Tape drop outs causing capture problems

I have just discovered my Sony DVCAM tape has major drop outs but I still need to capture the video recorded on it. Is there any way to set the capture tool to ignore the drop outs and capture through them so I can fine tune my interviews in the editing process rather than the capture process?

In User Preferences, General Tab, set to 'Warn after Capture' in the setting for 'On Timecode Break'

  • Final cut stops import on tape drop out

    Hi all,
Did the search thing and couldn't find an answer. Importing mini-dv using FCP log and capture fire wire. Abort capture on drop out is unchecked. The tape was captured on a consumer grade camcorder, and the comment was made that they heard and saw the drop outs on the tapes before they were given to me to import.
Yes I know, wrong way to do it but imovie imported it without stopping, and since audio is not a problem in this instance I exported the video as a QT mov and re-imported it to FCP, this was the only way I could find to capture the whole tape without it stopping. Very long work around.
Am I missing a setting on FCP that will let it bypass, ignore the drop outs so it will continue to import?

Right under, "Abort capture on dropped frames", did you select, "Make New clip"?

  • Display drops out during capture, but capture is ok

While capturing vhs video thru a Canopus ADVC-100 converter into imovie HD, the screen occassionally turns blue (vhs video drops out) with the "camera playing" message on screen. The currently capturing "clip" counter stops momentarily, but resumes normal counter actions when the video reappears on the screen.
I let the capture run uninterupted. When I check the capture, everything is there with no dropouts as I would assume was happening? Any idea?
I'm capturing to an external FW hd (Lacie d2 250) with min 100 gb free space.

It is just that the display software cannot keep up with all the other demands on the processor. Try killing all other applications and emptying caches.
As you observe, it is not really a problem.

  • Verizon DSL drops out intermittently: problems for 10 months

Subject: Verizon DSL drops out intermittently:  problems for 10 months
    Hi all,
Just wondering if any one can help.  We had Verizon DSL on our home phone line for six years in Worcester MA.  The first five years we had little to problems.  The last 10 months we’ve have frequent (nearly every day drop out and period where the DSL line can’t connect for minutes to sometimes hours).
We’ve had seven different technicians visit us for a total of thirteen visits.  They’ve replaced the line coming into our house multiple times and isolated our home phone lines from the DSL feed but this hasn’t helped. Verizon tech support can’t seem to get back to me with a detailed plan of what they are going to do next and few representatives return my phone calls.
We’ve also tried at least five router and modems and it hadn’t helped.  They recently changed the DSL card(?) in the local office (~7000 ft away) and said they switched us to ADS2.
We’re still seeing internet drops and we’re at our wit’s end.
    Any ideas?
Here’s our transceiver stats from our Verzion 7500 DSL modem combo:

