Tape management & initialization

Hi,
We have ECC 6.0 with Oracle on AIX 5.3.
I am taking backups onto tape using BRTools. The device file BRBackup recognizing is /dev/rmt0.1
First, I initialize the tape with the command:
brbackup -i force -v <tape volume name>
Then I will use BRTools to trigger backup.
My query is :
I have a set of 20 tapes loaded on to the cartridge. When all the 20 tapes are finished, I will have to take backup on to the 1st tape again. However, there will be a backup taken earlier on this tape.
How do I handle the tape that is already written once?
Do I need to initialize it again with a new volume name?
Is the new backup appended to the already taken backup or is it written from the beginning of the tape?
How do I restore the the current backup in case of a necessity?
Thanks for your help,
Abdul

    Hi
    tape_address=/dev/rmt0.1 and tape_address=/dev/rmt0 are pointing to the Tape Device Drivers to achieve two different functionalities/characteristics of that connected Tape Device/Drive in AIX system. Both are Operating System specifics.
    Both are used for positioning and rewind operations while performing backup/restore operations using BR Programs.
    Please refer [this useful link|http://blog.worldiswelcome.com/science-and-technology/aix/backups/2009/03/all-you-wanted-to-know-about-aix-tape-device-backups-ii/] to get more information.
    with /dev/rmt0 (rewind driver)
    The backup/restore operation will start at the point where the device pointer is at present.But, the tape is rewinded to Zero position once the backup/restore operation is finished.
    with /dev/rmt0.1 (no-rewind driver)
    The backup/restore operation will start from the previous point where the pointer was, at the end of previous backup/restore operation. Similarly, the tape is not rewinded to start after the backup/restore operation is finished.This is the most common option used in tape backups.
    As per this [SAP Note 4160 - Tape management for recovery|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/4160],
    When using the "rewind driver" , the tape is automatically rewound to the beginning after completion of the command.
    Positioning (e.g. mt -f/dev/rmt/0mnfsf <#>) sets the tape to the<#+1> file. E.g.:
    mt-f /dev/rmt/0mnfsf 4 positions to the 5th file.
    The "rewind driver" must used for rewind, the "norewind driver" for positioning.
    Use the"norewind driver" for restore and file displaying, so that the tape head is then always automatically set to the next cpio block.
    The value of expire_period is the retention period for the Tapes writen by BRBACKUP/BRARCHIVE. If you have set expire_period=5 then, on 6th day the Tape will be overwritten. It means that writing to a volume is possible 5 days after the volume was mounted and used.
    Please do not change the existing settings of tape_address and tape_Address_rew parameters.
    By keeping in mind the following factors,You can design your Backup Cycle Strategy.
    The Role of System in Business, the Size of Database, The size of Tape, Growth Rate of Database, Number of Backups per Backup Cycle, Frequency of Backup operations, The data protection period, etc.

  • "Soundfont Manager initialization failed"

    Hey there, folks. S.O.S! Please help me, someone.
    Please keep any negative comments regarding the equipment / software I am using, to yourselves. Helpful comments ONLY, please. I saw similar forum threads regarding my problem, but either they were not completely answered or it didn't relate to my specific computer / OS / programs.
    I am running Cakewalk Pro Audio 9, on Windows XP. Also, I am using a TASCAM Midi Interface (US144 MK II).
    My soundcard is the Soundblaster Live! Though I realize some of these software programs are no longer supported, I have been running them before my recent unrelated computer crash, and they still work when configured correctly.
    When I click on the "Soundfont Bank Manager" (SFCM MFC Application for WinXP), the error message reads: "SoundFont Manager initialization failed."
    I have been told that this is because I need to download SOMETHING like (drivers/registration files), or something to that effect. HELP! HELP!!!

    Anyone? Please? Bueller????

