Tape Trouble
Intermittent problem. My digitizing sometimes stops with the message
"Tape trouble. Check VTR. Do not attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first."
If I hit continue it may then capture the same clip fine.

problem, but I'm getting this tape trouble error when
I hook it up to a D5 machine digitzing 1080i. I
wonder if it's some other issue - like a drive speed
problem - although everything appears to be working
fine.
OK - update - I switched from 1080i-10 bit to 1080i-8 bit and now everything works. As I suspected, it appears that the error message was misleading - the issue was not the VTR but system performance. In my case, my Sonnet 5-disk array is just barely up to 8 bit 1080i, and 10-bit is too much for it....

Error Message "Tape Trouble - Check VTR"
I am using a Panasonic VTR AJ-D450(via Component and RS422 deck control @ DVC Pro 50 resolution) capturing with a Blackmagics Extreme HD and I get the following error message:
"Tape trouble--check VTR. Do no attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first."
The tape keeps running with this message up on the screen but the drive has stopped capturing. There are no timecode skip warnings and no other indications.
The main problem is that the capture using Blackmagic Deck Control is perfect, this message appears only in the FC2 capture. In another topic, Aja resolved this issue with a patch.
There are no error messages on the deck display which tells me the deck & tape are actually ok. But has anyone else experienced this and have knowledge about it?

Thank you for the support, I had solved the problem using the Keyspan USB where the Final Cut 2 started to capture the image normally.
I am not sure now about the compatibility between Blackmagics Decklink and RS422 of Panasonic VTRs.

I have a new error message, when I am trying to digitize Betacam footage via my Kona LHe card
It reads "Tape Trouble. Check VTR. Do not attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first." Then an OK button
The UVW-1600 keeps playing but I am having to try and digitize one clip at a time. This is definitely slowing my day down.
Any suggestions?

when i am logging and capturing, capturing stops and i get the message tape trouble check vtr. i read some post that it was an AJA problem and i called their tek support and they sent me the pulling txt file to put in my pluggins folder and the problem still is going on. i also uninstalled and reinstalled the AJA software. i am using a panasonic aj-sd930 dvc pro 50 deck running through the AJA IO using fcp 6.i have also trashed my prefs and still nothing. is there someting i'm missing?
I'm having the same problems but with a very different configuration. We tried everything from changing the wiring to trying a different setup for the capturing video card and no luck. At long last, trashing the preferences allowed us to digitize for 10 minutes straight instead of 2 minutes bits. Wether it was just a lucky break or really a temporary fix remains to be determined.
Btw, to which codec are you digitizing to? -
Capture Error Message: Tape Trouble--Check VTR
On certain sections of different Digital Betacam source tapes (via SDI and RS422 deck control--Sony J-30 deck @ DVC Pro 50 resolution) I get the following error message:
"Tape trouble--check VTR. Do no attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first."
The tape keeps running with this message up on the screen but the drive has stopped capturing. There are no timecode skip warnings and no other indications. Was wondering if this message is generated by Kona (will check with AJA on Monday) or FCP? I have successfully captured other sections from the same tape. Tape dub stock is brand new.
Perhaps the warning is correct and some anomally is being detected on the tape at only certain capture points on the same tape. There are no error messages on the deck display which tells me the deck & tape are actually ok. These pro decks are pretty good at letting you know if there's a tape slack, tape moisture or control track problem. But has anyone else experienced this and have knowledge about it?

SteveSounds like the VCR is sending false signals, or they are true, and you just don't see the problem when the deck sends the message to FCP.... I'd be prone to start trouble shooting this by resetting all the parameters of the playback machine in it's on screen menu etc... I'd suppose too that if there is the slightest error being detected, the deck will kick out the capture process. So might need to have the deck sent to maintenance.

