Tascam US-144mkII Causing Problems in Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1

Just got a Tascam US-144mkII, as recommended by the Apple site, to use with Soundtrack Pro 3. So far, though, it's causing a problem - while I can hear audio that I'm playing and I can monitor that sound through the Tascam, the cursor won't move when I record and if I try to play any loops, I get an error - a CNSExceptionWrarpper?. If I unplug the Tascam, everything works fine.
I'm using the latest driver - 2.0.
Any suggestions on how I can get this thing working would be greatly appreciated...

You're right. It wasn't recommended. I should've said it is supported.

Anyone with any suggestions, I'd still love some insight into this.

  • Is my weedy graphics card causing problems in Soundtrack Pro?

Newcomer to Soundtrack Pro here, just getting to grips with what I can tell is a very powerful application, but I have a very basic question.
I am running a relatively old G5, still with its factory standard graphics card -- nVidia GeForce FX 5200 64MB VRAM -- yet somehow I have been able to get by, first in Final Cut Express for a couple of years and more recently for the last year in Final Cut Studio.
My latest project was very ambitious, at least for me: a 13-minute short film shot in DVCPro HD, for which I upgraded to Final Cut Studio. There was a steep learning curve, but I struggled on and got by with my 64MB VRAM. Then I really hit a wall when it came to the sound mix in Soundtrack Pro. I had more than 70 tracks and it was murder, dropping frames and stuttering. I bought a new external 500 GB hard drive to mix to and that improved things a little, but it was agonizingly slow with terrible audio drop frame playback problems and has resulted in a very uneven mix.
If I finally bite the bullet and invest in a better graphics card -- the 256MB GeForce 6800 Ultra was recommended to me, but they are expensive and hard to come by -- will that help the performance in Soundtrack Pro? I am not sure if it's that, or my inexperience in laying out such lot of tracks that is causing me this log jam. It has been frustrating, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, Jim --
Thanks again for the note above. A month later, I have finally found some time to get back to my short film, trying to improve the mix in SoundtrackPro. I've been looking forward to this, because your advice seemed like a great idea. It seems obvious to me now that I should not have tried to mix my sound with my Final Cut Pro media on one drive and my STP file on another. However, I still can't get STP to work for me. Here is what I tried:
I copied all my FCP media (186 GB) from my my (232 GB) internal drive to my 500GB external drive, where I previously mixed the sound into a (62.5 MB) STP file. I then placed all my internal drive media in a new renamed folder, so STP would not get confused and go looking for it there. When I tried to open my STP file, I spent 20 minutes guiding it to find the migrated media in its new home on my 500GB external drive. I did this three times, and each time STP crashed just before it opened.
I don't have room on my internal drive to use STP to mix my FCP media there. I only have 41.GB available, which brings me back to my original problem of severe latency and dropping frames.
My last option, it seems to me, is to forget my old STP mix completely, start over on my external drive by opening my FCP source material there and use that to create a new STP file on the external drive, doing the entire mix all over from scratch. Do you think that could work, or is there some other basic workflow issue I am overlooking?
The good news is my short film has now been accepted into its first film festival -- I sent them a screener DVD made directly from FCP through Compressor. I guess I could lower my sights and use that for festival screening in a less-than-ideal mix. But that would be a shame because I put several hundred hours into Soundtrack Pro, but the levels are all over the place because I could not control the mix.
One thing I have learned: I have newfound respect for mixing and the sound editor's craft!

  • If I install the update to Adobe Reader 10, will that cause problems with Acrobat Pro 9?

