Target boot not working

I am trying to target boot a 2008 Macbook Pro (dead logic board) with a 2006 Macbook Pro acting as the host via firewire. The hard drive from the target mac is not showing up on the host, any suggestions?

Put the HDD from the dead MBP in an enclosure and connect it to the 2006 MBP.
Ciao.

    i just posted a message but i think it's in the wrong section..
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Notebook-PC-questions/sd-card-boot-and-usb-boot-not-working/m-p/9...
    Hi, i just got a HP ProBook  4530s , I5 processor, Intel HD 3000 , i have a problem with it, i can't boot on any usb or sd card, i tried all linux versions i could find and also some live windows and bartPE, on my sd card i get the "Disk read error" as soon as i choose the booting device and on usb it goes a little bit further i can see the linux logo some processes starting and then same error related to write on disk, the sd card and usb are not in read only mode and on my other laptop a older one 6730s everything works...
    Also all the usb and sd card work perfect in windows, when i boot from internal HDD.
    Is there a fix for it??  Or can anybody that has this laptop test if it works booting from usb or sd card, maybe it's a problem with this unit..
    i have tried all available bios verions and various usb devices but as i said the usb sticks all worked on my other laptop but not on this one.
    Oh and also is there a bios option to stop virus check on boot? as far as i could test that is the only option in bios that is not there and i can't test with it ON/OFF.. any help would be apreciated because i can return the laptop for 30 days and i allready have it for one week. and i really need this option to work.
    PS - sorry for my bad english but i'm from Europe

    do >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power cord removed
    Yes, I've tried this. I pulled the power cable, waited two minutes, hit the CMOS button, and also removed the battery, and waited another minute.
    After which, I loaded optimized defaults, but the problem remains.

  • Secure boot not working with MSI Z77a-G45 And system reserve not showing

    Ok so i re did my windows after i did a zero fill on my hard drive as it was showing a corrupted sector on my disk that seemed to fix it for now, until it comes back if it does crossing my fingers it gone for good. But now i can't seem to get Secure boot to work i mean i did not have it before as i just slapped the motherboard in with a existing windows, that was to be expected but this is a clean install of windows 8.1 and i even have secure boot on but its not working and reports as off in windows.  Is it because i have my bios set to legacy+UEFI??? would that make secure boot not work??. i even went as far as turning it off and back on again the secure boot setting nothing made a difference.  I mean its not a big deal bit would be nice to know why its not working, also another wired thing and i will post pictures of it, as i cant see my system reserved partition in disk management but diskpart says it there, i will post those pictures any ideas??.

    fixed it is my legacy+uefi another forum got back to me.

  • Is fast boot not working for you? This is how you get it working correctly...

    Ok so after two days of trying to register on this site, the 50th activation email finally worked...
    Anyway I was trying to figure out why fast boot wasn't making much of a difference it seemed like once it booted quick but may have just been random. My setup is Z77a GD65 with two Samsung 830 128GB in RAID 0.
    It was taking about 30 seconds from pushing the power button to getting into windows and that was with fast boot enabled. That did not seem right. After messing around for a while and researching I came across many mixed reviews about doing this or doing that. Windows 8 Feature... The windows 8 feature is from my understanding and research for secure boot...
    If your just wanting the faster boot times using fast boot. Just enable MSI Fast Boot, and install the Fast Boot utility so you can get back into the bios. When you enable fast boot, this disables usb devices etc so you can't get into the bios when booting. This little utility is really useful as it will boot you from windows right into your bios etc. KEEP READING STILL NEED TO DO MORE!!!!!
    Now for fast boot to work correctly you need to make sure you installed windows 8 in uefi mode. I read a couple people ask this question but I don't think they got the right answer or people just said yea I have a uefi motherboard and windows 8. That is not what people have been asking you.
    To get this working correctly format a flash drive using rufus while choosing your win 8 iso.
    You can get that here and it explains it and the settings to choose. I had to break up the link as the forum would not let me post the link. Maybe a mod can fix the links.
    eightforums .com/tutorials/15458-uefi-bootable-usb-flash-drive-create-windows.html
    After that is done you should then see in the bios a boot option for a UEFI usb flash drive. Make sure your boot mode is using UEFI. Otherwise it will be using legacy mode and not show uefi devices. I selected UEFI only just to make sure. Then choose this uefi flash drive as your first boot device and save and reboot to install windows from this uefi flash drive.
    It should look like this
    Once your at the install screen delete your partititons from the drive you are going to install windows on. So that it is unallocated. Then select new and apply. This will create 4 partitions. Here is a nice quide for doing that and explains it all. eightforums .com/tutorials/2328-uefi-unified-extensible-firmware-interface-install-windows-8-a.html
    Basically your partitions should look like this.
    Once you have installed windows you will then know if you installed in uefi as your splash screen will be different. Instead of just the MSI splash screen you will then see the windows loading square/circle as well on this same splash screen. You will now have a boot option called UEFI Windows Boot Manager. Select that one as your first boot device and then enable MSI Fast Boot.
    Sorry if this post is cluttered I will add some more pics and clean it up in a bit. It's really early.

