled to the X4170. It is a Quantum branded autoloader but I believe the tape drive itself is HP. The autoloader+tape drive share a single SCSI ID (6) but have separate LUNS.
I have two choices for making this system accessible to the OS:
    -     Virtualize the tape drive and loader individually.
    -     In VMWare, enable the scsi card as a pass through device. The SCSI card is then added as PCI device to the virtual machine (actually two devices since it is a dual scsi card.)
I had virtualized a single-drive tape drives with Vmware in the past.
However, when I tried I virtualize tape drive and loader, Solaris complained about the scsi id’s being invalid. I don’t think it likes two devices with a single scsi ID. Also, I think I need the backup software to see the REAL tape drive and autoloader (for inventory, changing tapes etc)

Any ideas? Maybe a need to update the MPT driver or is that dangerous?
    Thanks

Actually, updating the kernel patches (and enabling hot plug service) did solve the problem. At some point during between testing the system before and after patching, the tape drive got turned off. Since the system patching was being done remotely it was not immediately obvious that the tape drive was off.

  • Can I use tape drive for backup with win 2012 OS & Sybase database?

I have installed enhancement package 6 for SAP ERP 6.0 with OS windows 2012 and database sybase ASE(15.7.050). I am facing problem while taking database backup on tape drive. I want to know how to initialize tape drive in case of sybase DB and is it possible to take back-up on same. I failed to schedule backup from DB13 so now I am doing that activity by command line. So please help me to solve these issues.
Here I am attaching some files related with backup commands that presently I am using. My SAP system ID is DQS.

That output actually looks pretty good, it was dumping to the tape drive, it just ran out of tape because the drive apparently doesn't automatically detect when it is reaching the end.
For the next step, try adding a CAPACITY parameter to your dump command as discussed at these places in the documentation.
Specifying tape capacity for dump commands
Set the Maximum Capacity for a Tape Drive
Your output above shows it was able to dump 87565594 KB before it ran out of tape,
so lets be a little conservative and try
dump database DQS to TAPE1 with   capacity = 87000000, init
    go
When the dump reaches that point, ASE should prompt you to pop in another new tape
and then issue the sp_volchanged procedure from a second session (it will tell you what parameters to use for sp_volchanged).
Note: once we get the dump working successfully, we can then create a logical dump device that would store the capacity value, and create a full dump configuration so you gain all the new functionality like dump history, etc.
    Enhancements to dump and load

    ob> mkdev -t tape -o -a test:/d01/secure/vt3 -v -l vlib -d 3 vt3
    STEP 2)
Then i created backup storage as RMAN default and selected vt1 as tape.
after that with rman i took full database backup.

  • Tape drive disappears from OS

We're running SLES 10 SP3/OES2 SP2 on a Dell server with an IBM LTO-4 tape drive and Arkeia Network Backup software. Sometimes our backups fail because the tape drive, /dev/st0, has disappeared from the system. The server may run for weeks or just days before it happens - we can't find any pattern. The only solution we've found is to reboot the server. Then /dev/st0 is visible again, and the tape drive works fine.
I've called Dell about this multiple times over the last two years. They've replaced the tape drive, and we install the latest firmwares as they become available. Dell doesn't seem to know what to do any more, figuring it's an OS issue.
Any suggestions on how to (1) troubleshoot the problem, (2) prevent it, or (3) fix the problem when it occurs without needing to reboot?

Are you sure it is not an issue at the controller level. I would have looked
there right away. What kind of controller is it using. I went through a
similar issue and finally popped a different brand controller in the system
and used it and never saw the issue again. Also cables can go bad as well.
Believe I have seen that one many times.
    Good Luck

  • Quantum P2000 tape library showing NOBARCODE on tape drive

    Hi all,
We are having a tape library of ATL quantum P2000 which is having 4 tape drives.
In which we used to daily backup.
When ever we are keeping any new cartridges into the library we will run an inventory , During this time if their is any kind of cartridge in the tape drive their wont be any issue with that particular tape drive .
If not it is showing a problem of NO BAR CODE on the operator panel of the library.
and at this time it is not detecting on the legato software also.
Kindly help me in this .....
    Thanks in Advance....
    SWAROOP

I will use new words to repeat my first reply:
    You have broken hardware.
Broken hardware doesn't work when you expect it to work.
    For example:
but why my tape drive is showing no bar code error when no tape is presentHow can a broken barcode reader give you an error when you don't have anything in the library that has a barcode on it?
Go contact whoever you use for repair services and get the library repaired.

  • Tape drive reconfigure

    Hi all,
i am presently running a server that has no video card. No problem to access it because a use rlogin to manage and maintain the server.
Now i need to reconfigure the server to "see" the new tape drive i installed.
One way to reconfigure the server is to use the OK prompt with the STOP-A keys. But that works only locally, not on the remote host.
Is there a way to reconfigure the server by remote access?
    Thank you

Thanks for the info. According to the following manual (caution it's a pdf), on pdf pages 31 & 32 of 149 ( manual pages 1-19 & 1-20) it is not hooked up exactly as specified but this shouldn't be a problem.
They have the terminator on the AutoLoader. You have it on the drive.
    http://sunsolve.Sun.COM/handbook_pub/Systems/L9/documents/L9_svc.pdf
The question I have is where is it connected to the E250? Did you have an HBA (Host Bus Adapter or SCSI controller) installed to support this L9. Depending on the drive installed in the L9, (DLT8000 vs DLT1) You would need the proper controller installed in one of the PCI slots in the E250. See:
    http://sunsolve.Sun.COM/handbook_pub/Systems/L9/components.html
Also, if this is a DLT8000 drive in the L9 then you may want to load the latest st.conf patch to enable DLT8000 support in the /kernel/drv/st.conf file. Just search for st.conf in Free Patch Descriptions in SunSolve. Use the appropriate patch based on the Solaris version you have installed.