Hi All, I just solved a print to video issue with the help of Joe at Apple support (thanks Joe for the tip on outputting to the HV20!) and a lot of futsing and trying many things. I thought I would share my discoveries in case any of you run into the same problem. I was trying to output a 20 minute HDV sequence to tape for a master HDV tape to give my clients. I couldn't play it out through the timeline because I am using a Canon HV20 camera to output to and it doesn't have a record button to manually start the record, so you have to have the computer tell the camera to start recording. Thus, I had to do print to video option. (This tip was thanks to Joe). But, each time I tried to print to tape the process of "conforming HDV video" would quit at about 10%, other times at something like 56%. I would get an error that read "The specified file is open and in use by this or another application." I had no other programs running and figured it was a render issue. So I rendered again and again before hitting the edit to video. Still the same issue. Finally, here's what seemed to work. I disabled the screensaver (just in case), I created a new sequence, I copied from the old sequence and pasted into the new, I rendered the timeline in sections completely, then I went to print to video, then I sat and prayed. It worked. I'm not sure what was going on, but these are the steps that finally got it to work. If any of you wiser than I in the ways of Final Cut have thoughts, they are welcome. I'm just happy that I finally succeeded and thought I would share in case someone like myself is out there struggling with this issue and wandering the streets muttering to themselves and having their loved ones begin discussing an intervention as was beginning to happen to me.

Disabling spotlight for FCP scratch drives (or folders) is a common solution to this kind of problem...
It make sense because the "file is in use by another application" is usually an error that you get if spotlight is indexing files so it's spotlight that is using your file at the moment and it's normal that when you tried again you did not get any error... just because spotlight has ended indexing...
Do a search on the forum and you will find other threads about the same problem...
It's important to tell spotlight not to search your fcp scratch because you could get the same error in critical moments such as when FCP is doing an HDV conforming and sometimes it is possible to loose what was rendered until you got the error (so if you are at 99% after 2 hours waiting it is not a nice situation... don't you think?)... -
I have been installing several FCP 5.1 on new MacPro Intel G5's since last December. And I have been getting reports from the editors who operate these systems that they are getting error reports from FCP about the VTR. We have tried many different approaches to solve the problem, but to no avail. Part of the problem is that it is intermittent. What we are using are brand new MacPro Intel G5's with with 8GB RAM. Besides the internal OS drive, there is another internal 500GB drive for FCP media. The MacPro is at 10.4.8. FCP is at version 5.1.4. We are using Blackmagics MultiBridge Pro as the video/audio interface. That is at version 5.9.2 which is current. This uses the Decklink machine control software which is also 5.9.2. We connect machine control via a 9 pin RS-422 cable. The video is connect via the SDI port on the MultiBridge and the SDI on the VTR. We are using the 8 bit uncompressed setting. The throughput on the hard drive is more than adequate. Audio is analog. The tapedecks are Panasonic DVC Pro. We are using the Panasonic RS-422 protocol setup in FCP Device Control Setup. What the editors are reporting is that while digitizing they will get this error message on the screen and FCP stops digitizing. The first error message reads as follows "Tape trouble. Check VTR. Do not attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first." They will then click the OK button and this error message will appear twice again. After the third time they get this message. "Capture Now has reached the end of the tape. All existing footage between the point where you started the capture and the end of the tape was captured successfully" They click on OK and the error message disappears and that is it. The VTR is still running and is not at the end of tape. The editors rewind the tape to where the digitizing was halted and then begin again to digitize. The error message may or may not appear again. There is no break in timecode. FCP does not crash, there is nothing listed in any of the log files. Has anyone else run across this? Anyone have any ideas for a solution? We've tried just about everything we can think of. Thanks in advance for the help.
I have a problem tape that gives me the message "Capture Now has reached the end of the tape, etc." every 18 seconds or so after which the VTR stops and happily starts to rewind. The tape was recorded in DVCAM and I had no problem capturing it some time back in November on a different machine. Now the same client wants me to capture it again and the tape simply does not work.
As I have saved all the previously captured material on the original drive in the office and also made a backup tape on a miniDV cassette (again recorded in DVCAM), I thought that the backup tape would work but no such luck! The symptoms are the same - 17-18 seconds of playback, then "end of tape" and rewind. This behavior does not change when I simply play the tape back or try to capture to FCP, iMovie or iDive. Setting capture to Non-controllable device also did not help because it was the VTR that could not handle the tape, not FCP.
This is very strange - the first capture in November gave me no trouble. Then I used a new Sony HDR-25 or some such deck, at home I have a new DSR11; the tape is the same. Going in 18-second capture sessions, I have downloaded all the material that the client needs but it was very embarrassing sitting near the guy and not being able to reign in the machinery. I searched this forum but found no workaround. Can anyone point to a place where things like this get explained, advice given, empathy offered? Thank you.

