Targeting a frame with a flash button

I am trying to target the main frame of my frameset with a
flash button located in the left frame. button works fine when i
target _self, _top.... or the frame it is in. but if i try to
target any of the other frames in the frameset it has no effect

Read my book. You'll get it. 8)

  • Targeting a frame with a button

    hey guys
    in my lack of using Flash since macromedia's version 5, i've
    forgotten the actionscript needed for telling a button that when
    it's released, to load a url in an external iframe on a webpage.
    the actionscript toolbar in cs3 is really confusing me. any help is
    greatly appreciated.

    Create your button and give it an instance name. Then place
    this code in a separate layer at the same keyframe:

  • Problem with inporting Flash buttons into Captivate

    Hello
    I have tried looking around for the fix to this issue, I think I have seen the problem sorted, but not how they have done it.
    The problem is that i have made an interface using flash, and inported the SWF into Captivate, this is just a simple pop up menu with buttons and hyperlinks. The issue that I have come accross is that when I come to close the pop up (inside the flash swf) if there is a captivate button behind it it will click this as well. I was wondering if there was a line of AS3 coding that I can add so that when the pop up is loaded it will disbale all the captivate buttons, mouse interactions etc.
    Not sure if this should be here or in the flash forum, but as its a captivate/flash issue ive posted it here.
    Thanks in advanced for any replies

    Hi,
    Download and install ActiveX if you use Internet Explorer.
    You need to install plug-in if you use Firefox, Opera, or Safari.

  • Problem with Flash Button Sticking

    I am adding Handlers to Mouse Events using action Script 3.
    The buttons move up and down when rolling over the button. So you
    have that "wave effect" when navigating the site.
    The problem I am having is that if you rollout of the button
    before the button is done playing the movie it freezes at that
    point of the movie.
    Has anyone had this problem before? Can anyone help?
    THANKS!

    The standard reply is -
    1. Why are you using frames since there are many compelling
    reasons not to?
    2. Why are you using Flash navigation since there are many
    compelling
    reasons not to?
    Most people here don't work with (assiduously avoid) both of
    those critters,
    so, you may have trouble getting a more explicit response!

  • Flash Button Incorrect Target

    Hello, I am having difficulty with the flash button. Whenever
    my flash buttons are clicked the links are opening up in new tabs
    within the browser, rather than in my frameset. I have the target
    for the flash buttons specified to "mainFrame" within my frameset ,
    however this is not working. Are there attributes that define
    whether the link opens up a new tab or stays within the frameset?
    Thanks!
    -Rob

    Flash buttons and framesets! My two favorite things to hate.
    Gad.
    Any modifications to the targeting of the Flash button would
    have to be done
    either at the time you create it, or by editing the parent
    FLA file. If you
    created the button in DW, then that second option is not
    available to you
    because there is no parent FLA file.
    If you want to use Flash for navigation, consider this -
    1. Some people don't have Flash installed - what do they do?
    2. Search engines don't parse Flash links - your site will
    not be spidered
    3. Screen assistive devices don't parse Flash links - what
    will those users
    do?
    4. DW cannot maintain links within a Flash movie, so if you
    move or rename
    a linked file, your navigation will break - what will you do?
    It's usually a very bad idea for these reasons...
    The decision to use or not use frames should be based on a)
    your site's
    needs, and b) your willingness to accept the potential
    problems that frames
    can create for you as developer and maintainer of the site
    and for your
    visitors as casual users of the site.
    I am down on frames because I believe that they create many
    more problems
    than they solve.
    Judging from the posts here, and the kinds of problems that
    are described,
    the kind of person most likely to elect to use frames is also
    the kind of
    person most likely ill-prepared fo solve the ensuing problems
    when they
    arise. If you feel a) that you understand the problems and b)
    that you are
    prepared to handle them when they occur, and c) that you have
    a need to use
    frames, then by all means use them.
    As far as I know, the most comprehensive discussions of
    frames and their
    potential problems can be found on these two links -

  • Gray frame around flash buttons and more...