Firefox (version 15.0.1) is telling me I need to install an update to Adobe Acrobat 9.4 in order to view pdf files in my browser. I use Acrobat Pro 9. The update is actually Adobe Reader 10, and I am wondering if I install this, will it cause problems with my version of Acrobat Pro?
Because I am not sure if this is so, I have temporarily disabled the plug-in and now pdf files download automatically rather than display in my browser. I would prefer they open in my browser but do not want to upgrade to Acrobat X.
My OS is Windows Vista. I did not include the "troubleshooting information" file because I'm not sure what specific info is being requested.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Audio scrubbing problem in Soundtrack Pro

Hi, new to this forum but not new to pro audio! I've been all round the houses trying to fix this one; hope somebody knows the answer.
The problem is that although FCP's audio works as expected through the AJA, Soundtrack Pro only outputs playback audio through it. Scrubbed audio outputs through the Mac's audio out and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to change it. With the way the edit suite's set up this means switching the monitoring selector just to hear scrubbing - not the best workflow arrangement!
The AJA device only seems to be recognised by Soundtrack Pro for video, not audio.
I'm using a Mac Pro 2 x 3 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with an AJA Io audio/video interface; OS is 10.5.8. I'm also using Final Cut Pro 7.01 and Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1
    Anybody got any ideas?
    Thanks, Doug.

I'm using a Kona 3 in a quad core and it works in all aspects of I/o.
16 tracks in and out and mixing and monitoring in stereo and surround. And yes, I have a proper surround monitoring setup.
I suspect it's the I/o box itself. Maybe, because its outboard it isn't setup to handle that kind of monitoring. Did you ask AJA?

  • Tascam Us-144mkII MIDI problem...

I am trying to use a Tascam US-144mkII with Garageband. I am getting no MIDI in Garageband.
    - The keyboard is sending MIDI to the Tascam, I see lights.
    - The Tascam is powered, I see the USB light
    - I can use a microphone to record in Garageband.
The problem is that the MIDI isn't working and when I look in GarageBand preferences it says "MIDI Status: 0 input(s) detected"
    Any ideas?

  • TS2510 problem with soundtrack pro v2.0.2 under snow leopard

Hi, I've just upgraded my mac book to snow leopard and now when I try to record something with soundtrack pro v2.0.2 through the line input jack, the internal microphone is still switched on and none of the preferences allow me to switch to the input jack,ks
Does anyone know whether STP v2.0.2 will run ok under snow leopard? If I need to upgrade the drivers, does anyone know where I can find these and how to instal them.
    Many thanks.

    There are no "drivers".
Use Audio MIDI Setup to set your audio input.
    Good luck.

  • Soundtrack Pro / Flash problems

Since installing Soundtrack Pro, I have had problems with Macromedia Flash.
I installed Soundtrack Pro yesterday and imported MP3 voice-over files for correction & improvement and saved them as .aiff files for import into a Flash .FLA file on my MacBook Pro.
On importing the files, Flash began to behave strangely - notably, impossible to play the .FLA file to check it (file works OK when published to an .SWF file). Also, Flash refuses to import .WAV files created in Soundtrack Pro.
However, Flash works OK on a G4, where I have not installed Sountrack.
I have tried repairing permissions / deleting the Flash preferences file / reinstalling Flash... but these have no effect.
I would be grateful for any help/suggestions.
    Best regards,
    Garry

Thanks for the reply. I discovered what the stuttering problem in Soundterack was myself, by running around the Internet doing searches. It turns out that these G5 quad-core Macs have a defect in their optical ports on the back of the case. Light leaks in there and causes problems in Soundtrack. It can be cured by plugging both ends of a toslink cable into the ports, to prevent light from getting in there. One of these little cables only costs a few dollars on Amazon.com. I bought one and plugged it in, and the problem disappeared. Soundtrack now works smoothly.
It's too bad that programs such as Final Cut 7 and Soundtrack were simply abandoned by Apple, and declared obsolete and irrelevant, because they can still do excellent work. I have another, Intel Mac with the latest (as of last summer) Adobe suite on it, including Adobe Premiere, and yet I can do many things better in Final Cut than I can in Premiere (for one thing, Premiere can only open one project at at time. On my current video project in Final Cut 6, I have three projects open at the same time and am moving clips between them easily). However, now that Adobe has moved to rental versions of their software, my copy of Premiere is also obsolete, and gets no updates or improvements, just like Final Cut 7.
So I'm making my videos on my obsolete Mac G5 using obsolete software, Final Cut 6 and Soundtrack. I guess I'll remain a defiant holdout for as long as I can.