    If one SSD fails, you lose the data on both SSDs.
    In your case, you lose 128 GB.
    Period.
    You continue to argue on silly things and you miss the main point:
    RAID 0 on SSDs does not make any sense.
    RAID 0 (striped volume) has been designed for spinners.
    It's a workaround to reduce the access time (a few miliseconds) caused by the mechanical parts of the HDD.
    For a SSD (with a few microseconds access time) does not bring any boost.
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-raid-benchmark,3485-10.html
    On contrary: shorter lifetime for both SSDs
    So (for the last time) the best solution in your case is:
    Put the OS on the first SSD (drive C) and the other programs/games on the second one (drive D).
    There is no need to kill both SSDs at the same time (for nothing).
    And finally, talking about this silly "fast boot" of yours:
    5,10,20, or 30 seconds is something irrelevant.
    Simply because you get the max speed on an "empty" OS only.
    With every installed app (most of them come with bloatware anyway), your boot time is getting longer and longer.
    On the other hand, who cares if it takes 10 or 20 seconds?
    Only someone with mental problems needs to boot up the computer all day long.
    99.99% of the users boot up the computer once or twice per day.
    From my point of view, this topic is closed.
    You're free to think and do anything you like.
    I take it you are extremely hard headed and only view this from your opinion. Even with your logic of "If a drive fails you lose 128GB of data is wrong." If a drive fails I would lose 256GB of data if the RAID was full...
    The way you originally worded it made it sound like you thought RAID 0 only uses the capacity of one drive... I was trying to clear that up by saying it uses the capacity of both drives and ends up being 256GB capacity but I guess you couldn't wrap your head around what I was trying to say.
    Think what you want... but everyone I know on all of the tech forums I have been on for years, "EVGA, HARD, etc" 99% of users prefer running OS in RAID 0 on SSD's. Anyone with half a brain does not store important files on a RAID 0 array. I even created a new thread on EVGA asking how members prefer installing Windows with two identical SSD's. Most of them said they always run a RAID 0 for OS on SSD's. A couple others said they prefer running Windows/Programs on one SSD, and Games on the other. Usually that is because when they reformat they can simply re initialize the steam directory on the second SSD and then you don't have to reinstall all of your games.
    I respect your opinion but saying RAID 0 on SSDs does not make any sense is crazy talk. And that fast boot is only for people with mental problems lol... you sir have issues. Why do you think they made this feature? Why do people OC? A lot of people do it because it is fun, they are enthusiast, and they like to push a system. Why do people buy SSDs if its only a few seconds faster when you only turn on your computer once twice a day? When you only open an app or launch a game a couple times a day.

  • Target="_blank" not working........plz help me..

    My requirement is to open a new (child) window when the user pushes
    a button on a (parent) window. I need to create a new instance
    of a bean, populate it, and then pass it to the child window for
    display.
    i tried this way
    To open JSP in new window just use target directive e.g.:
    <form action=myjsp.jsp method=post target=_blank>
    its not working...
    One additional question if I may:
    I don't want to open a new window for every action a user could
    take on the screen. Sometimes, I just want to post to the
    servlet and forward the jsp to the one window that is open.
    If I put the TARGET directive in, wouldn't I always open a new
    window?
    Is this still the best way to do this given this additional
    requirement? If yes, how do I alter it so that I don't always
    go to a new window?
    Thanks!!!!!!

    Thanks for the response...
    can i use some thing like this.....
    i mean document.form.action in window.open
    something like below...
    sb.append("input type=\"submit\"
    =\"submit\" Name="Submit"
    onClick="window.open(document.MyForm.action='/phmuni/fo
    m/combineDockets.jsp' , "myWindow");" value="Print " >
    ");YOu don't have to use action if you just want to go to another page. If you do need to do something before you open the new window, you may create a function (Javascript). Do some things (like the action) and then open a new window within that function. Then within your onClick tag, just call that function.