    Hi,
    1.I've used flash buttons in my home page,the problem is
    that when u view the page with explorer u see a gray frame around
    the buttons...
    It is so ugly...some one knows how to fix it without using
    the code?
    2. Another problem, the behevior "show pop up menu" is not
    valid,
    i've used it before on that page....
    i tried everything... i saved it ,linked it...
    i dont know what is the problem...
    thank you....if you can help
    Racheli

    I'm experiencing the same problems with my flash buttons. As
    you hover over them initially, a gray border surrounds them and an
    alt tag pops up that says "click here to activate this control."
    This confuses some of the visitors, becuase they perceive this as
    if the buttons do not work. I suspect it may be a browser specific
    problem...are there any quick fixes for this? Thanks for the help.

  • Browser "Back" arrows do not work with Flash buttons.

    Just can't seem to get around this problem...
    I've made several flash buttons for use in my navigation bars. They work great but the "back" arrows on the browser are always grayed out. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of browser I use.
    The site was made in Dreamweaver and the Flash buttons are imbedded within the pages. I posted the same question on the Dreamweaver forum and got some vague answers.
    Is there some code I can put into my Flash buttons?
    If you have an answer please be specific as I'm not an expert.
    The site is fireonmcginnis.com
    or just type "Fire on McGinnis" into a search engine.
    -Toastieo

    Spry or regular hyperlinks in a list or nav configuration. Either is better than Flash buttons.
    Thing is, a search bot will read the HTML in those kinds of links (spry or HTML) and index them. That way if you have an event calendar for upcoming shows, or a discography page, it can find them and will be able to make a reference to them in later search engine databases (usually about 72 hours after the indexing). With the Flash buttons there is no code for the bot to find and your upcoming events, or a downloads page if there is one, will never be seen in a search even if people look directly for "fireonmcginnis: schedule", or "music by fireonmcginnis" because to Google, Yahoo, Lycos and the others the pages simply don't exist.
    Spry is great if you have submenus, and since it can be customized using CSS, you can make it match your site layout. You can also do that with regualr hyperlinks and CSS, but spry has a more appealing look to a lot of web users and the submenus are a little harder with basic HTML.
    For the record the script should read: getURL ("http://www.site.com/page.html" "_self"); for the buttons. There'a s drop down to select _self, _blank, _parent etc. when you add the getURL script to the button.
    But... you need to stay away from Flash buttons for navigation or you're really defeating the purpose of putting a band on a website in the first place. It's about exposure and Flash buttons will severely limit that exposure, even if they work properly.

  • Flash buttons in dreamweaver 8

    Hi,
    i am having a problem with inserting flash button in
    dreamweaver 8, when i insert the buttons it appears on the page as
    a grey box with "F"(flash) and not displaying the proper text. The
    user is a standard windows users and has not administrator
    privilidges. but if an administrator loggs into the pc and does the
    exact same process then the flash button work.
    has anyone come across this problem ? does anyone know how to
    resolve
    cheers
    david

    You'll need to go back into Flash and build the links into the buttons before you create the swf's.  Look in the Flash help docs regarding the getURL function as far as the code you'll need for linking.  If you have problems, post in the Flash AS1 and AS2 forum.
    Beyond that, don't be surprised if some feedback arises here regarding using Flash buttons.

  • Problem layering FLASH buttons over embedded VIMEO video

    Hi all,
    I am trying to layer my flash buttons over an embedded vimeo video, see the problem, rollover "The Boys" button: http://thehallbrothers.com/index3.html
    I have set the vimeo video in a DIV called "stagereel" and the flash buttons in a DIV called "buttons1."
    The z-index of "stagereel" is set to 0 and "buttons1" is set to 3, but nonetheless "buttons1" shows behind "stagereel."
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    J

    Thanks for all your help Ned, but I found out the problem. When layering multiple FLASH files within the same HTML document the layer position of the FLASH elements is determined by the order of the HTML code – meaning, whatever FLASH file is last in the code will display in the topmost layer. So for my problem I just swapped the position of the Vimeo video with my flash buttons and bam the buttons play on top of the video. Hope this maybe helps others.
    SOLVED.

  • Flash button that controls breeze play button

    Is it possible to create a flash button that is scripted to
    control the play and pause button on the breeze playbar? What I am
    looking for is a way to have a button that would start a slide
    again after it has stopped and is waiting for the user to start
    again.