    Thanks,

Well, we're getting pretty fed up.  Here's the letter that we are sending out for a Verizon Presidential Appeal...
    To:
     Verizon, St. Petersburg, FL
    Verizon Technical Team, Worcester, MA
The Department of Telecommunications and Cable, Consumer Division, Boston, MA
    Better Business Bureau
    Dear Sirs,
We are writing to lodge a formal complaint about our Verizon DSL service, and the extremely
poor treatment we have received while trying to resolve this (still unresolved) problem. We have had
intermittent internet outages for the last 12 months. This followed five years of normal DSL service at
the same address. Our problems worsened this spring; our internet is out a few minutes to several
hours a day, most days a week. Our next door neighbors have the same problem with their Verizon
DSL service, though they do not use the internet very often so are less affected than we are. We rely
on consistent internet service for our jobs.
We have had 13 technician visits to our home from a total of seven different technicians. On
multiple occasions, we have also been stood up for scheduled technician visits, including days in
which we took off work to be home. Two of these times in which we were stood up were not visits that
Verizon initiated, where we were told we needed to be home. Additionally, we have received
several “auto-calls” informing us that our problem is fixed and our work tickets have been closed. This
is extremely upsetting to us, as our problem has never been fixed as we have explained many times.
Several technicians have spoke confidently (and condescendingly) that their work would fix our
problem; these are generally the technicians we never saw again.
It is clear from our several calls each month to Verizon that persons and departments within
the company do not communicate with one another. Time and time again, we have been shuffled from
person to person, and now believe that no one wants to expend the effort to deal with our problems.
For example, multiple employees have failed to call us back when they said they would. We have
asked several times for a team of creative thinkers (with the authority to act) to brainstorm some sort
of solution and let us know what Verizon was doing to solve our problem. This has not happened. We
have made extensive notes about our service interruptions and our correspondence with Verizon over
the last several months; these are included in this packet. We also have multiple videos across several
months showing that DSL signal is not available.
We believe that a new line needs to be put in from the local hub to our house, a distance of
only a few blocks. (See notes on reverse of page.) At this point, we have no faith that Verizon is
willing to fix this problem and restore service to us. This is truly a shameful way to do business.
If Verizon is unwilling to restore our DSL service to acceptable levels, we would like Verizon to
Notes: This is what Verizon has told us they have done:
    1. Isolated our phone line from DSL.
    2. Replaced the line from our street to our home.
    3. Switched the F2.
    4. Put us on an A-DSL2 card at the local hub.
We have tried seven DSL modems and six routers without success. The problem is not within
our house; that is clear. We believe a new F1 line is needed. We were even told by a company
representative on the phone “well, DSL is on copper wire…” - basically from our view, an admission
that copper wire can go bad, and that this may be the cause of our problems. We have asked for a
new F1 line to be installed several times and been brushed off each time.

  • VHS tapes drop-out while importing

Im importing VHS tapes to iMovie and without fail, every so many minutes they drop-out and the screen goes blue, though the tape hasnt stopped playing. Is there some way to stop this? Do I just need a new box? I have a Pinnacle Movie Box DV from a few years ago, and Id prefer not to spend a fortune!

Sometimes it is just the poor quality of the original VHS tapes, especially if the tape was recorded at extremely long play. I think the code was EP rather than SP or LP.
I have recorded ALL my VHS tapes to miniDV so that I would not cause further degradation as I tried to import VHS footage. Probably around 100 hours of miniDV tapes. Most of the tapes were ok with occasional blips of dropped frames.
However, one of my son's baseball games was recorded by someone who made copies of his original tape and gave all the team members copies. It is about 14 years old, and had become absolutely terrible with multiple video drop-outs. I copied the entire game to minDV, and then imported that into iMovie.
I spent a lot of time editing out the bad video drop-outs. Most of them were ok to lose, but some had important audio in the midst of the blue screen. It was tedious editing, and my iMovie quickly bloated up to 100 GB of space. Yes, that is correct......100 GB. Fortunately, I was making the movie on an external drive and had enough space.
I did the final version by sharing the iMovie as Full-Quality QuickTime movie and making a new iMovie with the quicktime one--which ended up being only 8GB!!!
So, you will have to decide if it is worth it to edit those sections on a nearly frame-by-frame basis. Is it worth the time and effort and large size of the movie, or can creatively put some good video clips over the bad to preserve the good audio segments?

  • Audio Drop Out/Popping sound Problem

    Hi,
For the last few weeks (since i installed snow leopard i think), i have been getting a lot of audio drop outs, where all of a sudden the sound goes dead and i get a popping sound coming from my speakers.
I am using a pre sonus fire studio project audio interface, with its firmware updated to the latest (the latest update was a beta snow leopard update).
I am running logic pro 8 with snow leopard 10.6.2.
I think i have narrowed the problem down to my presonus fire studio because i totally disconnected it and used logics built in audio soundcard and i didn't get any audio drop out at all.
I was just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences or ideas and suggestions on what is best to do?
thanks in advance for any help.
    Tom

It depends, are you running off battery when this happens? If so then morethan likely it is the audio hardware coming back online. In an effort to conserve power, what Mac OS X does is when you are on battery is that it turns off your audio hardware when it has not been used for a certian amount of time. This popping sound is typical of the audio hardware being powered up.

