Targeted Adjustment Tool

I'm new to PS, so please bear with me.  When I click on the targed adjustment tool (in hue/saturation adjustment layer) and then try and click on something, for ex. teeth, everything disappears and the cursor goes to the bottom right corner (show desktop). When I slide the cursor back up everything comes back up when I try and do it again the same thing happens.  I've tried multiple times and just can't seem to get it to work.  Any ideas?

Here's a suggestion that might help. Give the mouse a rest and use keyboard shortcuts.
In the Develop module use the Z key to toggle your zoom view. Then use shortcuts to enable/disable a TAT tool (e.g. Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S to enable the saturation TAT and Ctrl+Shift+Alt+N to disable TAT). While a targeted adjustment tool is active the Z key can be used to zoom.
Also, when a TAT is active hit the space bar to temporarily change the TAT into the zoom tool.

  • Beginner Question- Unable to Use Eyedropper and Targeted Adjustment Tools

When trying to use the eyedropper or targeted adjustment tools (in the HSL menu), I will grab the tool and hover over my photo and my cursor changes to the magnifying glass. When using the eyedropper the preview will reflect the white balance but when I click my photo is enlarged instead of using the tool. Help please! I know there must be a simple answer, I am just a first time user of Lightroom (previously used Bridge/Camera RAW) and am getting very frustrated. Many thanks

Yes. I've seen the same glitch occur on Mac. Not sure what is happening, but I agree, it is maddening. I stumbled upon a solution that works for me:
Press the Q key (cursor changes to the Healing Brush)
Press the W key (should now change to Eyedropper-White Balance tool)
Now the Eyedropper may work again.
I know right? Doesn't make sense, but whatever has happened to cause the Eyedropper to not work but instead bring up the Magnify tool, this sequence seems to bump it out of the glitch -- at least it's working for me.
    Hope that helps.

  • (BUG with) -  Targeted Adjustment Tool

The Targeted Adjustment tool will stop functioning after I use the magnifier.
When I attempt to use the tool, it only functions as a magnify glass.
When I quit Lightroom and relaunch it, it restores the Targeted Adjustment tool back to a functioning state.
One thing that may be triggering the bug is that I often use the photoshop keyboard commands for magnify +/- out of my 15 year habit with that tool, and it works in Lightroom too, but is this causing the Targeted Adjustment tool to suffer?

I think I also see this now (and a work-around).
    I did the following:
    1. Open Lightroom and go to Develop.
    2. Select the Target Adjustment Tool (like tone curve).
    3. Press (and hold) Spacebar, while holding that down, press (and hold) command
    4. Click to zoom in.
    5. Release the spacebar, then release the command. The cursor still shows a hand with the move-around and zoom functionality. Clicking the Target Adjustment circle in the Tone Curve box does not restore adjustment functionality.
    Workaround:
    6. Now press (and release) Spacebar. The target adjustment works now.
It appears that Lightroom does not recognize any spacebar commands while the command key is being held down. I can't enter zoom mode by holding command and then holding spacebar, and I can't exit zoom mode by releasing spacebar while command is down. In this case, it seems that pressing and releasing spacebar afterwards (when command is not down) sends the "spacebar-up" command and Lightroom gets out of the zoom mode.
Note that I can't get this to happen with any other ordering of presses/releases.
Does this help? I agree that this definitely is a bug. Now that we've narrowed it down, how do we forward this on to Adobe? Is someone reading this that can forward this on?

  • ACR 5.2 Targeted Adjustment Tool has no drop down menu

    Hello
I've just started playing with Camera Raw 5.2 and I cannot get a drop down menu for the targeted adjustment tool. When I click on it the icon remains "depressed" and I enter the tone mode. In order to get to the other modes, I have to move to the appropriate tab.
I guess I could use the key board short-cuts but I would like to know why I don't get a drop down menu.