    Hi!
    If you want to control the viewer with a Flash button you've
    embedded in a powerpoint slide (prior to using presenter to convert
    it) try this:
    (1) Make your button in Flash, and add this Actionscript to
    the first slide (replace [btnName] with the name of your button
    instance:
    btnName.onRelease = function () {
    _root.m_controlBar.m_slideNextBtn._onRelease();
    (2) Insert your button's swf in the PPT presentation and
    compile with Presenter. Now, when the user clicks the button, it
    will simulate pressing the "next slide" button in the viewer's
    control bar.
    Here are some of the other button names; to use these
    instead, just replace "m_slideNextBtn" in the above code:
    Play/pause button "m_playBtn"
    Next slide button "m_slideNextBtn"
    Previous slide button "m_slideBackBtn"
    View changer button "m_viewChangeBtn"
    Attachment Button "m_attachmentsBtn"
    Volume Button "m_volumeBtn"
    Hope that helps!

  • Flash button bar integration

    Hi there,
    I'm using flash MX2004 to create a navigation bar for a
    project in Director 8.5. I have used the getURL command in Flash to
    transfer information to Director. The buttons are names button1,
    button2 etc. I have put the flash component in Director and tested
    that it is recieving variable button names successfully.
    I want the button bar to change the director movie depending
    on what button is pressed. I am able to have the buttons jump to
    marker but not change movie.
    I'm also trying to implement a roll-over information feature
    ie. when the user rolls the mouse over a Flash button from
    Director, a text box in Director displays information, eg. When the
    user rolls over the "home" button, the information box reads "This
    button takes you to the first page".
    I'm pretty new to Director and randomly scouring the Lingo
    help doesn't seem to be helping me :)
    If anyone has any tips or solutions for my problems it would
    be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    GL

    It sounds like you want to have a number of different results
    from these
    flash button events. It also sounds like you have a number of
    buttons in
    the flash sprite.
    As duckets said, you can use the getURL() actionscript method
    to send
    information to Director, either to a behavior attached to the
    flash
    sprite or to a movie script.
    Director can interpret a mouse event on the Flash sprite, but
    it can't
    tell which object inside the flash sprite has been effected.
    In other
    words Director knows that the cursor rolled over the sprite,
    just not
    which clip or button was specifically rolled over.
    You will need to set up a strategy for working with these
    flash buttons.
    You will need to decide how much information to send to
    Director and
    when to send that information.
    Actionscript has rollover and rollout events as well as
    mouseDown and
    mouseUp events. So one way to deal with this is to use the
    individual
    rollover and rollout events to send information about the
    text display.
    Then use the mouseup event for navigation control.
    One way to simplify the work on the Flash end is to name each
    button
    instance. Then on the rollover, rollout and mouseup events,
    send the
    name of the button instance to Director. You can then use a
    simple case
    statement to parse out the button's instance name and use
    that name to
    tell Director what to do.
    In flash, name your buttons, it could be as simple as "one",
    "two", etc.
    The write a series of functions for those buttons. Maybe
    something like
    this:
    -- create an array to hold the names of all of the buttons...
    var buttonArray:Array = new Array(one,two,three,four);
    -- create a set of functions for these buttons...
    for (i in buttonArray) {
    buttonArray
    .onRollOver = sendRollOver;
    buttonArray.onRollOut = sendRollOut;
    buttonArray
    .onMouseUp = sendMouseUp;
    -- for the rollover event, send a string that contains a key
    word and
    the button name...
    function sendRollOver() {
    var stringToSend:String = "roll$"+ parseButtonName(this);
    getURL(stringToSend);
    -- do similar for the mouseUp event...
    function sendMouseUp() {
    var stringToSend:String = "up$"+ parseButtonName(this);
    getURL(stringToSend);
    -- for the rollout event just send a simple string...
    function sendRollOut() {
    getURL("rollout");
    -- this function will strip out the simple button instance
    name from its
    full path...
    function parseButtonName(button) {
    var buttonName:String = string(button);
    var nameParts:Array = buttonName.split(".");
    var shortName = nameParts[nameParts.length -1];
    return shortName;
    Now you have a very simple flash movie that doesn't need to
    be edited
    every time something changes in the Director movie.
    in Director make a behavior that will sit on the Flash
    sprite:
    property thisSprite
    on beginSprite me
    thisSprite = me.spriteNum
    end
    on getURL me,data
    if data = "rollout" then
    member("text display member").text = ""
    else
    parseOut(data)
    end if
    end
    on parseOut(thisString)
    oldDelim = the itemDelimiter
    the itemDelimiter = "$"
    if thisString.item[1] = "roll" then
    case (thisString.item[2]) of
    "one": member("text display member").text =
    "first button string"
    "two": member("text display member").text =
    "second button string"
    -- continue as needed
    end case
    if thisString.item[1] = "up" then
    case (thisString.item[2]) of
    -- similar to above
    end case
    end if
    the itemDelimiter = oldDelim
    end

  • Phone keeps ringing on the caller's end - Is This a Call Waiting and Flash Button Problem?