  • Audio drop outs and continuing problems- Apple Support informed again.

    Hi All,
Have had various audio problems with iMovie transfer to iDVD 6. iMovie had the problems initially but a weird trick seems to be helping me.
Copy a random new audio track into my film, paste it, then cut it out then empty trash..... all of a sudden my audio is clean again and perfectly in time with the video. I have informed the iMovies people in Ireland and they are at a loss to explain why this is now ok.
BACK to the plot and iDVD 6.
When I try to export this project from iMovie in iDVD 6 it either becomes an audio garbled nightmare or if I try and import into iDVD 6 I get audio that gradually becomes out of sync with the video visual. I know that this project was recorded in 16 bit audio so no joy there.
I've told Apple in Ireland that there are major audio issues with iDVD 6's audio set up + something they were apparently unaware of. I was assured that the tech dept's would investigate and solve. I am really surprised that they hadn't seen this problem in this forum!!
In the meantime any advice is very gratefully received. I'm on an Intel G5 Imac with 1.83ghz 1Gb sdram and 250 GB HD. So Software is currently limited!! I desperately need to get this project to DVD!!!!
    Many thanks,
    GUY

SAME EXACT THING HERE. This is what I posted in a diff thread:
    2013 iMac 1TB Flash Drive
    OS 10.8.5
Constant audio drop outs using Apogee Duet. I have to unplug and replug several times to get the system to recognize it. Sometimes when it is connected, Audio Prefs doesn't even recognize it and it shows up as "Unknown". When I click Audio Prefs before I get in, I get the spinning beachball and it takes a while for it to open. I have been in touch with Apogee but to no avail. It seems to work on my 2013 Macbook Pro, but I haven't tested extensively. It seems to get tripped up if I'm working in Ableton and get a Facetime call or if I try to use Youtube / Soundcloud. The system gets noticebly slower. When I switch back to Ableton, Duet is recognized (sometimes not recognized at all) but I cannot play anything inside the project window.
Not sure what to do at this point

  • Internet connection dropping out throughout day; problem NOT with provider

My computer's connection to the Airport Express base station has no problems at all. But the internet connection goes out literally dozens of times a day (at no predictable schedule); this has been happening for almost a month. I originally thought the problem was with the internet provider, but I'm now beginning to think that either my settings are wrong, or that I have a corrupt file somewhere. Here are the details:
I connect via a cable modem (Time Warner - Road Runner). I know people have had problems with Time Warner, so I assumed that was the issue; however I've had 3 service calls and they've checked signal strength inside and out, and swapped out the modem and the cables. I don't think it is simply problems in our geographic area (i.e. greater Los Angeles) due to the fact that the Internet fails sometimes 40-50 times daily, and the problem began when I upgraded from an old Airport base station to a brand new Airport Express about a month ago.
The airport/internet connection is shared 3 ways: two MacBook Pro computers and one iPhone. My Airport's internet settings are as follows:
    Configure IPv4 using DHCP.
DNS Servers: 66.75.160.63 and 66.75.160.64 (note I have already tried swapping these for OpenDNS -- this did NOT solve the problem)
    Domain name: socal.rr.com
    DHCP Client ID: [blank]
    Ethernet WAN port: Default-Automatic
Connection Sharing: Share a Public IP address
    DHCP Beginning Address: 10.0.1.2
    Ending Address: 10.0.1.200
    DHCP Lease: 4 hours
    NAT settings are all unchecked
One of the main reasons I believe that the problem is with my computer's settings or a corrupt file is that I can fix the problem whenever the Internet "goes down" almost 100% of the time by doing the following: after loading Airport Utility, I make ANY trivial change (i.e. changing the DHCP lease from 4 hours to 5 hours) and then click UPDATE to refresh the Airport base station. This fixes the problem almost 100% of the time. But then, anywhere from 10 minutes to 3 hours later, the Internet connection goes down again. [Unplugging the power from the modem, waiting 30 seconds, and plugging it back in ALSO fixes the problem almost 100% of the time, until it goes out again a little while later.]
Also, I have tried disconnecting Airport and connecting directly to the cable modem via Ethernet. The problem remains exactly the same -- I can connect, but then the connection fails soon after. Unplugging then replugging the modem fixes the problem temporarily. So I do not think the problem is a defective Airport base station, nor do I think it is the modem (which has been replaced), nor Time Warner.
I can't think of what else to try -- but any advice would be greatly appreciated -- it's impossible for us to work with the Internet constantly going out throughout the day, every day.
    Thank you!