  • Soundtrack Pro Problems?

Hello all, I'm having a problem with Soundtrack Pro and would like some help...
When using the PlatinumVerb Effect (Process>Effects>Reverb>PlatinumVerb), everything works fine in that sitting BUT when I export and leave the program only to then come back to that same Project File; I that find all of the PlatinumVerb Effects that are attached to individual tracks change back to their default settings for PlatinumVerb.
You can image the pain it causes to go back into the File and change X amount of tracks to only get it to the point where it should be when you open it. Please help me to understand why Soundtrack does this and how I am to avoid it.
    Thank you.

I've had a very good experience working with Soundtrack. It seems like your system has a problem. If you're interested in solving the problem, why don't you try a few things and post back to the list.. Someone here might have an idea for you!
First, Play the file using Quicktime Player to rule out a bad video file. If the video file does play back smoothly in Quicktime Player, there's likely something with your confiuration. Does audio play back smoothly, or does it skip around too? Do you get any performance warning dialogs while it's attempting to play?
Let us know what hardware you're using including any external audio and video devices. How much RAM do you have? Also, let us know what version of the OS and of Soundtrack Pro you're running.
Are you playing back video in the video window, or are you trying to use the video out on the preferences tab?
I'm confident you can get Soundtrack working smoothly.

  • Soundtrack Pro freezes on save and export after upgrading to 10.6

After an eternity, I knew it was time to upgrade my OS. I did so about a week ago. This week, I went to use Soundtrack Pro. It opens, and seems to function normally, but when I click either save or export, the glorious rainbow deathwheel appears. I don't know that this is directly related to the upgrade, but that's the only thing I've done that I think could have affected it.
I'm thinking of pulling another upgrade, but with it not working at present, I'm doubtful that an upgrade could "fix" anything that a previous upgrade broke.
Any idea what I can do?
    Thanks.

Same problem (with Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1).  Attempting to export to MP3.  Did it successfully as recently as a week ago.  Don't recall any major update in the OS since then.  Followed the guidelines above with no success because (according to my computer) the .pkg file downloaded from Apple seems to be corrupted.  Any guidance?
    Thanks!

  • How to fix camcorder audio in Soundtrack Pro

    Hi all,
I just finished editing my short film in Final Cut Pro. The footage was awesome, however, the audio was horrible. I shot this footage using Panasonic PV-GS320, a pretty descent 3CCD camera. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any external mic output, which makes it flaw.
My question is: is it possible to "fix" this problem using Soundtrack Pro? To fix meaning to change it from a typical, cheap camcorder audio to a professional boom microphone (louder, clearer, and better).
The sound from this camera isn't that bad, actually (because although it doesn't come with any external microphone output, it does have "zoom microphone" -- whatever that means), BUT if you were a sound artist/ filmmaker/ college film instructor, you would know that my project wasn't done using an external microphone -- thus you would think that it's just a typical short movie that will end up on Youtube -- and you wouldn't give me a good grade for it.
SO is it possible to make some changes in Soundtrack Pro? I would really, really appreciate it if you guys could help me with this problem.
    Thanks very much!

    Hi Joe,
It is possible - within reason - to undertake some cleaning up of audio within STP. I am in the middle of doing this myself.
Take a look at this great article that explains the round trip between FCP and STP plus the various tools on offer and what they can do: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/soundtrack_pro_newspencer.html

Hi. I'm having the same problem. I just did a complete wipe and reinstall of my MacBook Pro and installed a fresh copy of Logic Studio. I've been using Logic Pro quite happily for a week or so but tried to open Soundtrack Pro for the first time last night and it barely bounced once in the dock then it said that Soundtrack Pro quit unexpectedly. I tried a couple of times including resetting the application but still no joy. I then reinstalled Soundtrack Pro only from the Logic Studio installer DVD but it still isn't opening. Any ideas would be much appreciated. My whole machine is up to date via software update and I have also run Disk Utility and there are no problems. There is basically nothing on my machine at the moment either having done a complete reinstall. Are there any library files that could be deleted to fool it into opening fresh again? Plists etc perhaps? My error log brings up the same thing at the bottom saying that no image was found.
Will keep digging around the archives and see if I can come up with anything.