    I had FIos phone service installed 2 weeks ago.  I am having a sporadic but regularly occurring issue with incoming calls that I think might be related to the Call Waiting and flash button so I am looking for some input.  Before describing the issue here are a couple of things to know:
    - I have my Verizon voice mail service turned off on my account.
    - I have the call waiting function set to off.
    - On my phone handset the Talk and Flash operation is the same button.
    Now here is my issue.  Often but not 100% of the time people are telling me that the phone just rings and rings on their end.  After receiving many complaints since my Fios install that the phone rings and my phone answering machine does not pick up the call I have been calling my home phone number with my cell phone and I have determined the following:
    1.  My home answering machine will pick up the call, however on my cell phone which is the calling end the  phone is still just ringing.
    2.  Sometimes I will press the talk button but there will be dead air but on my cell phone which is the calling end it will still be ringing..  But if I press the Talk/Flash button a couple of times the call completes.
    Since my Talk and Flash button are the same I started to wonder if that is a factor so I repeated scenarios above and found that after pressing the Talk button a couple of times then the call is answered and the phone stops ringing on the caller's end.
    I know that with Call Waiting the caller's end will just keep ringing unless the called end switches over with the Flash button.  So my question is even though I have the Call Waiting function turned off could the combination Talk/Flash button be the reason why the call just rings on the caller's end even though I have Call Waiting turned off?  And f this is the cause then why is it happening and does it mean that I have to buy a new phone that has separate Talk and Flash buttons?
    I hope the above description of my problem makes sense and can be answered.  Thank you

    Without buying a new phone you can test this. Unplug the phone that has the combination button. If its a cordless phone base station with multiple handsets, make sure you unplug those as well. Then use a regular phone plugged in to do test calls (if you dont have one you could maybe borrow one for a couple minutes from a friend, family, or neighbor).

  • DW8 flash button target frame not working

    I'm using DW8 v8.0.2 on Windows XP Home Edition SP1. I have
    created a frameset by doing the following:
    - Select File>New from menu bar
    - Select Framesets category
    - Select Fixed Top, Nested Left in Framesets column
    - Select Create
    Then, I add a Flash Button in the leftFrame and target the
    mainFrame by doing the following:
    - Select Insert>Media>Flash Button on menu bar
    - Select Blip Arrow
    - Set text to Information
    - Set Size to 12
    - Select my information.htm file from Browse button of Link
    box
    - Select mainFrame from Target box drop-down list
    - Enter information.swf as filename in Save as box
    - Select OK
    Then, I select File>Save All
    When I preview in a browser, I select the button & the
    content opens in a new browser window instead of the mainFrame
    frame. The same happens if I select leftFrame as target. However,
    _top, _self, _parent, and _blank seem to work well. I renamed
    mainFrame to contentFrame & it made no difference. I tried it
    in IE and Netscape, no difference, except Netscape is a lot faster.
    Tried text links to do the same thing & they work fine.
    Tried other flash buttons and they behave the same as Blip Arrow
    button.
    Saw several discussions on web & in this forum, but no
    solutions. Searched Knowledgebase, no solutions.
    Saw some attempts at solutions dealing with button code, but
    DW8 creates .swf file & button code is not editable.
    Is there a solution to this problem?

    I've encountered the same problem. This can't possibly be a
    bug ... it's too common a function. I've noticed there has been no
    reply to your posting. Have you figured out the solution from
    another source?

  • Dreamweaver Flash Buttons / Frame Navigation in VISTA

    Hey, I use some standard flash buttons from Dreamweaver to
    navigate. I have two frames in this web. The buttons are in frame

    even with IE 7 in Windows XP it still works. But in Windows VISTA

    Adding in frames makes it even worse - you are in the deep
    stuff here. Why
    are you using frames?