I am using a Dual Pro G5 PowerMac, running a recently installed upgrade from HD to FCP Studio with Blackmagic decklink and a Panasonic AJ-D950. Since we upgraded, everytime we capture footage we get the "Tape trouble. Check VTR. Do not attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first".
We can print to tape without a problem, and I have tried changing all the device control settings but still have problems. It's not the capture card, as we can use Blackmagic deck control to capture without a problem. When we switch start up disks back to OSX Panther, we can also capture using FCP HD without a single error.
I know that someone else has had the same issues which were fixed with a capture card firmware upgrade (AJA card though) , but that has been tried and does not work in this situation.
If anyone can shed some light that would be great.
Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.5) XRaid Final Cut StudioI wonder if this is caused by the deck polling problem that FCP5 brought about. FCP5 doubled the amount of deck polling it does during pre-roll and Panasonic decks don't like that.
A couple of my support clients use a plug-in that Aja tech support passed on to me. The plug returns polling to pre-FCP5 levels. I think the plug was written by Panasonic.
Try contacting Panasonic tech support to see if that's the case. -
im having trouble connecting my macbookpro to the tv. im using a mini display port to hdmi adapter, when i switch tv/video to hdmi on the tv nothing pops up, and i dont have the arrangement tap on the display settings, please help!
I've found that the order of operations, so-to-speak, can be important when hooking up mini display port to HDMI. I have the most success with the following operations in this order:
1) Plug HDMI cable into mini displayport adapter (the cable should not be plugged into either the TV or the computer at this point)
2) Plug the mini displayport end of your new super-cable to the computer.
3) Plug the HDMI end into your TV.
4) Switch inputs on your TV to the proper input.
5) If still nothing on the TV, try a different HDMI port on your TV.

We use Embarqmail from CenturyLink on our home computer. We can get to our email on our iPod, but we have trouble opening the mail. When we tap on an email, sometimes they open; most often they don't. Is there a solution?
Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

Trouble capturing just audio from beta tapes
Hello, I am trying to capture some audio-only beta tapes and having trouble. The deck is all hooked up correctly (deck to IO box to mac), and I followed the manual instructions on how to create an audio only capture setting. When I go to capture the audio, I can hear the audio playing and it says "now capturing", but when it stops I get an error saying "Final cut was unable to read the movie file just captured." Is anyone familiar with this kind of problem? Let me know if you need anymore information about my settings (unfortunately I am relatively new to final cut).

MikeTry this (no guarantees but it used to work): Go into your scratch disk settings and enable "capture video and audio to separate files." Wasn't consistently a problem, but when it was, this solved it. But I used to get the error when tried to initiate the audio only capture. Be sure and turn this off before you capture video and audio.
Also, what happens if you try and capture video and audio of the same section? You can always just export the audio and then delete the capture. -
Having trouble outputing to tape via firewire
I'm trying to output to tape via firewire. However I'm only recording audio and not video. Device control preset is Firewire NTSC. Video playback preset is Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480)
Any suggestion?Make sure the your Video out is set to ALL FRAMES along with the firewire.
I've no experience with the deck so can't offer any help with it's settings.
As a trouble shooting measure, does the video show up if you use another DV/Analog converter (then on to a TV monitor to visually verify)?

I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from AJA, but am still having trouble outputting to tape.
Well, this is admittedly making my head spin, but would it be possible, with that level of frame rate mismatch, for recording to even take place? The deck was definitely set for 23.98 and PsF (that's what both the indicators said).
At a point of boiling frustration, I performed an Assemble Edit (instead of the typical Insert, after I blacked a tape). When doing that - just for the heck of it - the recording went on for 83 minutes, it gave me a Lost Lock with 1 minute left in our end credits. I then rewound the tape for about 60 minutes and played. Got a Lost Lock in 20 seconds with a picture dropout.
Since you're familiar with the deck, does this seem at all plausible? Does this feed your theory about a frame rate/communication mismatch? -

Custom view for section header in TableView
Hello, I want to put a custom view, which I created in Interface Builder, as a section header for my TableView. I created a method in the HeaderViewController to set the label in the TableView header but the header doesn't change. I also tried manipu
