Target Display Mode as a docking solution - What are the downsides?

Hi,
I have a work 13" air with T.B and a new personal imac 27" at home which also has T.B. I have found this great feature that allows you to put the air in target disk mode (hold down t whilst booting) and then boot the imac whilst holding down the option key and then select the air's disk to boot from. For me this works really well, I keep my work and personal machines seperate, I can use the same (imac's) keyboard and mouse without having to keep pairing via BT, the air gets more memory and cpu and as yet I have not noticed a lag accessing the air's SSD over thunderbolt. I appreciate I cannot run both at the same time but that is not an issue for me.
My question is can this solution if used upset / damage the OS if used frequenty 3-4 times per week? It seems a little too good to be true.
Thanks
Marc

There should be no problems as far as I can see if it works for the iMac with the drivers on the Air, the Air is just acting like an external boot drive... & yes, Target Mode is one of Apple's best ever idea.
May want to disable Software Uodates while running that way though.

  • I am changing ISPs and will be dropping two email addresses I use as AppleID's.  Can I keep them as AppleID's and use a rescue e-mail address from a new ISP?  What are the downsides if I have an iCloud address as an alias under one of those addresses?

I am about to change internet service providers and will be dropping two e-mail addresses that I use as Apple ID’s.  One is used solely for iTunes and the other is used for iCloud, mail, calendars, etc.  The second has two iCloud email address as aliases.  I will be going to a new ISP and will establish an e-mail address from that ISP as a backup in case the iCloud addresses are not available.
It has been suggested to me that I should continue to use the e-mail addresses from the old ISP as my Apple ID’s.  And that I use the e-mail address from the new ISP as a rescue e-mail address for those Apple ID’s to get any communications relating to the ID’s. That seems like a simple and straight-forward way of handling the change and would minimize the chance of complications from changing the Apple ID’s.  But, are there any downsides to handling the change in this way?  If so, what are they?

You can continue to use them as Apple ID's, change the rescue address (as you know)
You can use your iCloud address, but it won't be an alias, it's a full email address.

  • Getting alerts my browser needs upgrade. I must upgrade ios to get updated browser. What are the downsides to upgrading ios?

I have a snow leapord ios which allows safari 5.1 as the "latest" browser. Many of the sites I visit are asking me to upgrade the browser. Looking into this I found that I need to upgrade the operating system first and I want to be sure that I can do that without losing anything that is currently on my desktop. What should I expect when doing a ios upgrade, and will that include the safari upgrade as well or is it a separate task. Thanks

Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.
Upgrading the OS will upgrade Safari. Alternatively, you can switch to a product such as Firefox and stay on Snow Leopard.

  • What are the downsides to working with Proxy Media?

My iMac is one of the more powerful ones:  i7, 2 internal drives (the main one is a 256 GB flash drive), ATI Radeon HD 5750 w/1 GB VRAM, 16 GB RAM.  But I notice that when I'm trying to apply multiple effects to a compound clip and then use crop to zoom on it, it starts dropping frames all over the place and barely plowing through.
I'm wondering if I should edit with proxy media.  I know one disadvantage is the amount of space it takes to have both proxy and regular media, but I have plenty of disk space.  I edit AVCHD footage that I optimize upon import.
I will also be doing a lot of multicam editing.
So I'm thinking proxy media is the way to go.  But I have to wonder what the disadvantages to using proxy media are.  For instance, since you're editing with a lower-quality version of the video, does that mean that when you do things like color correction you aren't getting a good a final result when you switch back to the regular media?
    I'd appreciate any advice/tips.

    JDLee wrote:
....  you aren't getting a good a final result when you switch back to the regular media?
no, the color correction is done with the 'HDef' material.
proxies is just a pre-view thing; esp. when doing multicam, the amount of data shoveling from/to harddrive is enormously ... theoretically, even a fw800 connected super-fast Raid can handle only a max. of 10 HDef streams ...
I'm on consumer/hobbyist level - handling here 4 streams from usb-drives - as proxies, no problem.
when editing is done, you switch back to original/optimized and export in  shiny 100% ...

  • What are the downsides to extending an Airport Express's network with Airport Extreme?

Or are there downsides at all, assuming latest generation Airports? I think it happens more often than not that the position of the modem from your ISP in the dwelling is not the ideal location for a router, and it is sometimes inconvenient/impossible to wire an ethernet connection to the optimal location. I have an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express, and was thinking of hooking up the Express to the modem and having the Extreme extend that network, placed at the optimal router location. My concern with that setup is whether the Extreme will use all of its antennas, since the Express has fewer (6 vs 2 if I'm correct).

Or are there downsides at all, assuming latest generation Airports?
There are none. You might be confusing such a "wirelessly extended" network with a WDS, which was a horrible compromise with significant disadvantages.
The optimal location for the second AirPort might not be obvious. Keep in mind that it can only "wirelessly extend" the signal it is capable of receiving. Place it in a location where the wireless signal created by the main router remains strong, while still being able to create a network that covers your required wireless service area.
Don't worry about the number of antennas or how they are used. They're all used.