How amazingly simple - just a bit strange as drop-down menus usually appear on a single click - thank you very much

  • Target adjustment tool Menu does not appear

    Hello
I use ACR 7.1 and I have a problem with this tool : when I clic on this icon on the top tools bar I have no menu I should get a menu with parametric curves hue saturation luminance but nothing. Of course I could use the HSL part on the right interface but I would like to know why my ACR behaviour is not has it should be.Thanks

Thanks for answer but it is not what i meant: what I said is I have no dropdown menu when I clic on Target adjustment tool icon
Uh huh...didn't I mention the fact that by default when you click on TAT you get Parametric Curves by defatult (and no, it doesn't change to the the panel, by design). If you want HSL or Grayscale you need to click on the panel to switch from curves...
You would be better off learning the actual behavior...

  • Targeted Adjustment Tool in Camera Raw 5.2

Thanks Tom for the Targeted Adjustment Tool it works great.
Where can I find documentation on the SNAPSHOT function?

    The keyboard shortcuts are:
Cmd-Option-Shift T switches to parametric curve TAT
Cmd-Option-Shift H switches to Hue TAT
Cmd-Option-Shift S switches to Saturation TAT
Cmd-Option-Shift L switches to Luminance TAT
Cmd-Option-Shift G switches to Grayscale mixer TAT
If youre on Windows, replace Cmd with Control and Option with Alt.
Click on the TAT tool and unless you are specifically got the HSL/Grayscale panel open, the default TAT will be Parametric Curves. Click in an area in the image with TAT the active tool and whatever the targets tonality will go up/down depending on whether you move the morse up/down.
Switch to HSL panel and the target will be whatever sub-panel is active: Hue, Saturation or Lightness. The TAT works the same what in HSL, click in the image and drag up/down to adjust the targeted color.
    Other than that, it's practice...
Oh, and it'll be covered in depth in RWCRCS4 (which is why it's late...so i could be sure of including the Camera Raw 5.2 update throughout the book).

  • Target Adjustment Tool

I am using CS5 12.0.4 64 bit, Vista OS.  The targeted adjustment tool lightens/darkens the entire photo instead of just the area targeted.  Don't know if tool ever worked because I never tried to target one area before.  Thank you for any help.  Maryann

That is the way it works in many adjustment panels. It is somewhat different in saturation panel and others.
But levels, curves, others affect the entire image, that is one of the main uses of masks, to limit the effect of these tools to certain areas of the image..
Half the fun is learning the application, but it is a broad and steep curve.
    lots of luck.

  • Adjustment panel and the Targeted Adjustment Tool

I have assigned the F3 key to toggle the display of the Adjustments panel. However, whenever I have an adjustment that includes the Targeted Adjustment Tool (such as curves) the F3 key activates the TAT rather than dismissing the Adjustment panel. I have to move to a non-TAT adjustment to allow F3 to dismiss the Adjustment panel. In fact, any Fn key will activate the TAT rather than it's assigned keyboard action. Is this normal behaviour? If so, it's most annoying.

No one else seeing this problem? It does not happen in CS4.
I'm guessing the "bug" appeared after I had set the Auto-Select Targeted Adjustment Tool. I have since removed the Auto-Select feature but now any Fn key will select the TAT rather than dismiss the Adjustment panel. You have to move to an adjustment without a TAT for the Fn key to dismiss the Adjustment panel. Definitely a workflow annoyance.

  • Target Adjustment Tool Not Working in 2.3RC

    Hi everyone,
Working with 2.3RC...I've just tried the TAT in the HSL panel and it's not responding. The sliders work but the TAT is inoperable.
    Has anyone else noticed this?
    Any thoughts!

    2GB RAM
    WinXP SP3
    Cheers!

I'm on a New MacBook Pro. At first the TAT seemed not to work for me, sliding up and down and then with a little sideways, left/right motion the TAT worked.
Kind of on again off again.