  • Target mode not working restating holding T

    How do I restart in target disc mode with MAcbook pro , firewired to another mac, restarting holding the "T". It is not working,  I have to go to system preferences > startup Disk > and do Target Disk mode.
    Before I could just hold the "T " on restart and it would do it. How can I make that function work again?

    Make sure you are starting up the computer while pressing and holding down the T key.

  • GPP item-level targeting filter not working as expected

    I am trying to set the Internet Explorer homepage via user Group Policy Preferences (GPP) registry setting for a very specific group of users.  I am using item-level targeting to accomplish this but am having trouble getting the logic working as expected.
    Here is my item-level targeting filter:
    The user is a member of the security group CONTOSO\FireRescueDept
    AND this collection is false
         The user is a member of the security group CONTOSO\EmergencyManagementDept
         OR the user is a member of the security group CONTOSO\PublicSafetyDivision
    The user in question is a member of both CONTOSO\FireRescueDept and CONTOSO\EmergencyManagementDept.  I believe this means that this particular registry GPP setting should NOT apply to the user in question and that is the outcome I desire.
    Here is how I'm thinking about it:
    The user is a member of CONTOSO\EmergencyManagementDept; therefore, "The user is a member of the security group CONTOSO\EmergencyManagementDept" evaluates to TRUE.
    Since the other item in the collection is connected with the boolean OR operator, the collection evaluates to TRUE regardless of the evaluation of "The user is a member of the security group CONTOSO\PublicSafetyDivision."
    The item-level targeting filter is looking for the collection to evaluate to FALSE.  Since the collection has evaluated to TRUE, the evaluation "This collection is false" is FALSE.
    Because of the AND operator in front of "This collection is false", both "The user is a member of the security group CONTOSO\FireRescueDept" and "This collection is false" must evaluate to TRUE in order for the item-level targeting
    filter to determine that the user in question to apply the GPP setting the filter is attached to.  However, since "This collection is false" has already evaluated to FALSE, the filter as a whole should evaluate to FALSE and this GPP setting
    should not apply.
    However, according to gpresult it does apply.
    Please advise.  I want this particular setting to apply to users in the CONTOSO\FireRescueDept group unless they are a member of CONTOSO\EmergencyManagementDept and/or CONTOSO\PublicSafetyDivision.

    In my experience, it DOES work with universal groups... Are you
    suffering from token bloat? How many groups is the user a member of?

  • Cp6 + AS3 swf : "target == stage" not working

    Hello,
    I've done a SWF where I want to reset stage when clicking outside objects.
    The SWF alone works perfectly but does not inside Captivate.
    I did a simplified version :
    mc.visible = false;
    stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, clickOutside, false, 0, true);
    function clickOutside(e:MouseEvent):void
              if (e.target == stage)
                        mc.visible = true;
    The line :   if (e.target == stage)
    does not work anymore.
    Does importing SWF in Cp adds another level (stage is Cp scene, the SWF parent) ?
    Thanks.

    The captivate slide is the object capturing the event. Why don't you use an invisible button or transparent movieclip to capture the event? Then check if e.target.name == instance name.

  • PXE boot not working on some models

    We have a very strange situation that I was hoping someone could shed some light on.
    setup:
    ZDM 7 IR4HP1
    multiple VLANS
    situation:
    PXE boot does not work on any model workstation other than dell 760 if connected to the network in any valn other than VLAN1 where the server resides.
    dell 760 can be PXe booted in any vlan
    any other model machine can only be PXE booted in VLAN 1 which is where the PXE server is.
    PXE debug log shows nothing recorded at all from machines other than the 760's
    non-760 desktops will recieve the Proxy address of the PXE server, etc, but for some reason they show multiple gateways and the correct gateway is always last. the extra gateway numbers are coming from switches.
    I have no clue as to why dell 760's will PXE boot perfectly every time and in any VLAN (they only get one gateway and it's the correct one) but any other type of machine will fail every time if they are not in VLAN 1
    sometimes the non-760's will get PXE error E78 No boot file name ...
    other times no PXE error but an error "could not contact the boot server"
    HELP!

    I have just encountered this issue myself (ZCM10.2.1). I have no idea where the issue is coming from, within windows, linux or osx its perfect... Today I blew away my entire ZCM install (working on migrating) but still have the same issue!!! Were using HP Procurve switches using OSPF for routing, I just restarted our core cisco router but can't verify if it helped, I'll let you know.