  • Soundfont Manager initialization fai

    My problem is fully described in the title to this thread, but a little backstory might be helpful:
    I used to do a lot of musical composition and work with MIDI on a computer with an Audigy soundcard. This computer had the Creative Software Suite installed, and I found the Soundfont Bank Manager an indispensable resource. But in the fullness of time, the computer gave up the ghost, and died. :-)
    So now I have to do all my MIDI stuff on another computer, that I bought on eBay. This computer has a SB Li've! 24-bit card, but did not come with any CDs for the soundcard. I searched around on the web to find a place where I could get the Bank Manager, and found out, from this forum, that one could download ISOs of the Creative soundcard driver and software suite CDs. So I got the one for the Li've! 24-bit, and installed the Creative Software Suite on my computer. The Bank Manager was not installed automatically with the other programs, but again I found out from reading this forum where on the CD the installer for it could be found, and so I installed it.
    And now we come to my problem: Whenever I run the Soundfont Bank Manager, a popup window appears, saying "". However, all the other programs work fine. Does anyone know what is causing the error, and how to fix it's
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Initialize Tape error using DB13

    Hello everyone,
    I'm just a beginner in SAP as Basis Administrator. I'm trying to simulate the Online Backup using the BRTOOLS, wherein you manually set the volume_group for tape, the initialize tape and backup is successful. When i used db13 doing the initialize tape, it was tagged as SCRATCH that makes my backup failed.
    I want to know, why and how will the initialization of tape using DB13 be a success? Why it was tagged as SCRATCH? I want to make this work so i can schedule online backup to our PROD server.
    Thanks and regards,
    Gelyne

    volume_archive = (SIDA01, SIDA02, SIDA03, SIDA04, SIDA05..........)
    if not check with you hardware vendor and ask for tape lebel name

  • I bought aIphone 6 last week.A update has shown up for iOS 8.1.3. I tap install now a window camw up saying verifing update then after verification ran a window coame up and said error occoured unable to install. How do I install or should I not?

    I bought a iPhone 6 16 GB i OS 8.1.2 last week. A software upgrade to i OS 8.1.3 was downloaded to my phone automatically. I taped install now and the phone went to a window verifying update. Then after the verifying window another window came up and said a error has occurred and can not install. Has anyone else had this happen? If so how do I install upgrade? Or should I not install?

    Also check to see that the auto-pushed update has been deleted from the device after this botched update. If the iOS update hasn't been installed due to an error, the update file could be sitting on the device using up storage space and possibly causing other issues.
    Check if it's on the device under: Settings/Usage. then under STORAGE, tap Manage Storage. A list will populate with your installed apps. The iOS update will be in this list if it's still on the device but hasn't completed installing. If you find the iOS update app in this list, tap on it, then tap on the Delete App button.
    Afterwards, try the iTunes update method which is easier to install since it does not require any free device space to complete.

  • Icloud manage storage link not working on my iphone 4s

    I need to manage my icloud storage, but the manage storage link on my iphone is not working. When I click on it, nothing happens. Can anyone help with this problem? I don't want to buy more storage if I can turn off some of my apps in icloud. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks!