    - What can be done to idenify the root cause?
    Kind regards, Marcel.

    Hello Marcel,
It sounds like you are wanting to use the iMac in Target Display mode with your PC. Target Display mode is a feature that is supported from one Mac to another Mac according to this article:
OS X Mavericks: Use another Mac as a display
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14264
Target Display Mode lets you use a Mac as the external display for another, “primary” Mac.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Broken Graphics card Target Display mode

I have a 2009 iMac that now has a faulty graphics card, the computer crashes once photoshop runs.
I don't have the mac at the moment to test, but could I still get target display mode to work?
How well does the mac need to run before TDM can work?. If I power it up, sometimes it won't get any further than the apple logo, can it work then?
    Thanks
    Matt

I purchased a Belkin AV360 and it did not work with Target Display Mode on my new mid 2011 iMac.
After a bit of searching on why it didn't work I've found all sorts of articles on this issue with older display port devices not working with target display mode on the new Thunderbolt macs.  I sure hope this can be resolved with a firmware update, or by someone (Belkin/Kanex) making a new Thunderbolt compatible adapter.
And I don't know if anyone has confirmed it yet since the feature is so hard to take advantage of now, but I'm hoping this years iMac at least accepts 1080P signals in addition to 720P and the native panel resolution.  It would be worth the wait for an adapter if it accepts 1080P as well, which would make it at least more future proof since everything has gone to 1080P so rapidly.
I was really counting on my new iMac doubling as a TV/Console display in my room - it was part of what justified the high price of the investment and the convenience of the all-in-one design.  I would be very pleased if Apple can help resolve this.

  • Target Display Mode iMac 27 mid 2011 with Mac Mini 2011 bootcamp

    Hello,
I can't seem to use Target Display Mode with Bootcamp.
    My configuration:
    Imac 27" mid 2011 with osx 10.8.4
Mac Mini Server 2011 with osx 10.8.4, bootcamp 5 and Windows7
Both are connected via Apple genuine Thunderbolt cable (2m).
When I boot the Mac Mini into OSX then Target Display Mode works perfectly and I can see the osx installed on the Mac Mini on the iMac display.
However, when I reboot the Mac Mini into Bootcamp (windows7 x64) I can't put the iMac in Targt Display Mode and get to see Windows 7 on my iMac screen.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924#8
The following article says that this should work, however once I reboot osx on the Mac Mini the iMac leaves Target Display Mode immediatly and will not return to Target Display Mode.
Any advice? I contacted Apple Support and a Sr. Enginner said it should be supported and he's checking with a higher tier.
    Thanks

    Yes, it does.

  • What are the lock modes in Lock object

What are the lock modes in Lock object ?
    what are the divfferences between
    Exclusive , cumulative
    Shared
    Exclusive , not cumulative
Could any body explain what happens in each table lock ?
    How the lock consists ?

    HI
Lock objects are used to synchronize access to the same data by more than one program.
The lock mode controls whether several users can access data records at the same time. The lock mode can be assigned separately for each table in the lock object. When the lock is set, the corresponding lock entry is stored in the lock table of the system for each table.
There are three types of lock modes
    1.Exclusive
    2.Shared
    3.Exclusive not cummulative
Exclusive lock: The locked data can only be displayed or edited by a single user. A request for another exclusive lock or for a shared lock is rejected.
Shared lock: More than one user can access the locked data at the same time in display mode. A request for another shared lock is accepted, even if it comes from another user. An exclusive lock is rejected.
Exclusive but not cumulative: Exclusive locks can be requested several times from the same transaction and are processed successively. In contrast, exclusive but not cumulative locks can be called only once from the same transaction. All other lock requests are rejected.

    hi
I would like to know how system will pickup the doucment type while creating invoice in vf01.
i have taken off the fields  f1, f2, from the document type. in billing sub tab.  so  The moment when am creating billing system automatically displaying F2 invoice doucment creation.  What are the sources for this.

    Hi,
Hope you have maintained u2018Delivery relevant billing type F2u2019 and u2018Order relevant billing type F1u2019 in the billing tab of the Sales document type in VOV8.
If you create delivery related billing, the system will pick F2. This is controlled in Item category (VOV7). Billing relevance in Business data of Item category decides whether this is delivery related or order related. u2018Au2019 for delivery related billing; u2018Bu2019 for order related billing and so on.
Item category is determined by this combination: Sales document type + Item cat group + usage + higher level item cat.

  • Convert to Formula - what are the benefits?

    Hello Experts,
Can anybody explain to me in simple words what this function does? I have read in SAP Bex tools (by SAP Press) that it enables some custom formatting, inserting columns and allows for additional calculations based off of the query key figures. I tried to convert a query to the formula mode, but I lost all query functionality (no BW menu on rightclick, not able to add characteristics etc.), and the query doesn't refresh. Moreover, I was not able to switch this mode off...
    What are the benefits then?
I am still fairly new to BI 7.0 and currently testing it's functionalities, and I am getting more and more frustrated at it's complexity which seems to be no longer intuitive
    Thanks,