Just in case I'm missing something obvious, I am here pasting all CONSOLE messages that appear when I do a standard RESTART:

  • FCP3 Capture Problem

When I capture a 45 minute long clip to my (250GB Lacie) external HD and I hit escape at the end of the clip, the capture window stays open with the last frame frozen. The entire FCP3 interface freezes and I have to force quit.
My capture length max is at 60. I am hitting "escape" well before the clip ends.
I have saved 5 minute long clips recently on this drive with FCP3 with no problems. There is 240+ GB available.
Any assistance appeciated. I've tried to capture this 45 minute long clip 5 times and, when everything looks / acts normal until the end, it has chewed up LOTS of time!

IMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Two 160GB and One 250GB external Lacie Drives

Patrick (and anyone else who wants to conribute)
I cleaned off the large LaCie drive and started over. I set that drive as the capture scratch drive, and limited the time to 45 minutes. It's hung up again as I type this, last frame frozen like it's still capturing.
Earlier, in testing the large drive, I transferred another 45 minute long segment from the smaller LaCie drive to the larger one and it worked (took about 15 minutes, though).
I can't believe all this is normal. I just bought the large drive and I am considering returning it. One thought was that perhaps when I installed teh LaCi drive I didn't do anything with the program that came on the disk. The drive just immediately popped up on the desktop and started working. As I believe I said earlier, it seemed to work for a shorter clip. As a neophyte to Mac and Final Cut, this has been a real challenge. I am going to wait a bit longer (although anything over a minute or two seems wrong) for this thing to drop out of capture mode (it's been 13 minutes so far for this 45 minute clip) then it's back to the old Force Quit.
It also appears I can set the smaller drive as the capture scratch disk yet save to the larger disk. It does not make sense to me.
    Any assistance appreciated.

  • Drop-outs with Airport streaming iTunes

    hello all and merry Christmas
I am streaming music to two Airport Express from a hard drive mounted to an Airport Extreme base station. I have the latest versions of firmware and iTunes. iTunes will randomly drop-out and it's driving me batty.
I know it's not a network related issue (ie .... interference from other networks or phones) as I can stream the Expresses using Airfoil without drop outs. The problem only occurs with iTunes 8 as it didn't occur in version 7. I've searched for comments and read as many threads on these boards as I could find but haven't found the solution.
I have based my entire music system on the basis of streaming as described above.
    Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts,
    Warren

I have recently installed 2 airport expresses, and use them with a wire router from Thomson (SpeedTouch). I have had a number of these drop-out problems, and discovered that there is a lot that can cause network interference. After checking a number of things these problems have now been significantly reduced:
    1. Make sure that multicasting is on on the wireless router. Since I don't have an Apple Airport base station, I needed to find the setting for this in my SpeedTouch setup, which was off by default.
    2. Set the network to operate on a channel not used by any nearby networks. I live in an apartment building where nearly everyone has a wireless network. Using the iStumbler app I could determine which channels other networks were using, and pick one that wasn't in use.
Of course, interference can also be caused by nearby power transformers, phones, etc. In my case my microwave cuts out my Airport Express, but that I can live with.
To test the reliability of the streaming to Airport Expresses, try the following:
    1. Find the Airport Express IP number in the Airport Utility
    2. Open up Terminal
    3. Type "ping <ip-address>"
    4. Let it run for a nice long time, then type cntl-C
    5. You will now see in the text in the terminal screen the % of data lost. If this is high then you need to continue troubleshooting your network.
Hope this helps somebody .. I have a frustrating time figuring it out for myself.

