Tape Initialization

Hi All,
Can you please tell me what is the use of tape intialization option? is it advisable to initialize the tape every time before we take a backup. Please explain in detail. Advance thanks
regards,
Bala

Hi,
It's not advisable to initiaize tape every time before backup.
Use Brtools to initialize the TAPE.Login as <sid>adm
give command
Brtools
choose option
Backup & database copy
than
choose option
Additional Function
than choose option
Initialization of BRBACKUP tape volumes
than you get the following screen
Options for initialization of BRBACKUP tape volumes
1 - BRBACKUP profile (profile) ....... [initDEV.sap]
2 - Initialization type (initialize) . [rename]
3 ~ Number of volumes (number) ....... []
4 - Confirmation mode (confirm) ...... [yes]
5 - Message language (language) ...... [E]
6 ~ Tape volume names (volume) ....... [DEVB01]
7 - BRBACKUP command line (command) .. [-p initDEV.sap -i -l E -v DEVB01]
choose option 2 & give name force & enter
choose option 6 & give the TAPE(EX:-DEVB01) name.
(Check tape name in your init<sid>.SAP file )
& than press c & c & c........

I faced the same error once earlier this week. Also i doubt that there is any issue with the tape initialization. Please help ASAP and any help would be greatly appreciated.
    --Siddharth Sharma

    Siddharth,
The error seems that it requires tape initialization to be forced.
After choosing Option 6 - Initialization of brbackup tape volumes
you will get a list of options. In that choose option 2
    2 - Initialization type (initialize) . [rename]
where you will get option to enter force as below
BR0681I Enter string value for "initialize" (rename|force|show) [rename]:
Just type force and then try.
    Thanks

I assume all devices are on the same network (check that the first 3 sets of numbers in the IP addresses are all the same)
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

    Regards,

    Hi Swathi
This is clearly a space problem. There is not enough free space left to perform the backup..
So you need to make sure that there is enough space available for backup...
    This part of error:
R252E Function fflush() failed for '/oracle/CRD/sapbackup/bdvozytd.tib' at location main-9
<b>R253E errno 28: No space left on device</b>
R121E Processing log file /oracle/CRD/sapbackup/bdvozytd.tib failed
clearly states that the issue is related to space on the device..
So clean up the space and try taking the backup again and it will be surely a success!
    No need for media recovery.

  • Tape management & initialization

    Hi,
We have ECC 6.0 with Oracle on AIX 5.3.
I am taking backups onto tape using BRTools. The device file BRBackup recognizing is /dev/rmt0.1
First, I initialize the tape with the command:
    brbackup -i force -v <tape volume name>
Then I will use BRTools to trigger backup.
    My query is :
I have a set of 20 tapes loaded on to the cartridge. When all the 20 tapes are finished, I will have to take backup on to the 1st tape again. However, there will be a backup taken earlier on this tape.
How do I handle the tape that is already written once?
Do I need to initialize it again with a new volume name?
Is the new backup appended to the already taken backup or is it written from the beginning of the tape?
How do I restore the the current backup in case of a necessity?
    Thanks for your help,

    Hi
tape_address=/dev/rmt0.1 and tape_address=/dev/rmt0 are pointing to the Tape Device Drivers to achieve two different functionalities/characteristics of that connected Tape Device/Drive in AIX system. Both are Operating System specifics.
Both are used for positioning and rewind operations while performing backup/restore operations using BR Programs.
Please refer [this useful link|http://blog.worldiswelcome.com/science-and-technology/aix/backups/2009/03/all-you-wanted-to-know-about-aix-tape-device-backups-ii/] to get more information.
    with /dev/rmt0 (rewind driver)
The backup/restore operation will start at the point where the device pointer is at present. But, the tape is rewinded to Zero position once the backup/restore operation is finished.
    with /dev/rmt0.1 (no-rewind driver)
The backup/restore operation will start from the previous point where the pointer was, at the end of previous backup/restore operation. Similarly, the tape is not rewinded to start after the backup/restore operation is finished. This is the most common option used in tape backups.
As per this [SAP Note 4160 - Tape management for recovery|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/4160],
When using the "rewind driver" , the tape is automatically rewound to the beginning after completion of the command.
    Positioning (e.g. mt -f/dev/rmt/0mnfsf <#>) sets the tape to the<#+1> file. E.g.:
    mt-f /dev/rmt/0mnfsf 4 positions to the 5th file.
The "rewind driver" must used for rewind, the "norewind driver" for positioning.
Use the"norewind driver" for restore and file displaying, so that the tape head is then always automatically set to the next cpio block.
The value of expire_period is the retention period for the Tapes writen by BRBACKUP/BRARCHIVE. If you have set expire_period=5 then, on 6th day the Tape will be overwritten. It means that writing to a volume is possible 5 days after the volume was mounted and used.
Please do not change the existing settings of tape_address and tape_Address_rew parameters.
By keeping in mind the following factors,You can design your Backup Cycle Strategy.
The Role of System in Business, the Size of Database, The size of Tape, Growth Rate of Database, Number of Backups per Backup Cycle, Frequency of Backup operations, The data protection period, etc.
    Regards,
    Bhavik G. Shroff

    Hello,
this is the SQL Server forum. We can't use BRBACKUP. If you have a Oracle database you might get better answers in the Oracle forum. If you have a SQL Server database use DB13 or the SQL Server Development Stuido for scheduling a database backup.