  • Satellite M40-237: CD Boot not working + is USB flash drive boot possible

    *Model: Satellite M40-237 (PSM40E)*
    I decided to reinstall windows, my hard drive is currently formatted. So as usual, boot from Windows CD is needed to start instalation but it simply won't boot. I never had problems like this, boot always worked. It is like there is no bootable CD in the drive (but it is bootable and it is working on another PC).
    - i have the latest BIOS
    - BIOS detects optical drive and everything is ok, HDD is primary ODD is secondary
    - i tried selecting boot priority with F12 and/or setting it from BIOS, but it won't work either way
    What could be the problem here? Drive not working properly (i hope it is that and not something worse)? I had some problems with the drive i before (writing...), but it reads CD/DVD's normally and like i said boot was working fine before. I cleaned the lens a little, disconected it and put it back. Is there anything more i can do ?
    I am trying to find someone who has the drive that fits so i can try with that one, but who knows when will that be.
    Now, here is the second question i have related to this. Because my laptop is practically useless currently (i can't install anything), is it possible to boot from:
    a) external USB optical drive
    b) USB flash drive
    Bios on this laptop has no USB boot option, it has HDD / CD / FDD / network. But I've red somewhere that FDD = USB if legacy emulation is enabled.
    If that is correct i should just plug the USB drive and select FDD as boot option ? If i can't find USB optical drive, i was thinking of making USB bootable flash disk and copying windows xp installation on it. So once it boots into DOS i just start setup from the stick.
    tnx

    First of all I have to say that the booting from USB flash memory (USB stick) is not possible and you shouldnt waste the time trying this.
    Regarding your CD/DVD drive booting issue
    Well, its really strange it sounds a little bit like a kind of master/slave/c-sel settings issue. But usually you should get a IDE (#0 or #1) error if one of the devices (HDD or ODD) would be not recognized ?:|
    The whole story sounds mysteriously
    Maybe there is a firmware issue
    Several months ago a friend of mine was not able to boot from the CD.
    He entered the BIOS and set the BIOS back to the default settings.
    This helped
    This is a suggestion but I really dont know if it helps.

  • Targetting mc not working

    I have a movie clip, whose instance name is unique and is
    'focusfacts'.
    I have a function:
    function scaledown() {
    this.focusfacts.gotoAndPlay(2);
    trace("I've found the scaledown function");
    The function is called from a button elsewhere, and it can be
    found... I get the trace value popping up nice and clearly. BUT,
    for some reaon that absolutely bemuses me beyond belief, is that
    the gotoAndPlay(2) command on the movie clip (focusfacts) is quite
    simply not working. I have also tried naming the frame and telling
    gotoAndPlay command referencing the name - nothing.
    The only thing I can think of is that somehow the fact that I
    am using scenes (even though the code and the mc are on the same
    scene, in fact the same frame!), that maybe there's an issue with
    referencing the mc itself?
    All ideas welcome. BTW, except for the fact that the content
    is different I have virtually the same code working fine for other
    mcs in the scene. Weird.
    Cheers, Matt

    Matt-
    Have you tried tracing both this and this.focusfacts in your
    function call to see what the values are. This might help, because
    if they come up as undefined then it might just not be referencing
    your movie clip correctly. This can happen since scope is different
    from regular old flash buttons and button components.
    I am sure you have checked but is the content you want to
    play on frame 2 of the focusfacts movie clip?
    Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Question mark folder at startup, safe boot not working

    Last night my iMac froze up, Force Quit didn't work, and I used the Power button to shut it off.  When trying to restart, it was getting stuck at the grey Apple.
    I tried unplugging the peripherals and restarting; zapping the PRAM and restarting; safe boot and restarting.  Safe boot did it.
    I then ended up going through those steps a few more times as my iMac starting freezing up again.  One of those times I changed all my applications in the dock that were set to launch at login to not do so, wondering if that was somehow causing a problem.  I also took a folder of recent items I'd created, mostly a LOT of PDFs of newspaper articles, burned it to a DVD and deleted the folder to free up more memory if that was part of the problem (I'm running out).  I then restarted from the Apple menu and it shut down through safe boot and then restarted without safe boot and did so just fine.  I ran Disk Utility and very few if any permissions needed repairing.  And it was operating OK for a bit and then froze up again.
    Now I'm getting the question mark folder at startup and safe boot isn't working.  What should I be trying next?  Lion Recovery with Command-R?  I'm relatively new to Lion, but it had been working OK for me for a while now.
    What other things should I try?  Would Target Disk mode possibly work from the MacBook I'm using now, which doesn't have Lion installed?