    Had the same problem recently (on an iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1). The phone couldn't back up to iCloud as the storage limit had been exceeded, and tapping "Manage Storage" in the iCloud settings didn't work: it just briefly showed a spinning wheel but I couldn't enter the Manage Storage screen. Looks like a bug.
    In the end I was able to solve it  via the iCloud settings on a laptop. Using this route, I removed the backup that was clogging the available 5GB free storage and was able to access Manage Storage again to tweak the settings. In my case this meant disabling iCloud backups of photos in the camera roll, which was the reason for the large size of the backup file in the first place.
    Here's what I did:
    1. Important step: first of all, make a backup of your phone in iTunes by connecting it to the computer and chosing the backup option in iTunes. You will delete the iCloud backup in step 3, so it's best to have another backup handy. It's not very likely your phone will crash in the short time it takes to complete these steps, but better safe than sorry.
    2. After making the full phone backup, I downloaded all the photos from the camera roll onto my computer and deleted them from the phone. There are different ways of doing this, on a Mac you can for instance use Image Capture. This step is not really necessary to get the backups working again as you will probably disable camera roll backups in step 3 anyway, but it's good to get into the habit of backing up photos on the computer regularly, rather than in iCloud. If you want to keep some photos on the phone as well, you can always copy them back from the computer onto the phone.
    3. Access iCloud storage management via the computer rather than the iPhone. Instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4847 > Backup > Deleting backups and turning off Backup for your device > Mac OS X (or Windows 8, Windows 7 and Vista). If you use a Windows computer and the iCloud control panel hasn't been installed yet, you can find it here http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/pc.html.
    I don't think you can delete specific elements like the camera roll from the backup this way, you have to delete the whole thing. But you made another backup in step 1 so this isn't really a problem.
    4. On the iPhone, try to access Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage again - it should work now. In the next screen, choose your iPhone and you will get the Backup Options where you can switch backups on and off for different apps. It shows you how much storage each app takes, you will probably see that the Camera Roll is the largest so you may want to switch that off. Once you're happy with the settings, go back two screens to Storage & Backup and switch Icloud Backup back on (it was automatically switched off in step 3), and if you are on Wi-Fi, tap Back Up Now so it makes a new iCloud backup right away.
    That's all, hope it solves your problem.

  • HT204074 Can't find "manage devices" in itunes...

    I want to remove a device from itunes. Apple says:
    Removing an associated device or computer from an Apple ID
    To remove a device or computer from your Apple ID:
    Open iTunes.
    Sign in to your Apple ID by choosing Store > Sign In from the iTunes menu.
    Choose Store > View My Account from the iTunes menu.
    From the Account Information screen, click Manage Devices.
    Click the Remove button next to the device name you would like to unassociate.
    However, I am just not able to find "Manage Devices" on the account info screen - what am I missing?

    Not sure which instructions you followed so will give the following just in case. The following from Manage your auto-renewing subscriptions - Apple Support just worked for me with the minor differences of instead of the screen showing "Manage App Subscriptions" it shows a section titled "Subscriptions" in light gray and centered below that the word "Manage" in blue.
    Use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to manage subscriptions
    From the Home screen, tap App Store.
    Tap Featured from the menu at the bottom.
    Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap your Apple ID. If you don't see your Apple ID, tap Sign In and enter your information. Then tap your Apple ID.
    Tap View Apple ID.
    If prompted, enter your password and tap OK.
    On the Account Settings screen, scroll down and tap Manage App Subscriptions.
    Tap the subscription you want to manage, then choose a subscription category.
    Use the options to manage your subscription. You can choose a different subscription period, or turn off Auto-Renewal.

  • Recovery from Tape

    Hi Guru(s),
    Can any one tell me the procedure that, how to restore a backup data from Tape.
    Because i have taken the database backup on Tape.
    waiting for your kind response.
    Regards,
    Rajeev K

    And how did the rman backup get on tape? Did you have rman write directly to tape or were the rman backup files copied to tape manually?
    If rman wrote the backup directly to tape then rman should be able to restore directly from tape, which means you have an rman compatiable tape management system, which again you have not bothered to identify!
    As a general rule before posting stop and think of everything someone would need to know to answer your question then post that information in your initial post. Often that means the actual Oracle commands in question and Oracle response. If someone asks you three or four questions about your information when you respond do not answer just one or two of the questions but instead provide all requested information.
    If you manually copied the backup files to disk then you just copy them off tape back to the location where the disk files were written by rman and then your use rman to restore the database.

    Wei,
    You can restore redo logs from below command.
    brrestore -a <start_log#>-<end_log#> -c -d util_file -r <Oracle_Home>\database\initSID.utl
    If you want to do a restore & recovey you can go for point intime recovery. Here You need to restore online backup & then additionally need to apply redologs which were generated after the online backup.