  • Is equal adjustment tool

“Is equal adjustment tool” is my idea to solve a problem that I have when I’m editing a sequence of photos.
    The problem:
Imagine a sequence of photos of the same model using daylight. The sunlight changes during the day and you need to delivery pictures of the same model, so need to have the same skin tone.
    The solution:
A tool that permit to get a sample of skin color of one image and “apply” this color to the other images. The idea is similar to systems that create a new camera profile (like Adobe DNGProfile), with the follow steps:
    1 – select the skin tone sample in the best result image (reference);
    2 – in other photo, select the same area (target);
3 – the tool create a correction to make target area with the same color with reference area (new camera profile?!).
It’s just an idea that I have to solve one of the most terrible problems that I’m looking every day.  I think that it's useful for many photographers. If this tool could use more than one reference point, making another areas of image with the same color for all photos, this tool will be perfect!

    Julio,
I think the desired effect would be to modify the white balance such that the sample patch is equal on both the sample and the selected images.  This would not guarantee all colors in the images would be the equal accross the images but I agree that for your application the skin tones are what is critical.  I don't see this as complicated as the DNG profiles and simply as an adjustment similar to the color picker for the current white balance tool.  A possible time-saving benefit would be that you may only have to include a white balance card with the initial image, then once that image is properly balanced and you are happy with the skin tones, you can then easily obtain that exact skin tone in the other images without re-taking white balance card images throughout the shoot.  Big time saver when light is constantly changing - and it is.
I see a lot of application for this and agree it would be useful and probably not as difficult as most of the requests on this forum - maybe it can make it in LR4 or even a 3.x version.

  • Adjustment tools in Camera Raw not working

Downloaded CS 5 and opened Camera Raw, then attempted to use the adjustment tool and received the following message "Unable to create local adjustment.  All the local adjustment controls are set to have no effect on the image."  Can anyone provide assistance please and thanks?

I had the same problem and tried turning of GPU in Photoshop and in Lightroom which did not work, however in the RAW window when I found the preferences tab which is the tab with the 3 horizontal lines and unchecked GPU there Camera Raw did start working and the blue screen was replaced by my image.  Hope this clarifies it more and you get yours to wok also!

  • Reduced range of adjustment tool options on some images

Hi. I've noticed that some of my images (both raw - CR2 - and jpg) don't get the full range of options on the adjustment tools, while other images do. e.g. no temp settings, highlights, shadows, etc etc. Using Lightroom 5 and WIndows 7. I think it must have to do with some technical setting on the images but I wouldn't know where to start figuring out what those would be.
My limited range on the adjustment brush:
    Thanks!

Many users will wish to leave their images as edited in previous versions of LR. However the highlights and shadows sliders are more effective than the old fill light and recovery sliders and there may be instances where you wish to re-edit older photos using PV 2012. There is a small icon (click image below) under the histogram in Develop for images processed using PV 2010 and clicking it gives the option to update. Adobe recommends updating images on an individual basis to begin with but you can also select all filmstrip items. So you can use the camera calibration tab or simply click the histogram icon.

  • Local white balance adjustment tool

I really like the new local white balance adjustment tool. If I could change something will be to give a real color temperature to the tool instead of a number from -100 to 100. Let me give you an example of how I used it today.
I forgot to bring some gels for my flashes for a photo shoot. I was using the flashes to illuminate the foreground and I had fluorescent lightening on the background. It was the perfect opportunity to try the new tool. I knew exactly what the color temperature for both front and back were. I applied the background color temperature of 3200k to the picture and when to locally change the foreground. At this point I was guessing what it should be at. My monitor is color calibrated but I was under fluorescent lights with my laptop. Instead I could have added +2200k or dialed 5500k to the local adjustment tool.
Please let me know if you need more information.

I'm sorry I found another discussion about this topic already. Shame on me I didn't do a more thorough search on it before.

  • Unable to Use Adjust Tool or Effects Tool

I'm using iPhoto 7.1.5. On my MacBook Pro, when I go into edit mode and click on either the Adjust tool or the Effects tool, nothing happens. No windows open to allow me to edit with these tools. The other tools (red eye, enhance, retouch, crop) work just fine.
I've tried trashing the plist file for iPhoto and also tried logging in as a different user, but the problem persists. Any help would be most appreciated!

    Before you re-install:
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
As a rule, no, re-installing the app will not affect the Library.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applcations Folder to the trash)
    2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only...’