  • SoundTrack Pro 2.0.2 Beachballs on File/Open

I've recently upgraded a Mac Pro running Final Cut Studio HD from OS X 10.5 to 10.6.
All the software updates are installed and Final Cut Studio has been reinstalled. The only application still giving problems is SoundTrack Pro. It loads fine, but hit file/open and it just beachballs and stops responding. It's the same for a new user account or the existing users. Prefs file has been trashed, and there's no 3rd party plugins that I can find installed in the Library folders.
    Any suggestions?

I was a bit confused by your opening post. In the title you said it freezes and in the body you said it crashed, which is different. If it was a crash (i.e. the program exits suddenly) then that makes things easier because there will be an error message. Go to /Applications/Utilities/Console to view the message.
I wonder if your issue is the same one I had when I first installed Logic:

  • Uninstall/reinstall Soundtrack Pro

Many apologies if this has been answered elsewhere. I tried searching for the topic to no avail.
I have problems with Soundtrack Pro and I want to uninstall it and reinstall it.
Any recommendations as to the simplest way forward would be welcome!
All other Logic Studio Applications are fine.
    Many thanks

Thanks for your input. Soundtrack is hanging on launch, although strangely all the menus are available and I can quit the application using them. It is simply that the main application window never appears, and the launch graphic remains.
    Trashing preferences has not helped.
Does anyone out there know if I can just drag the Sountrack App to the trash and then re-install it using the Logic discs? Or will this be asking for trouble?
For what it's worth, the "console" utility shows the following regarding the problem

  • Soundtrack Pro losing audio!

Has anyone encountered (and please god, fixed) a problem involving Soundtrack Pro 2 actually truncating audio files (.aiff) so that data after a certain point in the track up and vanishes? For example, say a 10:00 audio file get some edits, is saved, then reopened, and voila—the 10:00 is now 05:00, with everything that existed after that point in the track simply gone. I've experienced this several times over the past few days, twice when saving, then reopening the file, and another time after flattening, which was really weird, because the newly flattened file suddenly consisted of only the first half of the file I had just been working on in the editing window. Great feature: Flatten the file and lose half your track. Anyone have anything on this? Thanks in advance.

You'll probably get a better answer if you post this in the Soundtrack Pro forum instead of the Mail and Address Book one

  • Soundtrack Pro Freeze

    Someone please help me.
    here's my system
    4x2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
    4GB RAM
    Version 10.5.2
    Soundtrack Pro Academic
    Version 1.1
    here's what happens.
i know its mostly coincidence but, every time i open Soundtrack just to "goof around" it starts up and works normally. when i'm working on something with a deadline... it freezes. just a minute ago i got it to open a clip i had sent from FCP to clean up some noise. it started up and loaded in the clip then it started to freeze. what i noticed today was that after i force quit that i no longer have audio in FCP. everything in the timeline will play. the meters show audio, but nothing is coming through the speakers. i searched the forum and say a post from someone with a similar problem. someone else posted a possible solution of installing Pro App Update and they provided a link. I d/l the update but can't install it because the installer says that neither of my volumes are eligible.
i'm at my whits end! i've been compromising my videos by completing them with uncleaned audio and its driving me nuts. i'm having flash backs to my earlier days of working with a beat up POS PC and having to cross my fingers every time i turned the stupid thing on.

I had a similar problem. Soundtrack Pro 1.1 would function just fine, until I tried to play any audio. Then it would freeze. I also noticed that there would be a slight "buzz" in my headphones whenever Soundtrack was open. Nothing I tried worked, until I popped open Soundtrack's preferences, and under the 'General' tab under 'Start Up,' I unchecked "Switch Hardware Sample Rate to Match Document."
This immediately solved the problem! Audio plays just fine, no more buzz and no more freezing! Maybe this will work for you?