  • Free tape stuck as offsite ready?

    I have a tape that’s marked as “offsite ready” despite the fact that I “marked it as free” and subsequently erased it.
    It does not show up as belonging to any protection group and a detailed inventory on the tape doesn’t appear to change its status.
    It also does not show up in the tape management report as a tape ready for offsite despite being marked as such in the console.
    Any help in rectifying this?
    Thanks
    EDIT: sorry additional info, DPM 2012 R2 UR4.

    Sorry to hear about that!
    While we work on root causing/fixing that, you could probably try a workaround which might help here.
    Since the tape is erased/marked free and not associated with any protection group, you can remove the tape from DPM DB and perform inventory thereafter.
    Unfortunately removing tape from DPM DB is not supported in UI. However, you could follow the steps listed down in one of the forum threads to remove the tape from DB. Sharing snapshot of the thread below as pasting links is not working for me:
    To remove a tape media from the over due tape report, you can run a SQL script to remove the media from the DPM database.
    To run the script, perform the following steps:
    1)  Open the DPM console and under the reporting tab, double-click the "tape management" report and select the number of weeks you want a report for (up to 4 weeks).
    2)  Once the report opens- go to the page that list Over Due Tapes.
    3)  Make a note of the "Tape labels"  for the tapes you want to remove from the DPM database so they will no longer show up on the report.
    4) Make a backup of the DPMDB Sql database before proceeding using the following command:
         DPMBACKUP -db (The database will be saved in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\Volumes\ShadowCopy\Database Backups folder.
    5) Open SQL Enterprise manager and connect to the Server_name\$MS$DPM2007 instance. (For DPMM 2010 connect to MSDPM2010 instance)
    6) Under DATABASES - Highlight the DPMDB entry - then click on "NEW QUERY" button.
    7)  Copy / paste the following SQL script into the new query window.
    ---------- START COPY HERE -------------
    -- overdue tapes
    -- for clarity, set up the parameter as a variable
    declare @paramTapeLabel as nvarchar(256)
    set @paramTapeLabel = N'SAMPLE_TAPE_LABEL_NAME'
    -- keys
    declare @vMediaId as guid
    declare @vGlobalMediaId as guid
    -- if the delete gives trouble, add keyset after cursor
    declare cur_label cursor
     for select MediaId, GlobalMediaId
     from tbl_MM_Media
     where label = @paramTapeLabel;
    open cur_label
    while (0 = 0)
    begin
     fetch next from cur_label into @vMediaId, @vGlobalMediaId
     -- test for being done
     if @@fetch_status <> 0 break;
     print 'Deleting MediaId = ' + cast(@vMediaId as varchar(36))
     -- do a set of deletes atomically
     begin transaction;
     delete from tbl_MM_TapeArchiveMedia
      where MediaId = @vMediaId;
     delete from tbl_MM_MediaMap
      where MediaId = @vMediaId;
     delete from tbl_MM_ArchiveMedia
      where MediaId = @vMediaId;
     delete from tbl_MM_Global_ArchiveMedia
      where MediaId = @vGlobalMediaId;
     delete from tbl_MM_Global_Media
      where MediaId = @vGlobalMediaId;
     delete from tbl_MM_Media
      where current of cur_label;
     commit transaction;
    end
    close cur_label
    deallocate cur_label
    -------------- END COPY HERE ----------------------
    8)  replace the tape label name parameter in the script with the name of the tape label from the over due tape report that you want to delete.
            set @paramTapeLabel = N'SAMPLE_TAPE_LABEL_NAME'      <--- replace tape label between the single quotes ' '
    9) Execute the SQL script.
    10)  Repeat steps 8. and 9. for each tape label that you want to delete.
    Regards, Mike J. [MSFT] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
    I am not sure if this would work and hence do remember to backup your DB before trying out database operations