    The question mark folder usually means that the
    firmware could either not find a valid operating
    system to boot, or, it could not find a hard disk
    with an operating system on it.
    Have you tried booting to Lion Recovery?  If
    you can, then go into Disk Utility and do a
    Repair Disk on your OSX volume.  If the
    OSX volume is not showing up, you may need
    to do a reformat and re-install.
    Since it is a 24" iMac (from your description) it was
    a pre-Lion Mac.  If you still have the original install
    disks, try booting with it and use Disk Utility from it
    to see if the hard drive is working.
    Try this first before making a road trip.

    Sda1 = Boot Partition
    Sda2 = Swap Space
    Sda3 = Root
    Sda4 = Home
    I'm trying to figure out how to add Windows 7 to this.  Now, one thing I have tired was to delete my home partition,  create an extended partition that would include space for a windows 7 install and another home partition.
    Basically split sda4 into two logical partitions.
    That works fine, I can reboot into arch linux and change the UUID in the fstab table to point to my new home directory, but on installing Windows 7 I have to have another partition for the 100mb sys reserve.
    Can I make 3 logical paritions in the current sda4 setup?  Then just have windows install to those two locations?

    Inxsible wrote:
    I am not sure Windows 7 can be installed in an extended partition. It requires primary. also, it tends to create a 100 MB hidden partition for system files which probably needs to be primary as well. So right of the bat, you need to spare 2 primary partitions for Windows. You can however move your Arch install in an extended.
    take my advice, install Windows first and then re-install Arch. It'd be a lot easier.
    Windows MUST be installed to a primary partition.
    To successfully install Windows on the same disc as an existing Arch / Linux installation you will want to pre-create an Primary NTFS partition right at the front of the drive (to prevent Windows greedily using 2 of your total 4 primary partitions) and flag all you Linux partitions as "hidden" so the Windows installer cannot "see" them - this can be checked from the windows setup before committing to anything. Once Windows is installed you can the unflag the hidden linux partition and start re-establishing Arch. I can be done but it is time consuming and very easy to get badly wrong.
    This really is no mean feat as you will need to be familiar with moving partitions with gparted (from a liveCD), flagging partitions as hidden, reinstalling and reconfiguring grub etc etc.
    As inxsible says - it is easier (and quicker) to wipe your drive and install Windows 1st.
    Back up all your data onto dvd / ext usb, copy across any custom rc.conf etc files that have been tweaked along the way to somewhere safe - boot into a live ISO and nuke away. If you create your windows partition in advance you will only use 1 primary partition as stated above - leave it to the windows installer and you lose 2 to windows
    I would also suggest creating an extended partition and your logical partition layout for Arch from a liveCD / gparted once Windows is installed to smooth the Arch install process.
    If your previous Arch was installed from the old ISO - now would be a good time to grab the new one

  • Generation 1 vms pxe boot not working

    Hi,
    I have hyperv r2 hypervisor and installed Citrix provisioning services(PVS) software(vms get OS over network with this software) in one of my vms. I have WDS and MDT configured in my dhcp server. To use the above software, I need to install provisioning
    services client software in a vm and boot over network. While booting over network, it connects pvs server and then starts normal boot. After login, that client OS will be pushed to a hard disk file on pvs server. We also have to create dhcp scope options
    66 and 67 for this. I have set it correctly. 66 is pvs server name and 67 is ARDBP32.bin. I have updated them correctly.This is how it works.
    Issues:
    1) Now I have created generation 1 vm and when I boot over network by default it goes to my wds. So I have stopped wds service in my server. Now when I boot gen1 vm over network with wdsserver service stopped, it says dhcp server:0.0.0.0. If I start wdsserver
    service, it gets IP, and contacts wds, starts network boot. This is not I want.
    2) If I create generation 2 vm and boot over network with secure boot enabled, it says successfully downloaded ardbp32.bin file, but says boot failed: efi network. failed secure boot verification.
    I am attaching screenshots for the above mentioned 1,2 and 3 issues. Can someone please help me here...
    Thanks,

    Will show you the NICs that the management OS is aware of.
    Get-NetAdapter -Physical