  • Wi Fi Drop Outs ...

    Hi all,
I've so far had three calls to Apple care on this issue and so far still not resolved. My iMac is intermittently dropping off Wi Fi, seems to be a very common issue with Mountain Lion 10.8.2. Is there any fix for this? So far senior Apple Care reps have reconfigured network prefrences etc etc, but to no avail ... Is there a system software update coming anytime soon to addess this issue? Any help on this will be greatly appreciated ...
    Many thanks in advance,
    Rob

lol, yeah 4g iphone, lol, yeah i mean an Iphone 4 with 3GS
My iphone is only issue i am aware of that getting the  wifi drop out.
The problem is during the time i use my iphone,  the wi-fi connection will suddenly stop working if i try open up apps that require internet, like youtube...etc. One moment using it, the next, it saying you require the internet to play this or use that. Like  i still have that wi-fi signal on my phone during time says i have no internet but if i turn off the wifi, and use the 3G on phone, it goes back normal. The wifi ends up working again after while, but od that it does this.
Also how do i troubleshoot the wifi? Hope that answer was bit more useful for you, i making sound bit confusing
I am using my iphone one moment, every good, then the next, it won't load, and say you require the interent to use this,

  • HELP! Audio Drops Out When Trying to Capture Canon XL2 Footage

Please help me out here. I'm a freelance camera operator w/ a Canon XL2 and several times now I've gotten calls from the editors saying they're having problems logging my footage, mainly the audio drops out quite a bit, and I'm not talking bout one second for every 2 or 3 minutes. No. It's like every 10 seconds the audio drops in and out.
What's the deal? Two times the guy was using a Panasonic DVX-100A to capture, another time it was a SONY DSR mini-DV deck. With each incident I had to go over with my XL2 and use it as the capture device, which is a pain.
The program they're using is FCP HD or 5. But I think even when they just play the tape in their Sony or Pany cameras, the audio may still suck.
Help me out here, I can't be the only one with this problem.
    Thanks.

Well Robert Swanson, I hope my post wasn't taken offensively, it certainly wasn't meant as such. The only Canon camcorder I owned was the GL1. After switching to Sony's I can honestly say it would take something significant to go back. And, I was merely relating my experiences in trying to capture from other Canon camcorders so that I know where you are coming from. However, I am interested in the HVX being the "noisest" camera on the market. I am seriously considering this camera and would be interested in a review that points this out. I would be using the hard drive recorder instead of P2 cards.

  • Problems with my new phone (wi-fi, all cell reception keep dropping out)

I recently brought my apple iPhone 3GS (last 2 weeks) and pretty much since day 1 I've the same problem. The phone network I have keeps dropping out for no reason at all, wi-fi connection too (I maintain little or no coverage, but as I've taken the sim card back to the company for inspection, they've said the sim is fine and I shouldnt be having this problem) any ideas on how to resolve this issue???

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
I'm afraid i'm not familiar with mHotspot but it sounds like it's not providing correct DNS settings over DHCP and that you need to enter them manually in the phone. You can do this under Settings -> WiFi -> [tap and hold the network] -> Modify network -> Show advanced options -> IP settings -> Static. But for information on what settings you should use you need to check with the support for mHotspot. I suspect you should either use the DNS from your ISP or enter the IP of the virtual interface created my mHotspot.