  • Initialize Tape error using DB13

    Hello everyone,
I'm just a beginner in SAP as Basis Administrator. I'm trying to simulate the Online Backup using the BRTOOLS, wherein you manually set the volume_group for tape, the initialize tape and backup is successful. When i used db13 doing the initialize tape, it was tagged as SCRATCH that makes my backup failed.
I want to know, why and how will the initialization of tape using DB13 be a success? Why it was tagged as SCRATCH? I want to make this work so i can schedule online backup to our PROD server.
    Thanks and regards,
    Gelyne

    Hi,
go to init<SID>.sap and check this parameter are set or not
    volume_backup = (SIDB01, SIDB02, SIDB03, SIDB04, SIDB05.........)
    volume_archive = (SIDA01, SIDA02, SIDA03, SIDA04, SIDA05..........)
if not check with you hardware vendor and ask for tape lebel name
because system is not get tape lebel in init<SID>.sap file that why it is searching
for SCRACH tape label and failing with error

  • Failure to Import DV tapes on HDV camera

I went to Log and Capture after connecting the camera to the iMac and this came up:
    "Unable to Initialize Capture Device
Device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup correctly. You may still log offline clips.
This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device."
I have a bad feeling that the last sentence happens to be the case and I honestly don't know what to do. Yes I am using a Sony HDV camcorder and I taped on DV tapes, but that shouldn't be this big of an issue right?
Any suggestions as to what I should do?
    Thanks
P.S. - I have the new iMac 20-inch and am using the latest FCP that just came out.

Hi Sean, since this is your first post and you have the latest version of FCP plus a new Mac, I'm guessing this is your first experience with FCP. So, welcome to the forum.
A few thoughts come to mind:
◊ FCP prefers to communicate with camcorders via Firewire, not USB
◊ The camcorder needs to be in the Play mode, not Record
◊ The camcorder needs to be in the "DV out" mode (select that in the camcorder's menu)
◊ In FCP, go to Easy Setup and select "NTSC" and "DV-NTSC" (the USA standard as opposed to PAL)
◊ When you go to the Log and Capture window, click on the Capture Settings tab and by Device Control select either Firewire-NTSC or Firewire Basic (if one doesn't work, try the other). If still no luck, try Uncontrollable Device then do a Capture Now
◊ Sometimes FCP prefers the camcorder be connected and turned on before opening the FCP application
If you have iMovie, try that just to see if it gets your Mac to recognize your camcorder. iMovie is a consumer program with wide tolerances and is designed for plug & play. FCP is a program for professionals who need to create a product that meets exact specifications, and, as you're finding out, provides the user with a lot of options. Pick the wrong one or ones, and things might not go the way you planned, or, might not go at all.
The manuals are actually well written and contain the answer to just about any question you might have about FCP, if you know where to look.

  • Unable to initialize hdv deck problem

    Hi all,
I'm having the 'unable to initialize hdv deck' problem. I am trying to capture HD footage from a Sony HVR-A1E camera. iLink and down conversion are off (like they should be) and I have just captured a HD tape before the problem started.
I don't understand how I could capture HD footage just fine and then without touching any settings (just trying to start capture again) I suddenly get the error message, "Unable to initialize HDV deck. Please make sure a deck is connected and try again."
    Any ideas?

Definitely. Shot on HDV, definite difference between the clips I've captured so far (HD capture that worked fine before this is high quality sharp image, where as when capturing in SD, image quality is poor and smaller).
Everything has been filmed on the same camera with no setting changes between shots. Like I said before, I have already been able to capture today in HD just fine, but for some unknown reason (which I don't think is the prefs.) capture will not work. I can 'trick' FCE into HD capture but it gets stuck on cueing tape (even though video is playing fine on camera).

  • Unable to Initialize Capture Device

    Hi,
I am having a problem importing/capturing HDV video from my JVC HD GR 1 getting "Unable to Initialize Capture Device".
I have been able to capture fine up to this point, finicky some times to be sure, but workable, then in the last few weeks it began getting more and more finicky (wouldn't connect to camera, restart and it works fine), until just the other day it wont connect no matter what I do!
    Help?
Ask questions if you need clarification.
    Camera: JVC HD GR 1
    Tape: Mini DV
    Format: HDV
    Software: FCP 5.1.4

Unfortunately when both "Capture" and "Device Control" presets are not set to HDV it wont even try to connect and gives me this warning:
"To capture HDV source material, both the Capture and Device Control presets must be configured for HDV; otherwise, to capture in another format, both must not be configured for HDV."
As a side note when my camera was connecting to FCP. FCP would only give me on screen controls half the time.

  • Unable to initialize capture device and device control in HDV

I shot with a Sony HVR-Z1U/Z1N and am using a Sony HDV 1080i tape deck to digitize.
I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and installed FCP Pro 5 on it. After getting over some time code issues we were chugging along, when on the 4th tape the image on the log and capture screen suddenly dissapeared (I could get audio and could see the image on the tape deck). Well after taking the tape out, checking and rechecking it I popped it back in and ever since then, I have been getting this error mssg "Unable to initialize capture device and device control."
I have tried deleting the preferences and starting from scratch. If I do that, and choose the easy setup with HDV- 1080i60, it gives me this error "Unable to locate the following external devices- HDV (1440 X 1080) 30fps.
I upgraded to FCP 5.1.2 this morning and upgraded the OS to 10.4.7 and QT to 7.1.3 and still no change.
Im at my wits end, Ive been working on this for a whole week now.
    Thank you,

It has been reported to take more than one attempt to correct the installation but, if properly executed on a machine without other system problems, the QT reinstall process does work. The key element here is you must reinstall QT after you trash the receipts. The process is listed below.

To do a full quicktime reinstall.
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
If this doesn't work, then the problem lies elsewhere:
    1. your system - user preferences, firewire ports or other system elements.
    2. your equipment - camera/deck/firewire cables.
    3. your process - not setting up the software properly or using the software erroneously.
Listed below is a troubleshooting process. Not all steps are appropriate but the general process of isolating the problem is useful.