  • Can't figure out why I'm dropping frames during capture

I'm dropping frames when capturing 1-hour Mini DV tapes and I can't figure out why.
I'm capturing on a Mac Pro (Early '08) with 8 GB of memory running FCP 7.0.3 and OS X 10.6.6. I'm capturing to a 4 TB G-Speed eS (eSATA) formatted as RAID 5 (Non-Journaled Extended) with about 750 GB of remaining space. I'm capturing via FireWire with a Canon GL-2. This should be a breeze for this system.
I've run Apple Disk Utility, Disc Warrior 4 and Techtool Pro 5 on the drives and they seem to be fine. I've unplugged all USB and FireWire devices besides the keyboard and mouse. No virus protection or background utilities are running. I've trashed preferences. AJA System Test shows a 286 MB/s write speed and 254 MB/s read speed. Blackmagic Disk Speed Test shows a 312 MB/s write speed and a 379 MB/s read speed. No other applications besides FCP are running. I edit 1080p HD footage on this system all day long with no issues but when I try to capture DV SD footage, I run into issues.
The dropped frames error does not ever occur in the same place on the tapes. The tapes are brand new and don't seem to have any time code issues. The only thing I haven't done is to defragment the hard drives. I wouldn't think that capturing simple DV video would be that demanding; the defragment for a 4 TB RAID would likely take 2 or 3 days.
Any other ideas on what's going on and how to try to fix it? Thanks!

Thanks for the prompt reply, Studio X. Yes, I'm using FireWire Basic and no other FireWire devices. I've switched FireWire cables, although I doubt that's the issue as the cable I was using was brand new and fit snuggly. Unfortunately, I don't have an alternate playback device right now. Would switching to Non-controllable device capture settings be worth a try?

  • Is anyone got problems with iPad 2 and iOS 8 ? My service provider keeps dropping out. I have to restart it everytime any way I can fix this

Has anyone upgraded to iOS 8 and have found that the service provider keeps dropping out? I have to restart my iPad to get my service back. Only happened after upgrading! Would love A fix for this.

I'm not going to say that you won't find an easier solution than the one below, but I would recommend it as the "ultimate" solution.

Re: IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgradein response to pacoKAS
SOLVED:  IOS 8 Issues on iPad 2:
I just returned home from a visit to the Genius Bar. Like you and many others, when I upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8, it became practically unusable. It was VERY slow, lagged whenever trying to to do anything. Lots of screen freezes and apps spontaneously crashing. I was convinced that the processor on the iPad 2 just couldn't handle the new IOS and I went in to see about restoring to IOS 7.
Thankfully, I was hooked up with a very sharp guy at the bar. The problem is not with the OS, it is with it being an *upgraded* OS. He used the analogy of when you had an older Windows computer and how over time (and over upgrades), they just tended to get slower and slower because of all of the garbage that was carried forward in the upgrades. At those times (and if you've ever had a Windows computer, you get this), the only thing that would speed it up would be to wipe the machine and do a fresh install of the current OS and then reload your apps, and the viola, everything would be fast again. Well, it turns out that IOS can suffer the same problems.
THE FIX:  FIRST, be sure you have a current iCloud backup of your device.  Connect your iPad to a computer that has a clean fresh copy of IOS 8 on iTunes (this is best done with a computer other than the one that you sync your device to because you DO NOT want to restore it from a back up just yet). Ideally, if you do this at an Apple store you'll be assured of the right version there and someone to answer any questions you might have along the way. You then hold the power and home button down to hard-reset the device and continue to hold them down until it reboots into recovery mode. You then follow the instructions on the computer to reinstall the OS on the device (which wipes everything from it and then reinstalls a clean copy of it). Once this is done (which only takes about 15 minutes), your device will reboot and ask you to set it up. Answer the questions about language, location, etc. and continue until it asks you to log into your iTunes account. Once you do that, it will ask if you want to either 1) Set it up as a new device, 2) Restore from iCloud, or 3) Restore from iTunes. Choose (2), restore from iCloud. This will ensure that it brings down "clean" copies of all of your apps and preferences rather than the potentially corrupted ones that might reside in your iTunes backup. That's it! It will take a few hours depending on how much data and apps you have, but I am happy to report that my iPad 2 is now running IOS 8 and it's running as fast as it ever did when it was brand new!
To sum it up, this process 1) Wipes your device and the garbage causing your problems, 2) Loads a clean and bug-free version of IOS 8 to your device, and 3) restores your apps and data so that it looks just like it did before the wipe, with the exception that it works now!  :-)
Note also that by following this process you don't have to go through the painful and laborious process of reloading all of your apps, data and/or settings. iCloud takes care of all of that for you.
